“At home, mindfulness is an app, a tool to fight the noise. In the wild, peace and calm rule by default … Out in the open, my mind is released from the noise. It sways with the trees and flows with the rivers. It blows over snow tipped mountaintops and down into wide sunlit valleys expanding to fill its surroundings. The vistas are bigger, but there is less to know.” -        Jude Kriwald   Today, we are taking a journey to one of the most remote and underexplored places on the African continent. The Gola Rainforest straddles the border of Liberia and Sierra Leone, and is home to the Kissi, Mende and Gola tribes. To walk through it would be difficult. To try and a ride a bike, would be insane. Nonetheless that is exactly what adventurer Jude Kriwald decided to do.   At 20 years old Jude knew exactly what he wanted to do. He'd just returned from a 13-month trip cycling from England to India, and he wanted more. He wanted to be an adventurer and dedicate his life to pure joy of exploring the world. But slowly, inevitably, that dream faded as life, and career, took over. Ten years passed. His mental health deteriorated. He would lie awake at night wondering how he let is all slip away.  Until one day, he'd had enough. He flew to Senegal, got on his bike with the plan to spend three-months riding from there to Liberia. But things did not go to plan.    “Alone and in the wild, I am beautifully weird and joyously free. It's not that my rituals and quirks fit in better, they simply exist, unobserved. The road cares not and the sun shines equally on all. In nature I find reprieve. Alone I find myself.”   FIND OUT MORE Jude made a short documentary film about this journey, called Alone Across Gola. BoomplayYoutubeAmazonBio“We Were Golden,” written and recorded this year, is classic, as-good-as-it-gets 1960s California beach rock. It is many other things, also, including a yet-to-be golden oldie. It is oldie gold alright, but melted down, re-refined and crafted into something brand new. Mike Mahoney, a California native, lived that time and, with his co-writer and producer David Blackburn, wrote it into the song. The track was released under Mike's band name, Mikey's In The Mustang. “I wanted to write a tribute song to Brian Wilson for all the inspiration gave us,” he said. “Not so much the cars and the surf songs but for the romanticism of being young – the true ‘California Sound.'” But that wasn't actually the start. Back in the day, before the Army, before he went to Vietnam, he played in a group and wrote songs. Fifty-five years later, age 75, after success as an entrepreneur and real estate developer, he returned to his music. “Some of my family and an old friend suggested to me that I record some of the songs I wrote back then. I never got to record them, and it was a lifelong dream to go into the studio and see what could happen. So, that is what led to the release of my album On The Road.” It was to be a vanity album, one and done.“But then, I thought as a final project I would write a tribute song to Brian. His music has been a soundtrack for my life.” For youngsters, that would be Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, back when rock was not yet even a teenager. “It was several months of us reworking it and trying to make it tell a story, to make sense. My concept was to do it in a sort of ‘Good Vibrations' fashion, with three movements.”First movement, the place — told in surf, sand and highway rock:We were golden, in endless summer sandWe were golden, we thought we had it plannedSunset Strip's alive at night, the Byrds are on the stageSpringfield's in the canyon — man, they're all the rageSecond movement, the soft, slow, romantic middle — nighttime on the beach:On that summer night, with your tender touch and kissI am falling in love…with you. Finally, “the reprise,” he calls it — the music back on the road, barreling down the highway, but this time the vibe is the time, the era:Can't we just stay free and young, playing our guitars?'Cuz at the battle of the bands tonight, we're taking off for MarsThe YouTube video tells the story visually. The tribute extends to the instrumentation. He wanted '60s-period instruments to produce '60s-period sound.“One of the problems nowadays is it's recorded digitally, and digital doesn't let you get some of the sounds that you could get if you were doing it reel-to-reel like in 1967. So, what we used were all vintage instruments.”Working with David as arranger and musician as well as co-writer and producer, the song became a reality.  “I'm the lyricist and the concept guy who started this project, but I decided not to sing on it because it wasn't going to come out the way I wanted.” What he wanted was authenticity, which is why he recruited as vocalists the Croome brothers, Patch and Liam, from their band, Daring Greatly.“I wanted younger voices who are brothers to get the harmony that only siblings can do, like the Wilson brothers did back then,” said Mike. He said that people who previewed the song told him it sounded like a “1967 hit that never got released.”“That encouraged us to create a video and a Netflix-series type script, and that led to a soundtrack album to go along with the script.” “We Were Golden” has evolved from tribute song to story to a full-blown project involving not only music but television — a streaming series or movie telling the story of “a group of college kids in 1967 who also were in a band,” to quote the elevator pitch for the script. The key parts of the story are the band members, the innocence of their lives in Orange County in the '60s, and the effect of the Vietnam War on them and their generation. The storyline moves to 2017 when the band reunites for “one of the concerts that they never got to do — a true homecoming.” A Mikey's In The Mustang concert will be filmed this spring.Mikey's In The Mustang is on a roll. They are not trying to turn back some cosmic clock. They are bringing something precious from that time into this one.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/creator-to-creators-with-meosha-bean--4460322/support.

