Recently, someone on Twitter asked if sensitivity readers are still a resource writers utilize and where to find them. Yes indeed, sensitivity readers are still a great resource, and since we interviewed Jordan Shapiro and a sensitivity reader he worked with on his book, Father Figure: How to Be a Feminist Dad. I hope you enjoy this re-airing of episode 266 the #AmWriting podcast. Hey all, Jess here. When I agreed to read and blurb Jordan Shapiro's new book, Father Figure: How to Be a Feminist Dad, I was struck by the attention he paid to inclusivity and the language he used to describe it. When I mentioned it to him, he told me he'd used a sensitivity reader named Jazz to ensure he got the language right.Sensitivity readers are becoming more of a norm in publishing. Jodi Picoult has tweeted about how much she depends on hers to get her descriptions, language, and representation right in her books articles like this one in the Guardian and this one in Vulture are great primers on the topic. We asked Jordan and Jazz to join us to talk about the experience of working together to create Father Figure.#AmReadingJazz: What's Your Pronoun?: Beyond He and She by Dennis BaronJordan: Interior Chinatown by Charles YuKlara and the Sun by Kazuo IshiguroKJ: Conjure Women by Afia AtakoraJess: Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia HibbertIf you love a good writing retreat—especially one that comes with good solid coaching and the chance to meet others who are working on similar projects—here's one to check out. Summary: Ah, the follies and joys of youth! If you've been with us since the start, you know that Holly and Devin love stories with octogenarian protagonists. This week we're mixing it up and focusing on 20-something people who are still figuring themselves out. Holly struggled to find a book in her wheelhouse for this theme, but is generally drawn to young protagonists in thrillers because the silly mistakes they make to get murdered seem more plausible. Devin struggles to find books that *don't* focus on 20-somethings, since the romance genre has a long history of focusing solely on young people. Overall, though, they always have a blast following young protagonists through thorny plots and tough growth, and today's episode is no exception! Topics Discussed: The Dagger (3:04): Holly discussed The Secret History by Donna Tartt, a novel following 6 friends at an elite Vermont college who, through their own hubris, are sucked into a dark tangled web heavily featuring Greek Classics. As an inverted detective story, we quickly learn that the group is responsible for the murder of one of their own, Edward “Bunny” Corcoran, whose body is found days after his disappearance at the bottom of a ravine. Her key takeaways were: Tartt captured the 20-something experience by delving into themes that resonate with that time in life. Holly was especially impacted by the dangers of isolation, superficiality, and the weight of keeping secrets for the group of 6 young students. While initially fearful of reading this book because it might be too pretentious for her taste, Holly enjoyed it thoroughly after 8 years on her TBR shelf. The writing is incredibly strong and Holly was ultimately drawn to the group of friends and Tartt's phenomenal character development This book popularized the dark academia / campus novel subgenre when it was published in 1992; Holly especially appreciated the chill fall moods and dusty college setting that added to the sense of isolation and doom for the plot. The Heart (20:21): Devin discussed Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert, Book 3 in the Brown Sisters series that follows Eve Brown, the youngest sibling and a 26 year old self-described mess. When Eve fails at yet another job, a fight with her parents sends her driving nowhere just to escape; 45 minutes later she stops for a snack at a bed and breakfast that is in desperate need of a new cook. She interviews on the fly with the B&B owner, Jacob Wayne, but his stormy and abrasive attitude make her flee yet again - only to hit Jacob (by accident) with her car. If you haven't already, Devin *highly* recommends reading all 3 books in the Brown Sisters series! You can check out all the offerings at Talia Hibbert's website here; they are diverse, sexy, well-written plots with characters you'll love! Both Eve and Jacob are on the autism spectrum and their mutual support, communication, and clarification of their needs throughout the book not only makes their enemies to friends to lovers journey something to root for, but the intimacy and sexual connection between them much more profound. As a coming of age romance, Eve is the sunshine, singsong friend and Jacob is the gray, stormy, unyielding counter. Together, though, their witty banter evolves into growth for both - Jacob with his abandonment issues and Eve with her deel fear of failure. Hot On the Shelf (37:59): Devin: The Winners by Fredrik Backman Holly: Babel by R.F. Kuang What's Making Our Hearts Race (42:27): Devin: Cross-country skiing setup Holly: The Banshees of Inisherin Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

