Invisible but stronger than steel. Complex architectural marvels. Things that stick to your face. Spiderwebs are much more than just Halloween decor or something to feather dust from your corners. Spider silk expert Dr. Randy Lewis of Utah State University not only coined the word "spidroin" for the proteins comprising the many types of silk, but he is considered one of the foremost experts on the wonders of spiderwebs. Alie visits his lab and chats about how spiders weave them, what the silk is made of, and how realistic your favourite spidey superhero's antics are. Few aspects of our world are as compelling as the 'High Seas', but the beauty and adventure often associated with our oceans also comes with its horrors. On the latest episode of 4Thirty in the Morning, Ben and Pat hoist the main sail and embark on a voyage through nautical history as they discuss some of the strangest tales of 'Ghost Ships' haunting the waters, from abandoned vessels drifting across the seas for decades, to 'phantom' mariners forever sailing in search of safe harbors. The guys also break down their usual dose of news stories as speculation this week, all while trying not to scuttle the jib in the process. What exactly makes a ship a 'Ghost Ship'? Is a certain famous ethereal vessel the harbinger of impending doom for any sailor that sets eyes on it? Could some historical 'ghost ship' mysteries really be explained by aliens? Is Czechia a hotbed for illegal dentistry? For answers to these questions and a nautical mile's worth more, be sure to drop anchor and listen to the latest episode of 4Thirty in the Morning!

Welcome back to the Identity Theft Resource Center's (ITRC) Weekly Breach Breakdown, supported by Sentilink. I'm James E. Lee, the ITRC's President, and this is the episode for June 20, 2025. Happy first day of summer! Each week, we take a look at the latest news and trends related to data security and privacy. This week, we're going to talk about a heads-up being issued by cyber threat researchers. However, we're going to swerve into the rapidly changing cybersecurity policy landscape and ransomware group Scattered Spider – just for fun. If you ask an artificial intelligence bot how many people in the U.S. are afraid of spiders, it will tell you that up to 50 million people suffer from arachnophobia. I'm not one of them, but I'm close. With that said, not all scary spiders are of the 8-legged freak. First up on the podcast, bringing Gregor Mendel's peas into the 21st century. Back in the 19th century Mendel, a friar and naturalist, tracked traits in peas such as flower color and shape over many generations. He used these observations to identify basic concepts about inheritance such as recessive and dominant traits. Staff Writer Erik Stokstad talks with host Sarah Crespi about the difficulty of identifying genes for these phenotypes all these years later. We also hear some other stories from the plant world, including evidence that wavy fields are more attractive to insects and a tree benefits from being struck by lightning. Next on the show, a carnivorous caterpillar that haunts spiderwebs, camouflaged in its insect prey's body parts. Producer Kevin McLean talks with Daniel Rubinoff, a professor in the department of plant and environmental protection sciences at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, about how such an adaptation might have evolved and the overlooked importance of insect conservation. Finally, we kick off our 2025 books series on the science of death and dying. Books host Angela Saini and books editor Valerie Thompson talk about the challenges of putting this year's list together and the reads they are looking forward to. This episode wraps up Season Seven of Nine Lives, where we've been exploring the Enneagram through panel work. Our finale focuses on Enneagram Six. Dan Gregg, Christine Flower and Craig Hinca join me in an engaging and insightful examination of the Enneagram Six structure. A key feature of Type 6 is the ongoing thought process Sixes experience. Their thoughts consist of worries, doubts and planning for safety and security. As the panelists describe, one thought leads to another and to another and to another--like tree branches or spider webs; unending and connected. Dan, Christine and Craig detail their processes of overcoming worry and fear, learning to trust their own agency. They provide insights to silencing their inner committees and gaining permission to stop planning and strategizing. Dan is a retired paramedic and firefighter. He is currently studying to be chef and is a transformational speaker. You can follow Dan on Instagram @jdangregg66. Christine is an educator and blogger. In this episode, we dive into our recent experience playing an acoustic set at Hop Fusion, a refreshing change from our usual plugged-in, high-energy shows. We discuss how the stripped-down format allowed us to explore new takes on familiar songs, like "Spiderwebs," which we turned into a rhythmic, bouncy tune with a ska flair. We reflect on the benefits of doing acoustic sets, including the chance for more interaction with the crowd and the intimate, inviting atmosphere that it creates. It's a nice break from the usual, high-decibel performances and something we hope to do more often. We talk about wanting to develop an acoustic circuit with a few shows a year to keep things fresh. The conversation also turns to future plans, both for our acoustic endeavors and for the band's growth overall. We discuss the idea of putting together a mailing list to keep fans in the loop about upcoming shows, but we acknowledge how time-consuming it is to juggle everything between gigs and other commitments.
