I recently saw an advertisement for spider web decorations for Halloween. Although real spider webs are common and easily observed, we largely ignore them unless one is located in a prominent position in or near our homes, in which case they are often promptly removed.
In this episode, juniors Christina Huang and Nidhi Thomas and sophomore Natalie Marshall get into the Halloween spirit and make chocolate pretzel webs.
This episode wraps up Season Seven of Nine Lives, where we've been exploring the Enneagram through panel work. Our finale focuses on Enneagram Six. Dan Gregg, Christine Flower and Craig Hinca join me in an engaging and insightful examination of the Enneagram Six structure. A key feature of Type 6 is the ongoing thought process Sixes experience. Their thoughts consist of worries, doubts and planning for safety and security. As the panelists describe, one thought leads to another and to another and to another--like tree branches or spider webs; unending and connected. Dan, Christine and Craig detail their processes of overcoming worry and fear, learning to trust their own agency. They provide insights to silencing their inner committees and gaining permission to stop planning and strategizing. Dan is a retired paramedic and firefighter. He is currently studying to be chef and is a transformational speaker. You can follow Dan on Instagram @jdangregg66. Christine is an educator and blogger. In this episode, we dive into our recent experience playing an acoustic set at Hop Fusion, a refreshing change from our usual plugged-in, high-energy shows. We discuss how the stripped-down format allowed us to explore new takes on familiar songs, like "Spiderwebs," which we turned into a rhythmic, bouncy tune with a ska flair. We reflect on the benefits of doing acoustic sets, including the chance for more interaction with the crowd and the intimate, inviting atmosphere that it creates. It's a nice break from the usual, high-decibel performances and something we hope to do more often. We talk about wanting to develop an acoustic circuit with a few shows a year to keep things fresh. The conversation also turns to future plans, both for our acoustic endeavors and for the band's growth overall. We discuss the idea of putting together a mailing list to keep fans in the loop about upcoming shows, but we acknowledge how time-consuming it is to juggle everything between gigs and other commitments.
The sun was barely above the horizon by the time I reached the meadow during my morning walk. The bright, flat light hit the tall grasses and wildflowers from the side, creating a silhouette effect that made them glow. But that wasn't all: the horizontal light also backlit the dozens of orb weaver webs that stretched between the tall plant stems, bejeweled by the droplets of dew that had condensed on them as tiny, transparent, concentric strings of pearls. I was entranced by these gorgeous structures. So—rabbit hole time. How do spiders build those things? How do they know to create THAT shape? Are the webs strictly structural and for capturing prey? In this episode, we walk briefly through their remarkable physiology—and how scientists are looking intensely at spider silk for a range of applications.
Do you have any “webs” hanging in the wrong places?
If you feel like you've been running into a lot of spiders recently, you're not alone. Whether catching a glimpse of them in the corner of your eye or walking straight into a spider web, it's almost like they're everywhere at the moment. So what's going on? After a healthy season of rain the past two years, Los Angeles is welcoming a more robust and flourishing community of our local, arachnid friends. But where are you most likely to run into them? From Jumping Spiders and Orb-Weavers to differentiating between Black and Brown Widows, we're talking all things spiders this morning to help us get a sense of why we're seeing so much spider activity this time of year. Joining us to talk about it is Lisa Gonzalez, program manager of invertebrates for the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. We also want to hear from you! Have you been seeing an uptick in spiders recently? Or have a question about spiders in Los Angeles? Give us a call at 866-893-5722. Or email us at atcomments@laist.com.

