This episode features an insightful discussion on the current state of the beef industry, highlighting the significant rise in cattle prices driven by low supply and strong consumer demand. Hosts Jay Matteson and Ron Robbins welcome Dr. Travis Maddock, founder of Dakota Global Consulting, LLC., who shares his expertise on livestock production and market trends. The conversation delves into the challenges faced by beef and dairy farmers, including an aging producer population and the impact of agricultural policies. Listeners gain valuable perspectives on the interplay between beef on dairy practices and the evolving market dynamics. The episode culminates in a look at how tariffs and trade negotiations could affect the industry moving forward, emphasizing the resilience and adaptability of the beef sector amid economic fluctuations.Jay Matteson hosts an engaging conversation about the current state of rural America, particularly focusing on agriculture and the beef industry. The episode opens with Matteson introducing his co-host, Ron Robbins, and their special guest, Dr. Travis Maddock, a seasoned consultant in livestock production. The trio discusses the significant fluctuations in weather patterns affecting farming practices, particularly in northern regions, where extreme temperatures and snow conditions are prevalent. They also touch on the societal shifts influencing young people's decisions to enter the agricultural sector, noting a trend of older generations retiring without successors ready to take over their farms. This discussion leads to an exploration of the challenges facing the beef industry, including supply chain issues stemming from historic droughts and low breeding cattle numbers. Maddock emphasizes the need for younger farmers to adapt and innovate rather than just replicate traditional practices, suggesting that integrating additional revenue streams, such as agritourism or direct-to-consumer sales, can create a more sustainable business model. As the conversation progresses, the podcast delves into consumer behavior regarding beef prices, highlighting the surprising resilience of demand despite rising costs in supermarkets. Matteson shares personal anecdotes about the steep prices of steak, prompting Maddock to analyze the factors behind these increases, including reduced cattle supply and strong consumer demand. The trio discusses the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cattle farming, mentioning how it has shifted the dynamics of the market. Maddock notes that while current prices are high, the stability of the beef market relies heavily on maintaining a balance between supply and demand. They also examine the implications of tariffs and trade policies under the current political climate, expressing cautious optimism about how these factors will shape the future of farming and beef production. The podcast concludes with a reflective dialogue on the evolving agricultural landscape and the importance of adapting to new market realities. Maddock reassures listeners that despite challenges, there are still opportunities in the beef industry for those willing to innovate and work hard. He encourages young farmers to consider diverse strategies for profitability and emphasizes the value of beef as a nutritious and desirable food product. This episode is a rich tapestry of insights, practical advice, and an exploration of the complexities of rural life, leaving listeners with a deeper understanding of the issues and opportunities in agriculture today.Takeaways: The beef industry is currently seeing record high prices due to low supply and strong demand. Young farmers may face challenges in entering beef production due to high initial costs and long ROI periods. Dairy farmers are increasingly breeding Holsteins with Angus to improve calf quality and meet beef demand. Consumer demand for beef remains strong despite rising prices,...

Bringing Farm Workers Out of the Shadows: A Call to Action

Jay Matteson's Rural America

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 19, 2024 30:18 Transcription Available

Jay Matteson and Ron Robbins tackle a critical conversation about the future of agricultural labor in the U.S., focusing specifically on the importance of foreign workers in the farming sector. They detail how these workers are essential to maintaining productivity in dairy farming and other agricultural practices. The hosts discuss the current state of immigration policy, particularly the limitations of the H2A visa program, which is designed for temporary seasonal workers but does not provide the stability that dairy farms require. They emphasize the need for a more adaptable labor solution that can accommodate the long-term staffing needs of farms, which are often overlooked in policy discussions.Throughout the episode, the hosts challenge prevalent misconceptions surrounding the employment of undocumented workers in agriculture. They provide insights into the legal obligations that farmers must adhere to, such as paying fair wages and meeting strict regulatory standards. By sharing their personal experiences and expertise, they aim to dispel myths about exploitation in the agricultural labor market, demonstrating that most farmers are committed to complying with labor laws while facing significant challenges in securing a reliable workforce. The discussion leads to a broader consideration of how the U.S. must navigate its agricultural workforce needs in the face of changing demographics and a declining domestic labor pool. Matteson and Robbins argue that without reforming labor policies to create a viable path for foreign workers to fill critical roles on farms, the nation risks jeopardizing its food production capabilities. The episode serves as a vital reminder of the interconnectedness of immigration, labor, and agriculture, urging listeners to advocate for sensible policies that support both farmers and workers.Takeaways: The importance of a stable and reliable workforce in agriculture cannot be overstated, especially for dairy farms. Farm owners face significant challenges in hiring local workers for labor-intensive agricultural roles. There's a pressing need for a guest worker program that allows for longer-term employment in agriculture. Misinformation about agricultural labor practices can lead to misunderstandings regarding wages and working conditions. Without foreign labor, the U.S. faces a critical decision between importing food or workers. A simplified guest worker program could help address the labor shortages faced by farmers.

