Listen in this episode of DC Power Hour as our battery Blarney duo of George and Allen welcome George Turner, another industry veteran who recently joined Eagle Eye as an advisor/EEU instructor. They discuss and recollect the evolution of batteries over the span of their careers.Episode Highlights:0:59 – I (George Turner) started in the battery industry in 1985 with Johnson controls and at that time they they manufactured flooded batteries.4:28 – It was pretty rapid change for a stoic industry like ours. There were a couple of drivers, I think that one was the development of control ferro rectifiers, which were replacing the the SCR.9:07 – There's another concern we had as well. That was the regulation and filtering had to be much better, but it didn't have that great big capacitor sitting at the end of the rectifier, acting basically as a battery eliminator.17:13 – One of the shortfalls of AGM is that there's not good contact between the electrolyte and the case. So it causes problems with heat dissipation, but with the gelled AGM the gel was in contact with the case and made for greater heat dissipation.49:31 – So the battery evolution over the last 50 years has improved dramatically. Quality levels are much better than what they were. Valve regulated is the way of the future, but there will always be a flooded battery systems as well.

VK4HGT was a well-respected member of the Club who had joined BDARS in the early years of the Clubs formation, having started his interest in the hobby with Citizen Band Radio back in its Hay Days, George was a somewhat late starter into Amateur Radio having only gained his Foundation License at the age of 74 and upgrading to Standard Level at the age of 91. That alone could show you how tough and determined George was. To say George had led an interesting life would be an understatement to say the least. At 101, George Turner was one of the only surviving veterans of the 39th battalion that served in the Kokoda campaign in Papua New Guinea, having recently attended a ceremony on the Gold Coast, marking 80 years since the Kokoda campaign. At the recent Kokoda ceremony, George stated; "I was only about 20 when I was up there. I got to 101 — lucky wasn't I" "I was a truck driver … one of two truck drivers … the other one was sergeant by rank. He got killed in the first bombing raid. He was sleeping beside me at the time, about six feet away."* George was very generous with his time, always willing to help with Club activities back in those early years. He was a friendly and a likeable bloke as well. For many years he was the voice behind the microphone on the HF Traveler's Net across Australia. Operating Daily with other relays to ensure the safety of other Amateurs travelling around Australia and being there to provide support should it be required. He was still doing this at the age of 101 until very recently. George was also active on the 2 meter band via the local repeater and could be often heard talking with his friends and his son who is also a local Amateur Operator. George would often be seen riding his scooter to the local Coffee shop for his daily outing. George was still very much independent, still living on his own and enjoying life and his radio. George will be greatly missed. Vale George Turner - VK4HGT ---------------------------------------------------------------------* Hello, I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I've been thinking. A big shout out to the various people who are posting to websites and social media accounts with content showing all sorts of club activities. I wonder if you have a few minutes more in your week so that you could put a small segment together for the state news bulletin? Often what I see is written in a way that you can record the audio directly to your phone and the text just has to be copied into an email. The reason that I mention this again is that there are listeners to the news broadcasts and we don't get to see them reflected in the call back numbers. Then there are the people on their own who don't belong to clubs or who are unable to attend meetings and they like to know of what is going on around the ridges. There are lots of things happening but we aren't getting to learn about them perhaps until they have concluded with the bi-monthly publishing schedule of Amateur Radio magazine. A spot on the news broadcast tells every listener how vibrant this activity really is. Our News Editor, Graham, VK4-Baker-Baker will be only too pleased to receive your segments and if they can become regular so much better. Check the details for lodging material on the WIA web site and the end of each bulletin or email qnews@wia.org.au One of the stories of the past week has been the release by the ACMA of its prospective work schedule for the next 5 years. The obvious areas of interest for us are the transitional changes from spectrum to class licensing. We have already had some previous notices from the regulator of the way it views the changes for the Amateur Service and we should see the culmination of the regulatory framework in the coming months. The other area of importance is the preparatory work for the next World Radio Conference. This is really the Olympic Games of the regulatory system with contingents from around the world and most countries attending. The idea is to reach an agreement on standards and spectrum usage so that harmful interference is minimised to users in adjacent areas. It has been the position that Australia has been able to have amateur radio operators attending as part of the official contingent at these conferences. It has also been the responsibility of the amateur community to fund the expenses of those delegates. This is something to be kept in mind for the future. Maybe there is an opportunity for clubs to use the locally sponsored sausage sizzles to raise funds to ensure our voice is heard in Geneva at the next WRC. I can remember listening to calls for donations from individuals during state news broadcasts from long ago. More recently I can recall requests for support in the printed material arriving in the letter box. Perhaps now is the time to think of funding our delegates as a way of ensuring the growth and participation of our hobby here and worldwide. I'm Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that's what I think....how about you? ---------------------------------------------------------------------* 2022 Social Scene VK4 - Sunfest Sunday 18 September 10:00 AM Mountain Creek State School (noreply email) VK4 - GOLD COAST HAMFEST Nov 13. @ Country Paradise Parklands TO SUPPLY QNEWS ITEMS:- Send SCRIPT to qnews@wia.org.au send audio to http://www.wia.org.au/members/broadcast/upload/ QNEWS Tips to get MORE out of your weekly newscast on VK4WIA If you would like to submit club news items for inclusion in QNEWS broadcasts, please email your item in text to:- qnews@wia.org.au THEN submit audio:- To submit audio email qnews@wia.org.au and ask for the current password then read "how to submit items" in the weekly news page on http://www.wia.org.au/members/broadcast/contribute/ Remember the sooner you submit audio material the more the likelihood of it being broadcast in the very next edition QNEWS. Brand New Episode out now Skies Turn Black The silence single review out now   SKIES TURN BLACK Are Jamie Jordan - Vocals, Guitars George Turner - Guitars, Vocals Xander Isles - Keys, Vocals Daniel Woodhead - Bass Rob Halliday - Drums, Vocals ACCLAIMED METALLERS RETURN WITH STUNNING NEW SINGLE & VIDEO! Expressing a sound that draws from contemporary titans such as Avenged Sevenfold and Trivium, but also firmly nods to classic British Heavy Metal, SKIES TURN BLACK unleash monster choruses and ferocious dual guitar melodies to devasting effect. To date, the northern riff merchants have earned much critical acclaim, and it's easy to see why. Loaded with their all-consuming new single, The Silence, out now, the distinct metallers are set to stake their claim. Watch the video for the track, here – check out the Sielence  https://youtu.be/hNqpyvZIdfQ  Featuring axemen Jamie Jordan and George Turner, the band were born while they were studying music at Huddersfield University, where the guitar duo met bassist Danny Woodhead. After a slew of successful UK tours, the band dropped their self-titled debut EP, before taking a hiatus from regular gigging to work on their first full length album, No Place Like Home. SKIES TURN BLACK's debut album, No Place Like Home, landed in the Autumn of 2018, racking up glowing worldwide reviews, and was subsequently praised by Metal Hammer as having “some of 2018's best guitar work”. Jordan's vocal work was also revered with diverse and favourable comparisons spanning from Axl Rose to Sebastian Bach. After the release of No Place Like Home, the band regrouped, recruiting two new members: stickman Rob Halliday, who's water-tight drumming has added heightened groove to their rhythm section, and piano/keytarist Xander Isles, who allows the band to utilise more of their signature, classically influenced sound, especially in a live setting. Forging ahead with plans for a sophomore album, the band are also set to reveal a stunning new single, The Silence, which perfectly showcases their growing aptitude for delivering a bold metal cut laced with contrasting nuances and captivating themes. Sies Turn Black links https://www.facebook.com/SkiesTurnBlack/ https://open.spotify.com/artist/4sCElMDKCwtdjhP4Ib4gC3?si=0GEYJaV-SKuqcLGPEHlAzA   I did kind of of feel with this track for the first part anyways I was left in limbo not sure really what the end goal was however I'm all. For bands trying different things and sounds. I love the intro reminded me of an old school Avenged sevenfold vibe from their 2005 album city of evil. Towards the end of the track is when I felt it really comes into its own with some awesome solos and a changed in pace     You can find this episode and previous episode in the below links Spotfiy https://open.spotify.com/show/6Jj9SsrXxve44839dptihN… Apple https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/setting-the-tone/id1499390718 Google https://podcasts.google.com/?q=setting%20the%20tone podbean https://Settingthetone2.podbean.com

