Brian Yuzna's film Society took a long time to find distribution in the US, and disappeared from theaters just as quickly as it arrived. Thankfully, with the advent of VHS, the film was able to find its eventual audience in the 90's and 00's. Featuring solid direction from Brain Yuzna, solid 80's acting from Billy Warlock, and some of the best practical effects ever committed to celluloid thanks to fx maestro Screaming Mad George and his talented team, Society may not be a film for everyone, but it's one you won't soon forget. #cultmovies #cultclassic #moviereview #society #brianyuzna #screamingmadgeorge

"The Ballad of John D. Cort" continues as Tread Perilously heads back to the beach for an episode of Baywatch called "Snake Eyes." When John D. Cort invites Shauni and Eddie to an illegal casino aboard a rusting boat, he thinks it's all in good fun. But when Eddie catches a streak of beginner's luck and wins $2,000, he also catches the gold fever. Returning to the boat the next day, he gives it all back and signs a marker totaling three grand. Will he come clean to Shauni and the others? And will Cort figure out a way to bail out his hapless pal? Erik and Justin try to determine Cort's G.I. Joe codename. Eddie's failures as a character leave them to question if it's all a joke at actor Billy Warlock's expense. Several TV shows get pitched thanks to Cort's hijinks. The Full Peril film list continues to grow. Werner Herzog returns. Justin becomes the expert in a beach-focused Geography Corner. Erik explains why David Hasselhoff and Sharon Stone never shared the screen. Justin outlines what a date with John D. Cort would be like. He also finds something to like about Mitch. Comedian Brian Haley gets a special spotlight and Casino becomes the most important film recommendation of the last few weeks.

On this edition of Parallax Views, the 1989 horror film Society has become a cult classic for it's wild mix of body horror, dark humor, satire of high society, and class warfare politics. Joining us to discuss that movie, as well as his work on other horror movies past and present, is the film's co-write Zeph E. Daniel. In the second hour, Zeph and I discuss his return to screenwriting with the 2021 horror/thriller GIRL NEXT, a story of a young woman's fight to survive after being kidnapped by human traffickers that gets very strange when demonic entities, body-altering drugs, quantum physics, and a sinister MKULTRA-style government experiment are thrown into the plot's mix. Among the topics covered in our conversation: - How Zeph became involved in screenwriting and early sci-fi writing - Working with producer/director Brian Yuzna, known for his body-horror films including the Re-Animator franchise and Society - How Society's initial story involved a Satanic cult rather than strange, alien-like shapeshifting beings posing as rich humans in Beverly Hills - Satirizing the shallowness of the wealthy and Beverly Hills culture - Silent Night, Deadly Night 4: Initiation and it's witchcraft plot involving the demon Lilith - The length of the filming shoot for the Yuzna-made movies Zeph worked on - Zeph's thoughts on Bride of Re-Animator - The class warfare element of Society, Zeph's interview with the left-wing publication Jacobin, and the exploitation of the poor by the rich in Society's story - Actress Devin DeVasquez's "Clarissa" character in Society - The differences between Zeph's original story for Society and the movie itself - Special effects artist Screaming Mad George and the infamous "The Shunting" ritual scene in Society - Girl Next and the story of how Zeph formed Crazed House Ltd. with director Larry Wade Carell - Zeph's belief in spiritual warfare - Zeph's thoughts and feelings on his work being rejected by the Christian community despite his being a born again Christian; the story of how his evangelical Christian novel Lamb was rejected by the Christian community; the fear of creativity that exists within some Christian circles - The next Crazed House Ltd. movie and the big name horror star legend that'll have a voice role in the film - Experiences at Texas Frightmare Weekend - Problems with wanting to express one's authentic creative self and still getting funding to make a movie - Sex in cinema; the sexual scenes in Girl Next - An explanation of the body-altering drug that's central to Girl Next's plot; how quantum physics and simulation theory play into Girl Next and it's upcoming sequels - Zeph's "Special Thank You" credit in the serial killer movie Ed Gein starring Steve Railsback (The Stuntman; Helter Skelter) - How Zeph works with people who do not share his beliefs about religion or his personal story - The cult classic status of Society today and the different types of people that have come to love the film - Society as a movie that was soft banned in the U.S. but very popular in Europe - Zeph's speculations on what happened to Society's protagonist Bill Whitley (played by Billy Warlock) after the events of the story - The trials and tribulations of making Girl Next - Zeph's early experiences on the radical left - Power elites and oppression of working people - The infamous "The rich have always sucked off low-class shit like you" line in Society that crystalizes it's class conflict themes - And much, much more!

