Episode 11 – Spiritual Fruits of Small Acts – St. Thérèse and Marie: The Story of Two Cousins with Fr. Timothy Gallagher Fr. Timothy Gallagher and Kris McGregor take a look at the spiritual development of Marie, cousin of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, through her letters to Celine, and Thérèse's teachings. After Thérèse's death, Marie grew into a spiritual guide for Celine, who faced challenges in her married life. The letters reveal Marie’s assimilation of Thérèse’s “Little Way,” focusing on love in daily, seemingly small acts. Thérèse's advice, including humility, joy, and charity in daily interactions, reflects her practical approach to holiness. She urged Marie to let go of self-focus, embrace sacrificial love, and make virtuous choices in ordinary settings, even during recreation, fostering relationships through selfless acts of love. They also discuss Thérèse's transformation of spiritual attitudes prevalent in her time, such as the lingering effects of Jansenism. Thérèse believed in God's merciful love over fear and judgment, demonstrating a path to holiness accessible to all, even in mundane tasks. Her counsel to “forget oneself” and focus on love for God and others highlights her conviction that profound spiritual growth lies in simple, consistent acts of love. Discerning Hearts Reflection Questions * Spiritual Growth Through Relationships: How can I guide others spiritually while remaining open to my own growth in faith? * Embracing Humility: In what ways can I practice humility by seeking forgiveness, even when I am not at fault? * Living the “Little Way”: How can I fill the small, everyday moments of my life with love and intentionality? * Overcoming Self-Focus: What steps can I take to forget myself and center my thoughts and actions on loving God and others? * Finding Joy in Sacrifice: How can I offer small sacrifices in my daily interactions as acts of love and charity? * Sanctifying Ordinary Activities: How can I approach routine or recreational moments with the same fidelity and virtue as prayer or work? * Being Cheerful for Others: How can I bring joy and encouragement to others, even when I am facing personal sadness? * Rediscovering God’s Mercy: How do I view God’s love and mercy, and how can I overcome fears rooted in a harsh image of God? * Reflecting on Daily Duty: How does my approach to daily responsibilities reflect my love for God and commitment to holiness? * Building Virtuous Relationships: How can I intentionally foster love, patience, and kindness in my relationships, following the example of Thérèse? About this Series Fr. Timothy Gallagher reflects upon the enduring legacy of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, exploring how her life and spirituality were deeply influenced by her family and how it offers profound insights into everyday holiness. He examines the role of family and spiritual friendships in nurturing faith, the importance of compassionate care for others, and how Thérèse’s example can inspire listeners to seek sanctity in their daily lives. He also brings forth more details of the spiritual bond between the Martin and Guérin families, offering a model for fostering deeper connections within one’s own family and community. Father Timothy M. Gallagher, O.M.V., was ordained in 1979 as a member of the Oblates of the Virgin Mary, a religious community dedicated to retreats and spiritual formation according to the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius.  Fr. Gallagher is featured on the EWTN series “Living the Discerning Life:  The Spiritual Teachings of St. Ignatius of Loyola.” For more information on how to obtain copies of Fr. Introduction – Meditation and Contemplation with Fr. Timothy Gallagher Fr. Timothy Gallagher explains the practice of praying with Scripture through meditation and contemplation in the Ignatian tradition. Rooted in St. Ignatius of Loyola’s teachings, meditation uses reason to reflect on the meaning of Scripture, drawing personal insights and applying them to daily life. Contemplation, on the other hand, engages the imagination to enter a Gospel scene, allowing one to “be present” in the event and encounter Jesus personally. Ignatian contemplation is distinct from the mystical prayer described by St. John of the Cross and is accessible to everyone, regardless of spiritual experience. Prayer, as defined by Vatican II, is the foundation of the spiritual life, and engaging with Scripture provides strength for faith, nourishment for the soul, and a deep well of spiritual growth. It encourages freedom and personalization in choosing meditation, contemplation, or a blend of both to encounter God in a meaningful way. By reflecting on passages like the Beatitudes or imagining Gospel events like the calming of the storm, believers can engage their hearts in a transformative dialogue with God. Discerning Hearts Reflection Questions * The Role of Scripture in Prayer: How can you integrate daily Scripture reading into your prayer life as encouraged by Vatican II? * Understanding Meditation and Contemplation: Which approach—meditation (reason) or contemplation (imagination)—feels most natural for your prayer, and why? * Personal Connection to Scripture: How has reflecting on or imagining a specific Gospel passage deepened your understanding of God's presence in your life? * Engaging the Heart in Prayer: In what ways can you allow your heart to respond more deeply to the insights and feelings stirred during your prayer with Scripture? * Freedom and Personalization in Prayer: How can you adapt Ignatian methods of prayer to suit your current spiritual needs and journey? * Transformative Power of Scripture: Reflect on a time when Scripture provided you with strength, nourishment, or spiritual growth—how did it change you? * Starting from Prayer: How does this episode’s emphasis on “everything starts from prayer” inspire you to prioritize prayer in your daily life? Father Timothy M. Gallagher, O.M.V., was ordained in 1979 as a member of the Oblates of the Virgin Mary, a religious community dedicated to retreats and spiritual formation according to the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius.  