Podchaser: https://podchaser.com/crimewave Twitter: https://twitter.com/crimewavepod Website: https://crimewavepodcast.com/ Hello, and welcome to the Crime Wave archives. I want to take a few mins for some housekeeping, it has been almost a year since the podcast launch, and today's episode will be the season 1 finale. Season 2 will be back early next year,  so follow me on Twitter, or you can check the website cimewavepodcast.com to find out when season 2 launches. Of course, you can always subscribe to the podcast to get notified when the latest episodes drop. All links are in the show notes. I want to take a moment to thank this season's sponsor iNetGuardian, your support has blown me away, and I am truly grateful. Lastly, I want to thank the shows' biggest supporter to date, listener Jonathan in New Zealand. Your support is overwhelming, and please accept my sincerest thanks! Okay, this one will be a wild ride, let's get to it, buckle up! The human mind is nature's most potent force. We can dream up unlimited ideas to solve problems. The adaptive and fluid nature of our minds has allowed us to evolve rapidly. We are in a constant state of learning, and with that comes adaptability. The malleable nature of our exposure to experience leads to the adaptation of our intention. We have the ability to focus our intention and to generate change from that focus. But can the power of intention affect reality? We have all heard stories of extraordinary phenomena like telekinesis (the ability to move objects with our minds)or the apparatus of spiritual practices like using a voodoo doll, which is used to affect the spirit of the target of your intentions. Now, there are less extraordinary beliefs but no less supernatural like the power in the belief to heal oneself, then we have a placebo effect. Other uses of our intentions include having imaginary friends, with their personalities, likes, and needs. There are so many anecdotal accounts of the paranormal, countless tales of the extraordinary, and there's got to be something to it, right? Is it possible for our minds to manifest a thoughtform? Do we have the power to make the supernatural a reality?  In today's episode, we will examine the story of the belief in the power to manifest a supernatural being. And how this belief blurred the lines between reality and fantasy in the attempt to bring to life a horrifying figure standing 8 ft tall with long, rangy arms and no facial features, a creature otherwise known as the Slenderman. Many argue that social media has made us less social. Crowds of people with their eyes laser-focused on the dim blue light emanating from a mobile device as they go about their daily lives.  This scene plays out in almost all environments and has become the norm. Human interaction is vital to our survival as a species. What is the human connection but a series of data exchanges via the subtle interpretation of our vocal inflections, what we feel, what we see, smell, and taste? The continuous amalgamation of interactions between people. The intricate combinations of social interaction as the sum of data points captured by our five senses. For the next hour, If you suspend the belief that technology has driven a wedge between us, then you will see how it could be argued that we haven't lost our ability to connect because of technology. Instead, we have evolved to allow an agent to hijack our senses. This technology agent acts as a proxy, serving as a conduit of information between us. It allows us to connect with anyone in the world, it documents our interactions, it opens a door for those compelled to do harm. This agent has conditioning algorithms designed to elicit behaviors similar to addiction. We are at the genesis of our relationship with technology, and we vastly underestimate those willing to exploit it to do us harm. In today's episode, we will examine the story of how a tech agent can be used to seduce, mislead, and evoke the feelings of deep human connection. To dismantle adolescence and how this inveterate agent is already ingrained in all of our lives.   Episode Sources and Music can be found here: https://crimewavepodcast.com/the-agent

Boomerangs have been around for tens of thousands of years… but how exactly do they work? What is it about the simple but clever design that keeps them flying through the air… and why on earth do they come back to you!? It takes a village to raise a child. We accept this as fact. The essence of the meaning is that kids learn from their environment, and the more situations they are exposed to, the better equipped they will be to handle them once they're adults. To achieve this, we put our trust in institutions, institutions like our community schools, religious organizations, and youth organizations.  We have all heard stories of the creep who watched kids on playgrounds, at malls, or any public place.  Parents are keen to this behavior and protect at all costs. Sexual offenders with pedophilia have no limits, and underestimating their desire, can prove to be tragic. They pose as model citizens cloaking themselves in kindness and authority. They groom their community, parents, and children alike.  Imagine for a moment, tough as that may be, what the perfect environment would look like for a sexual offender. It would be a secluded place away from parents, like the woods or a camp. A place where life skills are taught to build trust, to gain access, to reduce suspicion, to groom. Now I know what you're thinking, "there is no way I would let a child of mine go to such a place with someone I don't trust." For those of you well versed in true crime, I know that as I described the perfect environment to you, your Spidey sense went off, and alarm bells were blazing. I was shocked to find out that the ideal environment exists, not only in our nightmares but also nestled within a historic institution, hidden in plain sight, one known for its oath. In today's episode, we will examine one of the largest cases in history of documented sexual abuse that went unreported. We are going to look at how one of the world's most respected and trusted youth organizations became a beacon for pedophiles. We are going to look at how they documented the sexual abuse of their scouts, and why it was never reported to authorities, let alone parents. Today's episode will prompt you to reassess the confidence you place in trusted community organizations. Episode Sources and Music can be found here: https://crimewavepodcast.com/the-oath

