My guest this week is an incredible woman, whose life and career were turned upside down by circumstances. We talk often on this podcast about how circumstances shape the careers of women, but in the case of Victoria Jenkins, the circumstances were becoming disabled in her mid twenties. Before becoming ill, Victoria was forging a successful career as a garment technologist, working for the likes of Sweaty Betty, Jack Wills and Victoria Beckham no less. She was doing well, and that's an understatement. But at the age of 26, her life turned upside down - I'll let her tell you her story in the podcast, but suffice to say, she ended up founding her own fashion company, Unhidden, to cater to people requiring adaptive clothing that's stylish, beautifully made and affordable. Victoria is now an entrepreneur, business owner, disability advocate and brand ambassador for Models of Disability. She's a tour de force, and I'd urge you pop out and buy her book The Little Book of Ableism. We started, as ever, talking about her early life as one of six kids. Victoria Diana is a stand-up comedian, a writer, and a filmmaker in Upstate NY. In 2020 she won a $40,000 grant from the Central New York Short Film Competition, an arts-funded initiative by Empire State Development and sponsored by the CNY Arts/Innovation Group. She used that money to fund her short film called "Devour". According to the article on oswego.edu: [Victoria] Diana's “Devour” is a drama following former lovers on different trajectories in ia chef who is about to close for the night at his struggling, once successful, restaurant, when an old flame shows up at his door,' Diana said. 'She is now a rising actress, who traveled up to Syracuse from NYC, in search of a familiar comfort.' Two of her friends, Kristin Noriega and Kevin Miner, presented Diana with the concept and which she immediately found exciting. “I love food, and the relationships people have with it. I also wanted to explore nostalgia, and the rose-colored tint it gives our memories,” Diana said. “For ‘Devour,' I challenged myself by writing a drama (my comfort zone is comedy); but for fun, I went dialogue-crazy.” Find Victoria doing bits on Tik Tok, reposting them on Instagram, and shit-posting on Facebook.

Victoria Pardo is a Columbia educated historic preservationist. Her expertise and her passion for her work take her to many places on the map. She is exploring entrepreneurship with ‘Food & Architecture',a travel and folkways blog and set of services for the public. In this episode we spoke about the importance of food and architecture in connecting us with our past. It is also important in describing who we are and what is important to us as a society. Our folkways connect us to family. In Victoria's own words: ‘My most vivid childhood memories center around the kitchen: smells of tender pork shoulder simmering for hours in a savory tomato sauce, and most notably, shoving out my tiny fingers to retrieve a piece of Wonder Bread my mother had dipped into it. My mother made meals from a wide array of cultures. She centers her life around food, and as a result, so do I. She not only instilled in me a passion for food and family, but also a tireless work ethic.' Victoria learned first-hand growing up the difference between ‘slow' food and the corporate fast-food system. ‘As I grew older and started learning about the clash of fast-food corporations and traditional food supply methods, I questioned this dilemma more often. I had even seen my mother suffer first hand under their employ. These experiences led me to value and learn more about cultures that prioritize sustainable, locally, grown produce.' Find Victoria on instagram Our discussion also touched upon the social and economic ramifications currently in play and shown in our food sector. As an entrepreneur, we appreciate the work Victoria is doing to bring together her experience across disciplines to further knowledge of ‘the integration between food and sustainable development in order to find attainable solutions to mitigate hunger.' In this episode you will hear Vicky share about her own story, growing up watching abuse and not having very good role models as parents who divorced when she was young. Everything looked perfect on the outside she says, but on the inside she felt like she was dying. Vicky found her strength from her daughter, knowing she had to do something different for her. She broke the toxic generational ties and provided her daughter a better life by going after what she was passionate about, finding the self-worth to leave the toxic marriage and setting the both of them up for success. Victoria Metal is a music teacher from North Carolina. At 25, she’s one of the youngest guests on Teenage Kicks, and much closer in age to my teenagers than she is to me. She talks about something I think is common to lots of teenagers, and adults, Depression. Teenage depression and anxiety facts Depression and anxiety among teens is common, with nearly a third presenting with symptoms of an anxiety disorder by the age of 18, with anxiety in teenage girls more than twice as common as it is in boys. Teenage years are some of the most stressful times of our lives, with the burden of needing to succeed academically, and social pressures adding to the intense experience of physical development and puberty. What causes anxiety in teens? Victoria describes what kickstarted her anxiety – school pressures, friendship issues and overwhelm. Just normal stuff, that so many families will relate to. As a young girl she spent hours on the floor of her bedroom listening to music, just to escape from her emotions. She also tells me about how she tried to ask for help, but didn’t manage to get the support she needed in time to prevent what happened later. Why teenage mental health needs to be taken seriously I was struck by how well Victoria coped as a teenager. Talking to her reminded me that being 