In 1971, Dr. Phil Zimbardo, a new professor at Stanford University, decided to do an experimental two-week study in which he put good people in bad places. This (now) infamous study is known globally as The Stanford Prison Project. “[We] walked them down to the basement where the prison was, and then stripped them naked and took off the blindfold. The first thing they see is themselves, we had a big mirror for this reason, and they see themselves standing helpless and naked. And [the ‘guards'] say: Welcome to Stanford Prison.” Volunteer students were assigned the role of either prisoner or guard - a role about which they knew nothing. In this episode:Mike and Ed discuss the X-Men's release of photos and power descriptions of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants (Magneto, Toad, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, and Mastermind). Why were these details released now? Was the motivation related to the recent anti-mutant feelings of the public? Or was it just about providing information so we can all protect ourselves? Also: Why were Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver meeting with the Fantastic Four?Behind the comic:From their first introduction, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch were presented as complicated and reluctant villains. Scarlet Witch believed that she owed a debt to Magneto, and Quicksilver's motivation was just to protect his sister. This was the first issue where that motivation is explored outside the X-Men series. The two villains attempt to give up their life of crime, but when they are attacked anyway by the Thing and the Human Torch, they abandon their plan and head back to Magneto. We are not aware if Stan Lee was already planning for the duo to switch sides and join the Avengers (less than 6 months away), but either way this is a nice example of long-term foreshadowing.In this issue:Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch decide to leave Magneto and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. They decide to meet with the Fantasic Four to see if they can advise them on how to make the transition to the side of the heroes. At the same time, the X-Men have released photos and details about the Brotherhood, including those of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. As a result, when the reluctant villains and aspiring heroes show up at the Fantasic Four's headquarters, the Thing and the Human Torch are already primed to think that they are there with ill intent. They battle and, at the end of it, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch decide to return to Magneto, feeling that they are safer with him.Assumed before the next episode:People are confused as to what Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are planning.This episode takes place:After Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch‘s near transition to the heroes' side. Drama van Nir Bergman over een Israëlische kunstenaar Aharon, die zijn carrière heeft opgegeven om fulltime te kunnen zorgen voor zijn zoon Uri, een twintiger met een autistische stoornis. Uri's moeder, Aharons ex, heeft echter wettelijk laten bepalen dat Uri begeleid moet gaan wonen. Om het afscheid te ontlopen besluit Aharon impulsief met Uri op reis te gaan. De prachtige muziek bij deze film is van de Italiaanse componist en musicus Matteo Curallo, die eerder al muziek voor theatervoorstellingen schreef, waarmee hij ook een aantal prijzen won; hij droeg ook nog bij aan de albums van verschillende andere Italiaanse artiesten, èn hij schreef de muziek voor commercials, onder andere voor Heineken. The human condition is bleak. Though many attempt to trumpet the inherent goodness of humanity, the reality of our own relationships, and of the relationships of communities, cities, states, and nations, proves quite the opposite. All of the evil things of the world have flowed out of the hearts of humans. Cleaning up the outside of lives makes us only hypocrites, still in bondage the base desires of our bodies. Jesus' Kiingdom is about God's rule within the lives of those who trust Him. God comes to reside within us. He has promised to give us new lives, eternal life, and new hearts. Hearts of flesh rather than hardened hearts of stone. We ought to continue to pursue Him, to trust Him. Keep on praying, saints! He is able to open deaf ears and make the truth plain.
