This Redcast is about the late, great Belfast Celtic. Gone but most definitely not forgotten. Celtic were founded in 1891, a few years after Glasgow Celtic and with a sense of responsibility to imitate their counterparts in “style, play and charity.” We talk to our friend and comrade Jack Duffin about the history of the club and their importance to the nationalist community in the North of Ireland, to Irish football, and of course about the interaction off that football with the politics; more about the politics in part 2 of the cast. Jack is a Belfast historian, political activist, former member of the Official IRA and football fan with a uniquely knowledgeable perspective on the history of the Six counties. In 1896 they were admitted to the Irish league, in 1900 they won that league for the first and by the means the only time. Now, Celtic were always the team of the nationalist community in Belfast and Celtic Park was in the heart of Catholic West Belfast but the club was not sectarian, many of the club's famous players were Protestants as was the most successful manager Elisha Scott, and Protestants consistently formed a good 10% of the club's support. Like most things, the history of the North of Ireland is more complicated than it looks. However, the club's support was overwhelmingly Catholic and in 1912 the turbulent politics in the Northern counties lay behind some serious violence at a match against Linfield. The Great war ended formally in 1919 but hostilities certainly didn't cease in the North of Ireland. In 1920, Celtic was forced to abandon their participation in the 1920–21 season, and did not rejoin the league until 1924–25 season. The return was triumphant with Celtic winning the league 4 times in a row between 1925 and 1926. Celtic were champions on 6 more occasions in the 1930s and also in the 1947/48 and 1948/49 seasons. Then it was pretty much all over. The spark for the end of the club came on 26 December 1948, at the traditional Boxing Day league game between Linfield and Celtic at Windsor Park. Celtic were winning for most of the match but Linfield equalised in the final minute. Linfield fans, high on adrenaline and sectatianism invaded the pitch and began attacking several Celtic players, including centre-forward Jimmy Jones, a protestant, who suffered a broken leg and was kicked unconscious. Celtic felt the response from the police and Irish Football Association was wholly inadequate. The team's management met on the night of the match and decided that the club had no option other than to withdraw entirely from the league after the end of the 1949 season. In a 2011 profile, The Guardian spoke with Celtic fan Jimmy Overend, then 86, about the void left by the team's exit: those of us who never saw the club but were brought up with tales of its legendary prowess, what it meant to the community and the tragedy of its demise, can feel his words: "It was like a black cloud coming down, as if there was nothing to live for or look forward to on a Saturday. It's a grief which never went away." http://www.belfastceltic.org/history/index.html Fine site with a lot of information on the club. http://coiste.ie The tour company that Jack works for in Belfast, highly recommended.

........Martin O'Neill, a Gaelic footballer from Kilrea becomes the Manager of Glasgow Celtic and achieves legendary status!
The 9iar Chronicles - Season 1965-66 This current period we are hoping to achieve the magical 10+ in a row and eclipse the 9 in a row done by another Glasgow team through the 1990s. Biu of course they were not the first club to achieve that level of success. The first Scottish team to win 9iar were the magical Glasgow Celtic, managed by the incredible Jock Stein and the first season in that run was 1965-66. Celtic has been in the wilderness of the Scottish game prior to the return of Jock as manager in the spring of 1965 and this season marked his first full season back at the club as manager and the first season which saw major successes finally come Celtic's way. The clear difference in the performance of Celtic prior to this season and hereafterwards was the role of Jock Stein as manager. He drove the club and the players to new heights. It was not so much that the players were different before and after his arrival (discussed in the previous season review). It was more that the training and direction given by a peerless manager and tactician of great skill inspired better performance and a team sense that meant the difference between losing games and toughing them out; between drawing and getting the odd goal in a win; between fighting back when under the hammer. Stein was a supreme preparer for games and a master tactician with a plan for every game and the ability to read a game and where things needed to be changed. Furthermore he believed that the team should prepare properly. Every player knew what was required of him. Every player knew how to play and every player was aware of the importance of his teammates and where they would be. Practise and fitness were all part and parcel of delivering that performance and as Jock Stein was very much a tracksuit manager, he believed that he AND the trainer trained the team - not just the trainer. Having emphatically enforced that he and he alone picked the team to the Board, he made