With the Summer of Route 66 in full swing, Gathering Place in Tulsa is celebrating the centennial with a different kind of kicks. The Get Your Kicks shoe art competition pits more than twenty local area artists against each other to see who can create the most appealing work of art from a blank white tennis shoe. The results are quite impressive, and currently on display at Gathering Place's boathouse where viewers can vote on their favorite to win a prize for a lucky artist. The shoes will remain on display through July 18, when the large community park will hold its Route 66 Centennial Celebration. Cheryl Christensen, vice president of operations at Gathering Place, joins the Oklahoma Today Show this week to tell us about how the shoe art competition came together and what we have to look forward to at the park's Route 66 celebration this weekend. Also on this week's show, the editors discuss the best places for families to check out during summer vacation, and podvents tells us about not one, but two Oklahoma peach festivals to visit this week. Route 66—The Main Street of America— the first continuously paved highway linking east and west was the most traveled and well known road in the US for almost fifty years. From Chicago, through the Ozarks, across Oklahoma, the Texas Panhandle, up the mesas of New Mexico and Arizona, and down into California to the Pacific Ocean. Marshall Ulrich is an extreme endurance athlete—ultrarunning icon, Seven Summits mountaineer, and adventure racer— who is considered the “Endurance King” by Outside magazine, and “Superhuman” by Stan Lee. Ulrich's specialty is competing in extreme conditions. He has ascended the Seven Summits, including Mount Everest, all on first attempts; crossed Death Valley (on foot, in July) a record 30 times; and finished more than 131 ultramarathons averaging over 125 miles each. At the age of 57, he broke two transcontinental speed records when he ran 3,063.2 miles in 52.5 days from San Francisco to New York, averaging almost 60 miles per day.​Heather Ulrich is Marshall's wife and serves as the Team Assistant Crew (TAC) for the Stray Dogs. Mary McCann wrote that Cole was originator of the guitar/bass/piano trio format, an influential pianist, a barrier-breaker between jazz and popular music, and a multimedia superstar. Songs such as “Straighten Up and Fly Right”, “Nature Boy”, “Get Your Kicks on Route 66,” “Unforgettable” and “The Christmas Song” are the tip-top of a musical legacy we can still enjoy today on CDs, albums, and YouTube. Cole has also been called the Jackie Robinson of television. He has been gone over 50 years, but his music and other accomplishments can still entertain and inspire us today. The Soviet Machines are a three-piece rock band from Minneapolis, Minnesota by high school friends singer/guitarist Jack Swagger and drummer Marcus Jones that initially began in 2006. After two independent releases, the group split up in 2009. In early 2020, the band regrouped with the addition of vocalist/bassist Rich Salsbury and began working on new material. In September, the band traveled to Seattle to work with legendary producer Jack Endino (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Afghan Whigs). The self-titled album that resulted is filled with everything that makes the band great; big guitars, loud roomy drums and infectious melodies. These elements coupled with Endino's live, raw production, and use of first takes gives the record a classic charm and vibrancy missing in most modern albums. The strength of the album was enough to garner the attention of Midwest punk label DC-Jam Records who signed the group less than two weeks after the completion of the album.