"Breathing clean air is every child's human right," says grassroots campaigner Rosamund Adoo-Kissi-Debrah, while sharing the heartbreaking story of her seven-year-old daughter, Ella Roberta, whose asthma was triggered to a fatal point by air pollution. Now, Adoo-Kissi-Debrah is on a mission to raise awareness about the harmful effects of unsafe air on our health and the planet. In this moving talk, she details why governments have an urgent responsibility to take action on air pollution -- and ensure that all children have a chance to live full and healthy lives. After the talk our host Shoshana speaks with health policy expert Dr. Cara James on the necessary steps towards protecting everyone's right to a healthy environment.

This book is an original and comparative study of reactions in West and East Africa to the persecution and attempted annihilation of Jews in Europe and in former German colonies in sub-Saharan Africa during the Second World War. An intellectual and diplomatic history of World War II and the Holocaust, Africans and the Holocaust: Perceptions and Responses of Colonized and Sovereign Peoples (Routledge, 2021) looks at the period from the perspectives of the colonized subjects of the Gold Coast, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Kenya, Tanganyika, and Uganda, as well as the sovereign peoples of Liberia and Ethiopia, who wrestled with the social and moral questions that the war and the Holocaust raised. The five main chapters of the book explore the pre-Holocaust history of relations between Jews and Africans in West and East Africa, perceptions of Nazism in both regions, opinions of World War II, interpretations of the Holocaust, and responses of the colonized and sovereign peoples of West and East Africa to efforts by Great Britain to resettle certain categories of Jewish refugees from Europe in the two regions before and during the Holocaust. Nomoli figurines are among the earliest works of art from Sierra Leone. The figurines and similar stone sculptures are the only known remains of an empire that existed hundreds of years ago in what is now Sierra Leone and Liberia. Portuguese explorers first recorded the existence of the figurines in the fifteenth century. Nomoli figurines are often associated with the Mende people as they are often buried on Mende land. The Mende and Kissi people of Sierra Leone place these small statues near their homes and in fields of crops as a form of protection, in the belief that the Nomoli figurines will give them good health and good harvests. They also consult the statues as oracles. During the 20th century, Sierra Leonean immigrants brought their ancestors' Nomoli figurines with them to the United States as a way to preserve the spiritual powers of the past.

Breathing clean air is every child's human right," says grassroots campaigner Rosamund Adoo-Kissi-Debrah, while sharing the heartbreaking story of her seven-year-old daughter, Ella Roberta, whose asthma was triggered to a fatal point by air pollution.

This week on The Sound Kitchen you'll hear the answer to the question about the opposition political party that joined Macron's party to pass spending legislation. There's the Bonus Question, the “Listeners Corner” with Michael Fitzpatrick, and “Music from Erwan”. All that, and the new quiz question, too. Just click on the “Audio” arrow above and enjoy!  Hello everyone! Welcome to The Sound Kitchen weekly podcast, published every Saturday – here on our website, or wherever you get your podcasts. You'll hear the winner's names announced and the week's quiz question, along with all the other ingredients you've grown accustomed to: your letters and essays, “On This Day”, quirky facts and news, interviews, and great music … so be sure and listen every week. Erwan and I are busy cooking up special shows with your musical requests, so get them in! Send your musical requests to thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr  Tell us why you like the piece of music, too – it makes it more interesting for us all! Be sure you check out our wonderful podcasts! In addition to the breaking news articles on our site, with in-depth analysis of current affairs in France and across the globe, we have several podcasts which will leave you hungry for more. There's Paris Perspective, Africa Calling, Spotlight on France, and of course, The Sound Kitchen. We have an award-winning bilingual series - an old-time radio show, with actors (!) to help you learn French, called Les voisins du 12 bis. And there is the excellent International Report, too. As you see, sound is still quite present in the RFI English service.  Keep checking our website for updates on the latest from our excellent staff of journalists. You never know what we'll surprise you with! To listen to our podcasts from your PC, go to our website and click on the three horizontal bars on the top right, choose “Listen to RFI / Podcasts”, and you've got ‘em ! You can either listen directly or subscribe and receive them directly on your mobile phone. To listen to our podcasts from your mobile phone, slide through the tabs just under the lead article (the first tab is “Headline News”) until you see “Podcasts”, and choose your show.  Teachers, take note!  I save postcards and stamps from all over the world to send to you for your students. If you would like stamps and postcards for your students, just write and let me know. The address is english.service@rfi.fr  If you would like to donate stamps and postcards, feel free! Our address is listed below.  