Route 66—The Main Street of America— the first continuously paved highway linking east and west was the most traveled and well known road in the US for almost fifty years. From Chicago, through the Ozarks, across Oklahoma, the Texas Panhandle, up the mesas of New Mexico and Arizona, and down into California to the Pacific Ocean. The first road of its kind, it came to represent America's mobility and freedom—inspiring countless stories, songs, and even a TV show.Songwriter Bobby Troup tells the story of his 1946 hit “Get Your Kicks on Route 66.” Mickey Mantle says, “If it hadn't been for US 66 I wouldn't have been a Yankee.” Stirling Silliphant, creator of the TV series “Route 66” talks about the program and its place in American folklore of the 60s.Studs Terkel reads from The Grapes of Wrath about the "Mother Road," and the great 1930s migration along Highway 66. We hear from musicians who recall what life on the road during the 1930s was like for them, including Clarence Love, Woody Guthrie, and Eldin Shamblin, who played guitar for Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. We travel the history of the road from its beginnings through caverns and roadside attractions, into tourist traps and bunko joints, through the hard times of the Dust Bowl, Depression and the “Road of Flight,” and into the “Ghost Road” of the 1980s, as the interstates bypass the businesses and roadside attractions of another era.Produced by The Kitchen Sisters and narrated by actor David Selby. The Kitchen Sisters Present is produced by The Kitchen Sisters (Nikki Silva & Davia Nelson) with Nathan Dalton and Brandi Howell. On Route 66!! I have wanted to do this road trip for so so so long. And one day I will =) In the meantime, here's a great start to the list of attractions you could stop and see, in large cities and small towns, from the Bean in Chicago to a leaning water tower in Texas and all the way to the Santa Monica Pier in California. Pick a reliable vehicle that doesn't mind the heat, and get to driving! What an incredible way to make your way across 2/3 of the US. - Production Note: There was an approximately two-minute internet service interruption during the live broadcast (bummer!) that I did not immediately notice, which means that some of the info is missing. This also caused the episode to be split into two seemingly independent parts. They are not; they're just the before and after the interruption. THIS IS “PART ONE” *Watch this space for how to pick up what was dropped if you're interested. Sorry for the mixup! I love technology, but it can have its quirks. Such is live broadcasting Thanks tons for your patience; so glad you're along for the ride, C ;)

The City of West Hollywood's iconic Halloween Carnaval, one of the most unique Halloween gatherings in the world, returns in 2023. In this episode – we catch up with Liam Lynch – the longtime producer of the event – and learn how the event has evolved over the years, and what party-goers can expect from this amazing once-a-year experience. West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval takes place on the roadway that is also known as California State Route 2 and, even more memorably, it is part of the western stretch of historic Route 66 made famous by the song “(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66” first composed in 1946.
Photojournalist Terrence Moore became enamored with Route 66 while a teen living in California. After graduating from college, he found his way into photojournalism and began traveling extensively across the American West. He has travelled many highways and byways, but his favorite remains the iconic highway that John Steinbeck nicknamed the Mother Road. The author of “66 on 66,” Terry joins Russell and Alan at the ranch to share his adventures.

