This episode is, we suppose, like a box of chocolates, because technically you don't know what you're going to get, but we can tell you we're talking about the ubiquitous Forrest Gump soundtrack. Remembering top-loader VCRs, #justiceforJenn, powering through overplay, how long sixties soul acts gave themselves to get drawers on the floor, and songs Muppets sing at you. What does it sound like when the Beach Boys sing a New Yorker article about pirates? Find out with our latest episode! Intro and outro by Andrew Byrne; interstitial music by Classics IV. Episode 148: There Were 37.... June 28, 2024 There were 37 episodes of Tales Vinyl Tells that I recorded and posted only on the StudioMillsWellness.com website from the first in December 2019 til March 2022. That's the month that I started doing a live weekly radio program at RadioFreeNashville. It was and remains today based on the great LPs of the 60s especially, many of which I had in my own library. When I started with RadioFreeNashville, I was confident that all royalty details were legit and I then got on Podbean.com who distributes my program to Apple, iHeart, Player FM, Spotify (they no longer use because of their pay structure to artists), and many other podcast services. This is a lot of what you probably don't really care about but there's a reason I tell you this. (Exhale) This episode and many in the future contain a lot of the music in those 37 episodes that didn't get much more play on TVT after #37 because I try to repeat as little as possible. I have no playlist but, oh yes, I do have favorites. One of them is the Doobie's Another Park Another Sunday. So there are a lot of great tunes I'm bringing into the light these days. Here we've got a Song in the Key of Life, one by a one-man band, two from a couple great musicians from the Atlanta area and played important roles in Atlanta Rhythm Section and Classics IV. Santana does a great Classics redux. And there's one about a little yellow pill that your momma took which kept her cool. Mine did not take those tranks. She should have. Anyway, hope you dig it. Next week is the 4th of July and we'll have our celebration for you then, but for now dig these tunes, man! AND, I almost forgot. The JIMJAM this time is Nights in White Satin. Join in! Listen live to Tales Vinyl Tells Wednesdays at 5 PM Central on RadioFreeNashville.org. Thank you, everybody, who donates monthly to me and Tales Vinyl Tells. It isn't free to make this program happen and your support is a really nice gift to me, I appreciate you! If you think this is a worthwhile venture into the great album cuts of the 60s & 70s, you can donate a little or a lot at Patron.podbean.com/talesvinyltellssupport. My deepest thanks to you!

As broadcast October 13, 2023 with plenty of conflicting vibes in tow. Today is obviously Friday the 13th, a bad luck day in most peoples' minds, but Danno grew up in a household where his mother, born on Friday January 13, 1956, always considered it a lucky day. So, as dedication to Danno's fierce protector and the lover of vintage and scary movies in his life, we had a bit of a bifurcated playlist tonight, with parts 1 & 2 all witches, and stepping on cracks while we finished with a 2nd hour of good luck, positive vibes, and just general sunlight to also help all of you get over it if today freaks you out a bit.#feelthegravityFriday the 13th XLIVOct 13, 2023Tracklist (st:rt)Part 1 (00:00)Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes – Bad LuckKelly Finnigan – TroubleAaron Frazer – Bad NewsThe Supremes – Bad Weather (Reflex Revision)Steely Dan – Deacon Blues Part 2 (32:49)Adekunle Gold – SinnerSerebii ft Skud Gambosi – Don't You Feel LuckyArjuna Oakes & Serebii - SatellitesGenevieve York feat Teo Oliveras – Better at Bad ThingsMargot Guryan – I'd Like To See The Bad Guys WinHana Eid – WeirdDehd – LuckyNilufer Yanya – Same Damn LuckDehd - Desire Part 3 (60:36)Aretha Franklin – Dr. Feelgood (Live in The Netherlands, 1968)Etta James – At LastClassics IV – SpookyOsole – Good DayLEISURE – All The Good Times Never DieThe Mighty Bop – Feelin' Good!Beyond Luck – Nature's Meditation feat Keter Darker Part 4 (91:16)Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings – He Said I Can (Live at The Apollo)Emma Donovan & The Putbacks – My GoodnessRichard Swift – Lady LuckBlondage – Lucky Black SkirtJungle – Can't Stop The StarsUniversal Togetherness Band – Lucky Stars

