Phil and Tami are back with a non-monthly episode of the Homicide Canada Podcast. In this episode, we go over the curious case of Elnaz Hajtamiri, an Iranian immigrant to Canada who complained to the police about harassment from her ex-boyfriend. Hajtamiri was subsequently assaulted by a group of people dressed as police officers, then […]
Our story is going to take us back to 2022 and into suburban Ontario for what can only be described as a living nightmare. Something awful had been happening to 37 year old Iranian immigrant Elnaz Hajtamiri. Although she never confided in her loved ones what exactly was going on, it is quite clear she was being hunted. Over the span of several weeks multiple tracking devices were found on her car, she was violently attack with a frying pan by two masked men, and then in her last known moments three men dressed as police officers entered a home she had been staying at claiming to have a warrant for her arrest. Elnaz was last seen being dragged by these men barefoot through the snow and into a white SUV. The questions of where she is, who took her, and why remain unanswered, but it seems those secrets won't be kept for long. In September 2022, a young woman named Mahsa Amini died in the custody of Iran's “morality” police. Her death sparked nationwide protests across Iran, what many have called a revolution — a revolution led by women demanding their basic rights. Today, I'm in conversation with two of those women. Mahsa, also known as @Moonitor, and Elnaz Sarbar Boczek, are two courageous Iranian women who have been using their platforms to speak about women's rights and human rights abuses in their country. On today's episode of The GIST of It, co-hosts Ellen Hyslop and Steph Rotz dive into the story of Iranian climber Elnaz Rekabi, who competed without a hijab last weekend. Her decision was seen as a powerful statement amid the ongoing protests in Iran, but given the country's history of human rights abuses, many are fearing for her safety.
