Your smartwatch, phone, the earbuds you're listening to this podcast on, or maybe even the electric vehicle you're driving–they all use batteries. The concept of 'Self-Determination' has been largely lost within the field of medical "science". After all, germ theory suggests that an alleged microorganism all of .005 µ in stature can and will wreak havoc on the trillions of cells and indigenous microbes composing the human form, and never mind that there may be an inherent intelligence within Natural Design. Then there's that nasty deck of genetic cards dealt at the moment of conception that holds us forever captive to the sins of our parentage. To top it all off, shit just happens, as our wise medics shake their heads when delivering the bad news that a patient has fallen prey to a "disease" of idiopathic origin. It's difficult for most to imagine the profound shift in consciousness that occurs with the realization that our well-being is an inside job, and nothing 'out there' has the power to determine our state of health unless we succumb to the fear and irrational options made available through Medicine Inc. Tom Cowan MD joins us for a lively discussion on the subject of 'medical determinism', and we can't think of anyone better equipped to guide us through the many fallacies of conventional science. Until his recent retirement from active practice, Dr. Cowan had a general-medical practice, first in upstate New York, then for 17 years in Peterborough, N.H., and for 17 years in San Francisco. He was a founding board member of the Weston A. Price Foundation and currently serves as its vice president. Dr. Cowan continues to actively lecture and interview, sharing information via his website, DrTomCowan.com, where he also offers many of the products he has used personally and in his practice. Additionally, Dr. Cowan offers high-quality beyond-organic vegetable powders and kitchen staples on his DrCowansGarden.com website. Cop mode, black tar CBD, and the USA Tour Help 2015 Facebook group. Patton Magee (The Nude Party, Patton Magee) "For The Nude Party, nearly a decade has flown by in the blink of an eye. In that time, the New York-based band has released a pair of well-received albums, an EP, and played countless shows. Prior to the pandemic, the band was really starting to hit its stride. They had a system in place and were spreading their brand of melodic rock to the masses. In fact, they could count Jack White, Arctic Monkeys, and Orville Peck as vocal supporters, which led to support slots for each. Soon, incredible live appearances at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Newport Folk Festival, and Shaky Knees became the norm. In late 2020, The Nude Party released its sophomore album, Midnight Manor, which debuted at #1 on the Alternative New Artists Album Chart. The sextet was unable to tour behind it and compared its release to skipping a stone over a raging river. A byproduct was that it showed the band that on their third album, they couldn't lean on their tried-and-true method of testing out new material live and then hunker down to record. Instead of sitting around, the band got busy. Setting up shop in their Upstate New York headquarters, the group used the funds they'd saved and spent a year building a studio space out of a barn. Tired of paying for studio time and being rushed, The Nude Party methodically worked at their own pace. Out were the sessions lasting a strict handful of days. In were impromptu writing moments and picking every sound as they went along. When the band met the Tampa based engineer Matthew Horner, they discovered that they had the opposite problems: Matthew had a collection of incredible gear with no studio and The Nude Party had a great new studio with no gear. So they invited him to move his equipment up to the Catskills to record an album together. Such was the origin of the band's third album, Rides On. Unlike their first two albums, The Nude Party decided to produce Rides On themselves. With their new space and the help of Horner, The Nude Party had as much fun creating as they ever had at any other point in their career. The lack of pressure allowed them to record over 20 songs, including some that dabbled in electro-pop and stripped-down country before settling on the final 14 songs. Rides On, the band confidently says, is their best record. It's also the most homegrown and the most organic record The Nude Party has created to date. Working on the album themselves allowed for a democratic process where each band member could take a fuller role in producing the songs they wrote. There was some initial trepidation about there being too many cooks in the kitchen. But as is the benefit of owning your own studio space, time was not a factor. In turn, it allowed for the band's ideas to blossom, everyone's voice be taken into account and create an exciting, collaborative vibe. The relaxed atmosphere of the sessions, and arriving with only loosely structured material, allowed the band to thrive in the studio. It also unleashed a diverse sonic texture compared to their previous releases, as best demonstrated by the title track, “Ride On.” Sonically, the song is reminiscent of Sticky Fingers-era Stones, but its lyrics are mini-vignettes where Magee sings about persevering through adversity. The twangy, blues-drenched licks of the title track, the breezy desert dust encapsulated by the ‘70s infused “Hard Times,” the Shaun Couture-led “Sold Out of Love,” the swinging ‘60s garage vibes of “Cherry Red Boots,” which captures the spirit of what The Nude Party are going for — and showcases their growth as a band. As does expanding the band's sonic palate with a cover of