TRAIN DERAILMENT IN ILLINOIS CAUSES EVACUATIONS.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Middle East: Tensions remain high regarding a potentially impending Israeli invasion of Lebanon. Various world powers continue to express growing concerns, to include the United States. AC: Additionally, maritime watchers have noted the maneuver of various US Navy assets to the region. However, it's not clear as to if these specific movements are routine or more of a diplomatic power projection. However, it is overwhelmingly likely that the preliminary staging of forces throughout the region is occurring to some degree, should a rapid evacuation operation be necessary.Red Sea/HOA: Houthi attacks on commercial shipping continue. Over the past few days, several vessels have reported being targeted by missiles, including one vessel reporting 5x missile strike attempts. So far, all of these targeting attempts appear to be unsuccessful or near-misses.-HomeFront-Illinois: A train derailed in Matteson, causing limited local evacuations due to the leak of at least one car containing LPG. The leak has since been contained, and recovery efforts are ongoing. No other HAZMAT concerns have been identified as a result of this derailment.Kentucky: Yesterday, Rep. Thomas Massie's wife passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. No further details have been released at this time.Washington D.C. – The SCOTUS has overruled a controversial 1984 decision that previously allowed federal agencies to interpret ambiguous laws. AC: This case, Chevron vs. Natural Resources Defense Council (colloquially known as the Chevron doctrine) has been cited as the bedrock of federal agencies being able to “interpret” the technical details of laws, and in many cases (in effect) add to or detract from the legal text as passed by an elected body. Overruling this case (in theory) removes a substantial portion of the bureaucratic authorities granted to federal agencies, meaning that a substantial shift in administrative law is likely to occur as a result of this ruling, to include the more than 18,000 laws that cite the precedent of this case.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Last night, Israeli media reported that the White House has lifted the “soft” hold on the export of Mk 82 bombs to Israel. As a reminder, the White House had hesitated to export these unguided munitions for fear of the potential for civilian casualties in Gaza. As such, this shipment (and other shipments of even larger munitions) had been placed under review until the decision was made to complete the arms transfer. Overnight, various Israeli media outlets (citing confidential sources) claimed that the arms transfer had been approved, and the shipment will be completed after the Israeli operation in Rafah has reached a conclusion. Of course, unverifiable information from historically questionable sources must be taken with a grain of salt, however this may signal a few impending milestones: A potential shifting of logistics to support an operation in the North (which would need the larger munitions), a removal of the last American political hesitance to continue arming Israel with larger (and potentially unguided) munitions, and a potential widening of the conflict throughout the Middle East. Analyst: S2A1//END REPORT//

Everyone is different. Someone may work differently than you, and that's okay! Being a great leader isn't just about leading in the workplace, it's also about making a safe environment for everyone, even those who are neurodivergent and work differently than the rest. Laura Matteson is a visual translator who helps intuitive leaders take complex or mysterious ideas and organize them into understandable visuals to help them boldly take their next steps forward. She loves helping other neurodivergent humans think and communicate in their own way so they can make an impact in their world. In this episode, Laura talks about neurodivergence and how you can spot it in your workplace. She also shares some tips on what you can do to make your workplace a safe place for everyone, even those with neurodivergence so that you can maximize everyone's potential.   What you will learn from this episode:  Find out what is neurodivergence and how does it look like in the workplace Learn more about the power of communicating and speaking out in the workplace Understand what are the different changes you can adapt in your workplace that can help neurodivergent people   “Instead of saying that your neurotype is damaged and disordered, it [neuro-divergence] is saying that your neurotype is divergent from the norm, or what's expected.” - Laura Matteson   Topics Covered: 01:21 - Laura shares about her business and who she helps 02:55 - What does neurodivergence mean? 04:29 - How can a neurodivergent do time management differently? 07:24 - Laura talks about her neurodivergent clients when it comes to handling neurodivergence 09:14 - How can you recognize neurodivergence in people? 12:47 - Can observing help you see if someone is neurodivergent? 13:47 - Laura shares how can you approach and communicate with a neurodivergent as a business leader 18:33 - What are the mistakes people typically make when working with neurodivergent people? 22:37 - Laura's parting powerful tip: I use the analogy of labels on clothing. So we don't use labels to determine if clothing is worthy or good or going to be useful for the task. We use the labels to tell us how to care for that garment and how it needs to be taken care of.    Key Takeaways:  “Knowing all the different ways that you're different is the first step.” - Laura Matteson “We're just trying to do fun things all the time and take risks to get dopamine.” - Laura Matteson “Other people might judge you, but it's not their problem, because you have this different way of doing things. And so do these other people. And so you're not alone.” - Laura Matteson “Assume that they don't know how to do it if they're not doing it.” - Laura Matteson “You can be professional and start work later and still do a wonderful job. And everything just needs to be transparent with the other person.” - Laura Matteson   Ways to Connect with Laura Matteson: Website: https://www.illustrative.us/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/illustrative/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/illustrative.us/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/illustrative.us/   Ways to Connect with Sarah E. I'm delighted to welcome Matteson Gregory back to the show for an outstanding conversation about this complex topic. The quote for this episode is by Jana Kingsford: “Balance is not something you find; it's something you create.” During our conversation, Matteson and I talk about creating a healthy balance and how this is different for everyone, making changes when things are out of balance, taking breaks for self care and mental health, setting ourselves up for maximum creativity and productivity, the unique reality artists have when it comes to separating our personal and professional lives, having a balanced schedule, setting boundaries, not crossing personal lives in professional situations, building a social media presence based on a comfort level with what to share, being mindful with business relationships and industry friends, and much more. We also chat about Matteson's single, “Have You Seen My Friends?” I loved having Matteson back on the show, so I hope it inspires you to create a stronger balance in your life.
