Today it's Midday on Development. A little later in this hour, Tom speaks with Klaus Philipsen, an architect, urban planner and the president of ArchPlan, Inc., a design firm in Baltimore. He also hosts The Community Architect blog and he's the author of Baltimore: Reinventing an Industrial Legacy City. Philipsen discusses the proposal to revive the old "dollar house" homesteading program in Baltimore City and the different urban development strategies that might help move the needle on the more than 15,000 vacant properties scattered throughout the city. Klaus Philipsen joins us on our digital line. But we begin with a Baltimore developer who has for several years built homes and commercial properties in Remington, an historic neighborhood that borders the Johns Hopkins University Homewood Campus. He's also involved in reviving Lexington Market on Baltimore's West Side and other projects. Thibault Manekin is the co-founder of Seawall Development. Drawing on his experience running basketball leagues in South Africa and other countries that was premised on the assumption that playing together heals deep-seated wounds, Manekin has thought about how to bridge the Black and White divide in Baltimore, and transform not just buildings, but lives. He's just published a new book, Larger Than Yourself: Reimagine Industries, Lead With Purpose, & Grow Ideas into Movements. Thibault Manekin joins us on Zoom. After graduating from Florida International University with a degree in International Relations and Latin American & Caribbean Studies, Cat Lantigua picked up everything she knew about work, hustle, and purpose and moved her vibrant, Dominican-American soul to New York City. As an original intent to pursue a career the nonprofit sector fell out of alignment, and her total lack of community started to set in, Cat decided to take her experience with herself and others into her own hands. What started as dinner parties in her dining room for friends around town soon evolved into what's now known as the Goddess Council: a community for women to make new friendships, participate in meaningful conversations, and heal collectively. Cat has since left her corporate role, moved out of the city, and now runs Goddess Council full-time as Community Architect. In 2020, Cat was recognized by Aerie as a Changemaker for her work with Goddess Council, and it's an absolute joy to host her on Passages today. In this episode, I ask Cat about her definition of wellbeing, her experience leading herself and other women towards nourishing and intentional community, lessons in courage, and the antidote to hustle culture. Cat is a voice of healing I know I, and many others, will need during this year and beyond, bringing inspiration, light, and conversations that matter to women and this world. Buckle up. ------- About Cat: Cat Lantigua is a Dominican-American facilitator and community architect dedicated to building spaces that foster soul-centered conversations and connections. This episode, we sit down with the community architect of Black Christian Influencer's (BCI), Jackie The Educator. Our first predominately faith based conversation is interesting as we talk about the power of people vs followers; the difference between christians, believers, and those who are spiritual; and how reinvention can fuel your purpose when you embrace all that makes you unique while staying in your lane. You'll wish you could chime in for this convo.
Community Architect and founder of Gem Conference, Amanda Cockburn, joins us in this episode to discuss her experience as an in-person events coordinator bringing community online. Everyone tracks some form of data. (We track quite a lot of it if we're rolling with the times.) But amassing data isn't meaningful unless we can create a narrative out of the facts. For example, if you just looked at the cold data of the COVID-19 pandemic, you'd start to feel pretty hopeless, but if the data started to produce fact-based stories, we humans would start to be able to understand it and use it to make decisions. Even greater than comprehending data using narrative is creating community with data. Our guest today is an expert at both, a person who spends most of her time analyzing not just what the data is saying but how it can serve people by connecting customers not just to her company, but to each other. In this episode, I interview Stef Caldwell, the Senior Customer Success Leader and Community Architect at Narrative Science, about customer experience and customer success. What we talked about: - What your data can and can't tell you about your customers - What the relationship is between CS and CX - Why we must scale the human touch in Customer Success - Why to create community around your core beliefs - How Stef founded Manifest to address the missing rung — the first step that carries women into management Check out these resources we mentioned during the podcast: - Manifest - Lululemon - Goal setting with Michael Hyatt - James Clear's Atomic Habits - Charles Duhigg's Power of Habit Subscribe, listen, and rate/review the Customer Experience Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Play, or Google Podcasts, and find more episodes on our blog.