Society (1989)   American body horror film directed by Brian Yuzna, and starring Billy Warlock, Devin DeVasquez, Evan Richards, and Ben Meyerson. Its plot follows a Beverly Hills teenager who finds his wealthy parents are part of a gruesome cult for the social elite. Though the film was completed in 1989, it was not released until 1992. It was Yuzna's directorial debut and was written by Rick Fry and Woody Keith. Screaming Mad George was responsible for the special effects.  For the film's most surreal and gory sequence, the "shunting," Yuzna based it on his nightmares. The sequence was further inspired by The Great Masturbator, a Dali painting.   Parents (1989)   An American black comedy horror film directed by Bob Balaban and written by Christopher Hawthorne.  It stars Randy Quaid, Mary Beth Hurt, Sandy Dennis and Bryan Madorsky.   The New York Times wrote "The satire of the 50s is more bland than biting, dependent on authentically garish costumes and sets. And when the horror-film scenes begin to intrude on normal life (what is hanging from the cellar ceiling, anyway?) Mr. Balaban can't make the dark elements seem comic enough to mesh with the rest of this nightmarish joke."   Opening Credits/Introduction (1:51); Oh My GOD!!! Tread Perilously's Grab Bag month concludes with a return to Baywatch for "We Need A Vacation." When Craig complains about splitting his time between being a lifeguard, a lawyer, and a husband, John D. Cort suggests going to Mexico for a quick vacation. As it happens, he's already planning to take Eddie there to teach him some surfing. Instead of surf and relaxation, they end up in the mythical Mexico that only exists in film and television. Meanwhile, Hobie gets the hots for Shauni, but Mitch Buchanan is too busy dealing with Captain Thorpe's marital troubles to notice. Will Mitch ever take an interest in his son? Justin and Erik are thrilled to return to the Ballad of John D. Cort, even if he's more douchebag than good guy this time around. Hobie proves to be more emotionally mature than Eddie, but his storyline still ends up in the hot seat. Erika Eleniak's qualities as a TV presence are examined. Justin suggests the notion of a biblically-accurate Saruman. Day and night once again fail to have meaning. Erik suggests the episode may be a backdoor pilot for a new series for John Allen Nelson, Parker Stevenson, and Billy Warlock. Also, the love affair with John Allen Nelson continues.

In our first episode, the Cadaver Dogs (Devin, David, and Rob) compare the classist themes in READY OR NOT (2019) and SOCIETY (1989). Demonic devotion or trans-species relation: what is the source of our class struggles? Do the rich really feed upon the poor? And how does our political era affect the horror genre?   We explore the flawed belief systems of the wealthy and the fear of Trumpism when digging into Radio Silence's film starring Samara Weaving, Adam Brody and Andie MacDowell. Then, we go back to the Saved by The Bell surf 80s, Reaganomics era and dive into the incestuous aristocracy through Brian Yuzna's body horror camp classic starring Billy Warlock. A late 1980's horror classic on tap for this one, Andy and Lucas bring special guest Jeff Webster for a dissection of the film, Society. An ordinary teenage boy discovers his family is part of a gruesome orgy cult for the social elite. Bill is worried that he is 'different' from his sister and parents. They mix with other 'upper class' people while Bill is more down to earth. Even his girlfriend seems a bit odd. All is revealed when Bill returns home to find a party in full swing. Not for the weak of stomach. Written in part by Rob Hartill . Special thanks to Ash St. John for the theme music. Tread Merrily concludes with a return trip to Baywatch for the two-part Christmas episode, "Silent Night, Baywatch Night." When Matt expresses his disdain for Christmas, a number of little people camp out by his tower. He comes to believe they are Santa's elves. Meanwhile, Mitch wants to celebrate a very special Christmas with his new girlfriend Tracy, who also happens to be his employee. CJ's beauty seemingly causes a priest to reconsider his devotion to the Lord. Hobie meets another street urchin with a compulsion for grifting. Will they die when a goon lures them out to the pier? Sarah Madden returns for a slice of holiday cheer. She also learns about Man Power Pills and John Allen Nelson. Justin finds himself missing the acting talents of Billy Warlock. The group begins to identify Friends characters as their Odyssey counterparts. Sarah points out Christmas week weather in Los Angeles rarely allows for bikinis. David Charvet gets turned into an elusive hitman and Showtime is unveiled as the home of the nostalgic wank. Well, at least in the 1990s. Professional film and television goon Rhino Michaels gets dubbed "Slow Renegade." David Hasselhoff becomes the fourth Doctor What and Justin completely fails to make a joke land.

