How to make pick-your-own more profitable than other markets with Megan Neubauer of Pure Land Farm in McKinney, Texas

Growing For Market Podcast

Pick-your-own is an underused marketing channel for local vegetable and flower farms, one that could be transformative if PYO were implemented on anywhere near the scale of farmers markets or CSAs. Megan Neubauer of Pure Land Farm in McKinney, Texas is here to tell us how, after struggling with farmers markets, she made PYO more profitable and efficient for her farm. She used these experiences to write the book, Pick-Your-Own Farming: Free Yourself from Farmers Markets and Join the Agritourism Revolution. Learn how to deal with “customer blight,” why she charges admission, how they choose good PYO crops, and what veg and flower crops those are. It all adds up to making double or triple what they made at farmers markets in just eight weeks of PYO (though of course it takes more than eight weeks of farm work to make that happen).Megan didn't start her career in farming — she has a BS in Biology from Boston University and worked for several years in biotech and scientific research. But in 2012, Megan and her father started their farm together using regenerative growing methods on three acres of thornless blackberries and two acres of diversified fruits and vegetables, exclusively marketing their products using agritourism. They offer their local customers a uniquely diverse pick-your-own or u-pick experience, which you can hear about on this week's Growing for Market Podcast. Connect With Guest:Read her book: Pick-Your-Own Farming: Free Yourself from Farmers Markets and Join the Agritourism RevolutionEmail: megan@purelandorganic.comWebsite: www.purelandorganic.comFacebook: @purelandfarmInstagram: @purelandfarmTikTok: @purelandfarm Podcast Sponsors:Huge thanks to our podcast sponsors as they make this podcast FREE to everyone with their generous support: Tired of admin work and technology trouble? HEADLINE: Cambridge Dictionary's definition of woman acknowledges they may have been said to have a different sex at birth  So what is the purpose of definition now?  If you can change the definition to suit the times...is it really a definition? They have to use nominalism, the corruption of words. So basically the Cambridge dictionary decided it's no longer aligned w/ reality HEADLINE: Marriage Is The Form of Christian Politics by Marc Barnes  Would you like to make an institution Christian? Then make it a marriage.  Marriage makes virtue possible by making it necessary. One can indulge the illusion that virtue is “good behavior” when one is a child; make a kind merit-badge of it when one is a young man; fantasize about virtue as “growth in self-mastery” deep into one's twenties; but the married man is not virtuous because he would like to be but because he has freely chosen a situation in which the lack of virtue means—hell! Instant hell.  Be a selfish jerk at a Waffle House—no demon will rise from the ground to remind you of the ultimate end of your actions. Pejure yourself in a court of law—you'll get away with it. But be a selfish jerk around the family table, and you'll already feel the infernal heat; the shift of temperature; the sudden isolation of your being from itself, as your wife and children look on you with horror.

