It was great to hear about her work leading up to running Laurel Glen Vineyard. “Well, it did start small. so I went to work for Augustine Hues who was getting ready to launch his pet project, his very special project Quintessa. And, I was lucky enough to be on there to help him. I was the first director of sales and marketing and I helped to build the reputation and it was a great ride. It was really fun,” Bettina Sichel on The Restaurant Guys Podcast 2025BioIn 2011, Bettina Sichel, a veteran of the California wine industry, became the steward of Laurel Glen Vineyard after purchasing the iconic estate from founder Patrick Campbell in partnership with a small group of wine lovers. Aaron Pott is a true legend in wine country. Starting his career at newton Vineyards in Napa, he left the U.S. for a position as winemaker at Château Troplong-Mondot, a Premier Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Émilion, France. Aaron then moved to Château Troplong- Mondont after a year to become director at Château La Tour Figeac, a Grand Cru Classé located in Saint-Emilion. He spent five years there and, in the process, earned a degree in Viticulture from the Université de Bourgogne in Dijon, France. Aaron eventually returned to Napa and accepted the position of head winemaker in charge of international brands for Beringer before taking over as general manager and winemaker at Quintessa in 2004. After buying a piece of property on Mt. Veeder, Aaron and his wife Claire started Pott Wines, making Zinfandel, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Grenache. He continues to consult for numerous wineries, when he's not surfing or watching soccer. All the wines are stellar, but that Zinfandel and Cabernet Franc are still on my mind. Generating leads is only half the battle. The war to boost ROI is won only when those leads become signed cases. Many lead generation agencies supply leads and leave the task of conversion to the law firm. Lauren Mingee (@laurenvon22), founder and CEO of Quintessa Marketing, goes a step further. When a firm partners with Quintessa Marketing (@quintessamarketing1), they receive qualified leads signed onto a retainer within 24 hours. This is a game changer for firms looking to test the waters in new markets, go remote, or who want to fill their pipeline without learning the ins and outs of marketing. Today, Lauren explains how to systematize lead follow-up for consistent conversion, why intake teams need to be compensated like a sales team, and why seeding the lead pipeline in a new pipeline will grow a winning referral network. Joel Gott was definitely raised in a wine family. The fourth-generation California vintner, and wine and food entrepreneur was born in Napa Valley and raised in the Sierra Foothills where his parents started Montevina Winery. Joel later moved to Carmel and upon graduating high school went to work for Kenwood Winery in Sonoma County. But his first dive into business wasn't just to start making wine, in fact he and his brother Duncan purchased a small market in Calistoga called Palisades Market. It was there that Joel started to discover what part of the wine business he wanted to make his presence known. Joel and his wife Sarah, (Phelps & Quintessa) started Joel Gott wines in 1996 focused on wines of quality and value. Last year with the purchase of the historic Edge Hill Winery in St. Helena you can expect to see Gott Wines enter the fine wine market. I think you will see that it's done thoughtfully, well planned and something that will make an impact in the future. gottwines.com instagram.com/joelgottwines gotts.com instagram.com/gottsroadside

This episode takes a wide-ranging look at biodynamic agriculture, which, perhaps not so coincidentally, seems to be the foundational philosophy underlying a disproportionately large percentage of the world's best wines. The Thieves speak with two prominent Californian practitioners of biodynamics to discuss several aspects of this philosophy-cum-practical manifesto, first developed by Austrian-born philosopher and social reformer Rudolf Steiner, who lived from 1861-1925. Show guests Rodrigo Soto, Chilean-born viticulturist now general manager at Augustín Huneeus's flagship Napa Valley estate, Quintessa, and John Hamel, the second generation at Hamel Family Wines across the Mayacamas Mountains in Sonoma discuss the practical, mystical and controversial aspects of biodynamic wine production . Both are fervent believers in the power of biodynamic agriculture, and above all, have an unshakeable faith in the power of nature to deliver something in the glass of greater interest than what humankind on its own could offer. Listen on for a brief overview of biodynamics, how science is catching up to the sometimes fantastical claims,  the value of certification, the dark side of Steiner's  beliefs and finding balance in nature.