Dr. John's “Somebody Tryin' To Hoodoo Me.” It would have been easy to stick to the New Orleans musician's format, but the band showed off their prowess with their own darker, electric version of the deep cut. The Nude Party coalesced and embraced the spirit of collaboration. They're excited to begin the next chapter of their career. At a time when it would have been easy to pack it in, the band continues to persevere." In July of 1908 the body of twenty-year-old Hazel Drew was found floating in a mill pond in Upstate New York. Her death captured headlines across the nation and around the world, but after a whirlwind investigation lasting less than thirty days (despite a myriad of suspects), the District Attorney abruptly closed the case. Joining me is Jerry Drake, author of "Hazel Was a Good Girl: Solving the Murder that Inspired Twin Peaks". Through meticulous research and new evidence, he focuses on an intriguing, rarely discussed suspect—and a set of circumstances that turn this classic murder mystery on its head. Something strange happened in Upstate New York during the 1830s. This area was called the "Burned-Over District" because so many fiery religious revivals swept through that it was metaphorically burned over. This region became a key source of the Second Great Awakening, a Protestant revival movement marked by emotional preaching and mass conversions, as preachers like Charles Finney inspired thousands to seek personal salvation and social reform. The revival spirit also birthed new movements: Mormonism emerged with Joseph Smith's founding of the Latter Day Saint movement in 1830, the Jehovah’s Witnesses trace their roots to the Bible Student movement that gained traction later in the century, and Spiritualism took hold in the 1840s with the Fox sisters’ claims of communicating with spirits in Hydesville, New York. This episode, however, isn’t just about the Burned-Over District. It’s about how these revivalists tapped into a distinctly American form of power, one not built on title or lineage, but on pure, raw charisma. From Puritan prophets and prophetesses in the 1600s to big-tent revivalists in the 1800s, and even to modern self-help gurus like Tony Robbins and Oprah Winfrey, charisma has shaped influence across time. It empowers figures like presidents Donald Trump and Barack Obama to amass followings, sustain authority, and shape the national narrative through sheer personal appeal. Today’s guest is Molly Worthen, author of Spellbound: How Charisma Shaped American History from the Puritans to Donald Trump. We explore the roots of charisma and power in American democracy, whether it’s necessarily bad or can be used for good, and how to avoid falling under the spell of a charismatic demagogue.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What starts as a childhood game of hide-and-seek in a big Upstate New York house turns into something much darker—phantom touches, ghostly doppelgängers, and glowing figures in vintage clothes are just the beginning. After the caller's brother saw a man and woman floating in the dining room, he stopped sleeping there altogether… and passed away not long after. Then there's the basement: crumbling walls, decades-old gloves, and a strange hole in the stone—where the caller once hid and blacked out entirely. What happens when the drive to succeed masks deep emotional wounds and addiction? In this episode, Jonathan Schwartz shares a powerful and painfully honest account of how his life unraveled. Once one of Hollywood's most trusted financial advisors, Jonathan worked with icons like Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, and Gwyneth Paltrow. On the surface, he had it all. But underneath the success was a secret struggle with gambling and drug addiction that led him to steal millions from the very clients who trusted him most. His fall from grace was dramatic and public, ending in a prison sentence and the loss of everything he had built. But that wasn't the end of his story. Today, Jonathan is sober and rebuilding his life with purpose. As Program Director at Altus Rehab, he now helps others find their own way out of addiction and shame. His story is raw, real, and full of hard-earned wisdom for anyone who has ever felt like they couldn't ask for help. Show Notes: [01:30] Jonathan is a different person from who he was. He grew up in Upstate New York and his father left when he was four. His mom had a lot of stress and took it out on him which created childhood trauma. [03:34] Accounting was the subject that he was good at. [05:02] Eventually, his cousin gave him a job working in Los Angeles for celebrities. [06:33] In 2004, he became a partner in GSO business management. He got a break when Linkin Park was looking for someone in business management. Their success opened up the floodgates. [08:37] He began getting more and more A-list clients. [09:04] In 2010, he became addicted to gambling. [10:01] This eventually led to embezzlement from his celebrity clients. He placed the bet with this bookie everyday for 6 years. [13:48] He ended up embezzling about 7 million dollars. [14:12] When he stopped gambling he had suicidal ideation. [17:05] He always intended to pay the money back. [19:37] Jonathan shares a time when the bank wanted to call Alanis. [21:03] There was a point when his partners started to notice something wasn't right. [22:04] In 2015 he was fired by Alanis, but he continued to give his attention to his A-list clients. [24:42] He didn't want to expose anyone to the fact that he was committing crime. He never told a soul. [25:07] The dark secret was eating him inside, and he also had to deal with his unresolved trauma. [27:12] How