What do we do when we feel bombarded by the various needs and asks in our world? Is it exciting for us - or a pain, a drain, and a time to complain? Amidst all of the noise, might we pause a moment? Did we somewhere along the way miss that God created giving as a beautiful part of His Kingdom and a way for us to honor Him and impact lives forever? In this week’s podcast, Michael encourages us to take Kingdom giving back from an enemy who has always wanted to distort and undermine its beauty. God made giving beautiful and He intends for it to be exciting, fulfilling, fruit- bearing and yes, a total blast!

Recipes For Life with Pete Evans

Changing the world might be simpler than we think. Henna Maria is an activist, speaker, writer, and a practitioner of sacred healing arts, natural law and the Essene Way, and she believes we already have all the tools we need to turn fantasy into reality. We kick off the episode by exploring Henna’s journey as an activist, the causes she fights for and how she keeps her soul fueled. Together, we look at joy in its purest form, and how it can be used for the greater good.We talk about how Henna has been so effective as an activist, and how she spreads her message through a recipe of dialogue, inspiration and empowerment. As our conversation develops, we engage in the concept of free will, understand how global leaders are manipulating freedoms, and how we should be looking toward natural law for solutions to adversity. Amidst all the chaos though, Henna believes there are ways to improve our lives and the lives of those around us.Her formula is simple but requires discipline and belief, and today you’ll hear about how overcoming the fear of death is a liberating force which unlocks your potential to live a life of gratitude and reverence. Part of our quest as human beings is to maintain a balanced diet, nurture relationships and find spiritual fulfilment, all of which Henna has the roadmap to. We also delve into germ theory, make sense of the COVID-19 pandemic and come to grips with our inevitable relationship with viruses. In Today’s Suffering and Loss; Economic and Political Uncertainty; and Family Crises, We Know God Is With Us and He Will Never Leave Us MESSAGE SUMMARY: By accepting Jesus, you can be born of the Holy Spirit and have your sins forgiven by His sacrificial death on the cross. Paul explains, in Philippians 3:9b-12, that Jesus “has made me His own”: “but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead. Straining Toward the Goal. Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.”. Amidst suffering and loss; economic uncertainty; and family crises, you can still celebrate and rejoice because you know that God has given you life and life eternal. We know that God is with us and He will never leave us.   TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that because I am in Jesus Christ, I will seek God’s perspective on my situation.  For I know that in all things God  works together for good to those of us who love Him and are called according to His purpose. (From Romans 8:28). SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Philippians 3:7-12; John 5:24; Matthew 28:19-20; Psalms 78f:61-72. READ: James 5:11 NLT 'We give great honour to those who endure under suffering. For instance, you know about Job, a man of great endurance. You can see how the Lord was kind to him at the end, for the Lord is full of tenderness and mercy.' We don’t know exactly what James’ readers were facing but clearly it was tough to be a Christian. They needed to persevere. Amidst all the temptations, distractions and persecution that they were facing they needed to hang in there for God. Job is a classic illustration of this. Everything went catastrophically wrong for him. He lost his children, his possessions, and his health. He had the indignity of being struck with boils and his wife, seeing him sitting in the dust, scratching at his sores, exclaimed, “Do you still persist in your integrity? Curse God, and die” (2:9). But he didn’t. He put up not only with his suffering but also with his hopeless companions whose misguided thinking added another crushing layer to his agonies. However, he didn’t give up. He was confident of God and, in the end, God rewarded him generously. There are many times in life when God calls us simply to endure. We would love him to fix our situation, and remove all our problems. But he often calls on us to endure and promises to accompany us and strengthen us as we do so. William Carey was the father of the modern missionary movement and he went to India in 1793. During his time there he faced a succession of problems and set backs – but he kept going. He once said to his nephew, “If after my removal any one should think it worth his while to write my life, I will give you a criterion by which you may judge its correctness. If he gives me credit for being a plodder, he will describe me justly. Anything beyond this will be too much. I can plod. I can persevere in any definite pursuit. To this I owe everything.” Whatever you are facing today, God encourages you to keep plodding on. QUESTION: What have you learnt from those tough situations which you have had to endure? PRAYER: Thank you Lord that you will never leave or forsake me. Thank you that I can be sure that you will be right beside me whatever I have to face. Amen.

