Christians are supposed to live their lives according to the Gospel. But what does that mean in practice? Dr. Owen Strachan takes a look at what a gospel-centered life means and how to apply that knowledge in our lives.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We are diving into our new series titled, “Our House.” Each week we will take a look at one of our core values that align us to our mission. We believe each value will have an impact in your life and change your perspective in 2024.
Paul had a singular passion in his life—as the good news of Jesus Christ transformed him, he dedicated his life to share that same news with as many people as possible. His unceasing passion to preach and share Christ is what we have been called for as well. In 2024, we commit to encounter and proclaim Jesus Christ.
Have you ever felt like you are constantly striving for something that is never quite good enough? Or maybe you just feel like you're always falling a little short? If so, then this episode might be especially for you. This week's common struggle is perfectionism. Whether we can see it in small areas or all throughout our lives, perfectionism can quickly become exhausting, exacting and exasperating! The “do it all” mentality of many perfectionists often leads to positive feedback from others, but all the praise can easily hide our underlying motives to the point that we can become unaware of the shame beneath our striving. Throughout this episode Alex walks us through her own journey with perfectionism and how the gospel provides freedom from the many things that can drive the perfectionism in all of us. Shows Main Idea – What does it mean to live a gospel-centered life? It's a label and worldview that most Christians have heard. The gospel-centered life is practical, but many Christians do not know how to connect the gospel to everyday life. What does it mean? The gospel is an excellent idea for them but does not transform their lives or relationships. In this podcast, I will provide you with three essential ingredients to live an authentic, practical, gospel-centered life. Understanding Law & Gospel is incredibly important. This distinction prepares youth workers to teach and counsel in ways that keeps the gospel central while still calling students to holiness and repentance. Without Law and Gospel, we either turn the gospel into a to-do list or we extend so much grace there's little room for teaching the commands of Christ. Discussion Questions: Could you summarize what we mean by “Law & Gospel?” What sort of confusion around Law and Gospel have you observed in Christians, in general, and in youth in particular? What are the different uses of the Law? If the Law cannot save, then what good is it? What have you observed, either positive or negative, regarding Law & Gospel in the gospel-centered movement over the last 5 years? Are there any correctives you think are important to highlight for us? How can youth workers help students and parents embrace a biblical approach to Law and Gospel? Justin Schell is the US Director of Union School of Theology and helps oversee the Reformation Fellowship. He lives in Tulsa Oklahoma, he and his wife have two kids and he served as an interim youth pastor for a season of ministry. Life is learned, and we're all learning how to live from someone. And at the end of the day, we will live our lives in one of three ways: by Default (replicating familial patterns), by Drift (doing what everyone else is doing), or by Design (building your life with intention). In this sermon, we explore two philosophies of life, one religious and one secular, and compare these to a third way, the Way of Jesus. Moralistic Therapeutic Deism: God set up the world to work best for those who live rightly; so, if you want a whole and happy life now and Heaven when you die, be good. The problem is if you try to build your life on this philosophy, it simply can't support the weight of your life. It won't be able to handle the pressures that come your way, and in the end, it'll collapse. Moralistic Therapeutic Deism is sinking sand. Expressive Individualism: Life is about finding our deepest, inner self and expressing it authentically in the face of all expectations; so, if you want a whole and happy life, be yourself. The problem is if you try to build your life on yourself, it simply can't support the weight of your own life. It won't be able to handle the pressures that come your way, and in the end, it'll collapse. Expressive Individualism is sinking sand. Gospel-Centered Life in Jesus: We are made for abundant life with God, a relationship we lost because of our sin, but one that Jesus gave Himself to restore; so, if you want a whole and happy life with God now and forever, believe in Jesus. If I'm building my life on what I do, or if I'm building my life on who I am, at the end of the day, my life is built on myself. And I'll never be enough because it's a life built on sand. But if I build my life on whose I am, at the end of the day my life is built on Jesus. And He is always enough, so it's a life built on The Rock. Takeaway: On whom is your life built?

Join us as we explore the themes of confession, belief and love as a beautiful ongoing dance that brings the gospel to life every single day. It is a normal part of the Christian life for the Holy Spirit to show us the beauty of the character of God and that we don't measure up and to bring us to a place where we want to turn away from that. God's love is inexhaustible. He's like, "I'm going to stand with you. And I'm going to give you the grace and the power and let you know that I love you."