At some point, he highlighted techniques to get kids into tele, drawing from his own experience when teaching the turn to his two boys, Lenny and Albert. George sent us some photos of his kids absolutely slaying, so we thought it would be a great opportunity to interview one or both of them and find out why they like tele so much. We ended up getting Lenny (13 years old) on for a chat and we were blown away by the enthusiasm and wisdom he presented to us. We give you Lenny Turner, the future of telemark skiing in Australia.

Descriptors such as jungle music, negro music, jazz...African American Classical Music. Black Classical Music. Spirit Music...and African Rhythms...have been attached to the vibrational human expressions, that once organized into various rhythms, notes, and harmonies become what we have come to call—music. The deep structures that organize these vibrations have purpose. They have origin. They have life. They represent life. They aide us through life. They are bridges between and expressions of worlds seen and worlds unseen. They are all around us. Exploring the form and functions of African rhythms and all that they contribute to our world are part and parcel of understanding the interconnections between the material and nonmaterial, and how they inform each other. This past April 2019, at the Association for the Study of Classical African Civilization's (ASCAC) meeting held at Medgar Evers College in New York, a discussion titled African Rhythms: A Workshop on Cultural Continuity and the Future of Jazz, was developed to explore what was laid out above. Who you will hear next in order of speaker, the wide-ranging discussion from this meeting: George Turner is a longtime activist from Brooklyn, NY and currently serves on the Board of ASCAC.