Amidst the influencers, cute animals, memes and other videos on Instagram lives a bizarre, dark and strangely legal underworld where people buy and sell human skulls, bones and body parts. Jordan Erica Webber and Joshua Rivera dig deep into this macabre marketplace where they meet with Henry Scragg, proprietor of curiositiesfromthe5thcorner, and actual buyer and seller of human skulls and other death-related oddities. They also learn that the trading of human bones is nothing new and actually dates back to about the 1800s. Writer Oscar Schwartz's article outlines the history of the troublesome practice as it was used in phrenology and other outdated sciences, and attributes it to cultural appropriation. And although Instagram is now the go-to to buying marketplace, it began on eBay and other sites in the early days of the internet, and is showing no signs of slowing. Oscar explains how this trading in body parts is a remnant of colonialists who exploited and even killed indigenous people, but Henry defends his business as embracing death as part of life, detailing how one can be a responsible and discerning skull-trader. So is the trading of human remains just another legitimate-albeit-unusual business, or is it perpetuating an outdated practice that exploits disenfranchised people and their culture? In this episode, things go completely off the rails. Meg invited two of her best friends to have an in-person interview, and a lot of hilarity ensued. Amidst the giggles, though, is some friendship analysis that everyone can probably relate to.

Your Faith Journey - Finding God Through Words, Song and Praise

I think I’ve shared before that during my first semester of seminary I had an introductory assignment where I openly stated that when I read the Bible my first assumption is that it will oppress me.  I’m thankful (and you probably are now too) that I’ve experienced much growth throughout the past three years and have come to reverse my expectation of scripture.  Today when I read the Bible my first assumption is that it will set me free!  I’ve come to recognize a narrative throughout scripture of God who is for people, especially those people who don’t seem like they’re winning.  I witness God who falls in love with humankind so completely that God never gives up on us, keeps choosing us, loving us, time and time again.  Because of this change in perspective I’m particularly challenged by encountering these readings today and they are forcing me to exercise the new muscles I’ve been building at Luther Seminary.  These readings are challenging me as I find myself wrestling with contradiction today, wondering which of my assumptions of the Bible is true as I struggle to hold on to my new understanding of the narrative of a loving God.  Overwhelmingly the lesson in Matthew’s gospel today has been preached as a renewal of Christian action and participation through responsible and obligatory use of the gifts we’ve been given by God.  I’m not on board.  Amidst this wrestling I admit that I’m weary of the meritocracy that is perpetuated by capitalistic societies like the Roman Empire and the United States of America.  I’m weary of the Pharaohs that insist that we “make more bricks” in servitude to the empire.  I’m weary of theologians who preach that we double down, work harder and give more in the name of God.  At the beginning of this chapter in Matthew, Jesus says “The kindom of heaven will be like this.” and then shares this parable.  I cannot accept that the kindom of God is like a ruthless and wealthy CEO with a golden parachute who requires his employees to play his game of monopoly.  In his game he takes all of their winnings and downsizes the company so that the remaining employees are “rewarded” with more work and participation in the joy of perpetuating his game of exploitation. No.  Not God. It’s important to recognize before I go any further that the “talent” spoken about in the gospel is not what we write about on our yearly stewardship forms about time, talent and treasure.  A “talent” was cold hard cash, actually an enormous amount of cash, you could say it was a life savings, worth more than fifteen years of wages!  The US Census bureau reports that the median household income in 2019 was around $68,000, so a modern-day talent would be over a million dollars.  Using today’s income data, the master in this story gives one slave $5 million dollars, another $2 million dollars, and another $1 million and went away… for a very long time.  Two of the slaves play the game, somehow managing to double these multiplied life savings and return $10 million dollars and $4 million dollars to the master.  I wonder how they did this?  There were no stock market investments or lottery pay-outs two thousand years ago where one had even the slim possibility of such an incredible return on investment.  