sure that the team were prepared and that the team that he picked was the right one. Furthermore players were now meant to be practised professionals. Full backs were encouraged to overlap; forward lines were to be seen as fluid and interchangeable; outside forwards were meant to get forward and cross and wing halfs controlled the game's flow. There is no doubt that Jock Stein's presence turned the club around. Many might argue that it was the players that did this - but of this season's players, only Joe McBride was directly acquired by him. All of the others were already at the club when he arrived. That alone marks the importance of Jock Stein to Celtic. The players were there - all they needed was pulling together and direction to become what would go on next season to become the Lisbon Lions. The League title was a nip and tuck affair right from the off and was not decided fully till the last game of the League. It saw Celtic taake the flag from Rangers by 2 points only dropping one point at home and losing four games away. But it was not so much the numbers that added up but the performances throughout the season in the League. This was a team that did not take losing lying down - and that was a BIG change. There were still occasions when they could miss the target and have shot after shot sail past the goal, but these were rare and noteable when they occurred. All the commentators from the time said not only how strong the team were but also how fit and keen they were to win. This season was the first that this team had really and truly played together inspired by a great manager. Next season would be something else! Thanks to The Celtic Wiki for the preview text - enjoy the podcast.

‘Sunshine On Leith- Hibernian F.C ’ broadcasts on Newstalk 106-108fm on Sunday the 8th March at 7am Saturday 14th March at 9pm. Podcast goes live after the first broadcast. Leith is a now gentrified part of Edinburgh with a unique identity. So much so that its old inhabitants refer to themselves as Leithers and deny they are from Edinburgh. It was once a mix of Catholic, Protestants, Scots and Irish and was also were the first Irish football team was founded, Hibernian FC. In ‘Sunshine On Leith- Hibernian F.C, producer Brian Kenny travels to Edinburgh to unravel the complex story of Hibernian which crosses religion, politics and football. Then we hear from fans, sociologists, historian and Leithers in the same week that Hibs are due to play Celtic the most notorious of Irish clubs in Scotland. However how unbeknownst to most Irish people it was not Celtic that first wore the green rather Hibernian football club of Edinburgh. Although nowadays it is their Glasgow rivals Celtic that are most well-known for their Irish identity it was indeed Hibernian or Hibs as they are more commonly known that first created a football club for Irish immigrants to Scotland to call home. The documentary explores a time when Irish people were flooding to Scotland for work and Irish Catholics were not always welcome. In Glasgow where industry was booming the Irish found jobs and settled in larger numbers whilst in the neighbouring city of Edinburgh jobs suitable for the Irish immigrants were less plentiful. Many of them settled in an area of Leith which had a unique identity separate entirely from that of Edinburgh. Historian Martin Mitchell tells us how Catholic identity of the new arrivals caused tension and amidst the staunch protestant communities there were protests when they Irish tried to set up their first church, many believed there was nowhere for them to go so they started their own football club Hibernian F.C. Michael Rosie a sociologist and fan of Hibs biggest rivals Hearts details how the club had hue initial success and attracted Irish from all over Scotland including Glasgow. However shortly after Hibs won the Scottish cup in 1887 and held a victory parade in Glasgow, Glasgow Celtic was formed and Hibernian was no longer the go to place for Irish immigrants to Scotland. We hear how they myth that Hibernian and their closest rivals Hearts mirror the situation of Celtic and Rangers. Fans tell us that it’s a rivalry based on the side of the city you were born nor whether you are Catholic or Protestant. In a shop outside the stadium we talk to fans of both clubs who distance themselves from the sectarianism that can often be associated with Celtic and Rangers. Host Gareth Fullerton is once again joined by regular pundit Tim McCann for our 10th episode. And our special guest for the milestone show was none other than former Cliftonville and Crusaders striker Diarmuid O'Carroll. Diarmuid won four league titles on the bounce - two with the Reds and another two with the Crues. He also enjoyed spells with clubs including Glenavon and Glasgow Celtic. The lads reflect on Diarmuid's career - including a great story about Roy Keane at Celtic - and also get the former striker to pick a Dream Team out of the players he played with at Cliftonville and Crusaders. And believe it when we say it, this is some team! The lads also reflect on the past week's action in the Premiership and League Cup, and look ahead to this weekend's games. We also have our Charity Bet courtesy of our friends at BetMcLean, with all winnings going to our chosen charity the Children's Heartbeat Trust.