Welcome back to another episode of The Everyday Wine Aficionado Podcast, today let me introduce you to Rebekah Wineburg.   Rebekah's passion for winemaking began when at the age of 16 she visited Napa Valley vineyards with her parents. The discussions from their visit left such a lasting impression that she went on to pursue a dual degree in chemistry and biology at Macalester College with the dream of becoming a winemaker. Committing wholeheartedly to her dream, she enrolled in the winemaking program at the University of California, Davis, where she earned her master's degree in viticulture and enology. After completing her MS with a thesis on the effects of winemaking techniques on the phenolic composition of Cabernet Sauvignon, she abandoned the lab and went headfirst into a series of harvests in Italy, Oregon, and New Zealand before settling down in Napa Valley where she has worked and continued to learn winemaking at exceptional producers, such as Staglin Family, Rudd Estate and Buccella Wines before joining the Quintessa team in 2015.    Let's dive into her wine story!   [00:01 - 13:32] Opening Segment    I introduce our guest for this episode Rebekah tells the story of how she became interested in wine and decided to study it in Italy Quintessa was a dream to Rebekah until she was introduced and hired to work there   [13:33 - 23:57] Growing a Brand from the Ground Up while Developing a Top Tier Winemaking Program    Rebekah started Post and Vine because he was fascinated by the vineyards and wanted to learn more about winemaking herself Wine should be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of their dining situation or table setting Sourcing food can be a challenge, but with experience and a good relationship with the farmer, it becomes easier. Organic farming is better for the environment and that biodynamics is a philosophy that guides the relationship between the farmer and their land.   [23:58 - 37:03] Old Vines and New Wines   Old vines are the privileged terroir and you don't have to do operations or force things to happen to make great wine Some trends to watch out for in making wine in Napa Valley include climate change, increasing demand, and the growth of digital marketing [37:04 - 41:11] Closing Segment    Learn everything you need to grow your wine, business, or brand with Wine Business Bootcamp where I help other wine producers like yourself, master the fundamentals of digital marketing, nail their customer experience, and convert more wine tasters into their wine clubs and other offers. James discusses Napa's 2019 vintage with Rebekah Wineburg, the winemaker at Quintessa, and Rodrigo Soto, the estate director."'19 is I think one of the most gracious vintages we've ever received," Rebekah tells James. "It had the right amount of rainfall at the beginning of the season," although there was delayed bud break compared with 2018. "But everything caught up with a nice, warm summer, and canopies were balanced, fruit level was balanced, crop load was balanced, and you just flew into another incredible, long, precise, gentle harvest. It's hard not to give too many superlatives to 2019."Adds Rodrigo: "Yields were lower than '18 as well, so that helps with the concentration... Sometimes it's hard to find the points of difference, but clearly the yield was one of them, and of course that brings a different level of concentration to the wine. So out of a very smooth vintage in terms of temperatures, you realize that you have a little extra power, and it makes the wines absolutely fantastic."