Fr. Gallagher is featured on the EWTN series “Living the Discerning Life:  The Spiritual Teachings of St. Ignatius of Loyola.” For more information on how to obtain copies of Fr. Episode 5 – Path of Grace and Weakness – St. Thérèse and Marie: The Story of Two Cousins with Fr. Timothy Gallagher Fr. Timothy Gallagher and Kris McGregor explore the depth of spiritual encouragement on the correspondence between St. Thérèse of Lisieux and her cousin Marie during the summer of 1890; during a period when Marie was grappling with spiritual desolation and doubt. At the heart of the letters is St. Thérèse's response to Marie’s feelings of inadequacy, spiritual dryness, and failure in her attempts to live a fervent religious life. Thérèse reassures Marie, reminding her that human weakness is not a barrier to God’s love. Instead, it is through recognizing our nothingness that we can abandon ourselves to the infinite love and grace of Jesus. Thérèse likens Marie's situation to a poor country girl being courted by a king, where the girl’s weakness is not a deterrent because the king (Christ) already knows and accepts it. While Marie feels she is not seeing any fruit from her spiritual efforts, God still treasures these “little nothings” that console His heart. This also touches on sacrificial love, where Thérèse encourages Marie to give her heart fully to Jesus, reminding her of Christ's own humility in becoming “poor” to love and unite with humanity, particularly in the Eucharist. Discerning Hearts Reflection Questions * Acknowledging God’s Grace in Our Lives How often do I recognize and thank God for the graces He gives me, even amidst my struggles? * Embracing Weakness as a Path to Holiness Am I willing to acknowledge my weakness and entrust it to God, believing that He can work through it for my sanctification? * Surrendering Self-Reliance for Divine Strength Do I, like Thérèse, abandon my self-concerns and surrender fully to Jesus, trusting in His infinite strength to guide me? * Finding Consolation in Small Acts of Love Am I aware that even my smallest efforts to love God and others bring joy to His heart, even when I don’t see immediate fruit? * Uniting in Prayer through the Eucharist How can I deepen my love for Jesus in the Eucharist and let that love strengthen my union with Him and others in my life? * Fostering Joy and Lightheartedness Amidst Trials Do I allow the joy of Christ to shine through me, even when I am burdened by personal struggles, to uplift those around me? * Trusting in God’s Plan Beyond Appearances How can I deepen my trust in God's plan, especially when my outward circumstances or inner struggles make it hard to see His work?   About this Series Fr. Welcome to the Stupid Hearts Club Podcast! A place for everyone who believes in love, openness, creativity and giving life a good bloody go.-------------------This weeks chat is very special and is a Music Dad Podcast episode.Last week I took myself to off to a fancy-pants Rock Star hotel in Kensington, London to chew the fat with Scouse bass legend Russ Pritchard of Noel Gallaghers High Flying Birds. Also formerly of the Zutons, and The Big Kids (who you MUST check out).in this brilliant, insightful and beautifully honest chat we hear what it's like and what it takes, alongside luck, to claw your way up in the music scene. We discuss the dedication and guts it takes to hone your craft so hard that you one day may find yourself casually sparking a co-write of a song that will then become a part of popular culture as ubiquitous as salt in the briny sea (none other than 'Valerie'). I think you will love Russ, he is very much a person who clearly doesn't take a single moment of his job for granted, and he made me a proper Brew with not too much milk in it.This FREE version of the chat is dead ace but FYI, there is a different edit with a longer cut of our chat on my patreon at patreon.com/stupidheartsclub in which Russ tells the very amusing story of how he got the job with Noel Gallagher- There are a good few extras sitting waiting for you in the patreon feed going back months, including episodes of 'Tea and Empathy' where I meet strangers in cafes for a brew and find lots of humanity, and several episodes of The Busking Chronicles, which is what I called my music based eps before I realised I was in fact The Music Dad.Wherever or however you enjoy the joy thank you so much for being hereStupid Hearts Club Forever BabyNicoxx-------------------If you like what I do and you want to contribute to my efforts as well as get access to some really cool extras, please take a look at my Patreon! And if you can't, or indeed just don't want to, then I'm still super happy you're here (but I will now ignore you if I see you in the street)And if you want to see how bad my concentration is, then follow me on hings Instagram, where I regularly post whatever nonsense amuses me, come along and say hello-------------------Editing by Nico TatarowiczProduction support from Drew ToynbeeCopyright 2024 Nico Tatarowicz

