We love a good story. From the earliest years of our development, we're captivated by fairy tales and storybooks, and as we grow older, we regularly come back to movies and TV shows that once captured our imagination and interest. The good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ is itself a story, summarized in one of the most well-known verses in all of Scripture, John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” We love hearing stories, telling stories, reading stories, and it's this love of story that Jesus capitalized on as he taught throughout his earthly ministry in parables. As one author wrote: “The parables are like hand grenades. Jesus took them out and set them before his hearers. Then...he pulled the pin out. Listen carefully because the parable explodes. If you miss the blast of the story, you have missed the power of the parable.” Jesus' parables open our minds and hearts to hear and receive the profound truths of the kingdom of heaven. Through this series we'll look at ten of these stories to grow in our walk with Christ. May the Lord explode our hearts and our minds as the simple stories of Jesus change everything for us. This 10-week series will be taught by four different preachers from our staff and membership through the summer with the specific parables chosen through the survey you completed in the spring. Have you ever felt like you are constantly striving for something that is never quite good enough? Or maybe you just feel like you're always falling a little short? If so, then this episode might be especially for you. This week's common struggle is perfectionism. Whether we can see it in small areas or all throughout our lives, perfectionism can quickly become exhausting, exacting and exasperating! The “do it all” mentality of many perfectionists often leads to positive feedback from others, but all the praise can easily hide our underlying motives to the point that we can become unaware of the shame beneath our striving. Throughout this episode Alex walks us through her own journey with perfectionism and how the gospel provides freedom from the many things that can drive the perfectionism in all of us. What does it mean to be a True Disciple of Christ or living a life of Discipleship? How can we truly put one of the greatest commandments in the Bible, "Love thy neighbor as thyself" into practice?Tune in to this week's What's the Story where Caesar Kalinowski shares his journey of finding his true identity, making discipleship a lifestyle, and more! Here's a summary of this week's story:Marriage: Caesar shares how his marriage of 35 years came to be. He and his wife Tina both came from broken families but met in High School and eventually got married, not knowing anything about it. But today they have three grown kids who are their best friends, and four grandchildren.Becoming a Christian: Caesar and Tina were raised in different religions but both had a similar understanding of Christianity before they met. After Tina was invited to a church retreat by her coworker, she realized that what she knew about Christianity was not the whole story. Both of them gave their lives to Jesus that night and have been growing in their faith ever since.Life of Discipleship: Caesar became interested in discipleship while doing international travel for ministry work. He noticed that the people he encountered who had nothing were full of joy, and he wanted to have what they had. He then moved out to Tacoma with his family and started living this way. The communities multiplied as people started to understand and walk with Jesus. To start living this discipleship lifestyle, he recommends starting with family dinner nights, where everyone helps cook the meal. From there, he suggests moving on to open table nights, where anyone can come and they're treated like family instead of guests. As people get more comfortable, organic connections will begin to happen naturally.Challenges: Caesar shares how people are messy and how it can be difficult to maintain relationships, especially when helping people who are addicted or homeless. The kids sometimes get overwhelmed with all of the people, so they have family nights where only Team K is allowed.Identity in Christ: Learning about Identity has been a big thing for Caesar. We are all created in God's image. This means that our value and worth come from who we are, not from what we do. And if we see others as image bearers of God, it changes the way we treat them and engage with them.ABOUT CAESAR:Caesar Kalinowski is a father, recent grandpa, and has been married to his high school sweetheart, Tina, for over 35 years. This is the sixth message in our series, “The Beatitudes: Jesus' Invitation To The Good Life.” Pastor JR shares with us what mercy is, how do we learn it, and what is the promise. Sermon Text: Matthew 5:1-7 Sermon Notes: What Is Mercy? How Do We Learn Mercy? “Like nothing else could ever do, the gospel instills in me a heart for the downcast, the poverty-stricken, and those in need of physical mercies, especially when such persons are of the household of faith. When I see persons who are materially poor, I instantly feel a kinship with them, for they are physically what I was spiritually when my heart was closed to Christ. Perhaps some of them are in their condition because of sin, but so was I. Perhaps they are unkind when I try to help them; but I, too, have been spiteful to God when He has sought to help me. Perhaps they are thankless and even abuse the kindness I show them, but how many times have I been thankless and used what God has given me to serve selfish ends? The gospel reminds me daily of the spiritual poverty into which I was born and also of the staggering generosity of Christ towards me. Such reminders instill in me both a felt connection to the poor and a desire to show them the same generosity that has been lavished on me. When ministering to the poor with these motivations, I not only preach the gospel to them through word and deed, but I reenact the gospel to my own benefit as well.” A Gospel Primer for Christians by Milton Vincent. What Is The Promise? How we experience God treating us is the way we will treat others; but how we treat others is also how we will experience God treating us.
