Ellen Carozza is a Licensed Veterinary Technician since 1996 who has worked exclusively with feline patients since 2002, Ellen (The CAT LVT)  currently resides at NOVA CAT CLINIC in Arlington, VA and is one of the founders of the Chris Griffey Memorial Feline Foundation, a 501(c)3 dedicated to the critical feline neonate and pediatric cases. In addition to her full time career as a Licensed Veterinary Technician, and her “mother of kittens'' role with the foundation, she also lectures on the veterinary circuit. Known for her no-nonsense attitude and practical methods of teaching, Ellen has co-authored several guidelines with the American Association of Feline Practitioners as well as the International Society of Feline Medicine. She has been featured in “AAHA Trends Magazine”, “Today's Veterinary Nurse”, “Vet Girl on the Run'' as well social media news outlets such as “LOVE MEOW “and “The DODO .”  She was featured as Jackson Galaxy's Cat Camp “camp nurse” before COVID teaching their veterinary nursing courses for cats as well as being a long time mentor to  Hannah Shaw, The Kitten Lady to name a few with her work on saving critical kittens instead of euthanasia. Ellen is also one of the three members of the AVTCP organization committee that created the AVTCP Feline subspecialty and holds the title of VTS (CP-Feline) in North America. Aside from not having enough hours in the day, her latest big adventure brings her expanding the CGMFF's work to Otavalo, Ecuador in November 2022 along with CHASE where they will be providing charitable veterinary services to the local community.  After a long day at work, Ellen comes home to four cats of her own amazing cats; St. Ambrose, Michelle, Loki and Brother Noggin as well as a tolerant husband and daughter that still don't understand her obsession over cats.Support Ellen:https://criticalkittens.orghttps://www.facebook.com/thecatlvthttps://www.instagram.com/thecatlvt/Not One More Vet:https://www.NOMV.ORGNot One More Vet - Race Around The World (Donation)https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=5BQGXT8YNKUH4Support the show :TwitterFacebookInstagramEmail

Now that I've rested, I think I'll saunter to my perch in the window to see if there are any birds out there at the feeder. Yay butterflies!!! Time to sharpen my nails on my nifty rope post. The Pet Doctor - Keeping your pets healthy & pet wellness - Pets & Animals on Pet Life Radio (PetLifeRadio.com)

To let your cat outside or not, that is one of those vexing questions that cat owners wrestle with… the pros and cons are almost limitless. Pros: Envision your cat scampering up trees, stalking butterflies in the tall grass or lazily basking in the sun…what an idyllic life for a cat. Cons: the cat fight on your back fence that results in a deep bite wound and the subsequent deadly Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) infection it contracts, or the encounter with a speeding car as it attempts to cross the street and let's not forget about the mauling on your own property by a free roaming dog. Cats love to go outside but we know that there are innumerable dangers just beyond your backdoor, even in your backyard. But is it fair to keep them solely inside? Won't they get bored, fat, destructive? What can concerned responsible cat owners do to keep their cats and the wildlife that cats are drawn to predate safe? Dr. Kelly St. Denis is the president of the American Association of Feline Practitioners. She is certified with the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in the specialty of feline practice. Dr. St. Denis is proudly one of the 6 Canadian feline specialist members of Cat Healthy Canada. EPISODE NOTES: Inside Outside, You Decide

Tabitha knew early on in her life that she wanted to be a veterinary technician. Once she became one, however, seeing cats euthanized for behavioral and other reasons were deeply troubling to her. Tabitha felt, and continues to feel, that cats are often stereotyped and used as scapegoats—even by cat lovers—making it harder for them to get the help they need to stay in their homes. Tabitha feels that “Humans aren’t really set up for success for cats. They love their cats; they just don’t have the education to do their best.” Through Chirrups and Chatters, she hopes to change that. Blunt Dissection: The best minds in veterinary medicine, academia & business profiled so you can learn from their experience.