John Steinbeck called it the “Mother Road.” Songwriter Bobby Troup described it as the route to get your kicks on. And Mickey Mantle said, “If it hadn't been for Highway 66 I never would have been a Yankee.” For the Dust Bowl refugees of the 1930s, for the thousands who migrated after World War II, and for the generations of tourists and vacationers, Route 66 was “the Way West.” Route 66, the first continuously paved highway linking east and west was the most traveled and well known road in America for almost fifty years. From Chicago, it ran through the Ozarks of Missouri, across Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle, up the mesas of New Mexico and Arizona, and down into California to the Pacific Ocean. The first road of its kind, it came to represent America's mobility and freedom—inspiring countless stories, songs, and even a TV show. Songwriter Bobby Troup tells the story of his 1946 hit Get Your Kicks on Route 66; Gladys Cutberth, aka Mrs. 66 and members of the old “66 Association” talk about the early years of the road. Mickey Mantle explains “If it hadn't been for US 66 I wouldn't have been a Yankee.” Stirling Silliphant, creator of the TV series “Route 66” talks about the program and its place in American folklore of the 60s. Studs Terkel reads from “The Grapes of Wrath” and comments on the great 1930s migration along Highway 66. We hear from Black and white musicians including Clarence Love, head of Clarence Love and his Orchestra, Woody Guthrie, and Eldin Shamblin, guitar player for Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys—who remember life on the road for musicians during the 1930s. We travel the history of the road from its beginnings as “The Main Street of America,” through the “Road of Flight” in the 1930s, to the “Ghost Road” of the 1980s, as the interstates bypass the businesses and road side attractions of another era. The five-tool player is usually applied to a baseball player who can hit, hit for power, run, field, and throw, but National Public Radio has applied the term to the legendary entertainer Nat King Cole. Mary McCann wrote that Cole was originator of the guitar/bass/piano trio format, an influential pianist, a barrier-breaker between jazz and popular music, and a multimedia superstar. Songs such as “Straighten Up and Fly Right”, “Nature Boy”, “Get Your Kicks on Route 66,” “Unforgettable” and “The Christmas Song” are the tip-top of a musical legacy we can still enjoy today on CDs, albums, and YouTube. Cole has also been called the Jackie Robinson of television. He has been gone over 50 years, but his music and other accomplishments can still entertain and inspire us today. U.S. Route 66 or U.S. Highway 66 (US 66 or Route 66), also known as the Will Rogers Highway, the Main Street of America or the Mother Road, was one of the original highways in the U.S. Highway System. US 66 was established on November 11, 1926, with road signs erected the following year. The highway, which became one of the most famous roads in the United States, originally ran from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona before terminating in Santa Monica in Los Angeles County, California, covering a total of 2,448 miles (3,940 km). It was recognized in popular culture by both the hit song "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66" and the Route 66 television series, which aired on CBS from 1960 to 1964. In John Steinbeck's classic American novel, The Grapes of Wrath (1939), the road "Highway 66" symbolized escape and loss. US 66 served as a primary route for those who migrated west, especially during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, and the road supported the economies of the communities through which it passed. People doing business along the route became prosperous due to the growing popularity of the highway, and those same people later fought to keep the highway alive in the face of the growing threat of being bypassed by the new Interstate Highway System. US 66 underwent many improvements and realignments over its lifetime, but was officially removed from the United States Highway System in 1985 after it had been replaced in its entirety by segments of the Interstate Highway System. Portions of the road that passed through Illinois, Missouri, New Mexico, and Arizona have been communally designated a National Scenic Byway by the name "Historic Route 66", returning the name to some maps. Several states have adopted significant bypassed sections of the former US 66 into their state road networks as State Route 66. The corridor is also being redeveloped into U.S. Bicycle Route 66, a part of the United States Bicycle Route System that was developed in the 2010s. Chapter 5In this segment of Chapters we have Rick Antonson, Author of "Route 66 Still Kicks: Driving America's Main Street". This travelogue follows Rick and his travel companion Peter along 2,400 miles through eight states from Chicago to Los Angeles as they discover the old Route 66. With surprising and obscure stories about Route 66 personalities like Woody Guthrie, John Steinbeck, Al Capone, Salvador Dali, Dorothea Lange, Cyrus Avery (the Father of Route 66), the Harvey Girls, Mickey Mantle, and Bobby Troup (songwriter of “(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66”), Antonson’s fresh perspective reads like an easy drive down a forgotten road: winding, stopping now and then to mingle with the locals and reminisce about times gone by, and then getting stuck in the mud, sucked into its charms. Rick mixes hilarious anecdotes of happenstance travel with the route’s difficult history, its rise and fall in popularity, and above all, its place in legend. The author has committed part of his book’s proceeds to the preservation work of the National Route 66 Federation.Special Thanks to our Sponsors: Tobacco Motorwear / Shinko Tires / Scorpion Helmets / Wild-Ass Seats / UClear Digital CommunicationsThe Motorcycle Men Support David's Dream and Believe Cancer FoundationThe Gold Star Ride Foundation GET YOUR MOTORCYCLE MEN SHIRTS HERE!!! / Get your Motorcycle Men Neck Gator and Mug here!!Don't forget to get over and check out Ride With Ted over on the Motorcycle Men Channel on YouTube. The Soviet Machines are a three-piece rock band from Minneapolis, Minnesota by high school friends singer/guitarist Jack Swagger and drummer Marcus Jones that initially began in 2006. After two independent releases, the group split up in 2009. In early 2020, the band regrouped with the addition of vocalist/bassist Rich Salsbury and began working on new material. In September, the band traveled to Seattle to work with legendary producer Jack Endino (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Afghan Whigs). The self-titled album that resulted is filled with everything that makes the band great; big guitars, loud roomy drums and infectious melodies. These elements coupled with Endino's live, raw production, and use of first takes gives the record a classic charm and vibrancy missing in most modern albums. The strength of the album was enough to garner the attention of Midwest punk label DC-Jam Records who signed the group less than two weeks after the completion of the album. The LP is out digitally today, and on 12” vinyl on February 12th. Stream The Soviet Machines' debut album here: https://bit.ly/38oXMVd. Todd and Eric did not have a topic predetermined for today, so Todd forced one out of Eric spontaneously. Witness the spectacle of Eric telling of his nocturnal YouTube habits, which spawns into a conversation about Route 66. Warning: There are two instances where Todd goes into "Professor Makes-Things-Up-As-He-Goes"...purely for your enjoyment and NOT for your education. Note: it is honestly a pure coincidence that this episode is the 66th of the season, this was not planned at all. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/todd8/message

COVID-19 continues to drive the conversation, but Gar & Tam take a few different turns as they discuss its latest effects on the new day-to-day "normal" - both the sad and the uplifting. They cover everything from the reality of job loss, the return to life's simple pleasures, the delights of Costco and even the high school experience in the world of Coronavirus. Garrett talks about his beloved dog Raven, and her signs of old age. Tamara raves about her latest read, "Educated," and they discuss the stigmatization of a topic that isn't often discussed - family estrangement. This episode's pop culture review and watch list includes old favorites and new hits alike - Mrs. America, Little Fires Everywhere, Pawn Stars, Judge Judy, The Servant, Bosch, Ozark, Chappelle's Show and the anticipation of Season 2 of Dead to Me on 8th. On this weeks show... Back to the new format. I will be talking about the little things I forgot when I was on my Geocaching hiatus: ICP = Ivy Covered Post. A cache hide I detest and try to avoid. Geocaching with a big format phone in one hand, a bouncy dog on the end of a lead in the other isn't easy. Oh and don't forget the poo bag. I take it back about the quality of the Geocaches out there now. I did a series called Get Your Kicks by Bozzer123, that was well maintained, had some inventive caches and was a decent walk for the dog. #geocachingcreators This shows #geocaching creator is Geocaching Gal, who has been live streaming her finds on Twitch.