Sofía Araya  - head winemaker of Veramonte, Ritual, Primus, and Neyen Sofía Araya was born and raised in Chile and she has made wine in nearly every high quality valley of the country since she graduated from la Universidad de Chile. After years of working on conventional farms for some big names, she moved to Veramonte. She helped transition the over 500 ha/1,235 acres to 100% ECOCERT certified organic vineyards. Veramonte represents 15% of all organic vineyards in Chile.   Sofía is now the head winemaker and oversees the organic Veramonte and Ritual and the organic and biodynamic properties of Neyen and Primus.  All are under the umbrella of Sherry-based Gonzalez Byass.   Although this may seem like a mega-brand because of its excellent distribution, it actually turns out that Veramonte and its sister brands – Ritual, Primus, and Neyen – make just 200,000 cases of wine a year (2.4 million bottles) combined. That's the size of a medium brand at a big hulking winery!   Two things that are important: 1. Sofía and I jump right in on the geography. It may be helpful to follow along with the WFNP map or to listen to this podcast we did on Chile before you listen. (You can listen to this on the Casablanca Valley, this on Maipo, and this on Rapel if you really want extra credit!) 2. A summary of the brands to keep it all straight: Veramonte: Cool climate Casablanca and Colchagua wines for everyday consumption. Pop and pour! Ritual: Also from Casablanca, and only Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot. These are more food wines, with stronger tannin, and fuller body. They are a bit more terroir driven. Primus: The same idea as Ritual but these wines are bolder reds. There is a red blend and a Carménère from Apalta in Colchagua, and a Cabernet Sauvignon from Maipo. Neyen: The signature, high-end blend, sourced from their top site in Apalta.   Here are the points we cover: Sofia tells us about her life and career. She talks about working for Casa Lapostolle and Luis Felipe Edwards in the Colchagua Valley, and Arestí in Curicó.   We get the history of Viñedos Veramonte and how Sofía was a major part of its transition to organics. We discuss some of the exciting things about the transition and some of the more difficult ones (including a change in mindset. **Sofía mentions Flowers and Quintessa as being brands owned by Augustin Hunneus. Flowers is a Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir brand, Quintessa is a Napa-based mainly Cabernet-based brand. Both are biodynamic and both are very pricey).   We discuss the Casablanca Valley at length – its surprisingly cool climate, how it developed through the 1990s and 2000, and the very pure fruit flavors that she is able to achieve in the wines made here: Ritual and Veramonte. We discuss the reds of the region, the different flavor profiles they can achieve in this area, and why they are successful in Casablanca. Sofía discusses Colchagua and why the Carmenére is so good from this area. We discuss the sub areas of Apalta and Marchigue (pronounced mar-Chee-way) from which Primus and Neyen are sourced. We discuss what makes Neyen, their flagship wine, so special.   Since Primus Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from the Maipo Valley, we also discuss this beautiful, famed area. We mention the Maipo Alto, Maipo Medio, and Maipo Bajo as being diverse   Sofía schools us on why Chilean wine is an incredible value for the money and why price doesn't always mean quality, especially where Chile is concerned.   ____________________________________________________________ Thanks for our sponsors this week: Wine Access: Access to the best wines for the best prices! How do you pair wine with burgers? What is it about California that gives us such a wide variety of wine? How is the Napa Valley food scene? What restaurant industry lessons help Joel make better wine? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Joel Gott, owner and winemaker at Joel Gott Wines. You can find the wines we discussed at www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks.   Highlights When will you see the most "action" at a winery? What facts might you be surprised to learn about Napa Valley? Which highly-acclaimed restaurants should you visit on your next trip to Napa Valley? How did in-bottle refermentation create the worst moment of Joel's career? What exciting moment did Joel experience while flying over the Pacific? What makes Three Thieves Wines unique? Who are the people you need to know behind Three Thieves Wines? How does the growing environment translate into what you taste in Three Thieves Pinot Grigio and Cabernet Sauvignon? What tasting notes will you encounter with Three Thieves Wines? Why does Joel Gott describe his restaurants as "the low end of the high end or the high end of the low end"? Can you pair Three Thieves Cabernet Sauvignon with a burger? Which wine can you pair with a kimchi burger? Why is Zinfandel a safe bet to pair with many foods? Which of Joel Gott's wines would you find to be the most complicated? What French influence might you notice in Joel Gott Wines Unoaked Chardonnay? Which Gott's Roadside burgers should you pair with Joel Gott Wines Unoaked Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Merlot? Is Joel Gott Wines Cabernet Sauvignon a good addition to your cellar? Why should you shop by vintage instead of by brands? What advantages do women winemakers bring to the table? Why do you find such a wide variety of wine styles out of California alone? What are Joel's top tips for improving your wine experience this week?   