Cline (Author) https://www.amazon.ca/After-1177-B-C-Survival-Civilizations/dp/0691192138 At the end of the acclaimed history 1177 B.C., many of the Late Bronze Age civilizations of the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean lay in ruins, undone by invasion, revolt, natural disasters, famine, and the demise of international trade. An interconnected world that had boasted major empires and societies, relative peace, robust commerce, and monumental architecture was lost and the so-called First Dark Age had begun. Now, in After 1177 B.C., Eric Cline tells the compelling story of what happened next, over four centuries, across the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean world. It is a story of resilience, transformation, and success, as well as failures, in an age of chaos and reconfiguration. 1700 BABYLON

THIS WEEK! We take a look at the year civilization collapsed. Or did it? We begin with looking at our own times, and how close we are to a collapse in our current civilization to the world before 1177BC. But was it really an imidiate collapse? Or did it happen gradually over time? 7/8: After 1177 B.C.: The Survival of Civilizations by Eric H. 500 BCE

Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
In 1177 BC a series of very unfortunate events culminated in the collapse of numerous kingdoms centered upon the western Mediterranean. The nature of those events, and how one played upon the other, was the topic of our conversation with Eric Cline way back in Episode 62, when we talked about his book 1177 BC: The Year Civilization Collapsed. Now Eric Cline is back on the podcast to answer one of the great questions, “and then what happened?” That is also the task of his most recent book After 1177 BC: The Survival of Civilizations. We shall talk about those who survived, those who didn't, and why–and, for those of you who like rating Presidents and baseball players, we'll discuss the winners, the losers, and those who came out sort of even. Finally we'll even talk about whether there is ever such a thing as a "dark age". Eric H. Cline is professor of classics and anthropology at George Washington University. His most recent book is 1177 B.C.: A Graphic History of the Year Civilization Collapsed. For Further Investigation The website of Erich H. Cline We have talked about calamity, disaster, and disruption several times in past episodes. See conversations with Ed Watts, first on the fall of the Roman Republic in Episode 93; and then again on the "eternal fall" of Rome, in Episode 219. In Episode 224 I talked with David Potter about historical disruption, that moment when it feels as if a civilization is going over a waterfall.

