A plant on the brink. Labor unrest, safety issues, shaky quality, and a community that had lost faith. Steve Matteson stepped into that storm with almost no runway and chose an unconventional starting point: listen deeply, walk the floor, and build a system people actually believe in. What followed is a rare, practical blueprint for turning a failing operation into a proud, profitable, and resilient culture. We dive into the first 48 hours—hour-long one-on-ones, a real gemba tour, and the surprising power of choosing leaders for connection rather than technical stardom. Steve Matteson explains how he ended “mandatory meetings,” made safety and quality everyone's job, and installed a weekly cross-functional cadence with clear inputs and outputs. You'll hear how accountability with dignity defused tension, why inviting injured teammates into root-cause problem solving changed behavior, and how a simple, employee-led newsletter amplified trust and momentum across a 1,000-person workforce.• starting a turnaround with gemba and one-on-ones• selecting leaders for connection over individual brilliance• weekly cadence, “no surprises,” and cross-functional glue• accountability with dignity and ending mandatory meetings• teaching safety and quality as everyone's job with PDSA• physical renewal, 5S, TPM, and visible standards• handling naysayers through open forums and union trust• bold process change with single-pass mixing and stabilization• documenting habits so culture endures beyond the leader• faith shaping mindset, humility, and serviceThis is a masterclass in sustainable change. We trace physical renewal and 5S as symbolic turning points, TPM to reduce downtime, and a bold shift to single-pass rubber mixing backed by meticulous stabilization and transparent communication. Steve Matteson shares how he documented a repeatable operating model in 31 concise chapters, built quarterly off-sites for senior leaders, and prepared the culture to thrive long after he moved on. Underneath it all is a candid look at mindset and faith—guarding the mind in crisis, choosing the next right step, and leading with humility and purpose. If you're trying to revive a team, unify a divided workforce, or make improvements stick, this story gives you the practical moves and the human touchpoints to get there. In this episode, Conrad sits down with Marie Matteson, a longtime EMS volunteer turned stress specialist, who has dedicated her work to “helping the helpers.” Marie shares how her experience as an EMT, combined with her background in applied health studies and medical massage, led her to develop the One Minute Stress Release technique—something that has helped medics, officers, dispatchers, and even herself through overwhelming situations. Marie tells powerful stories, including how she supported a police officer who suddenly couldn't qualify with his weapon due to accumulated stress, and how she personally used this technique to survive the devastating back-to-back suicides of both her parents in 2001. She explains how stress layers in the nervous system, why peer supporters are at high risk for overload, and how a simple hand position and eye movement pattern can help separate the emotional charge from the memory. If you're a first responder, a peer supporter, or someone who carries the weight of others' crises, this conversation gives you a tool you can start using immediately. Few artists have woven their creative practice so seamlessly into the fabric of their home place as Shanai Matteson. A visual artist, writer, community-based researcher and environmental-justice organizer, Shanai works in northern Minnesota's rural Aitken County, where she was born and raised. Her projects — whether they take the form of printmaking, collaborative public art, documentary storytelling or social gathering spaces — are grounded in reciprocity, ecological care and the conviction that creativity can help repair the frayed relationships between people, land and water.Over the past two decades, Shanai has co-founded and led some of the region's most inventive and socially engaged cultural initiatives. Her celebrated Water Bar & Public Studio has invited thousands in her community and around the state to “belly up” for a free tasting flight of water while discussing water equity and environmental health with scientists, activists and even policymakers. Her mobile mine-view platform, Overburden/Overlook, offers overlooked histories and community perspectives on the extractive industries that have shaped the Iron Range. And her newest collaboration, Fire in the Village — co-led with Anishinaabe artist Annie Humphrey — bridges Native and non-Native communities through art, music and the radical act of gathering around metaphorical and literal shared fires. In this interview, Shanai reflects on what it means to create art that belongs to a place and its people, how frontline activism reshaped her approach to community organizing and why persistence matters more than perfection. She also shares lessons from years of linking art, science and public policy and explains why, in her corner of rural Minnesota, tending to one another may be our surest path to a more just and sustainable future.https://shanai.work/

First, Johnson is joined by John Murdy, the creative director of Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood. Murdy reflects on how his lifelong fascination with movie monsters and pop culture sparked his journey into the horror industry. “When I was 10, I made a Star Wars–themed haunted house,” says Murdy. “I did it for four years until my dad shut me down because there were hundreds of people lined up in front of our house.” He also shares his creative process for designing the event's immersive haunted houses and teases exciting new features in this year's chilling mazes. Next, Johnson sits down with Dylan Matteson, the director of experiences at The Queen Mary in Long Beach. Matteson explores the ship's recent renovations, its storied past, and why it has earned a reputation as one of the world's most haunted locations. “Whether you come here to have dinner or you go to the observation bar to have a drink, you feel the history really strongly.” He also highlights the unique tours available aboard, including the ship's thrilling Halloween events.  Lastly, Johnson speaks with Dante, a seasoned tour guide at Haunted San Diego Ghost Tours. Dante shares tales from San Diego's wild west past, spotlighting the city's most notorious haunted sites, including the Whaley House and the Davis-Horton House. He then recounts some of his most thrilling ghost encounters. “Three girls were huddled together, and they were pointing at one of the two rocking chairs in the parlor because they saw the chair start to rock,” he shares. He also outlines the variety of offerings, from eerie walking excursions to a tour on a bus resembling a coffin.