The sun was barely above the horizon by the time I reached the meadow during my morning walk. The bright, flat light hit the tall grasses and wildflowers from the side, creating a silhouette effect that made them glow. But that wasn't all: the horizontal light also backlit the dozens of orb weaver webs that stretched between the tall plant stems, bejeweled by the droplets of dew that had condensed on them as tiny, transparent, concentric strings of pearls. I was entranced by these gorgeous structures. So—rabbit hole time. How do spiders build those things? How do they know to create THAT shape? Are the webs strictly structural and for capturing prey? In this episode, we walk briefly through their remarkable physiology—and how scientists are looking intensely at spider silk for a range of applications.
Do you have any “webs” hanging in the wrong places?
If you feel like you've been running into a lot of spiders recently, you're not alone. Whether catching a glimpse of them in the corner of your eye or walking straight into a spider web, it's almost like they're everywhere at the moment. So what's going on? After a healthy season of rain the past two years, Los Angeles is welcoming a more robust and flourishing community of our local, arachnid friends. But where are you most likely to run into them? From Jumping Spiders and Orb-Weavers to differentiating between Black and Brown Widows, we're talking all things spiders this morning to help us get a sense of why we're seeing so much spider activity this time of year. Joining us to talk about it is Lisa Gonzalez, program manager of invertebrates for the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. We also want to hear from you! The last thing Rob expected to be doing in 2024 was talking about Anaheim, California ska-punk/pop band No Doubt, but when he invited Late Slip's ringleader Chelsea Nenni on the show her record choice was crystal clear. When she first heard their breakout album 'Tragic Kingdom' as a 10 year old girl living in Southern California, the seed of one day forming and fronting a band of her own was firmly planted, and Gwen Stefani's honest takes on navigating life and love as a young girl coming of age at the end of the 20th century had a huge impact, even if she didn't quite realize it yet. Songs discussed in this episode: Just A Girl - Florence + The Machine; I'll Be Okay, I Love You, Love Me True - Late Slip; Total Hate 95, Total Hate (Original Version) - No Doubt; On My Radio - The Selecter; Spiderwebs, Excuse Me Mr., Just A Girl - No Doubt; Just A Girl - Florence + The Machine; Happy Now, Different People - No Doubt; Mind Your Business - Late Slip; Hey You, Sixteen, Sunday Morning - No Doubt; Dream On - Aerosmith; Don't Speak, You Can Do It, End It On This, Tragic Kingdom - No Doubt; I Love You - Late Slip

Mal: Now, think real hard. You've been birddoggin' this township a while now. They wouldn't mind a corpse of you. Now, you can luxuriate in a nice jail cell, but if your hand touches metal, I swear, by my pretty floral bonnet, I will end you. Spiderwebs Lyrics Bad men are bird dogging our town Dogging our town, Bird dogging our town Bad men are bird dogging our town We'll lay a trap for them. We're gonna spin a spiderweb Spiderweb, Spiderweb We're gonna spin a spiderweb That's how we will catch them. I'll wear a soft cotton dress A soft cotton dress, soft cotton dress I'll wear a soft cotton dress With a pretty floral bonnet on top Will shoot them down in the spider web Spiderweb, spiderweb Will shoot them down in the spider web And celebrate our win A pretty little girl has lured me in Lured me in, lured me in A pretty little girl has lured me in Declared her love for me She caught my heart in a spiderweb Spiderweb , Spiderweb She caught my heart in a spiderweb Now how will this all end She's leading me to the end of the line End of the line, end of the line She's leading me to the end of the line We'll put things right again I'll break free from her spiderweb Spiderweb, spiderweb I'll break free from her spiderweb And never kiss a girl again Come here little lady, May I meet you I meet you, I meet you Come here little lady may I meet you Guess it begins again It's all a game of spiderwebs Spiderwebs, spiderwebs It's all a game of spiderwebs And everybody falls in 15:21 - Marc Gunn “Spiderwebs” from Come Adventure With Me 17:27 - CREDITS Thanks for listening to Pub Songs & Stories. Episode: 1068 On trying to copy nature -- harder than you might think. Today, we try to copy Mother Nature.
You'll never (not) see a spiderweb the same.A donation went to the Women's Empowerment and Entrepreneurship WorkshopFull-length (*not* G-rated) Spidroinology episode + tons of science linksMore kid-friendly Smologies episodes!Become a patron of Ologies for as little as a buck a monthOlogiesMerch.com has hats, shirts, masks, totes!Follow @Ologies on Twitter and InstagramFollow @AlieWard on Twitter and InstagramSound editing by Steven Ray Morris, Jarrett Sleeper of MindJam Media, and Mercedes Maitland of Maitland Audio ProductionsMade possible by work from Noel Dilworth, Susan Hale, Kelly R.
