HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersPreparing for a debut album - for any band - is an arduous task. Once you make that firm decision and commit to laying down your tracks for others to digest, it seems like, in many respects, everything is violently taken from your control and placed at the mercy of others. As such, it would be easy - and almost forgivable - to take the easier path, whatever that may be. Safe songs, safe structure, proven methods and carefully mapped out schedules, but at what cost? You only get one chance to release a debut album, and in many ways that one album can define the rest of your musical career.Which is why a large number of bands take the safe passage. Or at least their version of it, which invariably leads to a more polished and socially acceptable offering of music from the lyrics all the way down to presentation. But every once in a while you come across a band who throw caution to the wind and leave themselves and their music exposed as they let their fledgling work of art loose on the world. A band who are unashamed to leave large chunks of their own DNA splattered throughout the release, thus laying bare their innermost emotions and thoughts. It is a brave and increasingly fading approach, but has also become so much more noticeable in what is fast becoming a saturated market where different often equates to good.So it is with Melbourne-based post-punk, Midwest emo outfit Gypsy Road who have laid their souls on open display with their debut album Letters To A Friend, From Interstate which is released on May 24. An exhaustive and confronting collection of eight songs highlighting the emotional struggles confronted by the band throughout the entire process, Letters To A Friend, From Interstate captures a band unafraid to admit not having the answers and honest enough to concede defeat. It is an eclectic and refreshing journey through a myriad of genres that are woven together in a sonic tapestry that drips with vulnerability yet exudes an air of confidence that suggests a strong future.HEAVY caught up with frontman Alex Centofanti to find out more, asking if he is nervous, excited, anxious or all three together as Friday's release date approaches."All of the above," he laughed. "For so many multiple reasons. The last three singles we have released - which actually have been our first ever singles because before that we released three EP's - has been a new experience for me and pretty nerve-wracking. Those songs have actually done the best for any releases we have done. That's why it's also anxious, nervous and excited. I'm hoping that it translates to the album. It's one of those things where you get worried that when you release a couple of songs people aren't going to listen to the full album, so I'm hoping they make it through the whole thing because I think it's pretty good (laughs)."We press Alex on the musical side of the album and what Gypsy Road were going for sonically."I was going for quite a few things," he measured. "I was going for a heavier sound than I've ever done before. I was going for a lot more… I wouldn't say a darker sound, but I was definitely going for that melancholy vibe. I was really just trying to make it sound how I felt at the time."In the full interview, Alex talks more about the musicality on Letters To A Friend, From Interstate, what sorts of things they did as a band in preparation for their debut offering, how they will gauge the success of the album, the emotional side of the music and committing that to paper, some of the themes and lyrical content covered, future planning in terms of musical growth, upcoming gigs and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

One of the big acts on the 80's glam metal scene was Cinderella. Ā Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tom Keifer and bassist Eric Brittingham formed the band in suburban Philadelphia. Ā Gene Simmons of Kiss tried to get the band a deal with PolyGram, but was unsuccessful at getting the label to take interest. Ā Jon Bon Jovi was more successful with getting them a contract with Mercury/Polygram Records. Ā Keifer and Brittingham added guitarist Jeff LaBar and drummer Jim Drnec to the band. Ā Their debut album entitled Night Songs was released in 1986, and it achieved triple platinum status. Ā Shortly after the recording of that album, Jim Drnec left the group. Ā This, their follow-up album Long Cold Winter, would continue the band's progression in the glam metal genre, but would see a subtle shift towards more blues rock. Ā It would also see the introduction of Fred Coury as drummer for the group, though this would come after the album was recorded utilizing percussionist Cozy Powell for