Connect. Rehearse. Record. The CEO and Founder, Richard Anderson, and Community Architect, Kyle McGinnis, of Soundspace join us to share their stories and how Soundspace will evolve Indianapolis’ community of musical artists. You would not suspect that Soundspace was founded by someone who graduated from IUPUI with two degrees in neuroscience and biotechnology. Nonetheless, Richard grew up playing guitar and even spent a semester at Berkley College of Music for classical guitar in addition to his love of science. He continued composing during his time at IUPUI, so when he graduated, he had four years’ worth of songs queued up. To execute his creations, Richard researched building a home studio. He quickly recognized that it was expensive and questioned how he would not only produce but market and possibly create physical copies of his music. That thought led to the idea of Soundspace, a music rehearsal and recording facility that exists to connect people with different skills in the industry. Through mutual friends, Kyle met with Richard to help with marketing in November of 2018 and has since been pursuing a network of artists and partners for Soundspace. Turn up the bass to learn about the resources in Indianapolis’ music community, how the music industry has changed since the creation of streaming, and how Indianapolis can compete with other music cities. Baltimore is one of six US cities now competing for a $30-million federal grant that city planners hope will launch a major redevelopment project in East Baltimore. More than 1,300 public housing units and a school might be demolished in what could eventually be a $1 billion transformation of a 200-acre tract between Harbor East and Johns Hopkins Hospital, in the Perkins-Somerset-Oldtown neighborhoods -- a part of the city long marked by blight, vacancies and violent crime. If the Housing and Urban Development grant is awarded to Baltimore this summer and additional financing can be secured, the project could begin as early as next year. Perkins Homes, a large public housing complex, as well as City Springs Charter Elementary and Middle School, would be torn down as part of this huge project, which calls for the construction of a new City Springs school complex and more than 2500 new housing units. But to what extent could current residents be displaced? And given the history of past redevelopment efforts, could this project lead to more racial segregation and less affordable housing? Melody Simmons is a reporter with the Baltimore Business Journal and a veteran observer of the city’s real estate and development scene who has written several articles on the prospective East Baltimore transformation.Klaus Philipsen is an architect who writes and lectures widely about urban design, city architecture, preservation and transportation issues. Jessica Forde, Yuvi Panda and Chris Holdgraf join Melanie and Mark to discuss Project Jupyter from it’s interactive notebook origin story to the various open source modular projects it’s grown into supporting data research and applications. We dive specifically into JupyterHub using Kubernetes to enable a multi-user server. We also talk about Binder, an interactive development environment that makes work easily reproducible. Jessica Forde Jessica Forde is a Project Jupyter Maintainer with a background in reinforcement learning and Bayesian statistics. At Project Jupyter, she works primarily on JupyterHub, Binder, and JuptyerLab to improve access to scientific computing and scientific research. Her previous open source projects include datamicroscopes, a DARPA-funded Bayesian nonparametrics library in Python, and density, a wireless device data tool at Columbia University. Jessica has also worked as a machine learning researcher and data scientist in a variety of applications including healthcare, energy, and human capital. Yuvi Panda Yuvi Panda is the Project Jupyter Technical Operations Architect in the UC Berkeley Data Sciences Division. He works on making it easy for people who don’t traditionally consider themselves “programmers” to do things with code. He builds tools (e.g., Quarry, PAWS, etc.) to sidestep the list of historical accidents that constitute the “command line tax” that people have to pay before doing productive things with computing. Chris Holdgraf Chris Holdgraf is a is a Project Jupyter Maintainer and Data Science Fellow at the Berkeley Institute for Data Science and a Community Architect at the Data Science Education Program at UC Berkeley. His background is in cognitive and computational neuroscience, where he used predictive models to understand the auditory system in the human brain. He’s interested in the boundary between technology, open-source software, and scientific workflows, as well as creating new pathways for this kind of work in science and the academy. He’s a core member of Project Jupyter, specifically working with JupyterHub and Binder, two open-source projects that make it easier for researchers and educators to do their work in the cloud. He works on these core tools, along with research and educational projects that use these tools at Berkeley and in the broader open science community. In this 25-minute podcast interview, we meet Matthew Coates, the local architect of the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, and learn about the passion he developed for nature and green building from his early childhood. Before “sustainable" was a buzzword; before anyone had thought of "building green," a young Matthew Coates was growing up on a pristine lake in northern Michigan. Over time, as the lake became a popular vacation spot and more people built bigger and bigger houses and brought their motorboats, Matthew saw first-hand the devastating impact of development and pollution on the water and the surrounding woods. Intuitively understanding the fragility of the environment from an early age, he became passionate about protecting the beauty of nature, and embarked upon a career which would allow him to pursue that passion. He has been winning awards for his sustainable designs since graduate school, achieving international acclaim in 2005 by winning the "Cradle to Cradle (C2C)" Home Design Competition for the most sustainable home design of the future. In this interview, Matthew describes in moving terms what it was like growing up on Torch Lake and talks about his deliberate, thoughtful choice to make Bainbridge Island his home, his place of work, and his community. He then goes on to explain that sustainability is about balancing growth with sustaining a community and its culture: it's not just what an architect designs, but where and how structures are placed, and how those structures perform in relation to the environment. Whether designing public buildings or private homes, Matthew¹s commitment to the design of sustainable and responsible architecture in the context of a viable and productive community repeatedly informs his work -- and we can hear his passion for responsible architecture in this podcast.
