This is the third episode in the WGA inspired mini-season. A break from the usual "Directors on Directing," this season is focused on the granular mechanics screenwriting. Each of these conversations were recorded as a part of a remote writer's group that I ran in early 2020. Though they weren't ever intended to be released publicly - given the WGA (and now SAG) strikes, I thought it would be a small act of solidarity to bring our attention back to the work that goes into the creation of the screenplay This episode features a conversation with BASSAM TARIQ. Bassam was born in Karachi, Pakistan, and later migrated to the United States, where he grew up in Queens, New York. His dual-cultural upbringing significantly influenced his work, providing him a distinctive lens through which to explore and portray complex issues related to identity, belonging, and the immigrant experience. Tariq's debut feature film, "These Birds Walk," premiered at South by Southwest in 2013 and was named one of the best indie films of the year by The New Yorker. In 2019, he directed "The Ghosts of Sugarland" - a documentary short he wrote and directed about his post-9/11 high school experience. The film premiered at Sundance in 2019. He then directed "Mogul Mowgli" in 2020, starring Riz Ahmed, which earned rave reviews for its exploration of diaspora identity and the physical and emotional toll of ambition. The film premiered at Berlinale in 2020. Throughout his career, Tariq has consistently demonstrated his ability to deftly intertwine personal narratives with broader societal themes and his profound dedication to storytelling continues to resonate powerfully in the work he creates. In this conversation we specifically discuss page count, finding and maintaining a "voice", the movement from documentary to narrative storytelling, and the importance of protecting your vision.
We're back! Not for Season 2, which is currently in production, but rather, a short mini-season that emerged out of a writers group that I ran back in the early days of the lockdown in 2020. Every week, around 30 filmmakers would gather on zoom as I interviewed writers, directors, actors, and cinematographers about their own experiences with writing, reading, or breaking down scripts for production. Then our guest would leave and we would split into smaller groups to each work on our own screenplays. It was an incredible few months and each week, those conversations about writing became something we all looked forward to. We spent our time observing, from all directions, the multidimensional effort it takes to write a compelling screenplay. Then, years later, the writer's strike. And suddenly these interviews intended for this smaller group feel relevant in a new way. They're conversations full of affection for the process of *writing* a screenplay as well as admiration for the efforts that writers bring to their work and to our business. I can't think of a better time to focus our attention on the core component of narrative storytelling. So, in a small act of solidarity with the (currently-striking) WGA, I wanted to release a few conversations from that writers group. Some names may be familiar to you if you listened to Season One of the Process Dispatch. Others are new. But each brings a unique perspective to the process of writing screenplays. My STAGES co-writers, Dan Steele and Bradley Jackson. Bassam Tariq. Morgan Cooper. Nikyatu Jusu. Anthony Ramos, Marc Menchaca, and Natalie Kingston. It's going to be great. First episode drops Thursday 6/29/23.
Nearly every one of these episodes has a *Recorded in 2020* as a disclaimer in the show notes. So - the obvious question: why in the world did it take so long to put these conversations out?? The short answer: I got stuck. And getting unstuck was a multi-step process. First, my friend Jake McMullen came alongside me and began editing the episodes and generating the original music. Anna Remus came along to help put a schedule to the process. And suddenly, the episodes were done and ready...except for all the intros/outros. I recorded a scripted version and it didn't feel right. But then I got stuck again. So in a flailing effort to get unstuck, I put out an IG message asking for someone to jump on a Zoom with me and simply be on the other end of the call while I tried to record the intros off the cuff. But it turned into something much more than intro/outro - it turned into a deep conversation about why and how we get stuck sometimes and how we might find a way out of the maze. Thanks to Meredith Adelaide and Raul Serpas for jumping on that zoom call and helping me process this project on a macro scale. I'm eternally grateful for the final push. As I listened back, I realized I couldn't use it for intro/outro as planned, but it might actually be worth sharing as a way to connect with any of you who have ever had trouble "shipping." Thanks for listening to this season and look forward to bringing you more conversations soon enough.
This episode is a continuation of my conversation with Bassam Tariq. We pick it up where we left off last week, specifically beginning with the production of his first narrative feature, MOGUL MOWGLI. I would *highly* recommend watching that film as context for this episode. We dive quite deeply into the highs and lows of the process of making that film, working with actors, and trusting your intuition even when it gets difficult. Again, I couldn't be more thankful for Bassam's honesty and vulnerability in sharing about the making of the film. It's rare to get this level of insight into what is so often a complex and difficult process. Recorded in the middle of the night in the summer of 2020.