The Classics IV featuring Dennis Yost a enjoyed two more top-10 hits, "Stormy" (1968, Hot 100 No. 5) and "Traces" (1969, Hot 100 No. 2, Easy Listening No. 2), the latter of which Emory Gordy also co-wrote. Cobb and Buie borrowed heavily from 1936's "Every Day with Jesus" by Robert C. and Wendell P. Loveless to pen the top 20 follow-up "Every Day With You Girl" (1969, Hot 100 No. 19, Easy Listening No. 12). "Spooky," "Stormy," and "Traces" each sold more than one million units, and all were awarded gold discs by the R.I.A.A. Those three hits plus "Every Day With You Girl" also appeared in the 1977 film The Chicken Chronicles. In 1970, Cobb, Buie and Daughtry formed what would become Atlanta Rhythm Section with Candymen drummer Robert Nix. However, the former two remained active as writers and producers for the band.[5] After recovering from a car accident suffered in May 1969, Eaton left the band and later on became an electronics expert, working for Unisys. 1970–1975: Later years With Yost as the remaining original member, the group changed its name again to Dennis Yost and the Classics IV. After Imperial was absorbed into United Artists Records, the group signed with MGM South. In 1971 after working for other Lowery artists Tommy Roe and the Swingin' Medallions, Michael Huey became the drummer. During this period Huey also became the staff drummer for Lowery Studios and later moved to Los Angeles. The band's subsequent releases were less successful, despite the final top 40 hit, "What Am I Crying For?" which peaked at No. 39 in 1972. By this time, the partnership between Cochran and Buie ended. After the release of "My First Day Without Her" in 1975, Yost disbanded the group and returned to Florida. 1975–2001: After Classics IV In 1977, Yost returned to performing on the Holiday Inn circuit, this time simply under his own name or "The Classic One." (He lost the rights to the Classics IV name.) The same year, Eaton got a job on Jacksonville's computer system in 1977 and later on worked for the City Hall. He is currently a professor at Florida Community College. During the mid 70s to early 80s, the Atlanta Rhythm Section scored a number of Top 40 hits, notably "Doraville", "So in to You", "Imaginary Lover", "I'm Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight", "Do It or Die", and their rendition of "Spooky". During the 1990s, Yost used many backup bands including Steve "Stevie G" Guettler (guitar, vocals), Jeff "JT" Strickler (bass guitar, vocals), Steve Farrell (guitar, vocals), Mike Wilson (keyboards, vocals), and Wes Armstrong (drums, vocals) of the Atlanta-based group The Rockerz. He also used Nashville-based Steve Jarrell and The Sons of the Beach Band, as well as the Hitts out of Virginia Beach, Virginia, with Ed Hutchison (guitar, backing vocals), Ramon Gonzalez (keyboards, backing vocals), Andy Crosswell (drums), and David Voss. Other incarnations included Toledo musicians Danny Joe Greenburg on Bass, and Sid Siddall on drums. Nashville bassist Louie Meek also did a stint with the band. In 1993, Classics IV was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. 2001–2006: Reformation In 2001, Yost underwent successful throat surgery for a condition that had severely impaired his singing voice. Later on, he started touring under the Classics IV name, which he gained the rights to. 2006–2008: Death of Yost On July 11, 2006, Yost fell down a flight of stairs and suffered serious brain trauma. To assist Yost and his wife with their medical bills, a benefit concert was held on March 25, 2007, at Rhino's Live in Cincinnati, Ohio. The concert did not significantly benefit Yost or his wife financially as hoped, as expenses far exceeded the money raised, leaving the event in the red. After the accident, Tom Garrett was chosen by Yost to replace him as lead singer. The plan was for Yost to make a few yearly "special appearances", and gradually have Garrett take over as the leader of the band. However, Yost was able to perform with them for only one appearance in 2008. Yost died at age of 65 from respiratory failure on December 7, 2008, the 40th anniversary of the entrance of "Stormy" into the Hot 100's top 10. 2008-present: Post-Yost The current line-up of Classics IV consists of Tom Garrett as lead vocalist, Kevin Lloyd on bass, James Yoder on keyboards, Paul Weddle on saxophone, John Kerner on guitar, and Shawn White on drums. The group regularly tours to this day.