Dave is joined by NI football author Ben Roberts and Celtic blogger and podcaster John Reid to discuss this weeks potential powder-keg tie in the UCL between Linfield of Belfast and Glasgow Celtic.
So it goes. Glasgow Celtic are into the final of the 2017 Scottish Cup final, and in turn, delaying this episode because of the celebrations. The History Bhoys Abroad present episode #27: season 07/08. We discuss the players' performances, Strachan's style, the transfer windows, the turning points, why this season was so special and much more. A typical big HBA blether. Again, Celtic are into the final. This could be a very special season. Thanks to everyone for ALL their Twitter feedback which we never had time to share (we'll make up for it on the next episode) and also we want to wish the Statue For Bobby Lennox campaign all the best. They can be found on Twitter @bobbylennox67. Join us.

Welcome to the House of Crouse. “How to Train Your Dragon” star Jay Baruchel stops by the HoC to chat up his new documentary “Celtic Soul.” The film features Baruchel and sports broadcaster Eoin O’Callaghan, who met via twitter and a shared love of Glasgow Celtic. After two years of chatting 140 characters at a time the pair became friends when O’Callaghan came to Montreal to visit the actor. That turned into the first leg of a journey that would take them from Quebec’s Bell Centre, home ice of the Canadiens, to Dublin’s Croke Park, one of Europe’s largest sports stadiums where they try hurling, a forerunner to hockey. They travel two continents and three countries to make it to see a match in paradise a.k.a. Celtic Park and Jay and Eoin tell the whole story on the show this week. It's a great story. C'mon in, sit a spell and enjoy.
This week on What's the Story we take a little trip to one of Ireland's most famous places, Carrigstown, as we get an inside look at a basketball rivalry that makes The Chicago Bulls v The New York Knicks look like a tea party. The Ballybrack Bulls v The Carrigstown Condors. We're joined by RTE's Fair City star Steve Gunn (Dan Keating of The Condors) who tells us about life on both sides of the camera and his days before landing his gig with the award winning serial drama. From taxi driving to busking, selling cash registers to working in a German circus, there's not a lot Steve hasn't tried - including tap dancing. We also had Irish Wheelchair Association Sport Development Officer, Mark Barry, along with us to tell us about the storyline on Fair City which involves Steve and of course our very own Graham Merrigan. Mark dishes the dirt on Mero and also tells us about his own journey from competing at the Barcelona 92 Paralympic Games to going on a J1 to Alaska and everything in between. As usual the lads discuss everything and anything including smelly Glasgow Celtic fans, the Rugby World Cup, Robert Durst The Jinx and loads more besides. As always rate, review, subscribe and let us know what you think! You can check out all our previous chapters on iTunes or any podcast app for android, just search WTSpod.