The last thing Rob expected to be doing in 2024 was talking about Anaheim, California ska-punk/pop band No Doubt, but when he invited Late Slip's ringleader Chelsea Nenni on the show her record choice was crystal clear. When she first heard their breakout album 'Tragic Kingdom' as a 10 year old girl living in Southern California, the seed of one day forming and fronting a band of her own was firmly planted, and Gwen Stefani's honest takes on navigating life and love as a young girl coming of age at the end of the 20th century had a huge impact, even if she didn't quite realize it yet. Songs discussed in this episode: Just A Girl - Florence + The Machine; I'll Be Okay, I Love You, Love Me True - Late Slip; Total Hate 95, Total Hate (Original Version) - No Doubt; On My Radio - The Selecter; Spiderwebs, Excuse Me Mr., Just A Girl - No Doubt; Just A Girl - Florence + The Machine; Happy Now, Different People - No Doubt; Mind Your Business - Late Slip; Hey You, Sixteen, Sunday Morning - No Doubt; Dream On - Aerosmith; Don't Speak, You Can Do It, End It On This, Tragic Kingdom - No Doubt; I Love You - Late Slip

Mal: Now, think real hard. You've been birddoggin' this township a while now. They wouldn't mind a corpse of you. Now, you can luxuriate in a nice jail cell, but if your hand touches metal, I swear, by my pretty floral bonnet, I will end you. Spiderwebs Lyrics Bad men are bird dogging our town Dogging our town, Bird dogging our town Bad men are bird dogging our town We'll lay a trap for them. We're gonna spin a spiderweb Spiderweb, Spiderweb We're gonna spin a spiderweb That's how we will catch them. I'll wear a soft cotton dress A soft cotton dress, soft cotton dress I'll wear a soft cotton dress With a pretty floral bonnet on top Will shoot them down in the spider web Spiderweb, spiderweb Will shoot them down in the spider web And celebrate our win A pretty little girl has lured me in Lured me in, lured me in A pretty little girl has lured me in Declared her love for me She caught my heart in a spiderweb Spiderweb , Spiderweb She caught my heart in a spiderweb Now how will this all end She's leading me to the end of the line End of the line, end of the line She's leading me to the end of the line We'll put things right again I'll break free from her spiderweb Spiderweb, spiderweb I'll break free from her spiderweb And never kiss a girl again Come here little lady, May I meet you I meet you, I meet you Come here little lady may I meet you Guess it begins again It's all a game of spiderwebs Spiderwebs, spiderwebs It's all a game of spiderwebs And everybody falls in 15:21 - Marc Gunn “Spiderwebs” from Come Adventure With Me 17:27 - CREDITS Thanks for listening to Pub Songs & Stories. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady of Marble City Opera, who will be performing as Olha in The Christmas Spider on January 6, 2024 at St. John's Cathedral. Tickets and information at https://www.marblecityopera.com/ Children's tickets are free with the discount code PENNYARTS. Kathryn stopped by the final Einstein Simplified improv show of the year. At the show, someone in the balcony dropped their vape device on Frank's wife Jere. Frank performed in a game in which the other improviser could only read lines from an audience member's text messages. One time when Frank was reading the texts, the girlfriend of the phone's owner stormed out. Frank felt bad about breaking up the couple but Kathryn's perspective is that Frank saved the girl from a bad relationship. Kathryn performed in The Christmas Spider in Baton Rouge in December. There will be two performances in Knoxville on January 6, 2024. Each performance will feature different children in the lead roles. The first show is at 2:30 p.m. and the other is at 5:00 p.m. Kathryn's aunt gave her a gift that was in an empty box of chocolates. It was a small painting of Kathryn's dog. She once bought an empty gift box that was decorated to look like it contained an earwax candle. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Buy books and other merchandise autographed by Body Farm founder Dr. Bill Bass at https://bonezones.com/ including Body Farm t-shirts. Contact BoneZones to hire Frank to give a presentation about Dr. Bass and the Body Farm. Frank upset his wife when he left his phone upstairs. One time she had a flat tire but didn't leave him a voicemail. She kept calling back until he answered. Another time he yelled at Siri to answer. Kathryn suggests that he wear his AirPods all day. Another time when Jere couldn't reach Frank, she asked their next-door neighbor to check on him. Frank has tried using the Google AI program called Bard to help him write a letter of recommendation. He also tried asking it to write a theme song for the Frank & Friends Show. When Frank turned on his work computer, it was open to a Bing browser showing Christmas gift ideas. It appears to have done that by itself. The new season of Tennessee Scholars' Bowl begins airing on January 8, 2024 at 5:30 p.m. on East Tennessee PBS. The drama! The romance! The No Doubt! Quite the setting for a first date between Joey and Eddie.Season 6, Episode 8 - “Spiderwebs”From Max: Jen's efforts to reunite Pacey and his girlfriend at a No Doubt concert backfire upon learning the truth about C.J. and Audrey.
500 episodes! Can you believe it? What incredibly special way will we choose to commemorate this event??? By, well, just having a regular episode discussing Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse with our good friend Eric Sipple. At one point this past summer, we weren't sure another episode was ever going to happen, so this seems like a fitting celebration. The boys rave about Across the Spider-Verse's layered meanings, innovative animation, strong emotion, and how much more fun and exciting the movie is than the comics are these days. Episode: 1068 On trying to copy nature -- harder than you might think. Today, we try to copy Mother Nature.