Dean Daughtry, keyboardist, was with the Classics IV during their heyday in the late 1960's when the band had three songs reach the Top 5 on the pop charts. In 1970, Dean was a co-founder of the Atlanta Rhythm Section (ARS) with other members of The Candymen, with whom Dean was also a member of in his early years. For nearly 50 years Dean was a mainstay in ARS, which has had six Top 20 hits. Dean passed away on January 26, 2023. On this episode multi-award winning program director Ray White reaches back in the archives and features his May of 2010 interview with Dean before he took the stage. He shared with us his insights into the Classics IV and the emergence of ARS and their then current album Eufala. We close out this episode with an icon in American music, David Crosby, who left this world on January 18, 2023. We take you back to his days with The Byrds, Crosby Stills & Nash and his solo work. Two artists in bands that played a key role in many lives are featured right here on the CAT!
With hit songs like "Spooky", 'Traces of Love", "Stormy" and "Every Day With You Girl" everyone knows of Dennis Yost and the Classics IV and all about their place in pop history. But this is a visit with Tom Garrett, who the universe was going to assign the huge task of taking on the lead singer position in the Classics IV when Dennis Yost had a terrible fall and couldn't perform anymore. Dennis would eventually pass but before that happened he personally chose Tom Garrett to take responsibility for the catalogue and the singing of these songs and by doing so ensured these great hits will continue to be performed and shared with audiences everywhere. It's a great story. You'll also especially enjoy Paul's technical difficulties as he navigates cyber interference throughout the episode in at times very funny ways.
Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady. He recently recorded some See More Smokies episodes with fashion model Victoria Henley. Frank and Kathryn saw each other at Brandon Gibson's funeral. Kathryn and her husband James spent Thanksgiving with Frank and his wife Jere. Kathryn produced Amahl and the Night Visitors at Opéra Louisiane. They will do a different Christmas opera next year. Frank saw a picture from 2013 of Kathryn in Marble City Opera's production of The Gift of the Magi. Frank will emcee Marble City Opera's fundraiser on Saturday at the Knoxville Botanical Gardens and Arboretum. Kathryn will sing during the event as will ten other opera singers who have performed with Marble City Opera over the last ten years. Tickets are available at https://www.marblecityopera.com/tickets Kathryn will sing in a production of Cabildo in Iowa. The opera was written by Amy Beach in 1932. Kathryn will play a ghost. The Cabildo is an actual building in New Orleans that was once a prison. Frank says he did an opera-based scene in Tuesday's Einstein Simplified improv show. Kathryn gave her niece a backstage tour during Amahl and the Night Visitors at Opéra Louisiane. Frank likes the backstage area at the Knoxville Civic Auditorium. Frank bought a discounted ticket to the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra's Clayton Holiday Concert. During the show, Frank got a text and a call from his home-alarm monitoring company. The motion detector had triggered the alarm. Frank's next door neighbor was also notified because he is listed as Frank's emergency contact. Frank contacted four more of his neighbors to ask them to look around while the police were on the way. Frank thinks the heating system might have caused the curtains to billow under the motion detector. Kathryn wonders if it could have been triggered by a mouse. She is workshopping an opera about grave robbing called Doctor & the Devils. Kathryn gave her husband a massage gun and a karaoke microphone for Christmas. Frank asks if James is a singer in addition to being an actor and director. Kathryn says James does not usually sing but he actually did sing karaoke for two hours, including David Bowie songs. Frank plays a lot of David Bowie songs on LakeFM, which reminds him that the audio podcast feed of the Frank & Friends Show is now available in LakeFM's mobile app. https://www.lakefm.com/how-to-listen/ Jere sings with the Knoxville Choral Society. Frank attended their Fall concert at the Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. Frank sat next to a man in his ‘80s who was visiting Knoxville. The man's sister is also in the Knoxville Choral Society. In a matter of minutes, the older man tells Frank that he works as a jazz pianist at bars and restaurants in the San Fernando Valley. The man says that he composed the song “Spooky” which Frank knew as a song by Classics IV. The man's name is Harry Middlebrooks. He told Frank that he had appeared on The Lawrence Welk Show. Frank relates that he once met a singer