Episode 77 - Pack your bags, we're headed to... heaven? Well for week one we are still in Japan, and depending on whether or not you are talking to Marco, it's all the same. Yes, Marco is bringing us a month of Catholic films, and the first one we are watching is Silence (1971) from the director Shinoda. This film is based on a novel which is based on a true story of the persecution of Catholics in feudal Japan, and a foreign priest who is looking for his mentor who went missing. This was remade by Scorcese in 2016 and stars Liam Neeson and Adam Driver, but we are going back to the OG. We went into a bit of a religious vortex so don't miss out on that.and email us at mracfilmclub@gmail.com

George Harrison's tribute to Smokey Robinson, "When Smokey Sings", isn't just Rob Sheffield's favourite solo Beatles tune. The Motown legend, arguably best known for covering "So Bad", is a huge part of "Beatles '64", the Mouse's latest entry in the world of Beatles documentaries. 1964 is THE seminal year in Beatles history, so surely this Scorcese-produced doc provides a comprehensive look at the full year? Clearly, the talking heads are relevant and used sparingly? Obviously, this release comes in concert with expanded, cleaned up footage improving on what we all really want, a reissued "The First U.S. Visit"? Ben and Rob get what they deserve for ‘Joker', Todd Phillips' 2019 character study smuggled into box-office history under a supervillains cape. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Robert DeNiro, Zazie Beetz and Frances Conroy, ‘Joker' tells the story of mentally unwell and financially destitute Arthur Fleck and his journey to become a stand-up comedian; a journey that takes a terrifying wrong turn when Gotham repeatedly turns it back on his suffering. The film lacking an appearance from Batman didn't stop ‘Joker' delighting DC Comics fans as deeply as the critics; becoming the first R rated movie to cross the billion dollar mark at the box office. But how did this seventies morality tale get green-lit in the first place? What inspired Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix as they concocted this beautifully affecting film? Is this film just ripping off Scorcese's ‘King Of Comedy'? The first feature-length movie incorporating synchronized dialogue was The Jazz Singer in 1927. A 20-year stretch, from 1927 to 1948, is considered the Golden Age in the history of Hollywood.

Cathy Moriarty Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Girl Crush! I've had one for years on Academy Award Nominee, Cathy Moriarty, now after spending a virtual hour with her, forgetaboutit! I always knew she was an incredible actress, whether making me laugh or cry, but, what an amazing woman… mother, daughter, loyal friend, and pet rescuer. We talked the Bronx, where we both come from, Alexanders, our mothers, gratefully still with us, Cathy's pre-Pesci discovery acting days… high school drama, plays, dinner theatre, no agent, no professional training, but grabbing stage time wherever she could, auditioning and then a bathing suit contest to win a coveted pair of shoes that would change her stars. The trifecta at 17, the beforementioned Pesci, DeNiro, and Scorcese––Raging Bull. Her first film which led to that Oscar nod, on-the-job master classes, and a friendship with her character's namesake that would last the rest of Vikki LaMotta's lifetime. Neighbors. Belushi's last film. Ackroyd's kindness. All Cathy learned about comedy from them. Soapdish, how she almost didn't get it, who almost did, one of Cathy's favorite films for so many reasons. A horrible car accident, getting back to work… Kindergarten Cop, Forget Paris, Casper, Speilberg, Eric Idle, Copland, Stallone, more DeNiro, Analyze That, and how easy they are together. Despite all the work, Cathy's so un-Hollywood. Unfazed by celebrity and stardom, she dreamt of being a great actress not a movie star. A mother, who loves to cook, and thanks to Marty's mother (Scorcese) she prides herself on making the best sauce and meatballs around, she's also a savvy businesswoman who's owned a few restaurants and very successful pizzerias. We're regulars at the Encino location. There was so much more to talk about than we had time for - there's a slice of pizza in our future… I have witnesses! What started out as respect, and adoration… I adore, more! Arkush intended for a nostalgia-drenched tribute to his teenage years at The Fillmore East in the style of Scorcese's The Last Waltz, the producer wanted a fast and stupid visual comedy in the style of Airplane! and the Executive Producer wanted a movie that was going to fail and fail badly so his tax shelter investors could turn a healthy profit. Somehow, they all got what they wanted in the end. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/bring-me-the-axe/message