For thousands of years the events around this period have remained somewhat mysterious. We would hear echoes of this period in the myths and poems told by the Greeks, as well as accounts in biblical texts. With the onset of archaeological discoveries in the 19th century of our time some of the mystery began to be lifted, seeing these tales having some historical context to them. As the discipline of Archaeology developed more evidence of the late Bronze Age has come to light, helping historians paint more credible theories. In this episode I talk to Prof. Eric Cline about the discipline of archaeology and his book 1177 BC where he talks about the late Bronze Age world and the Collapse it would suffer. He details the various evidence that has shown itself in the historical record to help us understand what was happing during this world changing period of time. Eric H. In this episode we dive into the history of Megiddo which is a site that has seen the rise and fall of at least twenty cities. From the Neolithic to its final decline and depopulation we explore the history, archaeological discoveries and conflicts that have taken place there. We watch as Dr. Cline guides us through the clenched hands that have pushed and pulled for control of this location from the Canaanites to the Egyptians, from the Israelite's to the Greeks and the Romans and even into the modern world as the British and Ottoman Empire fought to control it. This site and its strategic placement has seen the rise and fall of Empires throughout history and it truly has been "Armageddon" for so many peoples. And as we stand on this Armageddon this valley of birth and death of so many empirical entities, we have to ask ourselves what are we standing on? And are the Battles for Megiddo truly over? An internationally renowned archaeologist with more than thirty seasons of excavation experience, Prof. Eric H. Cline has conducted fieldwork from Greece and Crete to Egypt, Israel, and Jordan. Drawing on his forthcoming book, Digging Deeper, Cline will answer questions that archaeologists are most frequently asked: How do you know where to dig? How are excavations actually done? How do you know how old something is? This session will be filled with insights and practical advice about how archaeology really works. The webinar will begin with a short introduction and then will be opened up to the audience for a live Q&A session with Prof. Cline. Dr. Eric H. Cline is Professor of Classics and Anthropology, former Chair of the Department of Classical and Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, and current Director of the Capitol Archaeological Institute at The George Washington University (GWU), in Washington DC. He is an active field archaeologist, with more than 30 seasons of excavation and survey experience in Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Cyprus, Greece, Crete, and the United States. He is a former co-director at Megiddo (biblical Armageddon), where he dug from 1994 through 2014, and is currently co-directing the excavations at Tel Kabri in northern Israel, site of a 4,000-year-old Canaanite palace, where they have discovered the remains of the oldest and largest wine cellar so far known from the ancient Near East.
The problem with Roman Catholicism is that it is insufficiently catholic. The problem with Protestantism, including confessional Reformed Christianity, is that it too is often insufficiently catholic. Roman Catholicism is insufficiently catholic because, by definition, it has no real place for the global church of every age. This includes the patristic and Late Antique era, not only the churches after the Reformation. Rome has quietly set the Western terms for what counts as theology, holy philosophy, and the tradition, and we too often blindly follow their lead. We know Augustine, Anselm, and Aquinas, and we tend to think this is the history of Christian theology when it really is the history of Western theology. We don’t know Ephraim, the Didascalia, or the origins of Islam as they took form within the Church rather than outside of it.This is the key reason why at Greystone we read far more widely and deeply than our favorite theologians and events; why we include and strongly encourage our courses in Christian Syriac and other languages; and why we are committed, in the context of a hearty and confessional Reformed Christianity, to a substantial and working catholicity. These are just a few things that you’ll learn from Dr. Mark Graham’s Greystone course module on Christianity in Late Antiquity. For today’s Greystone Conversations episode, we are pleased to introduce this fascinating course of lectures. In what follows, you’ll be able to listen in on Dr. Graham’s introductory lectures for this course.Dr. Graham’s course is one that may just provoke a revolution in our thinking about the Church, and what ought to be the rich density of the catholicity of the Reformed Faith. We encourage the listener to think deeply through these lectures, and to continue listening to them at Greystone Connect. Doing so, you may learn far more about your own family history as a Christian, and what you learn may reconfigure, in a lasting way, what you thought you already knew. Dr. Graham is a Greystone fellow in Christianity and Late Antiquity. An accomplished scholar and active churchman, Dr. Graham has taught in the History department at Grove City College since 2003, serving as full professor there since 2013. He is the author, with Eric H. Cline, of Ancient Empires: From Mesopotamia to the Rise of Islam (New York: Cambridge University Press, June 2011), and News and Frontier Consciousness in the Late Roman Empire (Ann Arbor: University of Michigan Press, 2006).Dr. Graham’s Greystone course on Christianity in Late Antiquity is available this fall for credit or to audit, and his multiple lectures on this topic are available now for all Greystone Members. One of the reasons we wanted to start this podcast was to read and discuss Emily Wilson's new translation of The Odyssey, and now we have! It was amazing. While Odysseus schemes and Telemachus whines, The Odyssey's women finally get their due. We discuss Homer, Ancient Greek archeology, and Zeus the fangirl! (P.S. I know the audio quality isn't great, but we will be upgrading our audio equipment soon, and eps 7 and beyond will be better.) Recommendations: The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood The movie O! Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
Preppers, survivalists, safe rooms, gold in the backyard...Lots of people seem to be worried about the collapse of society and civilization, whether because of Financial Crisis 2.0, the arrival of aliens or asteroids, or the eclipse of all values. But chances are that few of us have experienced the collapse of a civilization, and that the real thing is far more frightening than we actually imagine. Our guest today, Eric H. Cline, helps us understand what such a catastrophe means in his acclaimed book 1177 BC: The Year Civilization Collapsed (Princeton University Press, 2014). As Cline makes clear, it takes more than one calamity to ruin a civilization. And the Bronze Age ended in a whirl of calamities–droughts, famines, earthquakes, wars, invasions, and governmental collapse. All were a long chain of disasters so heavy that they dragged down an entire civilization. That is, everything familiar soon became strange and distant to those living in a subsequent "dark age," a dark age more catastrophic and grim than even that period that followed the collapse of the Western Roman Empire. Eric H. Cline is Professor of Classics and Anthropology, and Director of the Capitol Archaeological Institute at George Washington University. He has been an active field archaeologist for over thirty years, recently retiring as co-director of the Megiddo Expedition. The author of numerous books and articles, I'm very pleased to welcome him to Historically Thinking. As always, we hope you enjoy the conversation, and we invite you to leave a comment or a review on iTunes and let us know how we're doing. Available again as a 2nd edition hardback, and soon in the 10th edition paperback with a new Afterword by the author, Eric H. Cline‘s 1177 B.C.: The Year Civilization Collapsed (Princeton University Press, 2015) is THE must have, must read book of 2014, and 2015. Why? Because it’s serious archaeology, history and anthropology, but it reads like a mystery novel. The prose is superb; so good that it’s hard to put down. Homer wrote about the Age of Olympians: Zeus and Apollo, Odysseus, Achilles and Hector. Cline writes about the Minoans and Mycenaeans, the Trojans and the Egyptians, Hittites and Babylonians. And both epics, one mythology and one history, are about the same extraordinary time. Cline recreates the late Bronze Age in fascinating detail and then describes its utter and complete destruction. City after city, empire after empire, civilization after civilization: annihilated to extinction, one right after another, and in a shockingly short amount of time. What caused a catastrophe so extreme that the First Dark Age descended over the world: a mysterious invading culture–the Sea People, plague and pestilence, earthquake, climate change, all of the above? 1177 B.C.: The Year Civilization Collapsed discusses each possibility in turn. A great interview with a world-class researcher–it easily could have gone for three-hours. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
