Giles was 12 when he watched Abba win Eurovision in 1974 and was instantly besotted – and thus required to spend the next 20 years wrestling with The Love That Dare Not Speak Its Name. His thunderingly funny, fond and illuminating book – My My!: Abba Through The Years – traces their story, looks at the snobbery and critical mauling they endured and figures out how they made records so universally popular and which still move him to tears 50 years later. It's also the best example of any book we've read that can explain the mechanics of music to a non-musician. It's highly recommended, as is this podcast which alights upon … … a 50 year-old story – “for 42 of which they haven't existed”. .. the vicious early press reaction - “calculatingly commercial”, “dispassionate” … … the divine clunkiness of their early TV appearances. … the sense of the melancholy we've attached to their music - and why. ... the immense value of splitting up early and never reforming or publicly falling out. … the immaculate construction of Dancing Queen (which opens with the second half of the chorus) and why “there are two types of wedding disco – ones that start with Dancing Queen and terrible ones.” … the maturity of Abba's lyrics – about marriages, relationships, children and other subjects pop music rarely tackles. … why Abba Voyage is so affecting that he's seen it three times. … and Muriel's Wedding, Priscilla Queen of the Desert and other key factors in The Comeback. Hello & welcome to Episode 11 of the Sustainable eCommerce Podcast, the show dedicated to helping your brand grow sustainably. Full show notes & links here: https://sustainable-ecom.com/ep11 I'm your host, Giles Smith – and on today's I'm joined by another amazing Aussie entrepreneur. Austin Simms is the founder of Dayrize, a software platform revolutionizing our ability as brand owners to assess the sustainability of the products we build. If you're making sustainable products and can't justify the huge expense of a full life cycle assessment, then this show is for you! The Dayrize platform makes it easier to improve products, easier to benchmark their all round sustainability, helps customers make better buying decisions, and provided independent scientific validation to help brands tell their incredible brand stories. Unlike the incredibly expensive and cumbersome lifecycle assessment approach, the Dayrize system is fast, very cost effective.
Swimming has a diversity problem, so we spent some time getting Giles's perspective on how to bring the black and brown communities into swimming, addressing pool access and water safety, while also hearing about the historical swimmers of color that have inspired Giles and countless others to dream. Giles is proof that sports don’t have to define you – he works in real estate, but he’s found the harmony to get the best out of both aspects of his professional life. Of course, we get in deep on butterfly technique and training, and also some race strategies he’s working on like going no breath at the end of the 100 fly long-course. After a couple years of retirement, Giles is back swimming at the top of his game and doing it with a refreshingly peaceful and positive attitude that will surely leave an indelible mark on the young swimmers he’s inspiring. Hope you enjoy. Here’s our chat with Giles Smith.

Richard first became interested in the electronic scene in his teenage years, starting up Jaunt> after becoming disheartened with the lack of progressive and forward thinking nights in his area. With a musical taste ranging from the rolling sounds of deep house and techno to disco and straight up house, it’s fair to say his eclectic take on sound is apparent in his energetic and crowd pleasing sets. Ever since seeing the legendary Matthew Dear smash DC10’s dance floor back in 2007, Richard has been seeking out the more educated sounds of the underground scene and developing his own talents tenfold. Through Jaunt> he has already held the DJ booth fort alongside the likes of Giles Smith, Dyed Soundorom, Miss Fitz and Dorian Paic, adding ever more to his breadth of musical knowledge and untold passion for the DJ scene. And these stellar gigs have already led to separate bookings everywhere from Leeds to London to Ibiza for longstanding nights including Back to Basics, We Love... Space, and via world-class venues such as Digital and Privilege. Unrivalled experience and success at such a young age can only be admired, and as Richard’s individual music career progresses it’s likely you’ll be hearing a lot more from himself and the now unstoppable Jaunt> movement.