18 doesn’t make you an adult, and that young people still need emotional support as they begin adult life. Panic attacks and anxiety Victoria did eventually get the support she needed, but not before suffering panic attacks at work, and eventually going back to the beginning, and working out the roots of her anxiety with her mother. Whilst panic attacks in teens aren’t usual, Victoria’s story serves as a warning that teen mental health is as important to take care of as physical health to ensure symptoms don’t worsen further down the line. Once you’ve finished listening, I’d urge you to go and download this episode of Victoria’s own podcast, The Intention Seekers. In it she reads through her graduation speech, which gave me goosebumps. “You are going to be missed” she told her class, and this is the sentiment she’d offer to those going through the anxiety and self-doubt that many teenagers experience: You matter. You are loved. Keep going. What can parents do? For parents, this conversation with Victoria made me realise how difficult it is to identify and express your feelings at this age, and that actually, asking for help might cost them a LOT! Have a listen to how she first expressed her panic at the state of her emotional health at the age of 12 – it’s a little bit heartbreaking. I'll be talking to some fabulous guests about difficult things that happened to them as teenagers - including losing a parent, becoming a young carer, and being hospitalised with mental health problems - and how they overcame things to move on with their lives. My guest today is Victoria Maxwell, aka the Bipolar Princess. In Victoria's one woman, international performance, "Crazy For Life", she talks about her own experience with having bipolar disorder in a hilarious, honest and moving way. Victoria was diagnosed with BP in her twenties, and struggled with her diagnosis and treatment in the beginning. No one wants to be nutbar, looney, loopy, or wacko. These are some of the many words we have for crazy, as Victoria has said. Shortly after Victoria had a psychotic episode and ran naked down a major Vancouver street, things began to be more clear. It was an eye opening experience. For literally everyone. There is so much stigma around metal illness, and even more misunderstanding about bipolar disorder. Talking with Victoria was such a weight off my shoulders. In her sharing her story, I was able to tell my own. Tune in for the season one finale episode. She has also completed multiple continuing education courses in the women’s health and fitness realm, and has been in the fitness industry for over 16 years. Victoria's a mom of 3 and understands that ”momming” ain’t easy. Instead of feeling like you’re floating on the cloud of motherly bliss, most days you feel like you’re just trying to survive. That's why she wants every mom to know that it’s so important to make time for herself, and that she should never lose sight of her own health and happiness because they are inextricably intertwined. What's covered in this episode: Potential issues that women may experience postpartum including peeing your pants and painful sex and why there’s always something you can do to rehabilitate Even if you haven’t had children yet and are years away from deciding if you want to go that route, there are things you can do now to improve the health of your pelvic floor Difference between how you can handle rehabilitative exercises after C-section versus vaginal delivery Best exercises women can do for their core/pelvic floor Mom guilt and losing yourself post-baby I'm not a mom, and I already had all kinds of respect for all the hard-working mamas out there. After this episode I'm even more amazed at what women's bodies can do to support a pregnancy and learned so much from Victoria about how we can work to heal some of the biggest and potentially painful issues that can come as a result of pregnancy. One of the biggest things that amazed me is that even if you had children years ago, it's never too late to rehabilitate and fully heal from leftover issues from pregnancy, and that there are exercises you can to to support healthy pelvic health long before any potential pregnancy too! Steroids, particularly anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS), are very popular in all sports, but particularly strength and physique sports (bodybuilding, Weightlifting, powerlifting, and Crossfit). There's a huge taboo around AAS, but an even bigger taboo surrounding women and androgen use. I'm so excited to bring you part 2 with Victoria Felkar, a researcher whose research is quite literally titled, "Women and Steroids." We're diving into that exact topic in this episode. Today we talk about: -Side effects of high levels of androgens in women (whether they have endogenous hyper-androgenism or they're supplementing with androgens) -Are the side effects of high androgens permanent? -Managing female anabolic androgenic steroid use -Coming off of AAS -Hormonal and systemic changes when you take androgens/systems effected when you're on androgens -Things you need to do to regain normal health/function after using AAS -How long does it take to regain normal health after drug use -Is there an intelligent/"healthy" way that women can use anabolics -Being a conscious consumer of your own health -The ignorance surrounding women and AAS -The anabolic:androgenic ratio and what it means -Are your symptoms from AAS or are they something else? -Polypharmacy in steroid use -The purity of non-pharmaceutical AAS -So much more! ---------------- Find Victoria here: Instagram Website Period Tracker ----------------- Today's episode of EMBody Radio is brought to you by Four Sigmatic. Four Sigmatic provides the best in adaptogenic/therapeutic mushroom products. You’ve seen me post about this stuff on Instagram and IG stories all the time, and I wanted to take a sec to tell you a little more about them today. I started