named Ava Barber who used to be on the Welk show. Harry says, “I'd love to talk to Ava! Have her call me this weekend.” Sign up for a 30-day trial of Audible Premium Plus and get a free premium selection that's yours to keep. It may not be surprising that the self-titled debut album from Foreigner was a hit, since all the members had previously worked with successful acts, making this collaboration a bit of a supergroup. British guitarist and songwriter Mick Jones came from Spooky Tooth. Multi-instrumentalist and fellow Brit Ian McDonalds had played in King Crimson. They were joined by another Englishman, drummer Dennis Elliott (from Ferris Wheel and The Roy Young Band). Other members were American, including Al Greenwood on keyboards, Ed Gagliardi on bass, and Lou Gramm on vocals. The band had the name Trigger for their demo tapes, but swapped that name out when they found another band had already taken it. The name Foreigner was suggested by Mick Jones, because with three English members and three American members, at least half the band would be foreigners — wherever they played. The debut album Foreigner would create three hit singles and would be certified 5x platinum in the US, the first of four albums (this one, Double Vision, Head Games, and 4) from the group to achieve such a high level of success.Foreigner would prove to be one of the biggest bands of the late 70's through the 80's. Lou Gramm would split from the group in the 1990, return in 1992, and leave again in 2003. Foreigner still tours today, but Mick Jones is the sole original member of the group. Feels Like the First TimeThe leading track and first single released would be the first hit by the group, reaching number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Mick Jones wrote this track prior to the start of Foreigner, when he had met a new love after this previous marriage dissolved. It was a feeling that his life was entering a new phase. I Need YouThis song concludes the album and is a deeper cut with great bass licks and chord progressions. "Many is the time I've cursed the Lord's creations. Ah, but you touched my hand, I loved this new sensation."StarriderAnother deeper cut with more prominent keyboards, this one features Mick Jones on lead vocals. The song reminds us of "Crystal Ball" by Styx. You might agree it has a medieval or fantasy feel. Long, Long Way from HomeThe third single from the album gives the perspective of a person moving from a small town to a large city, and the loneliness that results. Lou Gramm has said this song is autobiographical, reflecting his move from Rochester, New York to New York City. "I was inside looking outside. Oh, the millions of faces, but still I'm alone." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television series “Eight Is Enough”The family drama starring Dick Van Patten would debut in March of 1977. It was about a single father raising eight kids. STAFF PICKS:Year of the Cat by Al StewartBrian opens our staff picks with a haunting tune. The song originated from a riff piano player Tim Renwick would play before concerts. Many of the lyrics were inspired from watching the movie Casablanca. The title comes from a Vietnamese calendar which indicated that 1975 was the Year of the Cat.Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes by Jimmy BuffettWayne brings us one of the standard songs of summer. The song itself barely cracked the top 40, but has taken on a timelessness with more than just the "Parrot Heads" that attend multiple Buffett concerts. "With all of our running and all of our cunning, if we couldn't laugh we would all go insane."Georgia Rhythm by the Atlanta Rhythm SectionBruce features a local Atlanta band who was big in 1977. The Atlanta Rhythm Section was formed from former members of the Candymen and the Classics IV who had come to Atlanta as the session band for Studio One in Doraville in 1970. This song is off their sixth studio album, and the first album to get significant airplay. The big hit was "So Into You," but "Georgia Rhythm" got a lot of airplay in Atlanta for obvious reasons.Maybe I'm Amazed (live) by Paul McCartney & WingsRob wraps up the staff picks with a song originally recorded in 1970 for McCartney's first album, but never released as a single. This live version was released in February 1977. This touching song was inspired by his romance with his wife, Linda. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Fanfare for the Common Man by Emerson, Lake & PalmerThis was originally written by Aaron Copeland in response to America's entry into the Second World War. The ELP version came about when Emerson was playing the piece on keyboards. Greg Lake came in with a shuffle pattern on bass, and Palmer added in the drums. The engineer was rolling tape and the first time the band played the song through is what made the album.