Who is Westwind Orchard and their cider Fabio Chizzola & Laura Ferrara are the owners/farmers of Westwind Orchard located in Accord, New York on the west dies of the Hudson River. The orchard was bought in 2002 and was as Fabio described it "abandoned". Over time her pruned and replanted and open the area for Pick Your Own in 2008.  In addition to offering the apples, pizza was being made and sold. In time Fabio noticed that many of teh patrons were bringing their own wine, beer and perhaps cider to drink with the food. That was an a-ha moment, when he realized that they could do more than just offer apples to take home but instead ferment the select crop into cider! Both Laura and Fabio are of Italian descendent with Fabio growing up in Rome, which leads to an obvious statement that rings true. "I'm Italian I know food.…I know how food should taste.” Today the orchard has 70-80 varieties of apples and  the Pick Your Own option is no longer available with all the apples going into the production of Westwind Orchard's Cider. Say Fabio, "We are using every single spot in the orchard for apples trees." Fabio Chizzola What to expect at Westwind Orchard Cider is poured by the glass and bottles are available for purchase. There is a restaurant with pasta offerings and wood fired pizza The main seating is all outdoors on picnic benches and even open in the winter (there is some heating but dress warmly). The Ciders of Westwind All ciders are fermented to a dry profile There are single varietal ciders available and also blends Barrel aged ciders Occasional ciders made with unsprayed apples and wild yeast Cultured yeast are used because Fabio doesn't use sulfites Contact for Westwind Orchard Website: https://www.westwindorchard.com/ Address: 215 LOWER WHITFIELD ROAD ACCORD, NY 12404 Mentions in this Chat Mentions in this Chat Northwest Cider Club - The final special cider box for the end of the year features Montana, Idaho ciders in the Discover Box and Elevated Box 281: Cider Fueled Road Trip to NY and PA Help Support Cider Chat Please donate today.  Pick Your Own www.pickyourown.org How to find a Pick-Your-Own farm"Whether you call it pick-your-own, PYO or U-pick, it's easy to find one near you!  There is a "Start here" button (at the top of the  left of every page). You then select your local area (country, state/province) and then region/county or local metropolitan area.  Just scroll down the page that appears, to see tree farms, lots or events listed by county.  This website provides local listings of pick your own (also called U-pick or PYO) farms in the United States, Canada, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and other countries. There are crop calendars for each local area to tell you what is available to pick throughout the year, local weather forecasts and really easy illustrated directions to show you how to make jam, jelly, salsa, pickles, spaghetti sauce, applesauce,  apple butter and 150 other recipes with step-by-step directions to can, freeze, dry or preserve the harvest. The search engine can be helpful, too.    You can also find a related fruit or vegetable festival (like a tomato festival, corn fest, blueberry festival, strawberry festival, an applefest or more) or even an Easter Egg hunt at farms and churches! If you are looking to save money in other ways, see ConsignmentSaleFinder.org to find a children's consignment sale near you.  Farms offering organic or sustainably grown produce are identified by the words "organic" and/or "sustainable" in green, next to their name (see "What does Organic mean?"). If they have a website, the name will be in blue and underlined; click on it and it will open their website. And if you are looking for a local farm stand, roadside stand, farm market or local farmer's market, see our new website, dedicated to those!  See your state's crop availability calendar for specific dates of upcoming crops.  This website provides local listings of pick your own (also called U-pick or PYO) farms in the United States, Canada, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and other countries. Now, more than ever, going to a farm, being outside, away from crowds, getting fresh, local produce, makes more sense than ever before! It's a fun, safe and educational to pick some fresh berries, fruit and veggies and more, then come back here to learn how to freeze, can, make jam, salsa and much more! Of course, check with the farm before you go, both to check on crop availability and hours.  See our comprehensive list of easy home canning, jam and jelly making, preserving, drying and freezing directions. Not only did I find out I have a great new source for local flowers, but I also got to meet the sweetest "flower farmHer"! Georgia Monroe's passion for flowers and operating her own farm was undoubted! I loved chatting with her at the AMAZING Basecamp Farms. More on Georgia: Having grown up on a cattle and horse ranch outside of San Angelo, Texas, the love for the outdoors is deep for Georgia as she is now a 5th generation farmer in Texas. One grandfather, Bill Helwig, was a cotton farmer and gin manager for 30 years, and raised a small herd of Hereford Cattle. Her other Grandfather, Eddie Huckabee, was a wheat farmer with a small herd of Black Angus Cattle. Her dad, Todd Huckabee, had a cattle ranch and grew winter wheat for grazing, as well as rodeoed on the side, participating in team roping events, calf roping, and steer wrestling. Almost all generations had large gardens at one time or another and Georgia learned about landscaping from her parents who had beautiful properties landscaped by themselves. Georgia was also very active in 4-H and FFA, participating on the Livestock Judging Team and showing market lambs and breeding ewes at various Texas Livestock Shows. After her high school graduation, Georgia studied nursing, graduating in 2010 and began working at a hospital as a Registered Nurse while her husband, Jordan, served in the Army in Killeen, TX. Around that same time, Georgia began learning about gardening and landscaping, which started her interest and passion for growing plants. Over the next 8 years, she learned more and more about plants and then found the cut flower industry around the same time her daughter, Sedona, was born. While in-between caring for a baby, she began to study all she could about growing cut flowers specifically, as she loved having fresh flowers in the home but couldn't afford to buy them each week and just wasn't happy with what was available at the grocery store. Thus began the journey to start a flower farm so she could grow thousands of blooms to share with the community. It is now very much a family affair, as she runs the daily operations and Jordan is the Chief Weed Officer and Lawn Mower. Sedona, now six years old, helps care for the chickens and barn cats, and plays in a old horse water trough while Georgia washes buckets each week. Together, they care for the farm, living there full time now officially since January of 2019. Starting their fourth season in 2021, they grow year round with 30 different crops, with sunflowers being the primary crop but they grow many seasonal favorites include dahlias, anemones, ranunculus, poppies, cosmos, zinnias, marigolds, and more! The farm has become a local destination attraction and starting in 2020 started offering more on the farm events including “Pick Your Own,” workshops, classes and hosting private dinners and events in the Event Center Pavilion that was built in the fall of 2019. They also offer the property and crops as photography session locations, and also opened an on the farm flower shop in the summer of 2020 to give better access to customers during the week. There are still many projects to come, which will take years to complete, but as Georgia's mom likes to say, “Rome was not built in a day.” *Connect with Georgia* IG:@basecampfarms Website: www.basecampfarms.com Keep up to date with all things "The Dirt" by following along on Social Media IG: @agchicks https://www.instagram.com/agchicks/ FB: Ag Chicks https://www.facebook.com/agchicks Watch the visual version of every episode on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjxACPclc7yeXtl1RiWa0sA Shop Ag Chicks apparel: https://shopjunkndisorderly.myshopify...