The guys talk about the lost art of Christians reading good books. It seems that, given the pace and availability of media, the new generation of young people reads less than previous generations. Instead, they look to “YouTube University,” which offers information but does grow you in wisdom. These algorithms are designed to show you what you want to see and offer what's clickable. Good books, on the other hand, offer wisdom. No doubt reading books comes with its fair share of challenges. People have different natural inclinations toward reading (and some, though not all, even experience major changes in this area when converted). People differ in their reading capacities, such as speed of reading and memory for content. Some struggle with things like dyslexia that make reading more difficult. But anyone can put their mind to gaining wisdom through books, and the more you read, the more you build up the muscle for reading. If you have a hard time with reading, the guys urge, start by committing to one book and seeking accountability as you read it. He shaped us to read, and designed us to reap many benefits from doing so - the foremost of which is gaining knowledge of Him by reading His written Self-revelation in the Bible. We should read varied books, from biography to theology and fiction, but we need to make sure the book we live in is the Bible. The guys leave listeners with a list of recommendations for either personal or shared reading: Everything Sad is Untrue, The Discipline of Grace, Gospel Primer, New Morning Mercies, Basic Christianity, Knowing God, The Prodigal God, The Chronicles of Narnia, Lectures to My Students, and The Mystery. Be watching out, too, for E.Z.'s forthcoming book, Fight Like a Man, and a great resource for teaching kids: Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons!
After diving in with Olympic games and a chicken leg hopping competition, the group turns to the topic for today's episode: freedom from condemnation, that is, how to walk in God's grace. The guys have spoken a number of times before about the issue of false conversion, but on the other side of the coin is the problem of a true Christian laboring under a sense of condemnation and struggling with eternal security. This experience is all too common, weighing down Christians and keeping them from experiencing the freedom that is theirs in the gospel. The voice of condemnation is founded on a quid-pro-quo foundation, and aligns with the human impulse to focus on performance. Conversely, the gospel declares the grace of God in Christ, that is, His unmerited favor. And how otherly this grace is! God saves not because of our works, but simply because He decides to save. He redeems not because He sees something lovely; rather, He redeems first, and only then is something lovely created in us. The gospel of grace must be central to the life of the Christian, and it is the antidote to condemnation. Meditating on the gospel is crucial if we are to apply it in all areas of life, including to the experience of sin and the pressures of condemnation and fear. The gospel of grace shows us that, though we will inevitably sin and struggle, Christ died for our sins and we are free - even time after time - to draw near to God in full assurance that He will draw near to us. In light of the gospel, we see that God loves us as our Father, and corrects us in love rather than punishing us in wrath. Stories of David, Jonah, the Prodigal Son, Peter, and so many more show us how God loves us and gives grace, and call us to always respond to our sin by getting up, receiving God's grace, and moving forward. Even as we pursue righteousness, we do so from a place of sure acceptance before God and celebration of His kindness to us. And ultimately, we foster humility by turning from our own sin to our gracious God; we honor God when we take Him at His word, and when we view ourselves as He views us! Thanks for listening! Leadership within the Church is so much more than just tasks and jobs getting done. Biblical leadership does get things done and serve the Family, but effectiveness as leaders is so much more about character, their hearts, and a growing ability to speak and model the Gospel in all of life. In this episode, Caesar gives you 5 ongoing essentials that every missional leader needs in their life. Unfortunately, almost no one was trained for the type of leadership that missional communities require. Let's be the ones that change that! In This Episode You'll Learn: Why the commitment to developing leaders attracts great leaders. What to do if YOU are not getting these 5 essentials as a leader. Moving a missional community toward multiplication is a lot like preparing your kids to move out of the house and start a life with families of their own. Done well, it takes a great