For the next conversation in this series, I couldn't think of a director I was more eager to speak with than Bassam Tariq. Bassam is on of the most thoughtful, truthful, and talented directors that I've had the chance to meet. We speak about his journey into filmmaking as a Muslim kid in post 9-11 America, his documentary feature THESE BIRDS WALK, and the evolution of his work from documentary into narrative as he prepared to make his debut feature with Riz Ahmed, MOGUL MOWGLI. We recorded this conversation in May of 2020 - long before any Marvel announcements occurred, so we don't touch on that particular project in this interview. Rather - we focus on Bassam's intention behind his work and how filmmaking is his way of being of service. When Bassam and I speak, we tend to go for hours and hours. This conversation was no exception. We started late, after our families had gone to sleep and talked late into the night. As such, I'm going to split this conversation into two parts. The first takes us to Mogul and the second, releasing next week, focuses on the specific process of making that film. I'm incredibly thankful to Bassam for his openness and honesty and hope you walk away encouraged by this conversation.

The 13-nation OPEC cartel and its 10 allies angered the White House last week with its decision to cut production by two million barrels a day, raising fears that oil prices could soar. India on Wednesday halted production of these syrups at the factory. *) Disney pushes back several Marvel movie release dates Walt Disney has announced that it will be pushing back the release dates for numerous upcoming Marvel films including, "Blade," "Fantastic Four" and "Avengers: Secret Wars." Following "Blade" director Bassam Tariq's departure from the project in September, Marvel has decided to temporarily shut down production of the film to search for a new director. The film is set to star Mahershala Ali in the title role, alongside a cast that includes Delroy Lindo and Aaron Pierre. Although he will no longer be helming “Blade,” sources close to the situation state that Tariq will remain attached to the project as an executive producer. Hugh Jackman Is Back as Wolverine in ‘Deadpool 3' With Ryan Reynolds, Coming in 2024 https://variety.com/2022/film/news/deadpool-3-hugh-jackman-wolverine-1235385694/ Hugh Jackman will be back as Wolverine in “Deadpool 3,” Ryan Reynolds announced on his social media Tuesday afternoon. “Deadpool 3” also has an official release date: Sept. 6, 2024. “Hey everyone, we're extremely sad to have missed D23, but we've been working very hard on the next ‘Deadpool' film for a good long while now,” Reynolds says in the video, referencing the D23 Expo in early September. “I've had to really search my soul on this one. His first appearance in the MCU obviously needs to feel special. We need to stay true to the character, find new depth, motivation, meaning. Every ‘Deadpool' needs to stand out and stand apart. It's been an incredible challenge that has forced me to reach down deep inside. And I…I have nothing. Yeah, just completely empty up here. And terrifying. But we did have one idea.” “Hey, Hugh, you want to play Wolverine one more time?” Reynolds asks as Jackman walks by in the background. “Yeah, sure, Ryan,” Jackman replies. The video ends with Whitney Houston's “I Will Always Love You” — subtitled as “I will always love Hugh” — and a “Coming Hughn” teaser. The Deadpool logo appears, then is quickly sliced up by Wolverine's adamantium claws. OUTRO AND BONUS AUDIO [56:50] We would love to hear back from you! Welcome to Neo-Reality Collective | Pop-Culture News and Reviews Talk, Hosted by Eric Brown! In the Fifty-Third Episode, Ryan Reynolds shocks the world by revealing in his emotional video about the production of Deadpool 3, set for release on September 6th, 2024, that Hugh Jackman will return to the role of Wolverine from The X-Men Fox Franchise after being killed off in the emotional farewell film, LOGAN, whom its director promises fans he isn't mad about. They promptly give their massive explanation as to why and how Wolverine is back in Deadpool 3; while that's happening, Overwatch 2 puts new players at a disadvantage by locking out the classic Overwatch heroes unless they complete 100 matches because, of course, Blizzard needs to continuously shoot themselves in the foot amongst the mountain of problems they already find themselves these days, meanwhile, Marvel Studio's BLADE loses its director, Bassam Tariq, due to continued shifts in the production's schedule, which the central star, Mahershala Ali, is reportedly very frustrated with. Marvel also shifts plans for the Armor Wars Disney+ series to become a full-length film released in theaters as WarnerBros. Discovery shocks the entertainment world with good news and their full support in the Blue Beetle