On December 8 the Islamist rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, known as HTS, overthrew the brutal government of Bashar al-Assad in Syria. There's a new regime in Damascus, but in northeast Syria a lot remains the same. It's still one of the most chaotic places in the world. WORLD correspondent Caleb Welde traveled around the region in November of 2023 with the Free Burma Rangers. That's a Christian aid group working in some of the world's most dangerous war zones. This is the first of two episodes based on Caleb's reporting last year. Today Caleb will tell us the story of a Syrian woman named Hawler Sheikhe. She was 13 years old when ISIS roared into Syria in 2014. But when ISIS forced her to flee her home, she found herself on a journey that would eventually lead her to Christ– and beatings, bombings, and death threats.Audio from:CNNSky NewsNBC NewsEuronewsSupport WORLD News Group at wng.org/donate.
David Eubank returns to the Break It Down Show with Pete A Turner. David is a former Green Beret who's post service work focuses on providing aid in conflict zones. He and his Free Burma Rangers have focused on war relief in Syria, Burma, Ukraine...basically, anywhere where there is a need, FBR goes to help. The bulk of David's mission is conducted in Burma. But, FBR ran to Afghanistan when it fell, and they'll continue to venture out where help is needed. Even if the war isn't frontline news, FBR is working to reduce harm and render aid.
From Navy SEAL to Humanitarian: Ephraim Mattos on Courage, Sacrifice, and Saving Lives in War Zones. In this powerful episode, Marcus and Melanie meet with Ephraim Mattos, a former US Navy SEAL and founder of Stronghold Rescue & Relief. After leaving the SEAL teams in 2017 at the age of 24, Ephraim made a bold decision: instead of returning home, he volunteered on the front lines of the war against ISIS in Mosul, Iraq. His experiences there would change him forever. Ephraim shares harrowing details from his time with the Free Burma Rangers, a humanitarian group that provides aid to civilians in war zones. He recounts the unimaginable horrors he witnessed, from civilians fleeing the brutality of ISIS to the daring rescue missions he and his team conducted under constant enemy fire. One of these missions, during which Ephraim was shot while rescuing a young Iraqi girl, exemplifies the courage and sacrifice required to save lives in the most dangerous places on Earth. We dive deep into Ephraim's personal journey, chronicled in his book City of Death: Humanitarian Warriors in the Battle of Mosul, coauthored with American Sniper writer Scott McEwen. The conversation explores what it's like to face death on a daily basis and how Ephraim and his fellow volunteers embodied the credo: "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." In this episode, Ephraim reflects on the emotional and physical scars of war, his recovery from his gunshot wound, and his unwavering commitment to helping those in need, even in the most perilous conditions. His stories of bravery, resilience, and humanity will leave you speechless. In This Episode You Will Hear: • Probably the biggest thing I learned in training that applies to everyday life is when things go really, really bad, one of the best ways of dealing with it, and actually pushing through is to laugh at it. (1:29) • I had my finger on the trigger. I had pressure on the trigger, just waiting for them to come out so I could get a body shot, and 2 heads pop out. It turns out it's two little girls. One was maybe ten; the other may five or six. They were weeping, crying, and they were running straight at me. And they were both wearing backpacks just like the backpacks that are just like the backpacks we just blew up an hour earlier. And they're running straight at me. (25:22) • I was in a firefight in Iraq, technically before my last day in the Navy. (29:19) • [The Iraqi army] They weren't super organized , or marksmanship, but as far as their courage and willingness to go toe to toe with ISIS, and I watched multiple time – an Iraqi tank would drive up, get blown up by an ISIS car bomb. And they would keep going. (31:25) • We assist every way we can, and we build relationships, by showing them we care, we're here to help, we're not crazy, we're not her to get in a gunfight. We just want to help you. (33:43) • We provide frontline mentorship for active security threats. If a tribe is facing genocide, we'll advise them on how to best use the resources they already have. (34:09) • There's a certain level of evil that people just don't see or understand. They don't understand a military unit would go into a village and just slaughter everybody. (36:06) • For people who actually care, what do you do? How do you help? (42:48) • If you care about what's going on in these conflicts, find multiple organizations that you like and give a little bit so several of them. You can make an impact, without having to take all the risk. (43:50) • 99.9 percent of our job is logistics, medical care, training medical care, suffering in the jungle. Yes, you're armed, but you're not there to get your rocks off. (48:11) • We bring in primarily guys with medic training. We don't bring in full-fledged doctors because the kind of stuff we're dealing with is emergency care – people stepping on land mines or getting shot. (50:38) • A couple of American missionaries were killed in Haiti. Stuff like that happens all the time. Nobody hears about it. It gets instantly buried under celebrity gossip and such. This week David Eubank from the Free Burma Rangers (FBR) joins the podcast to talk about his missionary calling. David talks about doing justice, but we need to avoid revenge. While not easy, we need to instead correct the injustice with love. FBR respond by getting the news out in war torn areas (Burma, Sudan, Kurdistan, Iraq, and Ukraine) and supplying first aid treatment, while sharing and showing the love of Jesus. There are three rules in FBR: You have to do if for love, You can't run if others can not run (don't be a coward), and Be able to read and write. David shares his harrowing stories of being under fire alongside his family. David discusses how he has learned to allow God to move by praying, here is my request, but if not. Oh how I love to hear people's stories and what allows them to