Believe it or not, many considered The Who to be a band in decline just before the release of their iconic rock opera Tommy. Their recent releases hadn't been as popular as expected. They had a popular stage show, but between Pete Townshend destroying his guitars and/or Keith Moon destroying his drums, the shows were expensive! The double album Tommy would change the trajectory of the group and make them superstars of the rock genre.Pete Townshend was looking for something different when he created this rock opera. He was dissatisfied with the style of rock advanced by The Beatles and The Beach Boys, which was highly produced but not well suiting for live tours. He had experimented with smaller suites on earlier albums, but Tommy was on a completely different level - a double album telling a cohesive story. Tommy tells the story of a boy left deaf, dumb, and blind after his father, Captain Walker, kills his mother's lover. After many unsuccessful attempts to cure him, he is left neglected and molested by members of his family. Once he grows older, he finds himself unusually gifted with playing pinball. A new doctor correctly identifies Tommy's issues as psychosomatic, and he is eventually cured. He then briefly becomes a leader of a religious movement, using enforced sensory depravation and pinball machines to enlighten his adherents. His strange practices are soon rejected by his followers. The album would come out in May of 1969, but its first performance was in April, which is why we are featuring it here. Pinball WizardThe first single from the album is one of the ban's most famous songs. It tells of the skills of Tommy Walker from the perspective of a pinball champion "a Bally table king" who declares "that deaf, dumb, and blind kid sure plays a mean pinball!" Elton John would perform this song in the 1975 film adaptation of the rock opera. The Acid QueenPete Townshend is on lead vocals for this song. It chronicles Tommy's experience with a gypsy healer who uses LSD to treat his ailments. On the album the song leads into the instrumental "Underture," which represents Tommy's hallucination. Tina Turner plays the Acid Queen in the 1975 film and sings this song.I'm FreeThis song features Roger Daltry on lead vocals, and tells of Tommy's release from blindness and deafness. It also tells of Tommy's rise to spiritual leader as his popularity skyrockets after his cure. Townshend was partly inspired by the Rolling Stones' "Street Fighting Man" when he wrote this one. We're Not Gonna Take ItThe followers ultimately reject Tommy in this final track of the album. It is actually a suite, with movements including "We're Not Gonna Take It," and reprises of "See Me, Feel Me," and "Listening to You." Townshend had originally intended this song to be a critique of politics before it was incorporated into the rock opera. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:“The Brother's Theme” (from the television series “The Smothers Brothers”)The Smothers Brothers comedy show would go off the air in April 1969 after clashes with the CBS network censors over their portraying of the Vietnam War. STAFF PICKS:The Boxer by Simon & GarfunkelBruce's staff pick is the most highly produced of the Simon and Garfunkel songs, taking over 100 hours to record, and recorded at multiple locations. The lyrics are about a person struggling with life and loneliness in New York City. The "lie-la-lie" in the chorus was intended to be a placeholder, but became part of the song.Gimme Gimme Good Lovin' by Crazy ElephantRob picked this one out mistakenly thinking it was "Gimme Summa Lovin'," but this one-hit wonder has a good groove. It is considered psychedelic rock, or garage rock. Super K Productions put this band together, and several covers were done, including one by Dusty Springfield.Traces by Classics IVBrian's staff pick features a laid back tune as his staff pick. The single came out in January and peaked in April at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. It is about lost love, and dealing with it as the years go on. The Classics IV also performed the songs "Stormy" and "Spooky," the latter of which would be covered by the Atlanta Rhythm Section. Grazing in the Grass by The Friends of DistinctionHarry Elson wrote the lyrics to what had been a #1 instrumental recorded by Hugh Masekela. Wayne's staff pick features The Friends of Distinction, discovered by NFL great Jim Brown. The original members were Floyd Butler, Harry Elston, Jessica Cleaves, and Barbara Jean Love. They had 3 top 40 hits, and this highest charting one was inspired by seeing cattle in pastures from the tour bus.INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Underture by The WhoThis instrumental number from the Tommy double album lets us do a little double dipping on the album feature as we close out the podcast with some observations on Keith Moon.