Summary: Grab your SPF 30 and watch out for rip currents, we're headed to the beach! Today, Holly and Devin bring books that take place at the beach and by the sea. The summer vibes are strong, and Holly and Devin find that they crave more whimsical, light versions of the books in their wheelhouses this time of year. They agree that beach-themed books across genres can flood the market and not all of them are gems. When done well, however, these books provide escapism and fun they both can't get enough of. Topics Discussed: The Dagger (4:06): Holly discussed Evil Under the Sun by Agatha Christie, a 1941 murder mystery novel that follows our favorite detective Hercule Poirot on what was meant to be a vacation and quickly turns into the murder investigation of the beautiful actress, Arlena Marshall. Her key takeaways were: The beach is central to the novel in both fun and important ways; Arlena is found strangled on the beach, and Poirot tracks the fun in the sun activities of all his suspects throughout the novel until we find our killer. As with Christie's other novels, this book is a product of the time in which it was written and some descriptions of characters or phrases contain the racism and xenophobia prevalent at the time, and unfortunately still prevalent in many arenas today. If you're looking for books with a similar structure but a more modern voice, Holly recommends: Sujata Massey's the Satapur Moonstone (from Ep. 6) Soji Shimada's Murder in the Crooked House Shamini Flint's Inspector Singh Investigates Series Christopher Huang's A Gentleman's Murder Christie's books are hinged on small details - objects, things that go missing or suddenly reappear, timing, etc. and the puzzle of it all is Holly's favorite part; you know that by the end you will have found the killer, and the rest of the time is fun in the sun following Poirot as he hunts. The Heart (19:03): Devin discussed The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune, a novel following boring, solitary Linus Baker from his desk job for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth (DICOMY) to a magical orphanage on an island in which 6 magical children reside with their caretaker, the charming Arthur Parnassus. Her key takeaways were: The beach and ocean in this novel play myriad roles, but the clearest comes in the contracts between Linus' life before (very black and white) and his life when he arrives on the island (high saturation, vibrant color). It serves to separate the orphanage from the mainland, but also brings comfort, power, and happiness to all the characters. The quirky and fascinating cast of characters (including the Antichrist and a were-Pomeranian) teach Linus (and therefore the reader) about passion, authenticity, love, and finding your own super power. Linus is the only non-magical person on the island, and his evolution shows us that kindness is magical too. Klune, in an interview, stated that this novel was inspired in part by The Sixties Scoop - the mass removal of Aboriginal children from their families to the child welfare system, in most cases without consent, throughout the 1960s in Canada. This caused a fair bit of controversy, and readers can choose to engage with the book or not at their discretion. However, we encourage respect for T.J. Klune himself and remind everyone that inspiration can come from anywhere - it doesn't mean the work itself is valueless. Hot On the Shelf (37:17): Holly: The Last Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine Devin: Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert What's Making Our Hearts Race (41:20): Holly: Season 4 of Stranger Things on Netflix Devin: Heartstopper on Netflix Graphic Novel Series: Heartstopper by Alice Oseman Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