Trusting God in Vocation Discernment – “What am I to do?” The Discernment of God's Will in Everyday Decisions with Fr. Timothy Gallagher Fr. Timothy Gallagher and Kris McGregor go into the process of discerning one’s vocation, this time focusing on the call to marriage. They discuss the importance of deepening one’s understanding of marriage as a Christian vocation and the significance of spiritual, human, and Christian formation in this journey. Fr. Gallagher talks about the need for growth in emotional maturity, spiritual life, and prayer, as well as seeking guidance and participating in retreats and community support. They also touch upon the challenges presented by contemporary cultural conditions in dating and social interactions, highlighting the importance of healing and strengthening oneself before entering into the discernment process. Fr. Gallagher shares insights from St. Ignatius of Loyola’s spiritual exercises, outlining three modes of discernment: clarity beyond doubting, attraction of the heart, and a preponderance of reasons. They illustrate these modes with personal stories and scriptural examples; the importance of trust in God’s providence and seeking guidance from spiritual directors or companions. Discerning Hearts Reflection Questions: * Understanding Marriage as a Christian Vocation: How can you deepen your understanding of marriage as a specifically Christian vocation? * Emotional and Spiritual Formation: In what areas of your emotional and spiritual life do you feel you need growth or healing to prepare for discerning your vocation? * Cultural Challenges in Dating: How do you navigate the challenges presented by contemporary cultural conditions in dating and social interactions as a faithful Catholic? * Modes of Discernment: Reflect on times in your life when you have experienced clarity beyond doubting, attraction of the heart, or a preponderance of reasons in discerning God’s will. * Trusting God’s Providence: How can you cultivate trust in God’s providence as you discern your vocation, especially in times of uncertainty or struggle? From The Discernment of God's Will in Everyday Decisions: “Three Times in which a Sound and Good Choice May Be Made The first time is when God Our Lord so moves and attracts the will that, without doubting or being able to doubt, the devout soul follows what is shown to it, as St. Paul and St. Matthew did in following Christ our Lord. The second time is when sufficient clarity and understanding is received through experience of consolations and desolations, and through experience of discernment of different spirits. The third time is one of tranquility, when one considers first for what purpose man is born, that is, to praise God our Lord and save his soul, and, desiring this, chooses as a means to this end some life or state within the bounds of the Church, so that he may be helped in the service of his Lord and the salvation of his soul. I said a tranquil time, that is, when the soul is not agitated by different spirits, and uses its natural powers freely and tranquilly. If the choice is not made in the first or second time, two ways of making it in this third time are given below.” Father Timothy M. Ignatius of Loyola”. For more information on how to obtain copies of Fr. One subject causes more friction in the world of the supernatural more than any other; Possession. Cultures and religions throughout history and all across the world can point to examples in both the written word and their oral traditions yet in the modern era, possession is often dismissed as mass hysteria, religious propaganda or mental illness. Yet, Dt Richard Gallagher, a professor of psychiatry at New York Memorial and pyschoanalyst at Colombia University isn't so sure it should be so easily dismissed. In his book. Demonic Foes, Dr Gallagher lifts the lid on his work in this field over the last 30 years and is now considered the leading scientific expert on possession. We discuss some of the cases he has been involved in over this period along with his medical expertise in verifying just what makes these rare cases genuine. How Manc are the Gallaghers? John Gallagher hears about the results of a project to map accents in the city talking to Prof Rob Drummond. In Northumbria Dr Robert McKenzie has discovered that a Northern accent can cost you marks at school and job opportunities. However you speak, your accent reveals something about you. Dr John Gallagher talks to two researchers whose projects explore the variation in accents across England, and the way those accents shape our place in society. Rob Drummond is Reader in Sociolinguistics at Manchester Metropolitan University. With the help of an Accent Van and archive recordings, his project Manchester Voices maps the accents of Greater Manchester, documenting people's relationships with their own accent and charting how accents have changed over time, from lost rhotic Rs to the made-up Manchester accent of the Gallagher brothers. https://www.manchestervoices.org/ You can find an earlier New Thinking conversation with Rob about setting up the project in an episode called City Talk which is available in the New Research collection on the Free Thinking programme website https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p03zws90 Robert McKenzie is Associate Professor in Sociolinguistics at Northumbria University. His project Speaking of Prejudice analyses both explicit and implicit attitudes towards accents in the South of England compared to the North, revealing that prejudices still exist towards particular accents and the effect on school progress and job opportunities. https://hosting.northumbria.ac.uk/languageattitudesengland/ This podcast was made in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council, part of UKRI. Their unabashed cockiness? Their untamed unibrows? The Wolf has struggled for years to get more of his US friends to understand the greatness of Oasis and their melodies so we explore the UK phenomenon of Oasis with Paul Stephenson from Vintage Rock Pod & This Day Rocks to understand what it was like to grow up in the UK during those heady times. As the Liam and Noel are set to start their own tours of the UK, which of the Gallaghers are you most likely to see live?