I wonder, considering this astounding wealth-building, if the exploited had already become the exploiters when the master returned.  Anyway, the third guy, I’ll call him the million dollar servant, he didn’t increase the master’s wealth.  He buried it, and gave it right back when the master returned.  When he was questioned by the master on his apparent irresponsible handling of this money he says, “Master, I knew that you were a harsh man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed”... and the master became enraged.  “You knew, did you?!”  You knew that I was exploiting everyone I came across, you were onto my game?  Well if you knew how ruthless I am then you should have been at least wise enough to gain me some interest.  In effect, the million dollar servant was told to make more bricks, told he isn’t good enough, told he should have worked harder. Ending his fit of rage, the master orders the million dollar servant to be “thrown into outer darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth”.  This harsh message from Matthew is juxtaposed against Paul’s letter to Thessalonica, a capital city of a Roman province that was immersed in commercial prosperity and sure to be enmeshed in the ways of the Roman Empire.  Paul writes to a new Christian community, one that is facing opposition from both the Roman Empire and the local Jewish community.  Paul encourages them: “Let us put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.  For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live with him.”  This is the first written book of the new testament, the first words encouraging the first Christian community, and they do not instruct us to be more productive or to try harder.  They denounce a harsh and wrathful God.  They assure us of the free gift of God’s love and salvation, whether we’re awake or asleep, through Christ.  These words proclaim God’s love for these people who were not winning under the oppression of the Roman Empire and instruct them that no matter what... awake or asleep… God’s gift is theirs.  Reconsidering today’s gospel reading as I put on the breastplate of faith and love with a helmet of hope I begin to wonder: What was the million dollar servant doing for all of those years that his time was not justified through income?  I wonder: what if we lived like salvation really is not fused with status, power and work?  What if God is not the master in this story?  What if this master is of the empire, and not of God, as he insists that the million dollar servant did not work hard enough and threatens him into collusion with his evil ways?  What if the “wicked and lazy slave” is actually the hero of the story, actually the faithful servant of God, who resists the evil ways of the empire and buries his million dollars.  What if this faithful servant of God purposefully refuses to participate in systems of power with only one winner?  What if the empire becomes enraged by his resistance, realizes he knew all along about the unjust game and decides to shut him up.  The empire decides to not only shut him up but to also make him into a lesson for all others.  What if the empire makes a big show of this lesson and marches him through the city all the way to Golgotha, where he is crucified by the empire for the threat of his disobedience with weeping and gnashing of teeth?  What if the empire cannot silence the resistance of the million dollar servant because he is the Christ and Christ lives on within us...in you and me and all of us together?  What if we have the courage to become like this wicked and lazy slave, as we refuse to participate in the game of the empire and instead build the kindom of God?  Because in the kindom of God there’s no such thing as you’re not enough.  The kindom of God subverts the empire’s messages that you aren’t white enough, black enough, young enough, old enough, man enough, smart enough, fast enough, rich enough, legal enough… with you are enough, God’s beloved.  God calls you.  What if this lesson backfires on the empire and the people of Christ rise up, united in all of their diverse beauty, unafraid, wearing a fierce breastplate of faith and love with a helmet of hope?  This is the message of good news I hear today.  This is the work I invite you to participate in, wherever your feet meet the ground, rise up.  The empire is disguised as a desirable partnership, a joint venture where you are promised to enter into the joy of your master.  It is a lie.  We, the people of the resurrection, the people of Christ, must resist!  We step forward from today as we cling to our breastplate of faith and love, knowing we are protected and encouraged by our helmet of hope, and we walk together toward love, mercy and justice as heirs in Christ.  Amen.

