From Navy SEAL to Humanitarian: Ephraim Mattos on Courage, Sacrifice, and Saving Lives in War Zones. In this powerful episode, Marcus and Melanie meet with Ephraim Mattos, a former US Navy SEAL and founder of Stronghold Rescue & Relief. After leaving the SEAL teams in 2017 at the age of 24, Ephraim made a bold decision: instead of returning home, he volunteered on the front lines of the war against ISIS in Mosul, Iraq. His experiences there would change him forever. Ephraim shares harrowing details from his time with the Free Burma Rangers, a humanitarian group that provides aid to civilians in war zones. He recounts the unimaginable horrors he witnessed, from civilians fleeing the brutality of ISIS to the daring rescue missions he and his team conducted under constant enemy fire. One of these missions, during which Ephraim was shot while rescuing a young Iraqi girl, exemplifies the courage and sacrifice required to save lives in the most dangerous places on Earth. We dive deep into Ephraim's personal journey, chronicled in his book City of Death: Humanitarian Warriors in the Battle of Mosul, coauthored with American Sniper writer Scott McEwen. The conversation explores what it's like to face death on a daily basis and how Ephraim and his fellow volunteers embodied the credo: "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." In this episode, Ephraim reflects on the emotional and physical scars of war, his recovery from his gunshot wound, and his unwavering commitment to helping those in need, even in the most perilous conditions. His stories of bravery, resilience, and humanity will leave you speechless. In This Episode You Will Hear: • Probably the biggest thing I learned in training that applies to everyday life is when things go really, really bad, one of the best ways of dealing with it, and actually pushing through is to laugh at it. (1:29) • I had my finger on the trigger. I had pressure on the trigger, just waiting for them to come out so I could get a body shot, and 2 heads pop out. It turns out it's two little girls. One was maybe ten; the other may five or six. They were weeping, crying, and they were running straight at me. And they were both wearing backpacks just like the backpacks that are just like the backpacks we just blew up an hour earlier. And they're running straight at me. (25:22) • I was in a firefight in Iraq, technically before my last day in the Navy. (29:19) • [The Iraqi army] They weren't super organized , or marksmanship, but as far as their courage and willingness to go toe to toe with ISIS, and I watched multiple time – an Iraqi tank would drive up, get blown up by an ISIS car bomb. And they would keep going. (31:25) • We assist every way we can, and we build relationships, by showing them we care, we're here to help, we're not crazy, we're not her to get in a gunfight. We just want to help you. (33:43) • We provide frontline mentorship for active security threats. If a tribe is facing genocide, we'll advise them on how to best use the resources they already have. (34:09) • There's a certain level of evil that people just don't see or understand. They don't understand a military unit would go into a village and just slaughter everybody. (36:06) • For people who actually care, what do you do? How do you help? (42:48) • If you care about what's going on in these conflicts, find multiple organizations that you like and give a little bit so several of them. You can make an impact, without having to take all the risk. (43:50) • 99.9 percent of our job is logistics, medical care, training medical care, suffering in the jungle. Yes, you're armed, but you're not there to get your rocks off. (48:11) • We bring in primarily guys with medic training. We don't bring in full-fledged doctors because the kind of stuff we're dealing with is emergency care – people stepping on land mines or getting shot. (50:38) • A couple of American missionaries were killed in Haiti. Stuff like that happens all the time. Nobody hears about it. It gets instantly buried under celebrity gossip and such.