almost all tracks on the album. Ā This second studio album would be a commercial success as well, reaching number 10 on the US charts and achieving double platinum status before the end of the year. Ā The album included the rock ballad ā€œDon't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone),ā€which would reach number 12 on the Billboard charts, the highest charting single for the band. Ā Video was a significant factor in the success of the band, and they released a video compilation in 1990 called ā€œTales from the Gypsy Roadā€ featuring their promo videos and live medleys.Cinderella would be predominantly an opening band through the late 80's and early 90's, touring with Poison, Bon Jovi, and David Lee Roth. Ā Unfortunately the band would decline by the mid 90's due to various setbacks and drama with personnel as well as shifting popularity in the music industry. Ā Their last performance was in 2014.Break out the hair spray as Wayne leads us through this album.Ā Bad Seamstress Blues/Fallin' Apart at the SeamsThe leading track to the album starts with an acoustic blues number paired with a heavier blues song, complete with slide guitar and harmonica. Ā The lyrics are of a life that has come full circle. Ā No regrets, but a mixture of success and sorrow. Ā ā€œLook in the mirror at what I found, It's just the past and it's over now.ā€Gypsy RoadThese lyrics discuss perseverance to achieve success, but also the loneliness and doubt that come with realizing that dream. Ā The song is a composite of a life on the road, complete with hotel rooms and overnight rides on the tour bus. Ā This song hit number 51 on the Billboard Hot 100.Take Me BackThe final song on the album features blues instrumentation including the slide guitar and more cow bell! Ā The lyrics reflect on a younger life from a distance. Ā The singer reminisces about how he was raised and wanting to be reminded of what he left behind.Ā ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Axel F (Main Theme from the motion picture ā€œBeverly Hills Copā€)This movie from the mid-80's made its debut on network TV this month.Ā STAFF PICKS:Electric Blue by IcehouseLynch gives us a cool start to the staff picks with Australian band Icehouse's biggest US hit. Ā The lyrics tell the tale of a man pursuing the love of a woman who seems above his station. Ā ā€œIcehouseā€ is an Aussie slang term for an insane asylum. Ā This song was written by lead singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Iva Davies, and Jon Oates of Hall & Oates fame.Heaven Tonight by Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising ForceBruce features neoclassical metal guitar virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen paired with the vocals of former Rainbow and Deep Purple front man Joe Lynn Turner. Ā This is off Malmsteen's fourth studio album, ā€œOdyssey.ā€ This album went to number 40 on the Billboard 200 charts, the highest charting Malmsteen album to date.Wait by WhiteĀ LionĀ Rob brings us a power ballad that peaked at number 8 on the US charts in May 1988. Ā It was originally released in June 1987, but did not enter the charts until February 1988, based on the strength of their video on MTV. Ā The video featured Christie Muhaw who died at the age of 24 in a car accident less than a year after the video was released.Damn Good by David Lee RothWayne's staff pick continues the blues focus Ā with a power ballad from Roth and 12-string work by virtuoso Steve Vai. Ā The lyrics were inspired by an encounter Roth had with an old high school friend who had some high school pictures. Ā It is a wistful song remembering friends and good times from the past. Ā Ā NOVELTY TRACK:Killer Klowns by The DickiesWe close out this week's podcast with a track of punk rock's The Dickies. Ā This is off their EP and the movie "Killer Klowns from Outer Space. "

Phil, Jake and Jason are joined by new guest Christina to gussy-up the List of Every Damn Thing by ranking the fictional princess Cinderella, the 80s glam-metal band Cinderella, and the hip-hop trailblazer Spinderella. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter and Instagram). You can view the full list at everydamnthing.netSHOW NOTES: RIP to Shock G. of Digital Underground, who died not long before we recorded this episode. Jessica Rabbit is considered to be a Disney Princess by us. The character of Cinderella is so unremarkable in the 1950 Disney movie that they don’t even include her as an ingredient in this official trailer. Charles Perrault, who wrote the Cinderella story best-known in contemporary culture, is pretty much the father of the ā€œfairy taleā€ genre. His works-- derived from folk stories-- also include Little Red Riding Hood, Puss In Boots and Sleeping Beauty. As we discuss in this episode, Brandy played Cinderella in the 1997 Rogers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella TV movie. Phil didn't mention it but when his wife listens to "The Boy Is Mine" she agrees that the boy is Brandy's. Jake, however, knows the boy is Monica’s. Jason didn’t mention that Drew Barrymore’s air fryer is part of a Wal-Mart Collection. We mention Princess Diana. You can get the Di-themed Beanie Baby for just $50k on eBay. I Was A Rat by Phillip Pullman is just fantastic. Phil recommends it.