It was our goal when producing this tribute show to have DENNIS YOST smiling down at us from heaven. We think we've succeeded. Also, we could not have had a more prolific spokesperson to speak on behalf of her husband than LINDA YOST who did a magnificent job. This show will live on in infamy as being one of the finest and most sincere tributes to the iconic DENNIS YOST & THE CLASSICS IV. this week I am introducing a brand new segment of my podcast called Retake Episodes. the reason why these episodes are called "Retake" episodes is because they focus on a group or an artist I did on my podcast already quite some episodes back. but I'm simply doing another song by them that I haven't done on my podcast and I'm reintroducing them to you guys for those of you who are new to my podcast and weren't listening to it that far back into my show. this band was a group that I did way back within the 3rd episode of this podcast and I haven't talked about them since then. so here's me covering another one of their songs that you guys may not have heard before. and as per usual, I talk about what makes this song so great musically and lyrically and I also talk about how much this song pioneered a specific genre of music people would grow to become familiar with in the 80's. so here's the link to this week's song just in case you wanted to listen to it:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwR86dj4xesYou can also follow me on Instagram right here:https://www.instagram.com/iheartoldies/You can also check out more of my original music right here:https://www.samwilliamsmusic.netPlease do also check out my two song single that's out now. Last month marked the tenth anniversary of the death of the great Italian basso Cesare Siepi, one of the most important basses of the twentieth century, after such figures as Nazzareno de Angelis, Tancredi Pasero, and, particularly, Ezio Pinza, the latter, like Siepi, particularly associated with the title role of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. His dashing good looks, solid technique, sonorous voice and appealing artistry, placed him in the forefront of the opera world, particularly in the 1950s through the 1970s. In this episode, rather than his celebrated Mozart and Verdi portrayals, however, we will focus primarily on his 1958 Decca/London album, Easy to Love: The Songs of Cole Porter. Siepi also made two appearances on Broadway, including 1962’s nearly-forgotten Bravo, Giovanni, from which we hear two excerpts. Other musical selections in this episode include two operatic arias, several favorites from the Neapolitan song repertoire, and live and television performances from Brahms to Sigmund Romberg. Revisiting this artist, and particularly his spot-on Cole Porter performances, is a nostalgic journey for me, and I hope to convey to you his enormous appeal.

