Indian Genius: The Meteoric Rise of Indians in America is a new book by the author and journalist Meenakshi Ahamed. While many immigrant groups have found success in the United States, few have excelled as far and as fast as Indian Americans, reaching heights in a single generation that many thought would take the better part of a century to achieve. Ahamed's new book offers fascinating portraits of several Indian Americans in three distinct sectors—technology, medicine, and public policy. The book tries to understand what exactly accounts for Indian Americans' ability to break into mainstream American culture and their meteoric rise within its ranks.Listeners may remember our 2021 conversation with Meena on her previous book, A Matter of Trust: India–US Relations from Truman to Trump. To talk about her new book, Meena joins Milan on the show this week. They talk about the “godfather” of the Indian tech community in Silicon Valley, the balance between creativity and execution, and the role of caste. Plus, the two discuss the real (and perceived) influence of Indian Americans in Washington.Episode notes:1. What do Fareed Zakaria, Nikki Haley, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Vinod Khosla and Kamala Harris all have in common? They are all, of course, highly successful Americans of Indian descent. According Meenakshi Ahamed, author of Indian Genius, one reason for what she calls the “meteoric rise” of Indians in America are their humble beginnings here. Arriving with minimal resources (what she calls the "$8 club"), Ahamed attributes their success to "jugaad" (resourcefulness), competitive spirit, family values, and an emphasis on education. She notes Indians are America's fastest-growing immigrant group, with traditionally Democratic voting patterns, though a 10% shift toward Republicans occurred in recent elections. So what are the chances that Trump will read Indian Genius to understand the upside of immigration to America? Less than zero, of course. 5 Key Takeaways * Successful Immigration Counter-Narrative: Ahamed's book presents a counter-narrative to anti-immigrant rhetoric, showcasing how Indian Americans have made significant contributions to American society, particularly in medicine, technology, and business.* The "$8 Club" Phenomenon: Many successful Indian immigrants came to America with extremely limited resources (just $8 due to India's currency restrictions) yet achieved remarkable success through determination, education, and hard work.* "Jugaad" Mindset: Ahamed attributes much of Indian immigrants' success to "jugaad" - a resourcefulness and ability to create something from nothing, developed in India's competitive environment where people must constantly find ways to get ahead.* Generational and Class Dynamics: Earlier Indian immigrants (1965-2010) typically came from upper castes with access to education, though this is changing. Additionally, Ahamed notes differences between first-generation immigrants like Vinod Khosla and later arrivals like Nadella and Pichai.* Shifting Political Allegiances: While Indian Americans traditionally voted 75% Democratic, Ahamed notes a recent 10% shift toward Republicans, particularly among younger Indian American men born in the US, reflecting broader demographic voting patterns.Meenakshi Ahamed was born in 1954 in Calcutta, India. After finishing school in India, she obtained an MA from Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies in 1978. She has had a varied career as a journalist, and prior to that, as a development consultant. She has worked at the World Bank in Washington, DC, as well as for the Ashoka Society. In 1989, she moved to London and became the foreign correspondent for New Delhi Television (NDTV). After returning to the United States in 1996, she worked as a freelance journalist. Her op-eds and articles have been published in the Asian Age, Seminar, Foreign Policy, the Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post. She has served on the board of Doctors Without Borders, the Turquoise Mountain Foundation, and Drugs for Neglected Diseases. She divides her time between the United States and India.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In this episode, I'm gonna be discussing why a lot of people are ashamed of who they truly are. Why people are so ashamed of their flaws, imperfections, disabilities, being average, not being part of the norm or society, and not being excepted or liked by other people? Why is it that we're trying to fit society standards that is realistically unattainable? What people don't understand is when you start changing things about your body when it comes to plastic surgery, or becoming transgender is you are destroying what God has made you to be. Just because you feel like you are a girl, but you're a boy or vice versa, does not mean you have to change your whole entire body because of the way you feel. There are millions of people that actually do the transgender surgery that regret the fact that they have done the surgery in the first place. There's a lot of people that were gay at one time and now they're going back to becoming heterosexual.. At the end of the day people need to learn to just leave well enough alone, and just except the body that you're in. There's nothing wrong with you just because you don't fit into society standards. In this episode, I just want to give people some inspiration as a motivation to just stay who they are. And just learn to accept the body, mind, and spirit that they are