The maternal instinct, is it fact or fantasy, we all know someone who's a mother, we see them interact with their kids, and at times it seems uncanny how they can know when their child is in trouble and just how to soothe them when the time comes. Almost as if an automatic response is triggered by something they see in their kid. They follow a sequenced set of behaviors that manifest in a way that almost always results in protecting the well being of their child. Some dads are said to have the maternal instinct, but we will leave that for another show! Now, researchers debate whether or not the maternal instinct is real, looking for scientific documentation of the phenomenon, conducting studies about brain chemistry to studies that involve social development, and everything in between.  Today's episode will shed light on how there are more powerful forces in nature that can sever that imperceptible instinct. Power over people is the ability to make someone do something he or she would not otherwise do.  There are various types of power, physical, mental, and another one that is not as overt as the aforementioned, but no less impactful. That type of power is social power, which is the potential for social influence.  A person with social power attempts to control the world around them, either positively or negatively. Social status can pave the way for social power. What happens when a person who has tendencies to want to exert his power and control over his spouse earns a high social status?  In today's episode, we will examine a story of domestic violence, about a man who rose to the top of social status in his community only to fall in the most tragic of ways devastating his family along the way. Looking for love is not as difficult as it once used to be. The internet has connected us in ways we could never have imagined. It has brought us closer together and, in some ways, disconnected us even more. Finding a life partner has gotten easier with dating sites popping up every day; it seems. We size up our potential suitors by analyzing their profiles, their likes, their profession, and their lifestyle. What we don't see is the baggage that comes with that profile and subsequently, the person on the other end. Connections are made quickly, and some burn bright, so bright in fact that one can't see what's lurking just beyond the blinding light.   In today's episode, we will examine a story of love gone wrong and how love can speed towards infatuation and eventually gets consumed by obsession.   Music and Episode Sources found here: https://crimewavepodcast.com/the-obsession/

I even had the opportunity to assist him for a short stint with this case. He's retired now and over 41 years later, this case remains unsolved. Or does it? Because he's retired now, he's free to share with you the details of his work on the case. Much of his story, findings and opinions on the case have never been shared publicly and I thought it was important that he do so. If this case is ever going to have a chance at being prosecuted, word has to get out. Curiosity Killed the Rat

Hypnosis: Pseudoscience or real thing!? This episode, Kate and Matt deep dive into the world of hypnosis. Is hypnosis just a stage trick? Are people just playing along? Or can you be made to do/ think/ feel things just by being lulled into a trance? And if so, how the hell does it work?! They also chat coffee and caffeine – what is it doing in your brain and why can it give you the jitters? Is a hidden epidemic of perfectionism creating stress and anxiety? How can we escape the perfection trap in a world of curated experiences?Episode Sources:https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg24332430-600-the-misunderstood-personality-trait-that-is-causing-anxiety-and-stress/ https://www.apa.org/pubs/journals/releases/bul-bul0000138.pdfEpisode Excerpt:We keep hearing about ideas like the perfection trap. But is it real? Does the perfection trap exist? That’s probably the hardest question of today’s show.Because it’s totally subjective.Certainly - and I don’t think it’s the first time we’ve discussed this subject this yearWe are seeing an increase in the numbers of people with mental health issues. Particularly people in the generations we define as millennial and digital native. And while perfectionism isn’t generally accepted as an illness in and of itself,It has been closely linked to eating disorders, OCD, anxiety and depression. It does seem that people with those conditions are more likely to demonstrate perfectionist traits than you would expect to see in the general population. So what are we actually talking about? How are we framing or defining perfectionism?Perfectionism is hard to define in a clinical sense. And there doesn’t seem to be a clear consensus among psychologists as to its definitions although many are starting to become alarmed about the potential mental health timebomb that might be ticking away in the next generation. The closest they have come to a consensus on this issue is the 30 year old multidimensional Perfection Scale which grades participants for a series of 45 questions on a level of 1 to 7.And there is more than one type of perfectionism.Which are? There are self-oriented perfectionists. These are the people who set themselves ridiculously high goals and then feel miserable when they can’t achieve them.Like you? You’re saying it as a joke but it’s probably a fair assessment tbh.I left one line of work behind me because it was something that left a lot to chance.Even when things were at their most successful, there were always failures. And I found that very hard to cope with. I couldn’t take pleasure in the success because I only saw the failures. Then there are are Other-Oriented perfectionists…Who hold others to ridiculously high standards.Which sounds like you again…And explains why I don’t have staff anymore and work largely alone. Not because I ‘can’t find anyone good enough’ which is what you often hear from entrepreneurs who suffer from the same delusions as me.But because it’s simply unfair on the people who are doing a great job that you are unable to comprehend. And the final one: socially prescribed perfectionists? This is where perfectionism dovetails with our own set of interests. These are the people who feel an overwhelming pressure from others. That might be from bosses or colleagues, friends or family members. And, increasingly, it’s rooted in the digital sphere. Not just in social media, but in the way we communicate. And that many of those communications are shorn of context.