level of intentionality on the leaders' parts and does not happen accidentally. In this episode, Caesar walks you through a recent planning session he did with church leaders as they prepare for the multiplication of their groups and the starting of a new missional community at the same time. In This Episode You'll Learn: The best time to start preparing your community for multiplication. Necessary steps to get your people on board for growth. Why every leader needs an apprentice. How the Gospel implicates us toward multiplication. https://everydaydisciple.com/subscribe (Get started here…) https://everydaydisciple.com/358 () From this episode: “The right time to start the preparation to multiply your missional community is when you're first starting it! A missional community is not a “holy huddle”, renamed small group or Bible study. Your goal is to live increasingly like a family, together on mission. Today we're discussing with a dear brother, Matt Brock on the topic of abortion. Matt shares wisdom on how to respond to pro-choice assertions. We address the hypocrisy of those that say “Black Lives Matter” until it involves a black life in the womb. We also discuss the history behind planned parenthood, and the outcome for the black population if the trajectory of the abortion murder rate does not change. Matt also blesses us with his testimony and the Gospel! Ephesians 2:11-22 talks about the reconciliation of the Saints into one body, and into God's family. As we talk about rehearsing the truth's of the gospel, I believe focusing on 'our Inheritance with the Saints', is a very practical and helpful aspect of the gospel to remember.
We continue our look at the book 'A Gospel Primer' by Milton Vincent. We fight a daily battle, one that is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces - that is why our daily protection that gospel offers is so important. We also talk about resting in Christ's righteousness rather than in our own...join in as we continue to talk about ways that the gospel informs and can encourage our daily lives.
Let's take the next couple of weeks to talk about a book called "A Gospel Primer" by Milton Vincent, where we will learn helpful hints on how to rehearse and preach the gospel to ourselves everyday. This week we'll talk about one way to meditate on the Gospel, and how it is called in scripture, "God's Power". Get the book and follow along with me and I highlight some of my favorites that he teaches, or listen in for the next 3-4 weeks.
Cross Radio Episode 39 | TDN Chapter 3: The Holiness of God “Ignorance of the distinction between the Law and Gospel is one of the principal sources of all abuses which corrupt and still corrupt Christianity.” - Theodore Beza There is a difference between Law and Gospel. And there's no other antidote to knowing the distinction than to go back to the holiness of God. When Holiness demands our very lives through the LAW, Holiness itself provided it for us - in Christ. Law is do, do, do. Gospel is “done” - Christ Himself accomplished everything for the salvation of His own. We need to understand the difference. A look on God's Holiness provides for us answers seeing that we can never Do something to merit His favor because His standards is HOLY HOLY HOLY. We need someone Holy, someone who can represent both God and humanity to save us. On the third chapter of our DISCIPLE'S NOTEBOOK, we go into the Gospel Primer focusing on God's holiness. We live in an era when the world has less or no regard to the Holiness of God and abuse or misuse the “Love of God”. That is why we find ourselves distorting the gospel message. That we have fallen short of God's glorious and holy decrees. It is this very God, with His glorious and holy character who provides a way for us: what He demanded, He Himself provided. Thus, the gospel. ___________________ Click, Like and Follow Updates on Cross Radio's Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/TwisterJoverPh/ ___________________ This is the second chapter of our Discipleship Series entitled “The Discipleship Notebook” #CrossRadioPh #TheDisciplesNotebook3 [CrossRadio S01E39] Solus Christos. _____________

March 23, 2020 | During our first episode, we talked about the Content of the Gospel - the glad tidings about the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and how this message is “of first importance”. Paul clearly proclaimed the truth that he was not ashamed of this message, although this is foolishnss to the Greeks or a stumbling block to Jews. We are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. Part-2 talks about the “context of the gospel” (The Gospel Primer and the Gospel Proper) giving us a clarified understanding why the gospel is of first importance and in understanding it would clarify our vision on how to share and enjoy it!