This week the Aborigine Australian Rules star Adam Goodes, decided against walking away from the game he loves, having endured weeks of racial abuse at the hands of some opposing fans. It’s not the first time that the sport has been at the forefront of the countries debate on integration. In 1993, whilst playing for St Kilda, Nicky Winmar responded to similar racial abuse by raising his shirt and pointing to his skin. The photograph is an iconic image in Australian sporting history. But has anything really changed in those 22 years? Don’t Ban Drugs… Embrace Them! With more allegations and strenuous denials dominating the world of athletics, we ask if sport would be better off if performance enhancing drugs were regulated, as opposed to banned. Remembering Natalia Natalia Molchanova, widely regarded as the greatest free diver in history is feared to have died diving off the coast of Spain. We speak to William Truebridge, the current world champion and double world record holder, about Natalia’s life and legacy. Somali Surfs Up! For Kite Surfers there are few better places to practice the sport than the east coast of Africa, unfortunately there are few places more dangerous. We hear from Denmark’s Jacob Sorensen who is in the middle of attempting to kite surf over 1000km of the African east coast including parts of Somali and all the dangers that brings. Is Football Failing Fans? As the new English Premier League season begins we look at a new survey on accessibility and why some of the biggest clubs in world football are failing it’s disabled fans. Sporting Witness… Goes back to the summer of 1989 and one of the most controversial signings of all time - a deal that would rock the world of Scottish football. The day former Glasgow Celtic hero Mo Johnston signed for their bitter cross-city rivals, Rangers. Why would anyone not be excited about going to watch Celtic at the moment? Bombing on full backs, pace speed, ability - even centre halves scoring goals by playing a 1-2 in the opposition 6 yard box. To quote Chris Tarrant on TISWAS - This Is What They Want! Yes, this is sexy football. Ronny Deila is bringing sexy back to Celtic Park! This week Mark Cameron joins Harry to discuss attacking football being played the Glasgow Celtic way and Dundee Utd leaving the boot in. That's right, we review the latest instalment in the Celtic v Dundee Utd saga and discuss how enjoyable supporting Celtic is. The enjoyment of supporting a great team on the park is only added to by knowing that Celtic are a club like no other and Mark talks about his work with the Celtic FC Foundation. The two contributors are on twitter; @Leftiebhoy @Harrybradycu Enjoy

Episode Nine 1980-1990 "A Great Party with a Terrible Hangover" In Chapter Nine we are joined by Douglas Beattie, well known Celtic author of "Happy Birthday Dear Celtic". We cover the period 1980 to 1990 when the Club enjoys a roller coaster ride of great successes and tragic failures. Relive the excitement of the decade on and off the field as we start with a Cup final victory against Rangers and end with another. The Hampden "riot" game and the Joe Miller Cup final nicely book-end ten years of romance for the Glasgow club. Who can forget the epic European games against Real Madrid, Ajax and Rapid Vienna while the club fight hard domestically to keep up with the upcoming "New Firm" of Aberdeen and Dundee United. Towards the end of the decade Scottish Football sees dramatic changes as Rangers finally get their act together and challenge everyone with their new regime but even they were unable to stop the Glory, Glory Bhoys from winning a double in their Centenary Year. We have Tales from the Wiki, the History of the Stadium, the History of the Celtic Shirt, eyewitness accounts from Anton Rogan, George McCluskey and Frank McAvennie as well as all your Fan Stories and Confessions. Paul Cuddihy also joins us with the history of the Celtic View and we pay homage to Tommy Burns who “Played for a People and a Cause” As our Ninth guest, Douglas nominates The Kano Foundation as the nominated charity and you can learn more about them at http://www.thekanofoundation.com/index.php We are asking everyone that downloads the podcast to donate one pound, fifty pence or even a fiver for the episode, but really anything you can afford will be greatly appreciated and ALL monies raised will be given to the ten worthy charities at the end of the series. "Making A Stand" In this Sixth episode we are joined by Paul Brennan from the Celtic Quick News to cover the period 1950 to 1960. With World War Two over, Scotland wasn't the land of milk and honey as promised, but a country still struggling with rebuilding and rationing. Celtic were rebuilding too and enjoyed a relatively successful period by clinching a double, the Coronation Cup and destroying Rangers 7-1 in the League Cup final of 1957. At first glance this sounds like success but the 1950's promised so much more and the trophy haul was a poor reflection on a team with great talent yet poor leadership. Off the pitch the Club