My guest on today’s show is cat vet extraordinaire, Dr Susan Little. Susan received her DVM from Ontario Veterinary College, Guelph and has been in feline practice since 1990, achieving board certification in Feline Practice in 1997. She is part owner of two feline speciality practices in Ottawa and is a board member/Past President (2015) of the American Assoc. of Feline Practitioners, Dr Little also serves on the board of the International Council for Veterinary Assessment (the dudes that set the NAVLE). Susan is undoubtedly one of the hardest working speakers on the veterinary circuit, her Airmiles collection is only outweighed by her risk of DVT, such is the time she spends travelling globally to educate us all. But all of her hard work has paid dividends in the form of huge recognition from her peers with accolades including from the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association Small Animal Practitioner Award (2010), the NAVC Small Animal Speaker of the Year Award (2013), and the International Society of Feline Medicine/Hill's Pet Nutrition Award for outstanding contributions to feline medicine (2013). Finally, it would be rude not to mention the two books Susan has edited and co-authored: First up, The Cat: Clinical Medicine and Management, and also August’s Consultations in Feline Internal Medicine. Now, just before we jump into the episode, I just wanted to drop a quick word from our show sponsor which today is the VetX Graduate Mentoring community. If you are a practice owner and want to offer your new vets a greater level of support so they grow faster and stay longer with your practice, then jump onto my website drdavenicol.com/vetx-grad and learn how we are helping graduates across the world thrive in practices just like yours. The class is open for global entry now so check it out. This was my first time spending time with Susan one on one and I hope it will not be my last, she was a riot from start to finish giving generously with both time and knowledge. But what struck me the most was her passion and enthusiasm for both veterinary medicine and life in general. So without further ado, it is my great pleasure to bring you my conversation with the amazing, Dr Susan Little. In the show we cover: 1. Susan’s Oyster Fetish 2. The really dull, but (probably) authentic reasons she became a vet. 3. Her views on the current (poor) "State Of The Veterinary Union”. 4. The tough points in her career and the tools she uses to maintain her state of mind and performance. 5. Why she loves checklists and thinks we should use them way more in veterinary medicine. 6. Life auditing and how to say no. 7. Multiple tips she has for all clinics to improve their feline experience (at no or little cost. Follow Susan at @catvetsusan on twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

I'll admit it…I am addicted to Google. What were the numbers of the last Powerball lottery? Can't remember what Prince called himself before he was Prince? And what is Pokémon Go? When in doubt…Google it. I even use it when I need veterinary information. The answers that pop up on these inquiries are sometimes blatantly wrong or can be highly misleading. So what is a pet owner to do when they want information on pet care? Where can they go to find reliable, reputable information? Dr. Lauren Demos is the 2017 President of the American Association of Feline Practitioners and today's guest. This organization of feline experts has created a spectacular website that is pet parent friendly and cat wise. So curl up with your favorite feline and listen with a purrrpose. You will learn some fascinating facts on how you can be the best cat owner ever. Questions or comments? Email Dr. Cruz at: thepetdoctor@petliferadio.com. Parameters were measured as soon as the patient was induced, at 30 and 60 minutes afterwards, and overall. What'd this study find? Overall, this study found that those patients that received 20 mL of LRS/kg/hour had the greatest total and perfused density vessel (in those vessels that were > 20 μm in diameter, which are mostly venules and arterioles). So what do we take from it? While our healthy patients undergoing elective procedures are at low-risk for hypoperfusion under general anesthesia as compared to our critically ill patients, keep in mind that fluid losses can occur through blood loss, the respiratory tract, and through the abdominal cavity. When these fluid losses occur in the face of anesthetic drugs, there is the risk of poor perfusion. And you know a criticalist's favorite answer to every veterinary question out there: perfusion and metabolic acidosis, right? “When we monitor a patient's blood pressure or oxygen levels, we're not always able to discern what is happening at the cellular level,” Silverstein said. “Sometimes there are tissues and cells that are getting a surplus of oxygen while other cells or tissues are in need of more, but our measuring the big things, like blood pressure, doesn't tell us that. The only way we figure that out is when the patient develops organ dysfunction or new complications arise following anesthesia.” The American Animal Hospital Association and American Association of Feline Practitioners recommend the use of IV fluids in their guidelines under even routine procedures. While it adds to the cost of surgery (well, barely), it's worth it. Based on this study, it may improve the microcirculation in our anesthetized patients! “The larger vessels are the ones that are constricting and dilating to feed the microcirculation,” Silverstein said. “And it appears that the animals that got the highest rate of fluids in this study - which may not be the optimal rate - are the ones that seemed to have the greatest recruitment of arterioles and venules.” For more information, check out Penn News. It is estimated that there are 10 million more cats in the United States than dogs. That's almost 82 million cats at the end of 2006 and the number continues to rise. But with the increasing popularity of cats, the fact that these furry felines receive less professional attention than their canine cousins makes you want to yowl. The latest figures reveal that in a single year, 83% of dog owners take their dogs to the veterinarian as compared to only 64% of cat owners. Are cats just healthier than dogs? No, they can experience just as many maladies as dogs. Today I will be speaking with the president of the American Association of Feline Practitioners, Dr. Valerie Creighton, about conditions that affect cats, how to recognize if your cat is sick as a dog and what you can do to ensure that your feline friend experiences the best quality of its nine lives. We live in an age when keeping cats and dogs healthy and happy has never been easier--or more expensive! And according to the AVMA, cats are getting the short end of the furry stick when it comes to seeing the veterinarian. Has veterinary care become too rich for your wallet? Why do cats see the veterinarian less frequently than dogs--surely dog owners don’t love their pets more than cat owners? Dr. Jane Brunt, a past president of the American Association of Feline Practitioners and chair of the Catalyst Summit, offers insights into these issues and more.