Invisible but stronger than steel. Complex architectural marvels. Things that stick to your face. Spiderwebs are much more than just Halloween decor or something to feather dust from your corners. Spider silk expert Dr. Randy Lewis of Utah State University not only coined the word "spidroin" for the proteins comprising the many types of silk, but he is considered one of the foremost experts on the wonders of spiderwebs. Alie visits his lab and chats about how spiders weave them, what the silk is made of, and how realistic your favourite spidey superhero's antics are. You'll never (not) see a spiderweb the same.A donation went to the Women's Empowerment and Entrepreneurship WorkshopFull-length (*not* G-rated) Spidroinology episode + tons of science linksMore kid-friendly Smologies episodes!Become a patron of Ologies for as little as a buck a monthOlogiesMerch.com has hats, shirts, masks, totes!Follow @Ologies on Twitter and InstagramFollow @AlieWard on Twitter and InstagramSound editing by Steven Ray Morris, Jarrett Sleeper of MindJam Media, and Mercedes Maitland of Maitland Audio ProductionsMade possible by work from Noel Dilworth, Susan Hale, Kelly R. Latchi Ratyi Miro Amal, Good Evening Friend! You're listening to the Third Season of O Verda Darano! We go Beyond the Caravan this season, visiting fiends from around the country and globe, Roma and Gadje alike. We'll talk with businesses, wildlife efforts, and true characters that will surely entrance your ears with each passing minute! The Witching Hour has finally fallen upon us. The veil between dimensions is at its thinnest and the air is filled with the frenzy of the unknown. Take it all in with a deep breath amal, it's Halloween! The one night of the year we cherish. Candles flicker in Jack O' Lanterned porches. Ghosts sway with the breeze on trees. Spiderwebs glisten with the dew of the morning after the blackest of nights. A festival of splendor I'd say. Appreciated by young and old. Our next guest is one of the many that take part in the festivities, but draws a line in the sand after a point. That point is the line of demarcation between the fun and fancy free frolics of the orange autumnal jubilee and the cold, endless recesses of blackness, haunted by the spirits and entities our feeble minds cannot comprehend. Don't worry though, I saved you a seat, right next to me, so we can visit her and listen to her tales of terror on this our favorite day of the year. Are you frightened? You should be…Be prepared to travel to places and dimensions not suited for man or beast! Dead Scared Entertainment brings you fear you can hear! In this episode, Jacinta and Lachlan chat with Mel Watson. We chat about a whole whack of topics from how Mel thinks more in spiderwebs rather than lines, how rest is essential and if you don't think so, your body will make you rest. We also chat about Mel's experience with burnout and how she is trying to help other women from experiencing burnout themselves. About our guest Mel Watson has a very clear message: self care matters, and if you don't believe that, eventually your brain and body will prove it to you. Mel knows this first hand, and it led her to establishing two brands, What Mellie Did Next, and then The Zest Collective - a wellbeing membership that combines industry experts, online coaching, a vibrant and supportive community, and everything Australian women need to get their wellbeing sorted. Mel shares tips and strategies from her 15-year senior career in organisational people and culture, and her own experiences juggling work and life, coaching team members, and going through burnout yet coming out the other side. Mel is also a proud woman with disability who is passionate about diversity and inclusion. Kirby, Chris and Bo were prepared for anything during this week's episode! Up first: It was the birthday club induction Kirby had been anticipating for more than half a year. Anne Pearce from Store 2155 in Gardener, Massachusetts, called in on the eve of her birthday, and when Kirby gave her the floor, Anne used it to wish two other associates a happy birthday! Then: With the help of regular caller Jersey Joe from store 3774 in Williamstown, New Jersey, Chris kicked off the show with a trip down memory lane. Later, he joined Walmart pantry merchants Todd and Alex to dish about back-to-school deals making their way online and into stores and clubs. Finally: Bo and Producer Dave brainstormed Halloween costume ideas, and customer Sylvia from New Jersey joined in the fun. What else: Kirby and Dave discussed the breakthrough (and eco-friendly) spider-web tech changing fashion and medicine; Candice from 1233 in Paintsville, Kentucky, cracked a [naturally] sweet case of Detective Product; and more. Tune in – if you dare!