were faced with some of its biggest challenges since its birth in 1887 as the fundamentals of the club's identity came under attack from the authorities. Things came to breaking point and a stand had to be made and thankfully for once the hierarchy of the Club stuck to their principals and stood firm. Despite these distractions the building blocks were being laid for a team that would go onto better things in the years to come. A man named Stein is signed and the blueprint for success was starting to be drawn up. There is also the History of the Stadium, History of the Celtic Shirt, interviews with players of the time, all your Fan Stories, Confessions and much, much more. As our Sixth guest, Paul nominates The CLIC Sargent Children's Cancer organization as the nominated charity and you can learn more about them at http://www.clicsargent.org.uk/ We are asking everyone that downloads the podcast to donate one pound, fifty pence or even a fiver for the episode, but really anything you can afford will be greatly appreciated and ALL monies raised will be given to the ten worthy charities at the end of the series. Episode Three "Improvisation and Inspiration" In this third episode we are joined by Paul Larkin to cover the period 1920 to 1930 in a decade where Celtic are up against the rising force of Rangers. Still, a haul of 13 trophies in ten years wasn’t a bad return for a team blessed with the talents of McGrory, Gallagher, Cassidy, Cringan, McNally and McLean. The war is now over and recession is kicking in as Celtic play in an era building up to the General Strike of 1926. The poor of Glasgow’s East End turn to the emerging Labour Party and the rise of Red Clydeside as the streets are carved up by vicious gangs with violence and social unrest a common occurrence. Add to this the political changes and armed warfare going on in Ireland, the fans of Celtic cling onto their love of their team despite the challenges at the time. There is also the History of the Stadium, History of the Celtic Shirt and all your Fan Stories and Confessions. Episode Two "Freedom and Liberation" In this second episode we are joined by Harry Brady from Celtic Underground to cover the period 1900 to 1920 and it’s not long before we are discussing conspiracy theories against the Club even back in those early days. On the pitch, however, things really start to get exciting as Celtic won six league titles in a row between 1904/05 and 1909/10 and even won every competition they entered in 1907-08. We learn about the introduction of the hoops and reason behind the dreaded term “Old Firm”. Bennet, McMenemy, Quinn, Somers and Hamilton were the deadliest front line in Scottish football of the period, but it wasn’t long before it was a different front line that was come to the fore as we chat about Celtic in the First World War and all the social unrest in Glasgow both during this time and shortly after its conclusion There is also the History of the Stadium, History of the Celtic Shirt and all your Fan Stories and Confessions. In this second episode we are joined by Harry Brady from Celtic Underground to cover the period 1900 to 1920 and it’s not long before we are discussing conspiracy theories against the Club even back in those early days. On the pitch, however, things really start to get exciting as Celtic won six league titles in a row between 1904/05 and 1909/10 and even won every competition they entered in 1907-08. We learn about the introduction of the hoops and reason behind the dreaded term “Old Firm”. Episode One "From Desperation to Celebration" In this inaugural episode we are joined by Jim Blythe and Paul McQuade from the Celtic Graves Society to cover the period 1887 to 1900. We chat about the formation of the Club, the opening of the first stadium and the creation of the team. All this is set against the backdrop of the desperation of the new Irish immigrant who continued to struggle to find a place socially in the Glasgow of the 1890s. As the decade wore on, the local population in the East of the City finally had something to cheer about and be proud of. Listen to Jim and Paul explain the boardroom battles of the time that makes the 1994 takeover sound like a tea party as the Club develops the first stages of professionalism. However it was on the pitch where the most significant progress was made as the first heroes to wear the hoops started to emerge. Names like James Kelly, Johnny Campbell, Sandy McMahon and “The Wild Rover” himself, Dan Doyle rolled off the tongues of the ever growing army of Celtic fans and we look back at a team that won a total of 15 major trophies in those first twelve years. As our first guests, Jim and Paul nominate the first charity that will benefit from this series and that will be Archdiocese of Glasgow Arts Project. We are asking everyone that downloads the podcast to donate one pound, fifty pence or even a fiver for the episode, but really anything you can afford will be greatly appreciated and ALL monies raised will be given to the ten worthy charities at the end of the series.
