Blame the Wolf Moon. A vacationing wife. An acid flashback. Whatever. But when I blinked myself awake in the dark on Tuesday morning I had no idea where I was. If dementia runs in your family, as it does in mine, this can freak you right the hell out. But I found it oddly exhilarating. “Where am I? Who knows? Who cares? This is great!" And then I remembered. “Aw, shit. Trumpsylvania.” We're just a few all-too-short days away from the sequel to a movie I never wanted to see in the first place. "Mr. Hyde Goes to Washington" should've been a one-off. But nooooooo. Everything has to be a franchise now. When the Joker started getting top billing we should've known what was coming. It's just one evil clown after another. • Technical notes: RFD favors the Ethos mic from Earthworks Audio; Audio-Technica ATH-M50X headphones; Zoom H5 Handy Recorder; Apple's GarageBand, and Auphonic for a wash and brushup. The wolf howls from Freesound, as do the sad trombones and the vinyl scratching. "Morning Mood" is from "Peer Gynt" by Edvard Grieg. Arthur, King of the Britons, chatting with an anarcho-syndicalist peasant come from "Monty Python and The Holy Grail." You'll catch a snippet of the "Grapes of Wrath" theme in there too (almost went with "Death Valley Days."). The ass-kissing is by Your Humble Narrator. The sound effect, not the actual, y'know, like, obesiance. And the classic "There Stands the Glass" is courtesy of Ted Hawkins via YouTube. As usual, all the other raving can be pinned on the landlord of this dump.

In tegenstelling tot wat je zou denken, hoor je in de muziek de Sahara en niet de Noorse fjorden. En is Peer Gynt meer een egoïst dan een volksheld. Moeilijke woorden: Hardanger, pentatoniek. Bill Cushing enlisted in the Navy where he was assigned to electrician's school before joining the fleet. He returned to college later only to drop out. As a result, He spent about 16 years drifting between numerous jobs (bartender, cabbie, retail sales, truck driver) with the bulk of his work life continuing as a shipyard electrician—mostly on oil tankers. Then, a series of work-related accidents and the coaxing of a good friend convinced him to try completing his academic coursework one more time. He began at a community college in Jacksonville, Florida intending to major in history but met an English instructor who roped him back into his interest in writing, so by the time he entered the University of Central Florida, he focused on American and modern literature but also took enough creative writing classes to declare a double major in English. After moving to Puerto Rico with his wife (then girlfriend), he began work on his MFA at Goddard College in Vermont. He intended to write a novel based on the Norwegian folk tale of Peer Gynt using the backdrop of his years as a “yard bird,” but after only three months of marriage, his wife died, so he took a semester off, returning with an entirely new project in mind—the memoir of her, their relationship, and the effect that cancer had on them. Go check out his work on mywriter.net and his newest Non-Fiction book "Heroic Brothers of the Civil War."

Ferg explains the intricacies of working with the Scandinavian monopolies and explores the complex and serious wine culture to be found here. Who's ready to get this party startled?!  We love Halloween and jokes so much that we decided to throw together this bonus episode of just super fun Howl-o-ween dog jokes and some of our favorite regular Halloween jokes for spooky season. And, if you haven't yet, be sure to check out our super sweet "Howl-o-ween" special! It's a fun, exciting, and magical tale of tails- about a pair of young raccoon-type twin dogs living on Dogland. This story can be listened to without having listened to our serial episodes in Seasons 1 & 2. Although the story has some mild suspense and Halloween-adjacent fun, it is mostly fun and silly and meant to delight young listeners (age 4+) and old. It will lift your spirits and give 'em pumpkin to talk about! Special thanks to our creative partner Jason Roark who records, edits, and designs this show. This episode featured a bit of Jason's Howl-o-ween version of a family favorite song, In the Hall of Mountain King by Grieg, who hated the song and wrote it to be a parody of the music of the time that he disliked. We love all of Peer Gynt and encourage you to check it out! Synopsis The Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg was born in Bergen on today's date in 1843. He is credited with putting Norway on the map, musically speaking, drawing inspiration from the folk music of his native land. What you might not know is that two famous French composers were fans. Grieg was about 19 years older than Claude Debussy and about 32 years older than Maurice Ravel, but both knew and admired his music.Despite criticizing Grieg's Piano Concerto for being too much like Schumann's, Debussy included Grieg's Third Violin Sonata in one of his public recitals, praised Grieg's “Peer Gynt” incidental music, and described Grieg's songs as possessing “the icy coldness of the Nordic lakes [and] the intensive fire of the sudden Nordic spring.” Ravel once played some of Grieg's Norwegian dances for the composer in Paris, timidly at first, but when Grieg asked for a stronger beat, saying, “You should see our peasants with their fiddles stamping the rhythm with their feet. Start over!” Ravel complied, and the elder composer got up and started dancing. After Grieg's death Ravel said: “Next to Debussy there's no other composer to whom I feel more related than Grieg.” Music Played in Today's Program Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) Lyric Pieces Book VI, Op.57, No. 6.

Historiansplaining: A historian tells you why everything you know is wrong

They rained terror and destruction on Christian lands across Europe as far as Spain and Constantinople, before turning their attention away from raiding towards permanent settlement and the founding of new societies, from Ukraine to Normandy to Greenland. There has never been an explosion of exploration and aggression quite like the Viking expansion of the early Middle Ages -- we discuss the motives behind the expansion, which are rooted in the religious mismatch between Scandinavia and mainland Europe, the technologies that made it possible, the prizes and targets at which they aimed, the victories and setbacks that they encountered, the imprints that they left behind, and the winds of change that ultimately brought an end to the Viking adventure. We have all seen images of axe-wielding Vikings raining destruction upon the shores of medieval Europe -- but who were these berserking Norsemen and where did they come from? What society produced them? How did the Scandinavians of the Viking age understand the world and their place in it? We examine the Norsemen's complex and mysterious cosmos described in the poems and prophesies of the Eddas, and compare it to the realities of survival, trade, kingship, politics, warfare, art, gender, and the family in Scandinavia from the eight to eleventh centuries, as reconstructed from surviving documents and the latest archaeology. Thank you for tuning in to our spooktacular Howloween special! It's a fun, exciting, and magical tale of tails- about a pair of young raccoon-type twin dogs living on Dogland. Although the story has some mild suspense and Halloween-adjacent fun, it is mostly fun and silly and meant to delight young listeners (age 4+) and old. It will lift your spirits and give 'em pumpkin to talk about! We wrote the song that plays at the end of our episodes along with Hank's Granny, aka Jean Murphy! The song is called “Howl-o-ween!” We took story inspiration from A Tale for Halloween by Loretta Ellen Brady from the collection, The Green Forest Fairy Book (1920.) Special thanks to our creative partner Jason Roark who records, edits, and designs this show. He also provides original music including our opening theme song, which is sung & performed by him and the wonderful, talented Jen Bernard. This episode featured a bit of Jason's Howl-o-ween version of a family favorite song, In the Hall of Mountain King by Grieg, who hated the song and wrote it to be a parody of the music of the time that he disliked. We love all of Peer Gynt and encourage you to check it out! This episode's cover art is made by Hank using Canva!
