Whether you're managing a patient with aspiration pneumonia, pulmonary oedema or trauma causing haemorrhage and bruising, patients with lung disease can decompensate quickly and need intensive nursing care. Knowing what to look out for and the nursing considerations these patients need is vital - and that's exactly what we're discussing in this episode. We'll be breaking down the different pulmonary diseases we see, the impact they have on our patients, and how we can manage them successfully as nurses and technicians. Plus, I'm sharing six of my all-time top tips to help you care for these patients confidently (whilst using a load of nursing skills). So if you've ever felt unsure about pulmonary pathophysiology or felt like you could do more to help your respiratory patients, this episode is for you. --- More free ways to learn with me:

In episode 71 of the Medical Nursing Podcast we're following on from last week's feline focus and taking a look at lower airway diseases in our canine counterparts.  We might not see them as often, and they might appear more stable - well, most of the time - but these cases are anything but boring, requiring lots of nursing care, both in the clinic and long-term. Just like our asthmatic cats, it's good quality nursing that makes all the difference, and to give that great care, we need to understand the lower airway diseases we see, and the impact they have on our patients - which is exactly what we're covering in this episode. --- More free ways to learn with me:

In episode 70, we're talking about some of the most difficult patients we see - dyspnoeic cats. Yep, there's nothing like that dyspnoeic cat emergency - they arrive SO stressed, and it feels almost counterintuitive that staying AWAY from them is actually the thing that helps them most in those early stages. The majority of dyspnoeic cats we see have feline asthma - a form of lower airway disease. This disease is pretty misunderstood and is far more complex than ‘just' being asthma, so in this episode of the Medical Nursing Podcast, we're looking at exactly what it is and how to manage these patients confidently and calmly from start to finish. --- Resources mentioned in this episode:

One major risk for retirees is long-term care, which should always be addressed in any financial plan. Additionally, the concept of short-term care is becoming increasingly relevant in retirement planning. Paul Brock, an insurance expert with over 21 years of experience, explains the differences between short-term and long-term care. Short-term care typically lasts up to a year, while long-term care extends beyond that, with each serving different healthcare needs. Despite Medicare covering a range of healthcare services, it does not cover either long-term or short-term care, making it crucial to understand these distinctions when planning for retirement. A pulmonary embolism is a condition in which vessels in the lungs are blocked by a thrombus or other material that has traveled from somewhere else in the body. This is usually a result of a venous thromboembolism, but can also be due to amniotic fluid, air or fat embolus, or tumor material in patients with cancer. A key thing to understand about pulmonary embolism is that the airway is not occluded. In pulmonary embolism, one or more blood vessels are occluded. What this means is that blood coming from the right side of the heart isn't able to pass freely through the pulmonary vasculature to participate in gas exchange, which negatively affects perfusion. In this conversation, Kevin and Dennis discuss nursing care in a prolonged field care (PFC) setting. Kevin, an experienced nurse anesthetist, provides insights into when PFC nursing care begins and the importance of gathering data and assessing patients. He emphasizes the role of nurses in providing interventions such as pulmonary toileting, turning patients, skincare, dressing changes, medication infusions, and more. Kevin also discusses the challenges of training for PFC and the need to have a standard of care before entering the field. He shares practical tips for cleaning patients and changing interventions in a resource-limited environment. In this part of the conversation, Kevin and Dennis discuss the importance of getting to know the patient and recognizing when interventions are not working. They also talk about the need for clear guidelines and parameters for nursing care, as well as the challenges of providing nursing care in a prolonged field care setting. Kevin emphasizes the importance of turning patients, preventing skin breakdown, and doing proper pulmonary toileting. He also suggests learning from historical examples, such as the Navy's approach in the South Pacific during World War II, to solve the challenges of prolonged field care. Takeaways Prolonged field care nursing begins when life-saving interventions are complete and the patient is stable. Nursing care in PFC involves gathering data, assessing patients, and providing interventions such as pulmonary toileting, skincare, dressing changes, and medication infusions. Training for PFC should include working in an ICU to learn the standard of care and understand what gets degraded in the field. In a resource-limited environment, improvisation and prioritization are key in providing nursing care. Monitoring vital signs and recognizing changes is crucial in determining when to involve a provider in the patient's care. Getting to know the patient and recognizing when interventions are not working is crucial in providing effective care. Clear guidelines and parameters for nursing care are important to ensure proper treatment. Turning patients, preventing skin breakdown, and doing proper pulmonary toileting are essential nursing interventions. Learning from historical examples, such as the Navy's approach in the South Pacific during World War II, can provide valuable insights for solving the challenges of prolonged field care.
