Born Ricky D. Mitchell in Berkeley, CA in 1956, Imam Zaid Shakir converted to Islam in 1977 while serving in the United States Air Force. He studied the religion of Islam extensively, and today is popularly regarded as “America's Imam,” and one of the most prominent Muslim preachers alive. Imam Zaid was Muhammad Ali's spiritual leader, guide, and dear friend, and was whispering prayers into his ear in his hospital room when he passed away. Per Ali's prior request, he led his funeral prayer and presided over his memorial service. Among other achievements and accolades, he is also the co-founder of Zaytuna College (a private Islamic liberal arts college). He publishes regularly on contemporary issues and matters of public interest and debate, both as a private scholar and public intellectual. This episode is a rare gem, full of wisdom, insight, and timeless advice for the sincere seeker of truth. Aristotle said: “It is the mark of an educated mind to entertain a thought without accepting it.” Mo and AZ discuss some known, and many lesser-known, conspiracies. How do I come up with an idea for episodes? This show just celebrated 14 years in podcasting, and I would be lying if I said it was easy to come up with ideas for an episode every week. I will say this. There are some episodes that I feel are great, and I get no feedback on, and others that I feel I took out of the oven a little early and maybe were not quite ready to go to the public, and I get tons of feedback. I've also had a few shows that finding new ideas for episodes took all the fun out of doing the podcast, and so I shut the showdown. Think Twice When Setting Your Schedule I always advise my clients to record a few episodes so they can make an educated decision. Once you see how long it takes to create an episode you can look at your current obligations and schedule and figure out where you are going to squeeze in your podcast. While you don't have to have a consistent schedule, I feel it really helps. Why? Because when you release on a predictable schedule, you become part of their routine. How To Never Run Out of Ideas For Your Episode You know I have to start with value. I can put out episodes every day and not have a problem if I don't care about delivering value. However, I deeply care about delivering value so it can be a struggle. Here are some ideas: Facebook Groups If there are Facebook groups around your genre, you can join these and just listen. By seeing what people are talking about you can create content that you know will resonate with your audience. How do you do this? Go to Facebook.com and in the search bar at the top of the Facebook screen type in whatever your show is about and see if there are any Facebook groups. Google Alerts Google Alerts is a tool where you put in a topic, it scours the web, and emails you links to stories with that word or phrase. It's not a bad idea to setup an alert for the name of your show so you can track if anyone is talking about you, or infringing on your trademark. Subscribe to Blogs on Your Topic You can use a tool like Feedly or InoReader so you can login to one place and see what is happening in your space. Following Conversations on Twitter Using Tweet Deck you can do a search for a topic and then take that search and add it as a column of information. Consuming More Content If you use Chrome there is an extension creatively named "Video Speed Controller" that allows you to watch videos faster. New Releases on Amazon You can go to Amazon and look at new releases in your category and then have that information sent to you in an RSS feed. (which you can use in Feedly or inoreader). Search Engine Keyword/Idea Suggestion Ubdersuggest is a free tool that has TONS of used, but it does have a Content Ideas tool where you enter a subject and it will spit out ideas, and show you how popular they are. Answer the Public is a very creative tool that you type in a subject and it gives you a list of questions that people may be searching for (that you can export as a CSV file). Both these tools are free. What is Popular on YouTube? YouTube is the second largest search engine. You may have heard of it. With this in mind, you can search for your topic at YouTube. Find a channel that primarily covers your topic and then click on videos, and on the right-hand side click on Sort by > Most Popular. If you do this on my channel you will see my top videos are How to record Skype the easy way Anchor.fm Review Watch Before Using Why you should NOT use Soundcloud as a media host What is a podcast? Understanding the mechanics of podcasting. The idea here is not to steal someone's content. The idea is to see what is popular and then see if you have an opinion, insight, or story about that topic. Maybe there are a couple of topics you could combine to create a new look on an old subject. Resources For Interviews Check out the Guest Booking resources at https://podcastingresources.com/listing-category/podcast-guest-booking/ What if Someone Else Has Already Talked About This Subject? There are times when you may notice that your "competition" may have talked about a subject you want to talk about. Go ahead and talk about it here is why: In the USA every night there are at a bare minimum of six different stations reporting on politics. People want to hear what YOU think about something. You are assuming people listen to BOTH you and your "competition (and that may not be the case). Jessica is the host of Interview Connections TV, where each week she helps her viewers rock the podcast from both sides of the mic. THIS EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY: THE PROFIT PARTY ACADEMY If you've been in business for a few years and have hit a plateau, you're ready to make more money, and you're stuck, Tonya Rineer's Profit Party Academy is designed specifically for you. She wants to help you break down limiting beliefs and mindset blocks to set you up to rock in your business. The group academy will be a mix of group calls, mastermind and calls with Tonya. If you want more information, RSVP for her Profit Party Academy. IN THIS EPISODE 2:00 Tonya binge listened to Jessica's podcast in order to learn everything she needed to know before starting the Profit Party podcast. 