Imteaz Ahamed, the Director of Performance Marketing - Nutrition at Reckitt, joins E-Commerce with Coffee?! host Nate Svoboda to talk about how to plan for innovation. It's not something elusive that only comes when someone has a brainwave—instead, it's baked into your business processes and systems. Imteaz offers memorable anecdotes and tons of personal examples as he walks listeners through evolving market trends and how to stay ahead of them. Listen to the full interview to learn how to plan for innovation as a small-to-medium business and how technology goes hand-in-hand with the strategy. What to listen for: Imteaz has been at Reckitt for 15 years and in many roles. The interview starts with a look at where he began: sales. Imteaz comments that sales are “definitely a skill you need to master,” be it for entrepreneurs, thought leaders, or anyone else in business. “No matter how great an idea of yours is, if you can't convince people it's special,” he explains, “you aren't going to pay the bills.” Listen to the full interview to learn how Imteaz transitioned from sales to e-commerce at the company. When Imteaz and Nate transition into more tech-specific talk, Nate asks what some of the biggest changes are that Imteaz has seen in his years in e-commerce. “Time scales and business cycles,” Imteaz answers. He recalls how it used to be once or twice a year that businesses launched new products. Today, businesses are in constant-churning product cycles of researching market needs, developing new products, and launching them. He explains, “anyone who can justify more frequent changes DOES make more frequent changes.” He advises companies to “adapt to the pace of change that customers now are happy to work with.” The interview then turns into some of the key elements (systems, processes, and tools) that small and medium-sized businesses need today to stay innovative in the delivery of their products or services. “It isn't a digital transformation [anymore],” he says, “it's just doing business.” While the right tech solutions are part of the puzzle for every business, Imteaz also stresses the importance of the best talent. “That's the people part of it,” he clarifies. “[You need] someone who understands what you're doing today and how you're going to do it in the future.” Any business planning to skate the edge of continuous innovation also needs dynamic processes. Processes are always put into place for the right reasons, Imteaz concedes, but over time those processes get old. Every time the business challenge changes (or every 2X growth in staff or 3X growth in revenue, roughly), you have to rewrite all your core processes from scratch. The interview turns next to innovations Imteaz has seen in the customer journey. He suggests that the world of loyalty is the greatest shift he's witnessed. He walks listeners through a personal (and remarkable) example of some of his best airport experiences as a business traveler and member of one airline's frequent fliers. By the end of his summary of how that one loyalty program works—as much for him as for the airline—you'll be hard-pressed not to want to join the same flight club. Disruptions we should expect on the horizon, Imteaz says, include one that's already here: the metaverse. He offers a simple explanation of the metaverse and helps paint the picture of what more personal sales models will look like in this space in the near future. Ideas to foster innovation can be exciting, but resolute KPIs have to be part of the equation, and that's where the interview ends. Imteaz concedes, “it comes down to what type of business you are and how long you can keep the customer for.” He promptly gives examples of what kind of growth to aim for. Listen to the full interview for the most surprising example at the very end. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.01.07.523102v1?rss=1 Authors: Zhu, Y., Auer, F., Gelnaw, H., Davis, S. N., Hamling, K. R., May, C. E., Ahamed, H., Ringstad, N., Nagel, K. I., Schoppik, D. Abstract: Balance and movement are impaired in a wide variety of neurological disorders. Recent advances in behavioral monitoring provide unprecedented access to posture and locomotor kinematics, but without the throughput and scalability necessary to screen candidate genes / potential therapeutics. We present a powerful solution: a Scalable Apparatus to Measure Posture and Locomotion (SAMPL). SAMPL includes extensible imaging hardware and low-cost open-source acquisition software with real-time processing. We first demonstrate that SAMPL's hardware and acquisition software can acquire data from three species (flies, worms, and zebrafish) as they move vertically. Next, we leverage SAMPL's throughput to rapidly (two weeks) gather a new zebrafish dataset. We use SAMPL's analysis and visualization tools to replicate and extend our current understanding of how zebrafish balance as they navigate through a vertical environment. Next, we discover (1) that key kinematic parameters vary systematically with genetic background, and (2) that such background variation is small relative to the changes that accompany early development. Finally, we simulate SAMPL's ability to resolve differences in posture or vertical navigation as a function of affect size and data gathered -- key data for screens. Taken together, our apparatus, data, and analysis provide a powerful solution for labs using small animals to investigate balance and locomotor disorders at scale. More broadly, SAMPL is both an adaptable resource for labs looking process videographic measures of behavior in real-time, and an exemplar of how to scale hardware to enable the throughput necessary for screening. The Department of Corrections has admitted it missed opportunities to de-radicalise the man responsible for stabbing eight people in a supermarket last year. Ahamed Samsudeen was shot fatally by police after the stabbing frenzy, which took place shortly after his release from prison. A review into police and corrections' management of Samsudeen found he was locked up on remand for too long, and that his religious and cultural needs weren't met. The Department of Corrections says it has since poured resources into the departments dealing with people at risk of violent extremism. Chief executive Jeremy Lightfoot spoke to Kim Hill.

