The Wisdom of Sirach or Ecclesiasticus, as the book is known in the Western or Latin tradition, is a choice composition from the Wisdom literature of the Old Testament. Written in the 2nd century BC in Hebrew and translated into Greek by the author's grandson in Alexandria, Egypt, this majestic portion of Holy Scripture combines the rich aphorisms of traditional Hebrew sapiential literature with the concerns and background of 2nd-century Hellenic culture. Jesus, the Son of Sirach, was highly prized by the Church Fathers from the earliest days of the Church. In these five lectures, Father Josiah hones in on the themes of learning and seeking wisdom, humility, work, wealth, almsgiving, friendship, social life, wives, women, medicine and physicians, youth and aging, and wise speech and the power of words. In these topical lectures, practical substance is given to the practice of the fear of God in a wide array of human activity so that the servant of God pleases the Lord and lives thoroughly and thoughtfully before Him. Lecture #1 - Learning and Humility. Lecture #2 - Work and Wealth in Sirach Lecture #3 - Almsgiving, Friendship, and Social Relations Lecture #4 - Wives, Women, and the Stages of Life Lecture #5 - Wise Words Visit our merch store and support Patristic Nectar! https://patristic-nectar.mybigcommerce.com Please subscribe and rate the podcast! [Evangelicals, on this episode, we aren't laughing at you. The guest is too nice to do this and I'd be too much a hypocrite]We released Eastern Orthodox Part 1 with former "rock stars (Luxury) gone Orthodox Priests" because I had no idea what the heck it meant to be orthodox and had to know. Little did I know, the episode would influence my brother (former co-host and current producer of this show) to fully convert to the best paradigm of faith he's ever worshipped in, perfectly suited to how he's wired up. He's all in, I'm happy for him. -- Joey But there's more to the story. The Orthodox church is THE REAL church? My brother claims there's one true church and the implications would say that most of us aren't in it. Father Josiah Trenham Ph.d, comes on to discuss this very question. He also explains the importance of church buildings, “the invisible church doctrine” of evangelicals, how the functionality evangelicals ascribe to the “sinner's prayer” is heresy, how Pentecostals aren't Pentecostal enough and how prayer is the goal of life. The question is posed here also, “If the true church is infallible, why did most of its adherents take part in the American slavery?”At top of episode, me and some friends talk moral dilemmas and pacifism. Today Cynthia features an interview with Father Josiah Trenham where they discuss the beauty of Lent. One of the most loved interviews from My Beautiful Lent 2019, they talk about the Lenten season as a training ground for the Christian. Lent strengthens us to run the race with endurance as we are exhorted to do by Saint Paul. A native Southern Californian, Father Josiah attended Westminster Seminary California, receiving his M.Div. in 1992 while studying under some of the most influential teachers in the Reformed tradition. In 1993, he was ordained to the Holy Priesthood of the Orthodox Church and in 2004 he was awarded a Ph.D. in Theology from the University of Durham, England. Father Josiah has served as pastor of St. Andrew Orthodox Church in Riverside, California, since 1998. He is an Adjunct Professor of Theology at St. Katherine College in San Marcos, California (2010 – present), and was an Adjunct Professor at California Baptist University (2003-2010). In this four-part lecture series, Father Josiah presents an exposition of St. Paul's Epistle to the Philippians. Of all St. Paul's letters in the New Testament, Philippians is the most personal. The Great Apostle had a very dear relationship with this local church, and the theme of Christian joy radiates in each of the four chapters. This is deeply intriguing since St. Paul wrote this joyful letter of thanksgiving while he was in prison! In this sacred letter is revealed the world-conquering mystery of Christian faith. Here St. Paul unveils the orientation of his entire life when he says, "For me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain." Each of the chapters contains some of the most sublime teachings of the Gospel, including in chapter 2 the most detailed apostolic teaching on the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ found in the entire New Testament. These lectures are presented with the sincere hope that a more thorough study of this Pauline letter will fill believers with the joy which St. Paul models and of which he speaks.

Please enjoy our newest offering, a ten part lecture series by Father Josiah entitled A Heart for God: Lessons from the Life of the Holy King and Prophet David Christians are indebted to no one in the Old Testament more than to the Holy Prophet and King, David. He alone, amongst all the believers in the ancient covenant, is described by the Lord as having a “heart for God.” David's sin, in infamy 2nd only to that of Adam, has been meditated upon by believers, as has David's deep repentance—which has provided an image for countless penitents to imitate over the centuries in order to find peace with God. In these ten lectures Father Josiah surveys the entire life of King David—from his early rise as a humble shepherd, to his years in hiding from Saul, to the magnificent covenant that God cut with him which provided the prism through which believers have come to understand He Who is the ultimate Son of David, the true King of Kings who reigns on David's throne at the right hand of the Father; the one's whose heart is gentle and perfect: Jesus Christ the Lord. All ten lectures are available for download for $20 (or individually for $3 each)…lecture 1 is free for download.
