In this episode, I was joined by Zach Wheatley. He is a friend, the son of a friend and the nephew of a friend…all at the same time. Zach just started his M.Ed program in school counseling at Utah Valley University. He also coaches football and lacrosse at Viewmont High School in Bountiful, Utah. And on top of all of that, he works as a Teen Center Coordinator in the newly established Teen Center Program at Viewmont High School which provides him an opportunity to support students who are lacking basic needs. On it's website, www.daviseducationfoundation.org, the Teen Center Program is described as a supportive facility within a high school that provides resources and assistance to help students overcome barriers to learning. Teen Centers offer a space where students can access basic necessities, academic support and guidance, that help them thrive in both their academic and personal lives. Zach and I discussed his work at the Teen Center in light of a couple of my poems, “Dark Canopy” and “Moab”: DARK CANOPY Hopelessness covers me: Like a forest canopy On a moonless night It covers me. I see no way or path To deliver myself. And the darkness: It fills my eyes. And they are unable to see The torchlight Of rescuers who may approach. All is black and dead. Every gleam is only a phantom. And the only variations in light Are darker shadows Waiting to finish me off For good. MOAB This land, wounded and scarred and full of shadows, She turns his face to Her To see and he sees Her stillness and Her beauty And he understands What can be. I'd love to hear what you have to say about the episode including thoughts on the poetry and the topics that were discussed. You can email me at poetdelayed@gmail.com. Becky Loveless shares her personal story of growing up in a devout Mormon family and community. She discusses the immense pressure she felt to be perfect and avoid any behavior considered sinful. This culminated when, at age 17, her parents discovered she had been intimate with her boyfriend and secretly sent her away to a strict religious behavioral modification camp called "Lifeline" in Salt Lake City without her knowledge or consent. Becky recounts the traumatic experiences at this camp, including the rigid rules, lack of credentials among staff, and the emotional manipulation tactics. She explains how the ordeal negatively affected her self-worth and strained relationships in her life for years after. Becky emphasizes the lack of understanding about normal adolescent behavior in these religious communities, the damage caused by guilt and shame, and the need for more open, understanding parenting. She hopes that increased awareness and support for youth might prevent this from happening to others. Episode Show Notes YouTube Link Mormon Stories Thanks Our Generous Donors! Across the state, hundreds of thousands of students are heading back to school. But for those students who may be experiencing homelessness or other economic disadvantages, this can be a particularly trying time. To help better address the needs of these students, the Legislature has allocated funding that can be used towards the creation of “Teen Centers” within schools. One of the leading organizations behind this movement is the Utah based advocacy group, the Policy Project. Joining us in this episode to discuss how these teen centers will help students is the Director of Policy for the Policy Project, Mary Catherine Perry.
Rebecca Hermosillo takes community seriously. As the ED of the Teen Center, she took it upon herself to make dinner every night with the teens as a way to make them feel part of something bigger. Growing up on a farm in Sonoma, she saw how her big family brought people together for tamales, and understood what it meant to have Mexican heritage. And now, as a representative for Congressman Mike Thompson, she sees what representation in the national American community looks like. In this episode, we talk about Rebecca's role as a local mentor and the people she looks up to, we discuss what Sonomans can expect from their federal representatives, and we learn about how to see the world around you as full of potential friends. This is Derek Miller Speaking on Business. The Policy Project is a nonprofit organization that promotes and advocates for solution-based policy to remove barriers to education and the workforce. Director of Policy and Government Affairs Mary Catherine Perry shares more on the launch of their new initiative -- the Teen Center Project Mary Catherine Perry: The number of Utah students experiencing mental health struggles, unstable housing, and other physiological needs is increasing. Over the past year, we have been working on the Teen Center Project, a public-private partnership between the Utah Legislature and private donors to create a space within Utah high schools that provides students support such as laundry facilities, showers, a food pantry, and a trusted adult who can connect students and families with outside resources for more sustained and comprehensive care. Through The Policy Project advocacy and support of Utah community members, we secured a $15 million dollar appropriation from the Utah Legislature, as well as additional funds from several private donors. This will allow over 60 Utah high schools to access a grant to build a teen center in their schools. Several Utah school districts have piloted the concept, and have seen incredible results, including high service utilization, positive academic and social outcomes, and increased graduation rates for their most vulnerable and at-risk students. Barry, Moret & Dan. Moret Brealynn from Morét-Brealynn Wines is our guest on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. Barry Herbst is also in today from Bottle Barn, to describe their current Rosé promotion. Moret started working in a tasting room and noticed that there was more to wine than just that. So she started taking classes in