This book somehow managed to be overwhelming sweet, incredibly hot, and slightly enraging (in a good way). We hope you enjoy as much as we did! Brazen banter: Wedding doves are homing pigeons! Our guest this week, Mazey Eddings, started out as a massive romance reader. In fact during her most stressful times of life, she would read upwards of a book a day, drawn to that guaranteed happy ending that all romance novels require. But, as someone who has an anxiety disorder, ADHD, and is on the autism spectrum, she felt like she didn't see the issues that she deals with on a day to day basis portrayed in the books she was reading. So in the middle of dental school she started writing scenes that later became her debut novel. Mazey's first book A BRUSH WITH LOVE hit bookstores at the beginning of March and features two dental students as they fall in love and deal with very adult struggles like extreme anxiety and familial guilt. Mazey also has 4 additional books in the pipeline over the next 3 years that feature other neurodivergent characters. We talk about why romance is the perfect genre to explore happy endings for underrepresented groups, the amount of misogyny still found in historically male dominated fields, and about the trend of women in STEM within the romance genre that appears to be here to stay. You can find Mazey Eddings on instagram at @mazeyeddings and at her author website, mazeyeddings.com Follow us on Facebook at The Perks of Being a Book Lover Instagram at @perksofbeingabookoverpod For show notes for any episode, go to our website at www.perksofbeingabooklover.com. Today's episode is going to serve as our Valentine's Day episode – and what better way to celebrate than by reading steamy romances with your galentines! The books of the moment for today's episode are Get a Life, Chloe Brown, Take a Hint, Dani Brown, and Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert. Just a forewarning for those of you listening, this is NOT a spoiler-free zone. We will be discussing these books in all of their glory, which of course includes revealing the ending. Talia Hibbert is a British romance novelist. She writes contemporary and paranormal romance. Critics describe her as a writer of diverse narratives, with characters of varying race, ethnicity, body shape, sexual orientation, and life experience. For this week's episode, we are joined by the one and only Sarah Thompson. If you missed her last time, Sarah is a 25 year old hopeless romantic with a contemporary romance obsession. She started her booktok journey in spring 2020 and has seen massive success with her book reviews and book related posts. If it has a cute cartoon cover on it and a promise of a happily ever after, she's going to read it. If you enjoyed this episode, I encourage you to leave a review on whichever platform you are listening on, if applicable. This week we finish up our discussion of The Path of Daggers by talking about the women in the book. Let's just say we are on a path of confusion with how we feel about the women thus far. We discuss the failings of POV during times and how better context could have made a certain character better. But before we get there, Laura shares how she distresses Hannah with her free-wheeling "style" and Hannah questions what OWWR "brand" is. Laura reveals her love for pretty much all of Kristin Hannah's books and a newfound love in Call the Midwife. Hannah recommends an amazing, heartbreaking read and also thinks she should stop watching One Tree Hill. It's time to stop.Media Mentions:The Wheel of Time series by Robert JordanAct Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia HibbertMonstress Vol. 6 by Marjorie Liu and Sana TakedaVei Vol. 1 by Sara B. This week we talked about the boys in Robert Jordan's The Path of Daggers, but we didn't have a ton to say about the boys, so we talked about Elayne, too. Laura shares her latest binges and wishes more authors would incorporate playlists into their books. Hannah has been taking it easy, but talks about a romp of a book she recently read and reflects on studying during Law School. Then Laura quizzes Hannah about her recent library HAUL, and we both gush over libraries and The Umbrella Academy.PS: GO CHECK OUT HANNAH'S YOUTUBE DEBUT ON LITERATURE & LOFIMedia Mentions:The Wheel of Time series by Robert JordanAct Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia HibbertYou---NetflixYou by Caroline Kepnes and narrated by Santino FontanaCrazy Ex-Girlfriend---NetflixFrozen---Disney+Beach Read by Emily HenryThe Godfather by Mario PuzoLaw & Order---PeacockGideon the Ninth by Tamsyn MuirThe Mountains Sing by Nguyen Phan Que MaiFlowers for the Sea by Zin E. Are you on TikTok? It's filled with many different communities, but today we're focusing on one that really affects us - and you guessed it, that's BookTok. Who knew the book world would infiltrate the TikTok social media app, but it's a community that fiercely believes in and defends reading. We love it! It's introduced us to so many books and authors we wouldn't have found otherwise, and it allows us to connect with others who love reading just as much as we do. In this (very belated) episode, I'm joined by the brilliant New York Times bestselling author of steamy, diverse romance, Talia Hibbert. Her latest book is "Act