She highlighted her experience working for a $2B organization, American Express. She shared what led to her success, which includes annually bringing in $25m in revenue for the client.    One key component is bringing people together, communicating, and bridging the gap between large organizations within the organization. Gina said, “Bringing those groups together and kind of bridging that gap, regular meetings, I would often bring different stakeholders together and actually host a meeting within the organization because one group could be asking for something and then another group, it doesn't work with them.”    You will also hear about the biggest challenges she faced when she had to undergo an audit stating that she owed $10m from her client and how she dealt with a 15% pay cut that also affected her subcontractors. TRAIN DERAILMENT IN ILLINOIS CAUSES EVACUATIONS.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Middle East: Tensions remain high regarding a potentially impending Israeli invasion of Lebanon. Various world powers continue to express growing concerns, to include the United States. AC: Additionally, maritime watchers have noted the maneuver of various US Navy assets to the region. However, it's not clear as to if these specific movements are routine or more of a diplomatic power projection. However, it is overwhelmingly likely that the preliminary staging of forces throughout the region is occurring to some degree, should a rapid evacuation operation be necessary.Red Sea/HOA: Houthi attacks on commercial shipping continue. Over the past few days, several vessels have reported being targeted by missiles, including one vessel reporting 5x missile strike attempts. So far, all of these targeting attempts appear to be unsuccessful or near-misses.-HomeFront-Illinois: A train derailed in Matteson, causing limited local evacuations due to the leak of at least one car containing LPG. The leak has since been contained, and recovery efforts are ongoing. No other HAZMAT concerns have been identified as a result of this derailment.Kentucky: Yesterday, Rep. Thomas Massie's wife passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. No further details have been released at this time.Washington D.C. – The SCOTUS has overruled a controversial 1984 decision that previously allowed federal agencies to interpret ambiguous laws. AC: This case, Chevron vs. Natural Resources Defense Council (colloquially known as the Chevron doctrine) has been cited as the bedrock of federal agencies being able to “interpret” the technical details of laws, and in many cases (in effect) add to or detract from the legal text as passed by an elected body. Overruling this case (in theory) removes a substantial portion of the bureaucratic authorities granted to federal agencies, meaning that a substantial shift in administrative law is likely to occur as a result of this ruling, to include the more than 18,000 laws that cite the precedent of this case.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Last night, Israeli media reported that the White House has lifted the “soft” hold on the export of Mk 82 bombs to Israel. As a reminder, the White House had hesitated to export these unguided munitions for fear of the potential for civilian casualties in Gaza. As such, this shipment (and other shipments of even larger munitions) had been placed under review until the decision was made to complete the arms transfer. Overnight, various Israeli media outlets (citing confidential sources) claimed that the arms transfer had been approved, and the shipment will be completed after the Israeli operation in Rafah has reached a conclusion. Of course, unverifiable information from historically questionable sources must be taken with a grain of salt, however this may signal a few impending milestones: A potential shifting of logistics to support an operation in the North (which would need the larger munitions), a removal of the last American political hesitance to continue arming Israel with larger (and potentially unguided) munitions, and a potential widening of the conflict throughout the Middle East. Analyst: S2A1//END REPORT//