Do you want to know how it feels to face two little girls ready to blow themselves up ?   I am greatly honored to have Ephraim Mattos  on the podcast. Honored and lucky since he is receives a lot of requests for interviews and podcasts and is very selective.   The one thing that convinced him to accept my invitation was our common interest for Seneca. Amazing to realize that a philosopher that lived 2000 years ago can bring a former Navy Seal to accept discussing with a French podcaster.   Ephraim Mattos is indeed a former Navy Seal , the very famous and unique unit from the American Navy. The elite of the elite.   Ephraim shares with us his childhood and how his parent's education, rooted in aiding the community and in resilience, shaped his personality and brought him to make very unique choices for his life.   Indeed, after living through a horrendous experience in Afghanistan, where he faced to little girls who were ready to blow themselves up but finally renounced, Ephraim decided to dedicate his life in helping civilians in war zones.   After retiring from the Navy, he buys a ticket on a commercial plane to Iraq and joins a group of volunteers (former soldiers) to provide aid care to the wounded and help children, women and the elderly to escape. Ephraim and his comrades where the last line of defense between ISIS monsters and innocent civilians. Using his exceptional skills, he helped save dozens of them in particular during the horrible battle of Mosul.   Following this first experience, Ephraim founded a non-profit organization named “Stronghold rescue and relief ”, whose mission is to help civilian populations in war zones by teaching them basic medical skills, how to us communication tools and how to defend themselves.   Stronghold is particularly involved in Burma besides the Karen population who is persecuted by the military junta which is aiming at an ethnic cleansing of the minority.    I have never met once in my life a person like Ephraim. Without any political agenda, with no motivation other that his deeply rooted humanity, Ephraim sacrifices his life, uses his unique skillset, to helping the weak and oppressed.    Some people talk about oppression, some people protest, some people tweet…Ephraim actually risks his life enabling people to defend themselves.   Such a mission is not risk-free. Suffering from PTSD, Ephraim is in constant tension as he saw and lived so many horrific events. But he found meaning, through his actions but also in philosophy. He reads Seneca every day to help him grow and heal.   These are all the reasons why Ephraim is such a unique guest. I hope you will enjoy this episode and please, don't hesitate to go on Stronghold and rescue's web site to help the organization.   Références:  City of death : humanitarian warriors in the battle of Mosul  (E. Ephraim Mattos graduated high school in 2010, joined the United States Navy, successfully graduated BUD/s (Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL) training, and became a member of a west coast SEAL Team. After leaving the US Navy SEAL Teams in 2017, at the age of 24, he flew to Iraq and joined a small group of volunteer humanitarians known as the Free Burma Rangers. Until being shot by ISIS on a suicidal rescue mission, Mattos witnessed unexplainable acts of courage and sacrifice by the Free Burma Rangers, who, while under heavy machine gun and mortar fire, assaulted across ISIS minefields, used themselves as human shields, and sprinted down ISIS-infested streets-all to retrieve wounded civilians. Ephraim founded Stronghold Rescue and Relief, a non-profit dedicated to sending highly trained former Special Operations personnel into the heart of violent conflicts around the world in order to find and help the families caught in the crossfire, as well as assist oppressed people in multiple countries facing genocide and human trafficking. Today, Ephraim continues to conduct humanitarian rescue and relief operations around the world. Stronghold Rescue and Relief City of Death by Ephraim Mattos

Speaking 1:1 with Ephraim Mattos, former Navy SEAL sniper and combat medic, survivor of the deadly urban Battle of Mosul, producer/host Jeff Gabriel discovers an uncomplicated, humble, and candid guy…someone to have a beer with at a local bar. But Mattos has experienced and survived atrocities of war that few of us can even imagine.Retired from the military, he continues to join other humanitarian warriors in saving those least likely to be helped by conventional humanitarian or missionary work – such as the Free Burma Rangers on the frontlines of the war on ISIS. He is founder of Stronghold Rescue & Relief for people suffering from genocide and human trafficking, reinventing the way things are done in the humanitarian world. “I want to be on the frontlines,” he says, “going into places where other people can’t go to do things other people can’t do.”Share some fascinating insights into Mattos’ background and psyche which, combined with his unique skill set, continue to propel him into harm’s way to make the impossible possible.

Mattos has an upcoming book releasing in October co authored by Scott McEwen (the author of American Sniper) called “City of Death: Humanitarian Warriors in the battle for Mosul”. Ephraim spent months in Iraq with the Free Burma Rangers providing medical care to Iraqi’s wounded during the battle to re take Mosul from ISIS. There is a viral video taken during the battle where Mattos, and a former U.S. Marine step out from behind a tank to provide covering fire for David Eubank as he sprints under ISIS sniper fire to rescue a little girl.