We sit down with Mohammed Ahamed, CEO and Chief Diversity Officer at EDI Executive Search to discuss leadership today and how it has changed over time. Sometimes we must wear the cap if it fits in leadership in order to learn or unlearn to make positive progress in our learning journey. Mo starts and ends each day in reflection focusing on gratitude to see the sun rise and set that day, knowing he has been given the opportunity to make a difference by being ALIVE! It is that intentionality, to make the most out of today, that energizes Mo in the work he does. We could all be a little more grateful and thankful today to realize what we do have and not focus all our energy on what we do not. "Don't count the days make the days count" - Muhammed Ali
The India-US relationship is one of the most significant and fascinating among great nations. In this episode of the Serve to Lead Podcast, historian and journalist Meenakshi Ahamed discusses her new book, A Matter of Trust: India-US Relations From Truman to Trump. Ahamed combines analytical rigor with a storyteller’s gift for narrative. The book has garnered critical acclaim, and is a finalist for the prestigious Arthur Ross Award of the Council on Foreign Relations.Seventy years of India-US relations has shown that despite the two countries being democracies, not only are they far apart culturally but the intersection of their critical interests is relatively modest. Therefore, the only time when the relationship has developed any real momentum is when one of the leaders has been willing to make a leap of faith.—Meenakshi AhamedIndia’s world role continues to evolve amid the kaleidoscopic changes underway with the rise of China and other challenges to the so-called liberal international order that has prevailed since the end of the Second World War. Ahamed illuminates current issues—such as India’s decision not to join the United States in support Ukraine’s struggle against Russian aggression in 2022—through her understanding of India’s history of non-alignment during the twentieth-century Cold War. She also has a keen understanding of the unique contributions of Indian-Americans in US business, which may continue to pull our nations ever closer in the decades ahead.Critical Acclaim'Meenakshi Ahamed has brought us a brilliant, important, sparkling and definitive study of a part of American history that is growing more crucial by the day. A Matter of Trust is essential reading at a moment when the United States and India are all the more central to each other, and when valiant democracies around the world are in danger.'—Michael Beschloss, New York Times bestselling author and NBC News Presidential Historian'Meenakshi Ahamed has given us an authentic, thoughtful and accessible account of a relationship characterized by paradox and progress. She tells the tale of the highs and lows of that relationship in all its drama, with strong and idiosyncratic personalities on both sides. Today's transformed India-US relations could determine the future not only of one-fifth of humanity but of the Asian Century. This is a book with a serious message—one to read and savor.'—Shivshankar Menon, Former National Security Advisor, Ambassador to China and Foreign Secretary'In this world of growing great power competition, the Indian-American relationship has become one of central, strategic importance to the two nations. In her history of the relationship, Meena Ahamed has given us a timely, lively and captivating account of the road India and the United States have travelled and a compelling insight into what lies ahead.'—Frank G. Wisner, Former United States Ambassador to India'Meenakshi Ahamed's labor of love is a real tour de force covering the long tortuous history of the often-troubled relationship of the world's two largest democracies since India's independence. The book is at once scholarly, deeply researched and yet down to earth. It brings to life the prickly personalities on both sides, and their sensitivities, that often bedeviled the evolving bilateral relationship. As a new era of competitive geopolitics pits West versus East, what lies ahead for this unusual relationship? To prepare ourselves this book is a must-read.'—Dr Rakesh Mohan, Former Deputy Governor Reserve Bank of IndiaAbout the AuthorMeenakshi Narula Ahamed was born in 1954 in Calcutta, India. After finishing school in India, she obtained an MA from Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies in 1978. She has had a varied career as a journalist and prior to that as a development consultant. She has worked at the World Bank in Washington D.C. as well as for the Ashoka Society. In 1989, she moved to London and became the foreign correspondent for NDTV. Among the leaders she interviewed were Nelson Mandela, John Major and Bill Clinton during his presidential campaign. She covered the race riots in London and reported on the rise of Indian entrepreneurs in the US in the mid nineties. After returning to the US in 1996, she worked as a freelance journalist. Her op-eds and articles have been published in Asian Age, Seminar, Foreign Policy, Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post. She has served on the board of Doctors Without Borders, The Turquoise Mountain Foundation and Drugs for Neglected Diseases. Saleem Ahamed is the Chief Marketing Officer at Plastic Bank, an organization that is helping the world to stop ocean plastic, while improving the lives of those who help collect it. Founded in 2013 and headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia, Plastic Bank's mission is to empower the regenerative society by building ethical recycling ecosystems in coastal communities and reprocessing the materials for reintroduction into the global manufacturing supply chain. Currently, the company operates in Haiti, Brazil, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Egypt, and works with over 17,000 collectors. So far, Plastic Bank has stopped over one billion plastic bottles from entering our oceans. That's over 20 million kilograms of plastic waste. With a background in business and marketing, Saleem began his career over 25 years ago, working for Procter & Gamble in Europe. After more than a decade with Procter & Gamble, he joined Johnson & Johnson, where he eventually became Worldwide Director of Global Strategic Marketing. In 2012, he decided to launch a business of his own, as Co-Founder and CEO of Silver Health Systems, a valet dental care company. After four years of this entrepreneurial hiatus, he rejoined Johnson & Johnson to take on a series of senior leadership roles – including that of Global CMO – in the company's Diabetes Care division. In 2019, Saleem transitioned into the Cleantech space, when he took on the role of Chief Marketing Officer at Terramera, a Vancouver-based AgTech company focused on applying AI solutions to agricultural problems. Finally, in early 2020, he joined the team at Plastic Bank in his current position of CMO. In this interview, Saleem talks about why Plastic Bank set up its operations in the countries where it did, the importance of driving the value proposition through strategic brand management, and how the organization now creates value on multiple levels for different types of stakeholders – from local plastic collectors to multinational corporate partners.