Movie! The alleged 17-Year-Old GTA 6 Hacker has pled Not Guilty to the crimes they've been accused of and awaits trial. With the announcement of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine returning, Elizabeth Olsen, MCU's Scarlet Witch, spoke in an interview about how she would want her character to team up with the X-Men in a future film. And lastly, Google Stadia, the maligned cloud gaming streaming service, has announced plans to wind down and eventually discontinue entirely in January of 2023, offering full refunds to consumers of the service. Welcome to The Process Dispatch. Conversations with directors about directing feature films. What began as a plan to record and release episodes in quick succession somehow became a multiyear process. As a result, the first five episodes of this podcast, all recorded in the summer of 2020, have become a time capsule of sorts - recorded before this season's directors released the work you likely know them for. But there is something special about speaking specifically to process *before* success arrives. So, before moving on to more current conversations, I want to present these five episodes as a way to frame the broader intent of this series. Welcome to The Process Dispatch. Featuring: 001 - The Daniels (Everything Everywhere All At Once) 002 - Bassam Tariq (Mogul Mowgli x BLADE) 003 - Nikyatu Jusu (Nanny) 004 - Jonathan & Josh Baker (aka TWIN) (KIN) 005 - Ricky Staub (Concrete Cowboy)

In the film Mogul Mowgli, Riz Ahmed stars as Zed, an on-the-rise rapper whose biggest gig yet is threatened by the sudden onset of an illness. He's also forced to confront his own insecurities about his family and British-Pakistani identity. Ahmed co-wrote the movie along with the director Bassam Tariq, and the result is a compelling and surprising story that dances between fiction and autobiography, realism and fantasy.
[REBROADCAST FROM September 13, 2021] A new film tells the story of a British Pakistani rapper whose path to stardom is jeopardized by a serious illness. Riz Ahmed, who co-wrote and stars in the film, and Bassam Tariq, who co-wrote and directed, join us to discuss the movie, “Mogul Mowgli.”
Today we're joined by the multi-talented Riz Ahmed. Riz is not only an award-winning actor known for roles in films like Four Lions, Nightcrawler, Sound of Metal and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – he's also a gifted musician, and a prominent voice for change in the film industry, frequently advocating for a more diverse range of stories and storytellers. Last year, he added screenwriter to his lengthy list of talents with the mesmerising Mogul Mowgli – a dark drama about a British-Pakistani rapper who suffers the sudden onset of a debilitating autoimmune disease. Zed – played by Ahmed – is a talented MC hungry for fame but growing disconnected from his roots, when illness sends him spiralling into a string of dangerous hallucinations, stalked every step of the way by a mysterious masked figure with links to Pakistan's past.Co-written by director Bassam Tariq, the film won huge critical acclaim for its intimacy, imagination and ambition, innovatively weaving in songs from an accompanying concept album that Riz released roughly in tandem with Mogul Mowgli. In this episode, he tells us about his relationship with writing and the parts of his own life he brought to the screen in this deeply personal movie. We also talk about the film's prescient echoes of the Covid-19 pandemic and why “our scars can be a road map to our creativity” as Riz so beautifully puts it. Do make sure you've seen Mogul Mowgli before listening in, as this is a spoiler-filled conversation exploring all of the movie's major plot points. Once you have, come back and brace yourself for a fascinating insight into what for my money is one of the best movies of the past 12 months.Support for this episode comes from Screencraft, Caveday and WeScreenplay.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek, with music from Stefan Bindley-Taylor. In today's episode, Film Forum presents a Q&A with filmmaker Bassam Tariq and star Riz Ahmed from the opening night of their acclaimed new drama MOGUL MOWGLI on September 3. In the film, Ahmed (who also produced and co-wrote the film with Tariq) gives a tour-de-force performance as a British Pakistani rapper whose successful career is threatened by a sudden illness that forces him to reckon with his own family, identity, and heritage. The Q&A was moderated by Shaka King, filmmaker of last year's Oscar-nominated JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH.
A new film tells the story of a British Pakistani rapper whose path to stardom is jeopardized by a serious illness. Riz Ahmed, who co-wrote and stars in the film, and Bassam Tariq, who co-wrote and directed, join us to discuss the movie, “Mogul Mowgli.”