Key Takeaways Shop for great vintages first rather than brands. You can find so many gems this way, often underpriced too. The excitement of the harvest is often the spark that ignites a passion to make wine. So much of an entire year’s work depends on just a few weeks -- it’s nerve-wracking and exhilarating. Pairing ideas for gourmet burgers from Cabernet with a classic cheeseburger to Zinfandel for racier burgs like kimchi with pickled veggies and spicy aioli or green chili and jack cheese. The sweet fruit and spice of the zin is a great match for the spice and salt in the burgers and fixin's. Corked wine can ruin the reputation of a winery with a customer for good and a screw cap is able to seal a moment in time, especially the freshness of a sauvignon blanc.   About Joel Gott While running Palisades Market in Calistoga in the early 1990s, Joel Gott noticed a growing need for quality, value wines. Having worked at Kenwood Winery in Sonoma County, and with a family history in the business, Joel felt sure he could fill this void in the marketplace. In 1996, Joel purchased a few tons of Zinfandel from family friend and grape grower Tom Dillian. With the help of then-girlfriend—and winemaker at Joseph Phelps—Sarah, Joel produced his first vintage of Dillian Ranch Amador County Zinfandel. The wine received praise from Robert Parker and Wine Spectator, which was all the encouragement Joel needed to produce additional varietals. A Sauvignon Blanc followed in 1998, and the year after he and Sarah produced California appellation Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon by shopping the entire state for the best fruit, creating a wine shaped by various regions instead of a single estate. This style and commitment to quality wines blended from hand-selected vineyards helped guide the direction of Joel Gott Wines. In 2003, 815 was added to the California Cabernet Sauvignon label to celebrate the birth of Joel and his wife Sarah’s first daughter Lucy on August 15th. That same year, Alisa Jacobson was hired as the assistant winemaker, and the following year Sarah left her position as winemaker at Quintessa to focus on a growing family and winemaking at Joel Gott Wines.     To learn more about the resources mentioned in this episode, visit the https://www.nataliemaclean.com/106.

On Episode 175 of the Seibertron.com Twincast Podcast, titled "Bayhem," the group first discusses the new international trailer for Michael Bay's Transformers: The Last Knight that was released May 18, including plot points, characters, and other new information. Articles interviewing Ian Bryce, the producer for The Last Knight, as well as the movie writers, is also discussed at length. The conversations move to international promotions for the movie, including a Coca-Cola raffle in China, a Coca-Cola steelcase promo in Singapore, and 7-11 Japan's exclusive Dark Optimus Prime figure. International distribution and international collector habits are examined in the context of marketing. Following this movie discussion, the group moves on to a comics conversation involving Lost Light #5 and Optimus Prime #7. The crew of the Lost Light find themselves in a functionist alternate universe, and the group takes a close look both at Rung's newfound abilities, as well as at Megatron and the dueling consciences he has found in Terminus and his more recent shipmates. In the latter comic, Optimus Prime embarks on his own evolution as a leader, and the podcast crew gets into the 'humanity' of the Prime, as well as the growing rivalry between the eponymous Autobot leader and the torchbearer Pyra Magna. The podcast ends with a freestyle segment, wherein each cast member discusses a topic of their choice.

Impressions of the footage shown at this past week's IMAX Fan Event preview are discussed, along with the special trip Seibertron.com's owner got to experience. After a long look at these topics, some of the upcoming toys to support the film are discussed, including the recently seen Voyager Class Nitro, Deluxe Class Skullitron, and the speculative look at Cogman. Kabam's mobile platform fighting video game, Transformers: Forged to Fight has launched, and the cast members that have already started on this latest adventure fill in listeners on what they can expect from this game. A brief discussion about the IDW Hasbro Universe then occurs, including reasons why Transformers fans can enjoy those comics on their own without needing to necessarily follow other Hasbro property series. The show wraps up with a long 'freestyle' segment, where cast members can bring up any topic they choose. This ends up including things ranging from the recently released Masterpiece MP-36 Megatron from Takara Tomy, and even 3D printing and how that could affect the future of the Transformers brand.

I had a feeling of great anticipation before meeting this international wine icon. Agustin Huneeus began his career by saving Concha y Toro in Chile, a brand now recognized across the globe. He also worked for Seagram's, eventually overseeing their international brands. That position brought him to Napa Valley which led to his decision to get back into running his own winery again. He's done very well and continues to do so at Quintessa and with other successful wineries here and in Chile. Like me, I'm sure you'll be captivated by his voice which resonates with the wisdom he has gained and the miles of dusty roads he has traveled.