As Indonesia and the Amazon’s rainforests burn and the Arctic melts, radical geo-engineering projects offer a potential way out. Mostly because Matt Armitage can’t actually cope with the tropical climate he chose to live in. Today we take a look at solutions to refreeze the Arctic and how our own addiction to cold air could be warming the planet. You have an obsession with being cold. When you complain about the temperature in the recording studios, then we know it really is cold. Well, of course, when I first came to Malaysia it wasn’t as hot as it is now.In fact, I remember when I first came here, there was snow on the ground and the taxi driver at the airport instructed me not to feed the polar bears. I think you’re remembering a fever dream…All Youth is a fever dream. You wake up one morning and there’s just a stagnant eternity ahead of you. You’ll realise that one day. If you aren’t burned up in the fiery hell that is climate change, first.Nice link from hopelessness to eternal damnation…Have to say I was quite pleased with it, too. But it’s true. I find Malaysia’s climate increasingly hard to cope with. Now, I could do the solid research based thing and look up temperature and rainfall charts over the past 20 years. And compare them to similar records over the past couple of hundred. But who has time for anything that’s not on the first page of a Google search?Certainly not you…Double definitely not me.But also because I know that a lot of the problem is me and changes in the way I react to heat, which I won’t bore you with.Because you’re bald and overweight and very very pale?As I said. Boring reasons that don’t need to be discussed in detail on-air.In fact, I woke up with a start yesterday morning because the air conditioning in my bedroom suddenly clicked off. There are two reasons I panic when that happens - firstly, because it’s a bit of a PTSD-lite trigger, as I was once in a landslide in the middle of the night that was signalled by the power going out. And secondly because I’m the angriest person in the world if I sleep in the heat. Honestly, a sleep-deprived me is nicer than an over-heated me. Which should give you some indication as to how mean I get without climate control. In the end it turned out that I had accidentally set the shut off timer by mistake, groping around for the controller in the dark.So i turned it on and went back to sleep.Given the quality of that anecdote, I’m guessing that you’re still sleep-deprived?Maybe. Or maybe I’m swallowing the meanness. I wouldn’t suggest that you drink any of the liquids at your desk, however. The anecdote that thrilled you so was to illustrate our addiction to and dependence on a/c.

It couldn’t last. The pull of the dark is simply too strong for Matt Armitage to bear. Today we look at some breakthroughs in technology and ask: was that a good idea? Are you in the driving seat today?Nicely lined up for me!Because I want to talk about flying cars. Which are once again in the news because one of Malaysia’s Ministers has been talking about the country becoming an early adopter of airborne car traffic. After talking about a local company with a flying vehicle prototype under development in Japan. Except it’s not really a car, is it?No. From what I understand it’s based on drone technology. So I imagine it’s remote controlled or autonomous, whether or not it carries passengers.Which is why I wanted to talk about some of the terrible ideas we have that simply refuse to go away.Flying cars has been a sci-fi dream for at least 50 years. We’re sending probes to Mars, but by and large, cars are still limited to roads. We’ve had plenty of flying cars over the years…I’m not even going to list them.Wikipedia is a great source of knowledge about the common sense breakdown that is flying cars. It’s full of the good, the bad and the ugly. Just without the good. We’ve been making flying cars since the 1960s.Roger Moore flew a car come plane in the Bond movie The Man With the Golden Gun in 1974.Which was built by AMC, a major automaker in the US at the time.Didn’t the Bond series have a submarine car, too?Yeah, a Lotus Turbo Esprit.Which I think could really dive under water.of course, there are plenty of car boat things as well. Cars that can float. Boats that can drive on land. Motoring shows love to do those stunts where they have to develop some kind of hybrid. But the ideas never take off?No. Even if the actual cars can.We have the technology to do this. We’re not being cheated out of a world of star Wars style Speeders because we’re waiting for technology to catch up.The technology is there. The problem is the idea itself. It’s not good. It’s like setting your feet on fire. You can do it. But you’d really be better off not.

