This year has been an eventful year for the environment. The effects of the pandemic are still being felt worldwide and we have witnessed unprecedented weather events. The latest IPCC report warned of a “code red” for humanity, stating that global warming was affecting all regions across the globe.  In November, world leaders attended the environmental summit COP26 in Glasgow, to discuss ways they could reduce their emissions.   At the same time, in the UK, the Environment Bill was given Royal Assent and it has been hailed as a major environmental milestone.   In this last episode of 2021, we discuss with our guest, Dame Glenys Stacy, the positive strides made at COP26, the need for greater ambitions and the importance of following through those agreements.   We also discuss what the new Environment Act will mean for businesses with the implementation of regulations for certain industries. We talk about the future role of the Office of Environmental Protection (OEP) and how it will interact with other agencies.  To know more about the work IEMA does to transform the world to sustainability please visit our website: https://www.iema.net/

Over the summer it's been tempting to think that the pandemic is almost over. But last night, Health Secretary Savid Javid insisted that "life is not back to normal". 49,000 people tested positive for Covid-19 yesterday - levels we haven't seen since the end of last year - and he warned that they could hit 100,000 a day over winter. But despite all this, the government has decided not to implement its so-called Plan B - which would include mandatory mask wearing, working from home and vaccine passports. Instead its encouraging people to get their booster jabs, and advising people to make their own decisions on mask wearing and socialising more outside. But will the public, who've already seen one Christmas fall into oblivion, be willing to change their behaviour for a second winter? Campaigner Rosamund Adoo-Kissi-Debrah is raising awareness of asthma and the health problems that can be caused by air pollution. Last year her daughter, Ella, became the first person in Britain to have air pollution listed as the cause of death after an inquest. She died in 2013 aged nine. Now Rosamund is calling on Boris Johnson to “set an example for the whole world” with ambitious clear air goals. The Environment Bill was debated in the House of Commons yesterday (Wednesday). Rosamund discusses her work and the changes she wants to see. Lockdowns and working from home have changed how we dress but 'fat people don't have the luxury of wearing the dressed down look'. That's according to the activist and stand-up comedian Sofie Hagen who says that society dictates that people who are over-weight have to look like they are trying. She and Emma discuss the pressures she believes exist. Mortality rates remain exceptionally high for babies from ethnically diverse backgrounds despite overall rates of stillbirth and neonatal death rates having fallen. Neonatal death rates are 73% higher than those living in the least deprived areas. With Asian babies 60% higher than white babies, and 43% greater for babies of Black ethnicity. Emma is joined by Clea Harmer, Chief Executive of SANDS, and Professor of Perinatal & Paediatric Epidemiology, Elizabeth Draper part of the MBRRACE team who collect and analyse the numbers and rates of baby deaths in the UK. After undergoing vocal chord surgery, MOBO and Brit award-winning singer songwriter Ella Eyre is back on her first headline tour in six years. She reveals how she's had to learn how to sing again - and how the experience has inspired a new musical direction. The UK Environment Bill aims to ensure that UK-based companies are transparent about their supply chains and their impact on deforestation and proposes fines for those who don't adhere.  What will this new legislation mean for food and drink brands, why is it important, and does it go far enough? Joining Table Talk this week to share their views are Sam Lawson, Founding Director, Earthsight, Alice Lucas, Advocacy and Policy Manager, Fairtrade Foundation and Robert Sheasby, Chief Executive, The Agricultural Industries Confederation. About our panel Sam Lawson, Founding Director, Earthsight Earthsight is a non-profit organisation committed to harnessing the power of primary investigative research and reporting to bring attention to pressing issues of human rights and environmental justice. We aim to get to the core of an issue, using a range of investigative research methods to obtain first-hand, documented evidence of crimes against both people and the planet which is irrefutable and impossible to ignore. By following the money and tracing supply chains, our research also aims to expose the complicity of consumers and financiers in abetting these abuses. Alice Lucas, Advocacy and Policy Manager, Fairtrade Foundation Alice Lucas is Advocacy and Policy Manager at the Fairtrade Foundation, leading on the organisation's policy response to Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence Legislation, and it's work on trade policy. Alice has been following the progress of the Environment Bill through Parliament and continues to engage with Members of Parliament and Government departments on the deforestation proposals. Alice holds an MSc in International Public Policy. Prior to joining Fairtrade, Alice worked on European Immigration and Asylum policy and advocacy. She has previously worked in the Communications and Education sector, and is currently acting as an advocacy strategy consultant to smaller NGO's. Alice is Board member for the Trade Justice Movement. Robert Sheasby, Chief Executive, The Agricultural Industries Confederation Robert Sheasby was appointed the Agricultural Industries Confederation (AIC) Chief Executive in May 2018. In this role Robert has overall responsibility for all aspects of the AIC, across its political lobbying, member representation and the six trade assurance schemes it runs on behalf of the agricultural supply sector. Robert joined the AIC after 17 years at the National Farmers' Union (NFU) where he had held various roles, most recently as NFU Regional Director for East Anglia. Prior to this Robert had been Regional Director in the North West and NFU Surveyor for England & Wales.  Robert studied at Seale Hayne Agricultural College and holds a degree in Rural Estate Management as well as being a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Prior to joining the NFU in 2001 Robert worked in the South West and the Thames Valley for firms of chartered surveyors as land agent and auctioneer. Robert is also a member of the Agricultural Law Association (ALA). Robert is experienced in agricultural political lobbying both at a national and European level. A new report from the French think-tank the IDDRI - which specialising in sustainability - finds transitioning to agroecological farming systems and local food supply chains would increase rural jobs, provide sustainable diets, and combat climate change. But how would that work in practise and would it mean increased food prices? The long-awaited Environment Bill is returning to the House of Commons after being delayed several times. The Bill includes new amendments to set and meet legally binding targets on species abundance by 2030. There will also be amendments to reduce the harm from storm overflows to rivers, waterways and coastlines and a plan will be published to reduce sewage discharges into rivers by September 2022, with progress having to be reported to Parliament. Pollinator strips on farmland could be helping bumblebees more than we thought. New research shows the nectar from some wildflowers contains caffeine, which helps protect bumblebees against disease. Anna Hill hears from a scientist who says wildflower mixes could be tailored to act as a natural pharmacy for the bumblebees in that area. And with many family days-out closed over lockdown last summer, farms offering Pick Your Own saw a big increase in footfall. But that can present new challenges! We visit a farm offering PYO asparagus and soft fruit in Surrey, which is now issuing guidelines to visitors on how to behave and has even been employing martials, to keep the crowds in check. The world is facing a biodiversity crisis, but farmers can - and many want to - help. New UK legislation is set to open a new market and income opportunity for farmers and landowners through the delivery of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG). When the Environment Bill passes through parliament later this year, it will require all developments to demonstrate a BNG of 10%. Thousands of hectares of land dedicated to biodiversity will be needed, which could mean a new income stream for farmers. Already, developers, land agents, charities, brokers and local authorities are preparing themselves and even entering agreements. So, how can farmers prepare for this new market opportunity? To find out more, Jez Fredenburgh is joined by Teresa Dent, chief exec of the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust, which has been working on biodiversity agreements with farmer clusters, and David Hill, founder of Environment Bank, a UK company which is at the forefront of biodiversity accounting and offsetting agreements.
