Episode Summary: In this episode of T.O.P. Journal Club, host Dr. Ashley Campbell orchestrates an engaging discussion with three distinguished oculoplastic surgeons from the United States. The session delves into probing analyses of two articles from the January/February edition of the Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery journal and one article from the November/December edition. These conversations unlock deeper understandings of vital topics in ophthalmology, ranging from infantile hemangioma treatment protocols to thyroid eye disease management. Key Takeaways: Oral propranolol might be beneficial for a broader range of infantile hemangiomas, considering it is well-tolerated with minimal side effects. Intraorbital injections combining 5-FU and steroids may offer improvement in diplopia associated with thyroid eye disease. Advances in spheno-orbital meningioma management, including resection of the anterior clinoid process, are essential due to the condition's propensity for recurrence. Radiotherapy decisions for spheno-orbital meningioma remain complex and should be guided by further investigation into tumor biology and behavior. Long-term follow-up is crucial in managing spheno-orbital meningioma to appropriately adapt treatment protocols and understand disease progression. The more information you can bring with you, the better your consultation will be. Goal setting is an important part of any procedure, and it is no different in this case. In this episode, I'll guide you through the four main goals of a facial consultation, from pre-consultation to recovery, to help you understand what to look for and to empower you to be part of the process. Topics covered in this episode include: Goal 1: Do you and your surgeon/injector have aligned goals? The first goal is to determine if you both have the same measure of success. (02:41) Goal 2: Are you the right candidate? It is important to explore whether you are mentally, physically, and psychologically equipped to undergo the procedure. (06:12) Goal 3: Are we compatible? The relationship between you and your surgeon is a major component of the overall process. (08:04) Goal 4: When should I schedule my procedure? Adequate recovery time is essential and it is likely to affect your professional and personal life. Another point to consider is that many cosmetic surgeons are booked months in advance. (09:13) What to expect on the day of your consultation, who to bring with you, and what to consider if you are over 50 and/or have chronic medical problems, such as diabetes or high blood pressure. (14:45) Why evaluating your skincare plan is a vital part of the consultation. Do us a favor and leave us a review on Apple podcasts: apple.co/2RIsbZ2 (0:50) - Bioprinting During Surgery: Trauma to the head or face can be difficult to address and oftentimes requires bone grafts from the patient or cadaverous. Professor Ibrahim Ozbolat's team at Penn State has addressed this by developing bio inks for hard and soft tissue enabling in situ bioprinting during surgery. (7:40) - Hairbrush Robot:Nurses spend 18-40% of their time on direct patient care which involves hygienic maintenance like brushing hair. A joint effort from MIT & Harvard aims to alleviate so of their workload by automating the hair brushing process using robots.(13:10) - Anode Free Batteries:Lithium ion batteries power almost all major electronic appliances that we use today; however the main ingredient is scarce and therefore ~25% of the cost we pay is just for the battery. Professor Pen Bai from Washington University wants to address this issue using their new anode free sodium based battery cells that were developed.

Aesthetic medical science is currently experiencing a scientific revolution. Until recently, full invasive surgical procedures such as Facelifts or Necklifts were the only choice, however, a recently introduced procedure called Ellevate™ has been met with great interest by the aesthetic medical community. In this interview with Aesthetic Insider™ Radio, Florida based plastic surgeon, Adam J. Rubinstein, MD, a pioneering early adopter of the new Ellevate™ minimally invasive surgical procedure for lowerface, jawline and neck rejuvenation discusses why he chose to train in the Ellevate™ procedure and offer it to his patients. As with all new scientific technologies and procedures, the early adopter pioneers such as Dr. Rubinstein are critical to the growth of aesthetic medicine and its best practices because they are the surgeons who perform new procedures using new technologies that will ultimately help shape and set the medical standards and surgical protocols for the next generation of surgeons. Listen in as Dr. Rubinstein discusses the new Ellevate™ surgical procedure as well as the new ICLED® light guided suture rod system, which is necessary to perform the Ellevate™ procedure.