From her feature film directorial debut Flamin' Hot, to her career-launching turn as Gabrielle Solis on Desperate Housewives, Eva Longoria has a thing for characters - and people - who get things done. Case in point, Sam “Ace” Rothstein (Robert De Niro), the central character in Martin Scorcese's Casino (1995) who brings hard-won street smarts and ruthless clarity to his job as casino boss. He is less clear-eyed when it comes to his hustler-addict wife (Sharon Stone) and unhinged mafioso best friend (Joe Pesci), both of whom sow chaos with every move. Eva takes us inside the film that brings us the violent, stylish, and desperate world of 1970's Vegas. We learn how Scorcese's filmmaking in Casino inspired many of the techniques she used in Flamin' Hot, how she cut her directing chops, and the parallels she sees between her own Texican heritage and the Italian American experiences at the center of so many of Scorcese's films. Full Hour | In today's second hour, Dom welcomes in Montgomery County Controller Pam Van Blunk, who's currently running for Montgomery County Commissioner, after a long rash of questionable behavior from the County government. Before bringing her on, Dom contextualizes the situation that's played out in Montgomery County, reminding listeners of the power that Valerie Arkoosh had on the decisions during Coronavirus, which led her to a position under Governor Shapiro. Then, in welcoming in Van Blunk, Dom asks for her to summarize her current role as Controller, which leads to questions about her stance on issues, which quickly leads to her stance on criminal justice. Van Blunk tells how the current commissioner stance on policing has led to a spike in crime in her County, and explaining how their decisions regarding funding the Sheriff's department has contributed to her desire to run for this office. Then, Dom delves into the County's decisions concerning Coronavirus, with Van Blunk explaining what she would've pushed for if she were sitting with the other Commissioners during the pandemic. Then, Dom continues the Dom Giordano Program by switching back to breaking some more news regarding election fraud, again telling about the judge decision in Bridgeport, Connecticut concerning their Democratic primary, and now revealing a NJ decision that freezes the bank accounts of a dark money political group that was endorsing a shadow candidate in effort to aid the loss of a Republican. Then, Dom welcomes in media critic Scott Cronick to hear what's worth watching over the weekend. First, Cronick reveals that Killers of the Flower Moon may be the best Martin Scorcese film of all time, and may be one of, if not the best film ever. Then, Dom and Cronick delve into Scorcese's comments on superhero movies, with Cronick telling why Marvel has faltered in recent years after running that gamut of theaters prior to Avengers: Endgame. Also, Cronick offers his opinion on the uber-popular Five Nights at Freddy's, telling why it may be the worst horror film of all-time. (Photo by Getty Images)

David Grann is a staff writer for The New Yorker and the author of two nonfiction books that topped the best-seller list this summer: “The Wager” and “Killers of the Flower Moon,” from 2017, which Martin Scorsese has adapted into a film opening in October. Grann is among the most lauded nonfiction writers at The New Yorker; David Remnick says that “his urge to find unique stories and tell them with rigor and style is rare to the vanishing point.” Grann talks with Remnick about his beginnings as a writer, and about his almost obsessive research and writing process. “The trick is how can you tell a true story using these literary techniques and remain completely factually based,” Grann says. “What I realized as I did this more is that you are an excavator. You aren't imagining the story—you are excavating the story.” Grann recounts travelling in rough seas to the desolate site of the eighteenth-century shipwreck at the heart of “The Wager,” his most recent book, so that he could convey the sailors' despair more accurately. That book is also being made into a film by Scorcese. “It's a learning curve because I've never been in the world of Hollywood,” Grann says. “You're a historical resource. … Once they asked me, ‘What was the lighting in the room?' I thought about it for a long time. That's something I would not need to know, writing a book.” But Grann is glad to be in the hands of an expert, and keep his distance from the process. “I'm not actually interested in making a film,” he admits. “I'm really interested in these stories, and so I love that somebody else with their own vision and intellect is going to draw on these stories and add to our understanding of whatever this work is.”