using them because I love adaptogens, and many of their mushroom products are just that – adaptogens. Adaptogens basically help you respond better to physical and emotional stress. I run a business, run multiple social media platforms that tie into my business, I’m a student, and I have a life outside of all that that I’m trying to live, so stress management is key. Mushrooms can also be used to help everything from your gut health to your skin. My favorites are the Lion's Mane Mushroom Elixir and the Mushroom Hot Cacao with Reishi... Do you take or have you taken hormonal birth control? Do you understand your own menstrual cycle? Have you ever tried to go off birth control and had an awful time trying to regain your natural cycle? Today I had the pleasure of interviewing Victoria Felkar once again. She was in some of the first episodes of EMBody Radio (episodes 5 & 6 to be exact), and she is a wealth of knowledge. Victoria is a researcher and she studies the things that other people don't seem to want to touch - women and hormones, particularly exogenous ones like birth control and anabolic androgenic steroids. As usual, we talked on and on, so this is part 1 of 2 episodes. In today's show, we talk about: -hormone history and where the gendering of hormones began ("male" hormones vs "female" hormones) -the back story of hormones -the back story of sports medicine/hormone manipulation -the development of synthetic hormones (estrogen, testosterone, progesterone) -how hormonal birth control pills and anabolic androgenic steroids are both "enhancement drugs" from a performance perspective/when used for sport -hormonal birth control pills, why it's prescribed, drug effects, different kinds of synthetic BC pills -getting to know your cycle and how to track it (get your free cycle tracking download here) -why we need to stop demonizing estrogen -castrating the HPO axis (hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian axis) via synthetic estrogens, i.e. birth control -the importance of ovulation -does birth control make fat loss harder and why -SO MUCH MORE! ---------------- Find Victoria here: Instagram Website ----------------- Today's episode of EMBody Radio is brought to you by Four Sigmatic. The body positivity/#BOPO movement is becoming increasingly popular... One question that health professionals, myself included, have asked, is "Does promoting body positivity mean promoting obesity or unhealthy behaviors?" There's also a myriad of fitness influencers/personalities beginning to use body positivity hashtags and claim the movement as their own... which can be problematic. Today's guest, Victoria Myers of Nourishing Minds Nutrition, is a Registered Dietitian who also speaks extremely eloquently on body positivity. She specializes in disordered eating, female hormones, IBS/SIBO, and body positivity. In today's show, we talk about: -The Body Positivity movement and what it means/why it was created, -Defining diet culture and how it impacts our lives, -Internalized vs. externalized fat phobia, -Thin privilege, -Body positivity and promoting health, -Why diets aren't the key to health, -Health at every size, -Recovering from amenorrhea -Coming off of hormonal birth control and getting normal hormone levels back, -Cyclic living, -Traditional foods, -So much more! This episode is FULL of wisdom and I can't wait for you to hear it. --------------- Find Victoria here: Victoria's Instagram Nourishing Minds Nutrition's Instagram Nourishing Women podcast Nourishing Minds Nutrition's Website Victoria's Website --------------- Find me here: Instagram Twitter YouTube My Website

In this episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing researcher, educator, and doctoral student Victoria Felkar on PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), why it's such a mystery in the medical community, the history of PCOS, causes, symptoms, and strategies for PCOS management. We also touch on birth control and the role in plays in PCOS/masking symptoms as opposed to treating the problem. If you or someone you know has been affected by this condition, definitely give this episode a listen. The more we know, the more we can be our own advocates for women's reproductive health. Victoria Rose is The Leadership Voice. She has had an amazing personal journey and fascinating career. In this episode we find out about this inspirational woman and what makes her tick. Victoria was born in a pub. A long, long time ago in a far away place (Oh okay, Albany Western Australia) at 18 years old, her mother became an 'unmarried mother'. Banished to the country, she worked as a barmaid in the hotel. One day, She fell down the stairs and thought that was the cause of her pain. Little did she realise Victoria Rose was about to burst into the world. And burst she did ... Sadly, her uncelebrated entry into the physical world set the tone for an uncelebrated life. Growing up in an environment of secrets, shame and struggle her future happiness looked unlikely. Then one day, she decided to do something different. At 18 years old, she set sail for a two-year working holiday in the UK to discover what life was all about. 32 years ago, as a soldier in the Australian Army Reserve she trained over 7000 officers and soldiers in weapons, drill and theory and was promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer. “Too busy” is a sentence that simply doesn’t fit into Victoria Stoyanova’s vocabulary. A self described “Community Architect” and Project Manager, Victoria is consistently working on 6, 7, 8 projects at any given time - something any ambitious creative can relate to. We sat down with Victoria at Notes to chat about her attitude towards collaboration, project management, and tons more. We also delved into a few of the projects that she’s currently working on - namely Creative Mornings and DAYBREAKER. Needless to say, both her work and her passion are quite inspirational.