Ā  Songs (and music videos) of Cinderella’s that we discuss include ā€œDon’t Know What You Got Till It’s Goneā€ (partly shot in Bodie State Historic Park), ā€œNobody’s Foolā€, ā€œSomebody Save Meā€, ā€œShake Meā€ and ā€œGypsy Roadā€. We also discuss their unremarkable deep-cut ā€œWinds of Changeā€ (not to be confused with ā€œWind of Changeā€ by Scorpions). We engage in a bit of a hot-or-not session with metal guys, including Tom Keifer, Dee Snider, Stephen Pearcy (aka the guy from Ratt),Kevin DuBrow (aka the guy from Quiet Riot), Vince Neil, Brett Micheals, Slash and Jon Bon Jovi. Here's Michael Bivins (of Bell Biv DeVoe) in the video for ā€œMotown Phillyā€ by Boys II Men. Here’s a clip featuring the real voice of Gilbert Gottfried. The video for ā€œFreshā€ by Kool & The Gang is maybe the best interpretation of the Cinderella story and features the best K & the G song too. That's not our opinion, that's a fact. This trailer for the 1977 Cinderella erotic fairy tale movie that Phil saw as a kid acknowledges the foot fetish aspect of the story. The poster art for the movie is pretty great. Jake mentions that Salt-N-Pepa make an appearance in Coming 2 America. Spinderella does not. It looks like Hurby ā€œLuv Bugā€ Azor was, in fact, in a relationship with Salt for a while in the 80’s. Jake should really know who Wendy Williams is. Jack Kirby continues to be Phil's example of someone who did work-for-hire in a creative field and didn't get paid. Jake was wrong: Spinderella is credited as a one of the producers on some of Salt-N-Pepa’s albums. But he was right when he guessed that she’s not even a performer on the album that features ā€œPush Itā€. Here’s a clip from the Salt-N-Pepa Lifetime movie. We talk about the NWA song ā€œI Ain’t Tha 1ā€ (written and performed by Ice Cube). The lyrics are troublesome, but tame in comparison to some of his later more misogynistic songs. Ambas bandas celebraban el vigĆ©simo aniversario de sus discos debut, Night Songs y Look What the Cat Dragged In.

Dean Brody's latest album is called Gypsy Road. It’s easily his most winning and original collection of songs, a fact confirmed by the rollicking, sun-drenched first single, ā€˜Upside Down.’ Fitting for a guy already possessed of a boatload of CCMA and JUNO Awards. ā€œā€™Upside Down’ as well as the song ā€˜Monterey’ were written on a ukulele,ā€ Dean explains, adding that the tenderhearted but scorching ā€˜Love Would Be Enough’ was sketched out on a banjo instead of his usual guitar. ā€œThere was a point in my career where it seemed like I had invested what might have been wasted time chasing a dream,ā€ Dean offers with trademark candour. ā€œI saw friends and others my age living the responsible suburban life, 2 cars, a mortgage, retirement savings and vacations days stacking up. And I was spending every dollar on a long shot in a country not my own. I had a small family and at points felt completely irresponsible as a father and husband. Now, we have a home on the ocean. Sometimes I walk the land and sit down by the water and think ā€˜Wow. This dream actually happened. All those hard and lonely times were worth it.ā€™ā€ 2014 found Riki Knox filling her travel book with trips between Toronto and Nashville, and into Western Canada to lay the groundwork for her forthcoming album in 2015. ā€œI wanted to write songs that really spoke to who I am as both an artist and a personā€ she explains. Staying true to that statement, she spent time writing with some very notable songwriters, including Willie Mack (Sara Evans, Collin Raye, The Oakridge Boys, Mark Wills), Jason McCoy (The Road Hammers), Duane Steele, Jake Mathews, Patricia Conroy, and Troy Kokol among others. Her latestĀ single is called Beautiful Thing.

This year, it's the "Gypsy Road to the Final Four" WORST Hair Metal BALLADS of all time. If we have to pick a different Hair Metal "theme" each year, there was no doubt that at some point we would have to discuss the "Ballads" - the inevitable slow tune that every one of those bands had to release after their first rockin' tune was a hit. Well, guess what, ladies - this is the year! But the twist is, we argue for the worst. Strap in!