Let The Knowledge soothe your troubles with edible algae, miracle magnets and a keto-based migraine cure. We're a little behind in posting episodes, so please enjoy the multiple feeds this week!Episode Sources:https://www.newscientist.com/article/2213394-ketogenic-diet-may-stop-migraines-by-changing-the-brains-fuel/ https://www.newscientist.com/article/2213755-cities-are-using-walls-of-moss-to-tackle-air-pollution-from-traffic/https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/aug/13/algae-spirulina-e3-blue-majik-health-benefits https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/aug/13/algae-spirulina-e3-blue-majik-health-benefits https://www.newscientist.com/article/2213622-tiny-magnets-could-help-rid-the-ocean-of-harmful-microplastics/https://www.newscientist.com/article/2213756-a-classic-quantum-theorem-may-prove-there-are-many-parallel-universes/ https://www.newscientist.com/article/2213655-having-kids-makes-you-happier-but-only-when-they-move-out/Unbelievably Matt is making good on his promise to show us that this world is a better place than our social media feeds might indicate. Today on MSP we have a lot of algae, some moss, quantum universes, children and magnets. Yes, it’s time to get your feelgood on.Where are we going today? Are you going to start us off with physics or food?I’ll go with a couple of food stories.Leave the stuff that’s mentally hard to swallow until later. We often hear about fad diets being the latest thing to help us lose weight and keep us in shape. And as we talked about a few shows ago, diets on their own often make very little difference to your weight over the long term because the body adjusts to the calories coming in and adjusts the way it burns and stores energy. But it turns out that the Ketogenic diet could be having unintended and quite profound health benefits for people with certain long term illnesses. For people that don’t know, the ketogenic diet essentially restricts carbs and calories and promotes a mixture of protein and fats to derive energy from.Yes, so it’s a bit like a more extreme version of the Atkins Diet that was popular a few years ago. You’ll find loads of keto influencers on social media and it seems to be wildly popular with a subsection of fitness freaks. What wasn’t perhaps anticipated was the effect it might have for migraine sufferers. And it’s something else that underscores, that despite all the advances, how poorly we understand the way our own bodies, especially our brains, work. Don’t tell me. You ran a little test?Haha. I left that question in from last week. And no, I didn’t.I know I have a slightly fast and loose reputation when it comes to experimenting with humans, but my line is drawn a long way before we get to chronic migraines. Besides, I signed a hypocritical oath statement at my online medical university. You mean hippocratic oath?It was one of those 90% off until midnight, no money-back type deals. So I think it really was a hypocritical oath. Can you really call yourself a doctor? On land, only in the Republic of Sealand. But once i’m in or over international waters, anything goes.

t's episode 78... Rebooted. This episode covers a lot of ground again, but on nothing in particular. I didn't like some of the things in the first iteration, so here is a refined version of episode 78. Some of the events are a week old now, but that rest time has provided new information and processing of information to happen. I think it's made this version better. Here are a few links to the topics covered so that you can have a look-see now that your interests have hopefully been re-piqued: There will def be flat track news. Not only a national AFT race report, but talk about some of the National Super Hooligan racing that is going down this year. There is a little isle of man news- revised. Bike maintenance requirements Don't forget the motorcycle podcaster's challenge There's a new segment called "SHOW" that was a recently introduced where I'll fill you in on what the other shows are doing so that you don't have to listen to them. It's VERY detailed... uhhh (and revised) There is some industry banter and yap about some models on the road now. In this episode of Thick & Thin, I share four of my newest reads, as well as the story of Martha Gellhorn. An author and war correspondent, Martha is largely known for her brief marriage to Ernest Hemingway, but is responsible for much greater things than just spending some time married to a now famous author. “Why should I be a footnote in someone else’s life?” She famously said in an interview. We give her story justice today in this episode of Thick & Thin. // Follow me on IG: instagram.com/katybellotte // EPISODE SOURCES: https://www.nytimes.com/1998/02/17/arts/martha-gellhorn-daring-writer-dies-at-89.html https://www.irishtimes.com/news/in-times-of-love-and-war-1.399784 https://www.cbc.ca/radio/day6/king-tides-impeach-o-meter-frosty-at-50-lindy-west-k-pop-deaths-and-mental-health-martha-gellhorn-more-1.5384775/the-only-woman-at-d-day-what-martha-gellhorn-s-letters-reveal-about-the-trailblazing-war-correspondent-1.5384779 https://www.townandcountrymag.com/society/tradition/a22109842/martha-gellhorn-career-ernest-hemingway/ Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/thick-and-thin/donations Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
