Working out hard and doing “all the things” but not seeing the results you expected? Feel like no matter what you do, you aren't seeing your body change where you want it to change? Should you change up your workouts? Call it quits? Start a different one and see is that one “is the one”? It get it, it can be so confusing BUT jumping from program to program will NOT get you the results you are looking for. I'm about to fill you in on some stuff that your last diet/workout program may not have told you. YES it's important to move your body in ways that you enjoy. You should look forward to your workouts, not hate them or feel like they are punishment. However, if you are looking to “tone” “lean out” or build muscle, like changing your body composition (losing fat & building muscle), your workouts AND MEALS should reflect that. But don't worry, there's room for what you enjoy too. You likely just need to incorporate weight training, or have a more structured weight training program where you can focus on progressive overload. STOP chasing the calorie burn on your watch!! You are NOT going to see a huge number when you incorporate strength training and that's OKAY! Your workouts should not be about burning as many calories as possible in that short time. GO LIFE HEAVY SHIT!!! EAT THE PROTEIN!! The more muscle you have, the better primed your metabolism is. THIS will not show up on your calorie counter BUT you will see the results on your body!! Building muscle has you actually burning more calories while you're AT REST!! IT TAKES TIME!! Somehow, we think it's not working and we run back to that last weight loss program because “ it worked that one time”. STARVING YOURSELF THIN WILL NOT GIVE YOU MUSCLE!!! I get it, it's the comfort zone. BUT, nothing changes if nothing changes!! You are changing things up too frequently and your body has a WTF moment! You are not sticking to anything long enough for your body to progress and adapt to things. Give it 4-6 WEEKS!! Yep, I know, when you are used to doing 87 different workouts, this might seem difficult or even boring!! PROGRESSIVE OVERLOAD, watch and see what happens. You will notice you can life heavier, your endurance is better and you FEEL like a bad ass! Born Ricky D. Mitchell in Berkeley, CA in 1956, Imam Zaid Shakir converted to Islam in 1977 while serving in the United States Air Force. He studied the religion of Islam extensively, and today is popularly regarded as “America's Imam,” and one of the most prominent Muslim preachers alive. Imam Zaid was Muhammad Ali's spiritual leader, guide, and dear friend, and was whispering prayers into his ear in his hospital room when he passed away. Per Ali's prior request, he led his funeral prayer and presided over his memorial service. Among other achievements and accolades, he is also the co-founder of Zaytuna College (a private Islamic liberal arts college). He publishes regularly on contemporary issues and matters of public interest and debate, both as a private scholar and public intellectual. The concept is both theoretically and methodologically rich allowing for focus not only on animals' experiences but how researchers' relations with, proximity to, and understanding of animals' bodies and lives alters the way we come to know said experience. Her work explores the everyday geographies of violence in which humans and other species are entangled. She is the author of The Cow with Ear Tag #1389 (University of Chicago Press, 2018) and co-editor of Vulnerable Witness (University of California Press, 2019), Critical Animal Geographies (Routledge, 2015), and Economies of Death (Routledge, 2015). She has also published her work in such journals as Hypatia, Gender, Place, and Culture, Animal Studies Journal, Politics and Animals, and Environment and Planning A. Knowledgeable health experts are really making gut dysfunction the heart and center of a variety of real issues that can arise within. The recent discoveries being made is that the impact on our guts is enormous. Tim Noakes says insulin resistance and gut health are the future of medicine. Most of our immune function and half of our serotonin function happens in the gut. When you have a stomach that isn’t performing optimally, the digestion and assimilation of food as it’s passed doesn’t correctly absorb nutrients, and you're left with uncomfortable gas and bloating, and nutrient deficiencies as well. High stress puts a ton of pressure on your digestive system. For example, when performing a triathlete circuit, it’s your stomach that will be the first to suffer the consequences. Getting off carbs is one of the best ways we can save our stomachs. You burn fewer carbs at rest, AND during a workout (including the warmup and peripheral movement before the meaty, hard stuff) where you definitely do burn carbs (glycolytic). BUT you can make carbs from fatty acid metabolism or have ketones replace your carb needs. You don’t need a bunch of carbs coming from your diet. Excess carbs end up wreaking havoc on your gut. Tommy points out that if you cut dietary carbs, you can still meet your glucose needs. By making carbs via gluconeogenesis (your fat metabolism makes glycerol split off of fat). Glycogen stores carbs in your muscles and liver. It binds with 3-4 grams of water/gram of carb ingested. That’s why you quickly lose 10 pounds when you dramatically cut carbs out of your diet. Polarized training is tremendous to metabolic efficiency. Working out at Maximum Aerobic Function (MAF) or at brief intensity works with our genetics and PB laws. We want to stay in a range of completing daily movement and entering a very short cycle of fight or flight overall. Going all the way to the threshold is a punishment not just for our hormones but our poor guts. If you don’t want a leaky gut, polarized training is the way to go. Tommy counters the boilerplate keto talk that fasting is actually the ultimate health practice and that eating fewer calories equals longevity. I think my calorie increase experience has increased energy AT REST because I’m not overcompensating for exercise while fasting and on keto. This is the best step toward metabolic efficiency. We also have to consider the emotional stress of adhering to keto. Peter Attia got tired of it after three years after all. Tommy also believes that athletes that are doing depleting workouts also get autophagy. Personally, I like the intuitive approach where I may be fasting/ keto several days and other days may pound out workouts in the morning. How awesome is it to ‘eat more food till you get fat’? …Yes, you will find ways to increase thermogenesis. It is hard to believe though because the calories in/calories out concepts are so ingrained in us. Tommy was talking about how we know what to do, but need the psychology part. Why is this so? We have so much temptation in modern life to engage in digital entertainment, exhaust ourselves in work or training. We also have poor mechanics like sleeping habits. We’ve become so far removed from knowing what our bodies really need. Lack of respect appreciation for the importance of movement - Katy Bowman lazy athlete mentality.