Jonathan had to come clean with his wife, because he was scheduled for a lie detector test. [28:48] After failing the test, he was facing 23 years in prison. He negotiated a four to six year plea agreement. [31:14] He ended up being released early because of COVID. [32:11] He struggled to get a job and ended up going back to school, and now he's a marriage and family therapist with an emphasis on addiction and trauma. [34:00] In prison he had the opportunity to reflect on his bad decisions and read a lot of books. [36:33] He's proud to be sober and a nerd. His trauma is resolved, and he gets to help people in treatment not make the same mistakes that he made. [41:34] Celebrities today need to understand not to trust their business manager so quickly and to make sure that they're proactive in their financial affairs and that they're asking for source documents. [42:11] Audit your business manager with some level of frequency. [48:43] Don't go out and spend all your money. Treat your first dollars as your last dollars. [50:56] Jonathan has a book coming out in about 12 months. Thanks for joining us on Easy Prey. Be sure to subscribe to our podcast on iTunes and leave a nice review. Between May 21 and June 16, 1791, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison went on a trip together through Upstate New York and parts of New England on horseback. This "northern journey" came at a moment of tension for the new nation, one in whose founding these Virginians and political allies had played key roles. The Constitution was ratified and President Washington was in his first term of office. Whether the country could overcome regional and political differences and remain unified, however, was still very much in question. Hence why some observers at the time wondered whether this excursion into Federalist New England by the two most prominent southern Democratic-Republicans, both future presidents, had an ulterior motive. Madison, maintained that the journey was for "health, recreation, and curiosity." He and Jefferson needed a break from their public responsibilities, so off they set. Along the way, they took notes on the ravages of the Hessian Fly, an insect that had been devastating wheat crops. While in Vermont, they focused on the sugar maple tree, which many hoped might offer a domestic alternative to slave-grown sugar cane imports. An encounter with a free Black farmer at Fort George resulted in a journal entry that illuminates their attitudes toward slavery and race. A meeting with members of the Unkechaug tribe on Long Island led to a vocabulary project that preoccupied Jefferson for decades, and which remains relevant today. The northern journey was also about friendship. Madison later recalled that the trip made Jefferson and him "immediate companions," solidifying a bond with almost no peer in the annals of American history, one that thrived for fifty years. Jefferson declared at the end of his life, that his friendship with Madison had been "a source of constant happiness" to him. A Journey North: Jefferson, Madison, and the Forging of a Friendship (Oxford University Press, 2025) reveals the moment when it took hold. Louis P. This week, we're revisiting a standout episode from our Best Of series, featuring guests Jenn and Joe Delle Fave.Jenn started out as a middle school English teacher while Joe was stuck working at a car dealership in Upstate New York. Over time, they slowly started chipping away at their real estate goals through the use of creative financing and the rent to own strategy. What started out as a 1 month long trip to Florida turned into them taking 45 days to pack up their lives in New York, sell their primary residence and permanently move down to Florida, where they now homeschool their 2 kids while pursuing their real estate goals in warmer weather. As host of the Creative Finance Playbook Podcast, they help others use creative financing methods to help them achieve their real estate goals by buying rental properties without banks.Follow Jenn & Joe Delle Fave
Today I talk with Madi Johnson. If you don't know her already from STR Book Club and her growing brand, For The Love Of Upstate (FTLOU), you may remember her from episode 96 where we talked about how Madi's favorite deals are "the ones that don't pencil in AirDNA". When we last had her on No Vacancy in February 2024, Madi's idea of going all in on the Upstate NY market was just a gut feeling, but 15 months and 4 live properties later, she has proven her intuition true – this market, and her approach to it, is CRUSHING IT. Some quick stats: FTLOU is outperforming in winter 4x market projections Their summer months are outperforming their own high-end revenue goals by 30-40% Their social media presence has exploded, landing Madi over $18,000 in free furniture for their listings And over $5,000 in sales commission through her affiliate shop Over 600 DMs looking to book FTLOU properties directly I'm also so excited to announce that I'm now working with FTLOU to help find partners for their growing portfolio!!! If you're interested in partnering on our current or next deal, fill out this investor interest form. INVESTOR DINNER SERIES - Austin, TX | Wed, June 25th | 6:30-9pm Apply for our Austin dinner here!

In this thirty-first installment of fictional horror written and narrated by Dan Cummins.... we head to Upstate New York's Woodhull Mountain, where Gabe and Hassan see a very strangely placed house on the side of the hill while out on a hike. When Gabe enters the house, he leaves behind our world, and enters a space outside of it - a dark and mysterious space dedicated mostly... to pain. This episode was scored by Logan Keith.