experience God that encourages their faith. You might be tuning in this week with more of a skeptical ear thinking “I haven't experienced God to the fullness that others have talked about” and for that I just want to encourage you to keep showing up! Keep inviting Jesus in and keep asking him to strengthen your faith. I just know he's gracious enough to meet you where you're at. And if you let him, like really let him in, it'll be one epic journey! So today we have a really fun conversation to dive into with filmmaker and director, Brent Gugel. We just so happen to talk about the amazing film, Free Burma Rangers, which is a documentary film exploring the extraordinary 20-year journey of missionaries Dave and Karen Eubank and their kids, as they venture into war zones where they are fighting to bring hope. The film itself is a testimony to people trying to walk after God, full of their own limitations, sins and mistakes, facing real enemies AND asking “CAN LOVE WIN?!” We talk about the film as well as radical ways God moved during the process. Even some of the other “no way but God moments” of Brent's career. Brent Gudgel is a documentary film director and founder of the ministry Deidox. His credits include the documentary Free Burma Rangers which won Best Feature at the Justice Film Festival in NYC, was in theaters nationwide, and is now on Amazon Video. Previous work has been on Showtime, Hulu, for the Olympics, and featured during the Super Bowl. With over 20 years of experience, Brent has also directed and consulted on 250+ short documentaries for organizations such as Toyota, LA Clippers, Union Rescue Mission, Crisis Pregnancy Centers, Saddleback, Willow Creek, Goodwill, and IJM, among others. He currently resides in Merced, CA with his wife and two growing children. There comes a point when we embrace what God is doing in our lives, twists, turns and unknowns. And I believe we ALL desire for tangible evidence of God working IN our lives to at least show us he's real, right?! And the point isn't the miracles in and of themselves…. These are unexpected and always come in different ways for EVERY ONE just because God is a personal God. But we want to keep in might that in pursuing him, we want to magnify HIM, NOT the signs. I love the journey we're all on! God is so unique and so intricately involved in our lives. I'm confident that when people experience the love of the father, they'll want nothing less and no counterfeits either. I'm so excited to share more of Brent's story with you today. I hope his experiences give you the courage to believe God for more, as well! Episode #178: Step into the hidden world of Burmese small arms, where intrigue, danger, and geopolitical secrets intertwine. Miles Vining, a former US Marine and member of the Free Burma Rangers, recounts how his obsession with digital weapons in video games led him to start documenting real-life firearms in Myanmar.Miles discovered a vast array of small arms sourced from unlikely corners of the globe. He describes the refurbishment and resourcefulness that keeps Burmese weaponry operational long after it was decommissioned elsewhere, as well as the intricate web of foreign influences and local production that shape the small arms landscape, and his work in unmasking the deeper political alliances they represent. But Burmese small arms are not merely tools of war; they symbolize a nation's struggle for freedom, too. Miles describes the blurred lines between suppliers and fighters, along with corrupt commanders secretly supporting those they oppose.“Diving into small arms research in Burma, you can go down some of the most amazing and fantastic rabbit holes and relationships and geopolitics and then who double crossed who and backtrack to where things are getting made and what secret deals were going on,” he says. “The whole shebang is there! But it's untouched, and nobody's interested in it, because it's the dark hole that Burma is, so it's no surprise there. It's like the world doesn't care about Burma yet again!”

Russia is supplying the Myanmar military with advanced fighter jets and training their pilots how to use them in a war against their own people. More than two years on from the coup, the country's military is facing a countrywide armed uprising and their troops are struggling to hold ground and recruit foot-soldiers. So, the strategy is turning increasingly to the air with devastating consequences. BBC's Asia editor Rebecca Henschke follows those fighting back on the ground and in the air. And meets defectors from the airforce who give exclusive insight into the strategy and psychology behind those operating these deadly machines. (Photo credit: Free Burma Rangers)
Ephraim Mattos graduated high school in 2010, joined the United States Navy, successfully graduated BUD/s (Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL) training, and became a member of a west coast SEAL Team. After leaving the US Navy SEAL Teams in 2017, at the age of 24, he flew to Iraq and joined a small group of volunteer humanitarians known as the Free Burma Rangers. Until being shot by ISIS on a suicidal rescue mission, Mattos witnessed unexplainable acts of courage and sacrifice by the Free Burma Rangers, who, while under heavy machine gun and mortar fire, assaulted across ISIS minefields, used themselves as human shields, and sprinted down ISIS-infested streets-all to retrieve wounded civilians. Ephraim founded Stronghold Rescue and Relief, a non-profit dedicated to sending highly trained former Special Operations personnel into the heart of violent conflicts around the world in order to find and help the families caught in the crossfire, as well as assist oppressed people in multiple countries facing genocide and human trafficking. Today, Ephraim continues to conduct humanitarian rescue and relief operations around the world. David Eubank saw a problem—and instead of philosophizing about it, he decided to become a solution. As newlyweds, David and his wife moved to Burma (now Myanmar), home of the world's longest-running civil war, with a vision to care for the hurting and displaced. That was 25 years ago, and it was the birth of the Free Burma Rangers, one of the world's premiere humanitarian organizations. David is an incredibly aggressive and godly man, with a story you won't quickly forget.