Amidst all of the other news that came from the US election was the news that Oregon has become the first state in the US to legalise the use of magic mushrooms. While other states have decriminialised them, Oregon will become the first to permit supervised use in therapeutic settings for the treatment of a number of issues including depression. There are studies into the impact of taking psilocybin mushrooms taking place around the world, including here in Ireland, and to find out more about what's involved and the potential of the trials, Dermot and Dave spoke to John Kelly, clinical lecturer in psychiatry at Trinity College Dublin. Amidst the confusion and uncertainty, Ilze also found joy in creating and expressing herself. The podcast has a different structure, as it incorporates an interview I held with Ilze on my Instagram account. We spoke about the Planet Project - the community project I ran on the 22nd of April as a dedication towards our Planet. That project involved over 300 creatives, virtually holding hands around the Earth. We also discussed Ilze's new film, Tellus. Based on the Planet Project, with words from over 30 creatives, voices offered by the Planet Project participants and music by Vicky, this poetic film is a beautiful dedication to the Earth. Amidst this year’s bombardment of campaign ads and nonstop election news, it’s easy to forget that the ballot box is only one of many ways that people participate in politics and drive systemic change. Although often ignored by history books, which tend to focus on politicians, “bottom up” movements led by students, workers, and other “regular people” have been a major force in shaping the Bay Area. From criminal justice reform to LGBTQ equality, the changes happening now at the policy level emerged from years of organizing, and are built upon mountains of frustrating setbacks. At a time when the federal government is characterized by gridlock and dysfunction, looking back at the strength of local activism through the decades is a healthy reminder that much can be accomplished between elections, far from the halls of power. If you’ve been staring into the soul-sucking abyss of cable news or doomscrolling through the implosion of American democracy, delving into the stories of anti-eviction battles, Ohlone resistance, strikes, and resilient celebration featured in “A People’s Guide to the San Francisco Bay Area” (UC Press) will provide a welcome glimmer of hope. Not naive optimism, but the kind of tempered determination that comes when you remember how bad things have been before – and how people successfully fought to keep them from getting worse. This might be hard to believe right now, but some things even got better. (Case in point: Many of the Bay Area’s most beautiful parks are located on the sites of former military installations.) Although formatted similarly to popular travel books, “A People’s Guide to the San Francisco Bay Area” does not include the region’s most obvious tourist destinations. Instead, it explores the landscape from a historical perspective, highlighting significant places associated with social conflict, ecological restoration, and radical activism. For those wishing to combine their education with a bit of exercise, it even includes a series of thematic tours organized by themes such as “Youth in Revolt” and “The Intertribal Bay.” This episode features interviews with co-author Rachel Brahinsky, an associate professor at the University of San Francisco, and Diana Negrín da Silva, who contributed many of the book’s East Bay entries and also teaches in the geography department of UC Berkeley. This is Coronavirus 411, the latest COVID-19 info and new hotspots… Just the facts… for October 27th, 2020. The American Academy of Pediatrics reports children account for 11% of all Covid-19 cases in the US, and that is a 14% increase over the past two weeks. About 792,188 children have been infected in the US as of October 22, with children representing between 1 and 3.6% of total hospitalizations, depending on the state. The National Institutes of Health stopped a trial of Eli Lilly’s monoclonal antibody being tested in late stage hospitalized COVID patients, deciding it was unlikely to help. A similar trial in patients at an earlier stage of virus continues. Lilly says the drug’s not dangerous, just not effective in advanced patients. In many U.S. states, hospitalizations are on the rise. In Texas, some critical care patients at hospitals in El Paso are being airlifted to other medical facilities to cope with hospital capacity. Wisconsin hospital beds are at 82% capacity. Utah, a record number of patients in ICU, with 111 of 314 COVID-19 patients in intensive care. North Dakota has around 14% of bed capacity left available. Tennessee has 18% left. And in Wyoming, COVID hospitalizations peaked Sunday at 104. If you’re counting on contact tracing to help with the pandemic, maybe don’t. In New Jersey, 58% of people called refuse to cooperate with contact tracers who reach out to them. Amidst the coronavirus pandemic, world scientists are asking, where did the flu go? Data collected by the World Health Organization in the Southern Hemisphere, where the flu season happens earlier, shows that in Australia, cases dropped 96%. In South Africa, there were only two cases, then none. Globally, it’s estimated rates of flu may have plunged 98% this year. There are several theories as to why but no one fully embraced answer. The top 10 counties with the highest number of recent cases per capita according to The New York Times: Norton, KS. Bon Homme, SD. Elliott, KY. Okfuskee, OK. Faulk, SD. Kusilvak Census Area, AK. The five states with the most daily new cases per capita over 7 days are North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Montana, and Idaho. The retransmission rate is currently highest in Rhode Island, Vermont, Wyoming, New Jersey, and Colorado. There is now only one state with a retransmission rate below 1 and that is Mississippi.   I am your host, Navy Reserve Cmdr. Lesley Lykins. I launched "When Sacrifice Calls" a year ago to share the stories of America's Military Reservists and National Guardsmen. Amidst the craziness of 2020, I am so honored to launch Season 2 of the podcast. In this episode of the show, I personally kick off the season with what sacrifice means to me.  Between virtual school, full-time work at a hospital, MBA classes, and a very ill child, the stress has continued to build. But, I know I'm not alone in this.  How do we continue on while we feel like we are sinking on a daily basis? In the end, we rely on each other, and the sacrifices we are willing to make.

This week Nina and Dan have a lively conversation with Dawson White about what brought each of them to Houston and how they got hooked on Houston life. They discuss everything from moving to Houston in the heat of summer for school, jobs, and family, to the excellent local music scene, music education, band camp, aggressive networking, cokes, and buggies (i.e. shopping carts). Amidst lighthearted banter, they also discuss self reflection, taking breaks, being productive, going back to school, innovation, and creativity during pandemic life. Links and References:Aperio: https://www.aperioamericas.org/#live-from-miller-homeDoing Everything Aggressively: https://youtu.be/IFAs78J3DpoThe Fault Line “Hill”: The Long Point-Eureka Heights Fault Lines in Houston: https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2008-04/uoh-osg042408.phpThis Week's Guest:Dawson White: LinkedInYour Hosts:Nina - ninabknight - Facebook, Twitter, InstagramDan - dgkdesign - Facebook, Twitter, InstagramPivot Party Facebook PagePivot Party on TwitterPivot Party on the WebOur work on the web:designbyknight.netninabledsoeknight.com