Another idea for your students: Br. Gerald Muller, my beloved music teacher from St Edward's University in Austin, Texas, has been writing books for young adults in his retirement – and they are free! There is a volume of biographies of painters and musicians called Gentle Giants, and an excellent biography of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., too. They are also a good way to help you improve your English - that's how I worked on my French, reading books which were meant for young readers – and I guarantee you, it's a good method for improving your language skills. To get Br. Gerald's free books, click here. Independent RFI English Clubs: Be sure to always include Audrey Iattoni (audrey.iattoni@rfi.fr) from our Listener Relations department in all your RFI Club correspondence. Remember to copy me (thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr) when you write to her so that I know what is going on, too. N.B.: You do not need to send her your quiz answers! Email overload! And don't forget, there is a Facebook page just for you, the independent RFI English Clubs. Only members of RFI English Clubs can belong to this group page, so when you apply to join, be sure you include the name of your RFI Club and your membership number. Everyone can look at it, but only members of the group can post on it. If you haven't yet asked to join the group, and you are a member of an independent, officially recognized RFI English club, go to the Facebook link above, and fill out the questionnaire !!!!! (if you do not answer the questions, I click “decline”). There's a Facebook page for members of the general RFI Listeners Club too. Just click on the link and fill out the questionnaire, and you can connect with your fellow Club members around the world. Be sure you include your RFI Listeners Club membership number (most of them begin with an A, followed by a number) in the questionnaire, or I will have to click “Decline”, which I don't like to do! This week's quiz: On 6 August, I asked you a question about an article written by RFI English journalist Michael Fitzpatrick, about Macron's loss of an overall majority in France's National Assembly, the lower house of Parliament. This means his party's proposed laws will have a much harder time passing than in his last presidential term when he had the absolute majority. Compromise, coalitions – all that's now necessary, and we've been watching closely how this new political landscape will play out. As Michael wrote in his article “After angry debate, French parliament agrees spending power budget changes”, you'll read exactly how that is going … as Michael put it: “After four days of frequently violent verbal clashes, the French National Assembly on Wednesday morning finally passed the budgetary adjustments needed to finance measures aimed at boosting spending power.” I asked you to send me the answer to this question: How many deputies from the right-leaning French political party “Les Républicans” joined with members from Macron's party “Renaissance” to pass the adjustments to the 2022 budget? The answer is, as Michael wrote: “The presidential faction and its allies profited from the support of the 54 deputies of the Republican right, which is anxious to position itself as a ‘constructive opposition.” In addition to the quiz question, there was the Bonus Question: “When are you at your best?” The winners are: Khondaker Rafiqul Islam, who's the president of the Source of Knowledge Club in Naogaon, Bangladesh, and is also the winner of this week's Bonus Question. The other winners this week are RFI Listeners Club members Mogire Machuki from Kissi, Kenya; Hans Verner Lollike from Hedehusene, Denmark; Ding Lu from Jiangsu Province in China, and RFI English listener Sultana Begum from Sirajganj, Bangladesh.   Congratulations winners! Here's the music you heard on this week's program: “April in Paris” by Vernon Duke and Yip Harburg, performed by Count Basie and the Mills Brothers; “September” by Al McKay, Maurice White, and Allee Willis, performed by Earth, Wind & Fire; “L'Indifference” by Tony Murena, performed by Murena and the Café Accordion Orchestra; “The Flight of the Bumblebee” by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov; “The Cakewalk” from Children's Corner by Claude Debussy, performed by the composer, and “Dancing on the Tables” written by Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, and performed by the Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen Quartet.    Do you have a musical request? Send it to thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr  This week's question ... you have to listen to the show to participate. After you've listened to the show, refer to our article “French director receives two awards for debut film at Venice festival” to help you with the answer. You have until 10 October to enter this week's quiz; the winners will be announced on the 15 October podcast. Ep50 - Whiteness and air pollution: Rosamund Adoo-Kissi-Debrah is a BreatheLife Ambassador and founder of the Ella Roberta Family Foundation, based in London. Rosamund became a clean air advocate after her 9-year-old daughter, Ella, died in 2013 from a rare and severe form of asthma. Rosamund spent several years campaigning for a second coroner's inquest into Ella's death to determine whether it was linked to air pollution. In a landmark decision in December 2020, the coroner ruled that it was. Ella is now the first person in the world to have air pollution listed as a cause of death on her death certificate. Rosamund is a teacher in schools and lecturer at universities. She is also an Honorary Fellow of the British Science Association and was named among You Magazine's 21 Most Extraordinary Women of 2021, British Vogue's 25 Extraordinary Women of 2021, The Times' Green Power List 2021 and BBC Radio 4 Woman's Hour's Power List 2020.