The Police [34:32] a side: "Spirits in the Material World" b side: "Flexible Strategies" A&M Records 2390-S 1981 If you want a glimpse into the world of conflict that is The Police, Mssr le Sting wrote this song on a Casio and wanted to keep it entirely synth based but eventually let Andy Summers play guitar along with the synth. Compromise! And the b-side is, well, very jamtastic. Classics IV [41:21] a side: "Spooky" b side: "Poor People" Imperial Records 66259 1967 That is one cool spooky groove. Fine cover versions can also be heard by Dusty Springfield (https://youtu.be/Fola80rQop4), Jazz Butcher (https://youtu.be/wFielGAVxUk), and Daniel Ash (https://youtu.be/5NYQ34Zf7Lo). The b-side "Poor People" is a bit more sunshine-y, though in my mind pales in comparison of Alan Price's completely unrelated song "Poor People". And that's... my two-cents. The Seekers were an Australian folk pop quartet, the first Australian group to see significant success in the U.K. and the U.S. The Seekers were voted "Australians of the Year" in 1967. Judith Durham joined what was originally an all-male quartet, and their style was hard to define - too pop to be folk, too folk to be pop. That didn't keep them from achieving success, as they were the first Australian group to reach number 1 in the UK with a debut record - a feat that neither The Beatles nor The Rolling Stones achieved. We hope you enjoy this "proto-rock" hit from the 60's. I'll Never Find Another You "I could search the whole world over until my life is through, but I know I'll never find another you." A World of Our Own Upbeat and uplifting, this track discusses leaving the rest of the world behind. "And I know you will find they'll be peace of mind when we live in a world of our own." The Carnival is Over This is an adaptation of a Russian folk song, and is one of the top 50 best selling singles in the UK. Georgy Girl This well known track is from the movie of the same name, and was named for an academy award. Judith considered this song somewhat autobiographical. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: Theme from "The Odd Couple" This 1965 Broadway play became a film in 1968, on its way to becoming a TV series in 1970. STAFF PICKS: “Good Times” by the Easy Beats Another Australian band is featured as Wayne's staff pick. This party song has been covered by a number of groups. “Stormy” by Classics IV Bruce found a connection here he likes! This band started out in Jacksonville, Florida and moved to Atlanta. Guitarist JR Cobb would join the Atlanta Rhythm Section later on, who would cover another Classics IV tune. “Elenore” by The Turtles Rob shares that the opening sounds like Three Dog Night's "One is the Loneliest Number," which would come out a year later. This was intended to be a parody of their hit "Happy Together," but the song actually worked. "Your my pride an joy, etc." “Gentle on My Mind” by Glen Campbell Brian wraps it up with this multi-song artist. John Hartford wrote this song, which became the flagship song for Glen Campbell. Hartford was inspired by the film "Dr. Zhivago," and wrote the song in about 15 minutes. It won 4 Grammy awards in 1968. INSTRUMENTAL: “Wonderwall To Be Here” by George Harrison This instrumental was on the soundtrack from the film "Wonderwall." It is Harrison's first solo effort, and also the first solo effort from any of The Beatles.

In this episode, the Goods from the Woods Boys are joined by the hilarious comedian and INCREDIBLE musician, Rick Wood. Rick Wood is one of the funniest comedy writers and performers in Hollywood. He's also in the process of making an album of grunge covers of Jim Croce's Greatest Hits record, 'Photographs & Memories'. We talk all about Canadian Tuxedos, the battle of the Iron Clad Ships at Hampton Roads, and about the finer things in life... like cheesecake. This is a hilarious episode and we think you're gonna love it! Follow Rick on Twitter @RickW00d (the "o"'s are zeros) and go see him do stand-up on the road! Song of the week is "Stormy" by Classics IV. It's exactly a year today, we debuted our Take It Personal show and here we are with Episode 17. This is the final installment of our West Coast Classics series. That's 4 shows total clocking in over 17 hours of everything West Coast. NOBODY, let me repeat, NOBODY has ever done this kind of tribute before and I don't see anyone dumb enough to try. On this show we have tributes to the great West Coast indie/underground scene, another Bay Area homage and we couldn't forget about Death Row Records. We also have classics from Blu, Suga Free, Styles of Beyond, Zion I, Spice 1, Invisibl Skratch Piklz, DJ Shadow, Madlib, Mac Dre, Tha Dogg Pound, Eazy-E, Dru Down, Odd Future, 2Pac, The Jacka, Kendrick Lamar, The Coup, Souls of Mischief, Paris, C-Bo, Living Legends, Fashawn and E-40.
It's pretty hard to get past “Spooky”, “Stormy”, and ”Traces”, without knowing that you're listening to the Classics IV. During the ‘60s, when they were touring as Dennis Yost and the Classics IV, each one of those three songs sold over a million records. Dennis died in 1968 at the age of 65 and his long-time friend Tom Garrett found himself center stage taking over the vocals. It's a story that could only grow up in the rock and roll ‘60s, and on today's show, we talk with Tom Garrett and the band that is still touring.