Tread Perilously offers a bonus grab bag episode as it heads back to the beach with the Baywatch episode "Point of Attack." John D. Cort waltzes back into town in time to save Eddie from a bunch of "vatos." But instead of sending the kids off the jail, Eddie and Mitch get them enrolled in the L.A. County Lifeguards' W.A.T.E.R. Program; which introduces disadvantaged youths to beach activities like windsurfing. Unfortunately, one of the kids, Memo, tries to evade joining the program. Does it have anything to do with his father (guest star Danny Trejo)? Will Eddie be able to get through to them both? Will Cort steal the show from the regular Baywatch cast? Justin professes his love for actor John Allen Nelson while Erik eventually explains his character, John D. Cort. Both recall when people dressed like the "vatos" in this week's episode. Justin glimpses a better version of Baywatch. The fight between Nelson and Trejo ends up a highlight even if Eddie (star Billy Warlock) is meant to be the lead character. A theory forms around David Hasselhoff's absence from the episode. Justin critiques the presentation of CPR chest compressions on television and Erik finds a new thesis project.

On today’s Daytime Confidential episode Luke, Jamey, Regan and Jillian dish about the latest All My Children, As the World Turns, The Bold and the Beautiful, Days of our Lives, General Hospital, One Life to Live and The Young and the Restless storylines and news, including: Should Robin Christopher return to All My Children now that her time on General Hospital is wrapping up? JR, Annie and Adam are all battling for control of Chandler and Skye’s return might just up the intensity. Ryan suffers from an aneurysm and we’re led to believe once again that Greenlee is the love of Ryan’s life. Luke’s convinced that AMC is trying to make him hate Greenlee. As the World Turns revealed their plans for the upcoming tribute to Helen Wagner. Lucinda is pleased when Sierra returns to Oakdale. Scott Clifton made his debut on The Bold and the Beautiful. Steffy gets what’s coming to her after all her manipulations of Brooke and Oliver. Luke was surprised to discover how much he enjoyed Ridge accepting Brooke’s mistake for what it was and wanting to move past it. Jamey cannot believe B&B is wasting a major talent like Sarah Brown. She shouldn’t be on the back burner. She should be front and center. Days of our Lives gives Lindsay Hartley the pink slip just when things were getting good. EJ and Arianna had great chemistry and showed potential. Jamey would like to see her end up on One Life to Live as Kim and have that character mix things up with Clint again. Night time hope tries to burn down the house around Bo. Will Ty Treadway coming to Salem entice Regan to tune in? The Franco Fiasco is really screwing up General Hospital and is laughable. Bring on the Cassadine storyline that was sidelined for the first Franco stint and give us something that isn’t a joke. Unlike the Franco debacle the shootout at the hospital was gripping. The DC gang weighs in on the Drew Garrett rumors that surfaced online about him possibly going to The Young and the Restless. One Life to Live casts Billy Warlock in the role of Ross Rayburn. Are both Jessica and Natalie’s babies Brody’s? Much like the Franco Fiasco on General Hospital the Bennett Thompson mess on OLTL just doesn’t make sense. Why did they have to turn a character with so much potential into a mustache twirler? Isn’t there a better way to give Robin Strasser and Erika Slezak a storyline? Welcome to a very Brady The Young and the Restless as the No. 1 rated soap casts Susan Olsen in a drive-by role. Jillian weighs in on the debut of Malcolm’s fiancé Sofia and shares her first impression. Cricket knows Ronan’s secret, but will they keep it from Nina or will they tell her the truth?

On today’s CBS and Days of our Lives Daytime Confidential podcast Luke, Jamey and Melodie discuss the latest in As the World Turns, The Bold and the Beautiful, Days of our Lives and The Young and Restless storylines and news, including: The Daytime Emmys return to a big three network as CBS announces they will air daytime’s biggest night on June 27. The DC gang discusses what this means for the industry and who would Jamey like to see host the show. Les Moonves wants a piece of The View’s action and is developing a talk show starring his wife Julie Chen and actress Sarah Gilbert. Other rumored co-hosts include former Days of our Lives star and Soap Talk host Lisa Rinna and one of The Real Housewives of New York City. What does this mean for CBS’s remaining soaps and can it actually take on The View? The Young and the Restless loses almost a half million viewers. How are the multiple doppelgangers, Adam’s presumed death and the other crazy storylines playing out on our screens impacting the No. 1 soap’s ratings? Michelle Stafford tells TV Guide Canada she did a “spit take” in the now infamous scene between her Victoria Rowell. Billy Warlock heads to As the World Turns, but are all these new characters just too much? Why aren’t we seeing more past characters and not so many newbies? Luke Snyder isn’t sure how to respond after Dr. Reid kisses him. The Logan family blames Stephanie for Beth’s death on The Bold and the Beautiful, but shouldn’t the focus of this story be on Brooke and not Donna? Days of our Lives’ Chloe and Philip hook up after they are led to believe their significant others are cheating on them. What is happening to Hope Brady? Is she reverting back to Princess Gina? All this and much more on today’s show!