Bassam Tariq's narrative feature debut, MOGUL MOWGLI is a bold, vital and electrifying exploration of heritage and identity. Coming off his historic Academy Award Best Actor nomination for SOUND OF METAL, Riz Ahmed, inhabits the character of Zed or Zaheer, a British Pakistani rapper, who, on the brink of his first international tour decides to fly home to the UK to visit the family he has not seen in two years. In the midst of his attempt to reconnect with his parents, particularly his father, he is suddenly struck down by an autoimmune disease. As his condition worsens and his big breakthrough moment is in danger of vanishing into thin air, Zed descends into a physical and emotional crisis, amplified by vivid hallucinations. MOGUL MOWGLI was recently nominated for Best British Film at the 2021 BAFTA and received six 2020 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) nominations, with Ahmed winning Best Debut Screenwriter. Ahmed won the 41st London Critics' Circle Film Award for British/Irish Actor of the Year (for body of work) for performances including Zed in MOGUL MOWGLI. Director and writer Bassam Tariq stops by for a conversation on the challenge of navigating the multiple worlds that Zed lives in, collaborating with Riz Ahmed and incorporating the lessons learned from his work in documentary filmmaking into the world of narrative story-telling. As a rapper, Riz Ahmed has released critically acclaimed albums, and he was featured on the chart-topping “Hamilton Mixtape.” At the same time, he was becoming a leading man in the movies, with roles including a small part in the Star Wars picture “Rogue One” and an extraordinary, Oscar-nominated performance in “Sound of Metal.” Like his previous film, “Mogul Mowgli” is about a musical artist facing a health crisis that could end his career. Ahmed stars as the British-Pakistani rapper Zaheer—stage name Zed—and he co-wrote the film with Bassam Tariq. “It was very much a kind of inward journey,” Ahmed tells David Remnick. “It was very much about holding up a mirror and hoping that in the honesty and the vulnerability of that exercise, people would just connect emotionally—even if they couldn't necessarily connect to the specificity of the experience. But for those who could connect to that specificity, you would be, like, ‘Jesus Christ, I never thought I'd see that onscreen!' ”
Bassam Tariq joins The Playlist Podcast to talk about “Mogul Mowgli,” which marks the filmmaker's narrative feature debut. We talk about the extensive editing process, the director's relationship with Riz Ahmed, and what led to them working together on this film. And yes, we definitely do talk about Tariq's upcoming project, the new “Blade” reboot from Marvel Studios starring Mahershala Ali. While he can't give us many details, he does talk about his surprise at landing the gig and what he hopes to bring to the franchise. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/message

Mogul Mowgli is a great film that serves as an introspection into what it means to be successful and the costs with setting the definition of success based on one's own insecurities. Riz Ahmed plays a Pakistani rapper named Zed, whose dreams are crushed when he's diagnosed with a degenerative autoimmune disease . This isn't the first time Ahmed has played a musician who is left to contemplate his future because his body has betrayed him. In the Sound of Metal, he plays a drummer who loses his hearing and is forced to come to terms with his new reality. In Mogul Mowgli, in addition to coming to terms with his condition, Zed also has to confront and face his own internal struggles with his cultural upbringing and relationship with his father. This is Bassam Tariq's first feature film as a director and it's a very impressive first time out. Tariq is rumored to be in negotiations to direct Marvel Studio's Blade which would not only be a great choice but fit the Marvel Studios pattern of getting talented directors before they really blow up. This film is shot and put together wonderfully to tell an engaging and at times heartbreaking story. If the goal was to illicit emotions from the audience, then this film will do it. While the film leans heavily on Riz Ahmed to carry the narrative of the film, the rest of the cast does exactly what is needed. Alyy Khan is great casting for Bashir, Zed's father. Khan is the overbearing father who comes off as strict and not as loving but in reality loves his son more than his son realizes. There are some really great scenes between Ahmed and Khan that really cut to the heart of what this film is trying to convene. Nabhaan Rizwan also deserves create for playing RPG. He's infuriatingly ridiculous and offers a great look at why Zed is pushing so hard to get back on his feet but also has us asking what is the true definition of success. Mogul Mowgli is definitely a film to check out once it becomes available. It seems as if Ahmed is really in his element with these films and telling them through characters that are musicians. Maybe part of this is working through is own feelings with his own music. Whatever the reason, it works and he should keep it up. This week we breech the divides of social distancing and isolation by reaching out to Bassam Tariq, a Pakistani-American filmmaker whose latest project Mogul Mowgli, starring Riz Ahmed, recently premiered at the Berlinale Film Festival. In this conversation, Bassam and Imran examine how traces of religion, tradition, and history bleed together and form a voice for the South Asian diaspora. Though Bassam shares with us the difficulties of being a filmmaker with integrity, he also reminds us of our imperfection. We trip up and turn back to the One who is Perfect. This is the non-linear, vulnerable, and vibrant spiritual path of the artist. While the life of the artist can be a lonely at times, Bassam celebrates the cities and communities that support, challenge, and inform his art.Produced by: Imran Ali Malik and Zahra Parekh.More about Bassam Tariq: www.bassa.msSupport this podcast: patreon.com/submittter