winemaking, first at Santa Rosa Junior College. She interned at the SF Chronicle wine competition. She went from Silver Oak to Kosta Browne working on promotions, tastings and shipping wine. This was her first exposure to production. At Silver Oak everyone is a specialist but at KB people wear different hats so she learned a lot of different jobs. See this page of the Morét-Brealynn website for her whole story. The winery also supports animal shelters. In her career before wine Moret was Teen Center director for the city of Davis, in charge of park activities for teens, which is the job that later brought her to Sonoma County. Dan's cellar wine of the week, Baileyana 2013 Chardonnay. Dan Berger's cellar wine this week is a 2013 Baileyana Chardonnay that was made to have good acidity. It has been in a good cellar at a steady 55 degrees too, so it is in great condition. Stray Cats They taste the Morét-Brealynn 100% Muscadelle called Stray Cats. The fruit comes from the Sonoma Valley. There is a case on sale at Bottle Barn now. Dan mentions that Muscadelle is usually blended with Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon to make a white Bordeaux blend. Dan has never seen it before all alone, as a varietal. The orange kitty on the label is her cat Simba. Next they taste two Rosés, a 2021 and 2022, and she describes her process of making each one. Moret compares them to sisters. They were both bottled in December in neutral barrels, but they come from different vineyards. Barry Herbst describes how Bottle Barn's Rosé season is starting now, at the store. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the coolest bargains on wine, beer and spirits. The last two tastings are her two Pinot Noirs. They are made with 60% new French oak, 30% whole cluster. It has got some pretty high ratings. All of the Morét-Brealynn wines have screw caps, which everyone agrees is more and more popular. Dan mentions that we only have about a 10-year history of aging big red wines with screw caps, and it will take 10 or 20 more years to reach the 30-year threshold.
It's a tale as old as time. The teenagers of Bismarck were bored. Besides watching movies or cruising Main Street, the kids wanted something fun to do after school and on the weekends. On this date in 1992, the front page of the Bismarck Tribune ran a story about an ambitious group of teens called Upbeat that wanted to do what no one else in Bismarck had managed to do: open a successful teen center.

Mal Washington is a cool guy. A real estate investor, entrepreneur, husband, father, philanthropist, pro athlete, business owner, olympian, and Wimbledon finalist, he started tennis at the age of 5 and became a 2-time all American and finished his sophomore year at the University of Michigan ranked as the NCAA #1 tennis player in the nation. Over a career that spanned 10 years, he won four career titles while reaching a total of 13 finals. He reached a career high #11 in the world in singles in 1992, 1993, and 1996; and in 1996, he reached the Wimbledon championship final becoming the first African American man to reach a grand slam singles final since 1975. He remains one of only two African American men to achieve this. A member of the US Olympic Team and US Davis Cup Team, Mal suffered a knee injury during his final Davis Cup appearance in 1997; following two knee surgeries, he retired in 1999. He shares in this episode his love for the greatest sport — tennis. But his voice now stands solidly in what to do with what you've been given. He's giving back through his Foundation, The Mal Washington Foundation, located in the urban core, Durkeeville neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida. Now, this 25-year-old non-profit organization provides after school homework assistance and life skills programs to kids; and it all started simply to show kids the game of tennis who otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity. In 2020, after completion of a $5 million capital campaign, the Foundation opened a brand new state of the art Club 904 Teen Center to serve for decades to come. Ready to serve up your creative gifts to others and get love in return? It's your serve. They offer instruction in character development, leadership development, life skills, job skills, and financial literacy. They focus on aspects of healthy, responsible moral development that builds strong character, self-esteem, academic, and leadership skills. The culture at the Teen Center is one in which they are loving first and firm when needed. A family-type, anti-bullying, safe environment is their hallmark. When youth walk through their Red Doors, they see kids who have the potential to thrive with mentoring and guidance. Their niche is fostering grit, perseverance, curiosity, passion, and accountability. These non-academic pursuits are the success indicators of positive, thriving futures. They are committed to engaging these young people in positive relationships and meaningful activities that allow them to be courageous in the face of their traumatic life circumstances. Given their transient, middle and high school population, they know that hunger and homelessness are on the rise and parent substance use is a contributing factor to their kids' exposure to early trauma. Confronted with the fallout of childhood trauma, they are asking why do some children adapt and overcome, while others bear lifelong scars that flatten their potential? A growing body of evidence points to one common answer: Every child who winds up doing well has had at least one stable and committed relationship with a supportive adult. Please consider donating to help My Place Teen Center continue their mission. Not only will you be helping children today, but also our future adults! Part 2: Weekly Words of Wisdom - Lynda shares a story about a recent encounter with an angry parent and provides tips on how we can have a positive influence on our children.