Your Age, Eve Brown", an autistic romance, and her first book "Get a Life, Chloe Brown" features a protagonist living with Fibromyalgia. Talia says she "lives in a bedroom full of books. Supposedly, there is a world beyond that room, but she has yet to drum up enough interest to investigate," and ooh is that relatable! We take a deep dive into how she became an author, the role her chronic illnesses play in how she works, what it's like writing characters inspired by your personal experiences, "incidental" diversity (inspired by Olivia Dade talking about incidental fat rep), and much more. Even if writing isn't something you're interested in as a career or hobby, we discuss many aspects of living and working with chronic illness that I'm sure will hit home for many! I really enjoyed this conversation, and I hope you do too! This episode couldn't have happened without the editing skills of Amit Rai, the transcription by Evangeline Talbot, and the art by Shona Sawhney. Hey all, Jess here. When I agreed to read and blurb Jordan Shapiro’s new book, Father Figure: How to Be a Feminist Dad, I was struck by the attention he paid to inclusivity and the language he used to describe it. When I mentioned it to him, he told me he’d used a sensitivity reader named Jazz to ensure he got the language right. Sensitivity readers are becoming more of a norm in publishing. Jodi Picoult has tweeted about how much she depends on hers to get her descriptions, language, and representation right in her books articles like this one in the Guardian and this one in Vulture are great primers on the topic. We asked Jordan and Jazz to join us to talk about the experience of working together to create Father Figure.#AmReadingJazz: What's Your Pronoun?: Beyond He and She by Dennis BaronJordan: Interior Chinatown by Charles YuKlara and the Sun by Kazuo IshiguroKJ: Conjure Women by Afia AtakoraJess: Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert As always we’re sponsored by Author Accelerator—THE place to find a book coach or become one! We love being edited. We love editors. But truth: sometimes being edited is hard. Sometimes you need to interpret things differently, ask questions or push back. In this episode, we talk about how to do that, what makes a good editor and how to find one, how to be edited in your freelance work and—my favorite—why you can’t say your editor is wrong. #AmReadingJess: Turning Pointe: How a New Generation of Dancers Is Saving Ballet from Itself by Chloe AngyalPunch Me Up to the Gods by Brian Broome Sarina: Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia HibbertKJ: Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins ReidIf you reply to this email I’ll tell you what book Jess didn’t like :). Thinking about hiring an editor—aka a book coach? I’ve worked with two from Author Accelerator now (and I PAID THEM, it’s not a perk of being sponsored :)) and they were wonderful. As we say in the episode, the best editors represent your readers, and they know what those readers are here for and how you can give it to them. Author Accelerator book coaches are those editors. Pop Culture Siblings Gwen talked about actual celebrity siblings: The Hemsworths (we had to google Luke), Miley and Noa Cyrus, William and Harry (we digressed quite a bit about the public persona of the Royals and what that meant to us growing up), The Jonas Brothers, Hanson, and other family bands. Danielle looked at sibling trilogies or series in books: Talia Hibbert's Brown Series, of course, but also Nora Roberts' Chesapeake Bay series (which has some found family elements! More on that later), Alexis Daria's new series has three cousins. In historicals, you have Julia Quinn's Bridgertons and Grace Burrowes's Windhams, which span generations. There's also an interesting element with found families, like in The Boyfriend Project by Farrah Rochon, the Sometimes in Love series by Melonie Johnson, and Annabeth Albert's #gaymers series. We also quickly talked about a few TV shows with great/interesting sibling relationships that are important to the storylines: Schitt's Creek, Black-ish, and This Is Us (though Danielle needs a break from the emotional manipulation of TIU!) * Recs from TALIA HIBBERT ACT YOUR AGE, EVE BROWN, the third book in the Brown Sisters series, is now available! Closing off the Brown Sisters series by Talia Hibbert is youngest (and flightiest) sister Eve's story in Act Your Age, Eve Brown. After being cut off by her parents, Eve runs away and crashes (literally) into Jacob Wayne's life becoming the chef at his B&B and maybe something more. I gush over my love of this book and the series as a whole, explain why this book was the most fun to read, and praise the representation in this romance novel.