4:25 Before things were amazing, there were hiccups and there still are hiccups. Jessica shares her stories of bumps in the road and how she got started in her entrepreneur journey. 5:00 When Jessica got pregnant, she quit her job at a non-profit. Her dad told her about being a virtual assistant. Her dad was her first client. She didn't think about how much money she needed to make when she quit her job. 8:30 Her and her husband made decisions to live the "perfect" lifestyle and found that it came with the high price tag. They had a lot of credit card debt and made changes since facing their debt 8-10 months ago. They started following Dave Ramsey's plan to start cutting down on their debt. 10:00 The slippery slope of using credit cards. Jessica remembers getting her first credit card at her college. It's an emotional roller coaster to build a business and not have the income and money to pay for things. You don't want to not spend money because you feel like you're on a money diet. 12:53 Four years is how long it takes to get money coming in, get the right team members and have momentum going in your business. Jessica feels like she's at that point and it takes a while to get that business going. How well a business is going and what happens before the success 13:37 People see from the outside that the business is going well, but people don't see how much the entrepreneur is paying themselves and what happens before the success. There's so many changes that have to be made when you have a mindset shift when you decide not to buy things that you don't need. It's like going on a diet, it takes a bit see changes. You have to celebrate the little wins and build up for a big reward. For Jessica, paying off the debt and her reward will be getting a bathroom on her second floor. 15:45 Jessica started out as a virtual assistant for her dad. She checked links, categorized videos, client support, and Pinterest marketing. That's when she started getting into the podcast booking with her dad asking her to book him on podcasts. 16:53 Her transition from the door to door canvassing director for a non-profit, to an online business owner was a great advantage to her as she started working at podcast pitching. 18:00 Pitching big podcasters and not knowing who the big celebrities are in the online world. Fan girling the online celebrities and how we view the celebrities in the US culture. Talk to online celebrities like a peer and they'll be more likely to help you out and work with you. 20:14 The mindset of aspiring to be like those we look up to, we create a barrier of what we perceive our capabilities to be. If we copy what we like about them, we can act like them and take on those personality traits, it's easier to talk to them when you meet them. 21:47 Jessica tries to demystify the celebrities with her work. The huge celebrities are not the ones who will help you get where you need to be. She hit 6 figures and she had an email list of 200. Her view is that she'd rather be making a lot of money instead of being famous. Focus on making money in your business and the fame will come at that point. 24:24 Pick the people you're listening to and make sure they are actually making money and are successful. Focus on your own stuff. 25:07 What to focus on and how to get started podcasting. You're not going to be good when you first start. Record a few episodes and they might not be good, but just get started. You don't have to be marketing on every platform. When you blog, video, and podcast, there are pros and cons to putting out that much content. You have to make sure your podcast will fit in well with your business. Either interviewing clients and have great guest co-hosts. 30:37 When you first get on a call to podcast with them, break the ice and start talking before recording. That's really where you'll make or break the show. The goal is to have good chemistry with the guest and host. 32:38 Why Jessica decided to pick the service of hooking up podcasters and guests as her core service. She looked at what had the greatest potential for growth and money. 33:57 How she started pitching podcasts by looking at iTunes and emailing the hosts. She loves the excitement when her clients get booked on a podcast. 34:50 If you're bootstrapping your podcast pitching, listen to Jessica's podcast episodes on pitching podcasts. Come up with a one sheet and give podcasters something they can look at when you pitch them. Jessica is giving a free one sheet to the listeners which you can get on her website with the code publicity. Podcasters don't want to know why you're a great guest, they want to know what great content they will get from you. [bctt tweet="Focus on making money in your business and the fame will come at that point." username="tonyarineer"] KEY TAKEAWAYS Jessica shares her stories of bumps in the road and how she got started in her entrepreneur journey. To podcast or not to podcast? To be a guest on a show or host your own show? How do you know what is the right way to go? If you are a guest, how do you pick a show to be on? Does size matter? What content do you share with the host and their listeners? Is your appearance a sales pitch or something else? Is it better to have someone book you onto shows or do it yourself? If you have your own podcast, how do you get guests? How do you get good guests? What does it cost to start a podcast and what makes a podcast so good that people want to listen? These questions and a few more are asked and answered by my guest, Jessica Rhodes, Founder of Interviewconnections.com and host of three in-demand podcasts.
