This episode is a powerhouse showcase of international talent. IONU, the Russian rock band now lighting up the Shanghai music scene, brings serious energy, passion, and versatility. Known as the house band Red Star's at the iconic Pearl Theatre, they deliver top-tier tribute performances and original music that spans hard rock, funk, pop, and heavy metal. The conversation gives listeners insight into their journey—from Russia to China, from cover shows to crafting their own distinct sound. Their debut album, Poison Waters launched in January 2025, is a testament to their musical range and commitment. The 3 tracks from the podcast are Taste of Love, Simple Song, and Crime. Ksenia's vocals are powerful and dynamic, Eugene's basslines groove hard, Gil drives the rhythm with precision on drums, and Alexander shreds with soul on lead guitar. Their chemistry as a band comes through both in conversation and in every track. @ionu_offical @thepearlshanghai https://tellcraigyourstory.podbean.com https://www.linktr.ee/tellcraigyourstory @tellcraigyourstory #ionu #redstars #russia #thepearlshanghai #pearltheatre #papag #grantoh #tellcraigyourstory #poisonwaters #houseband #hardrock #albumlaunch #tasteoflove #simplesong #crime #shanghaichina #ringnoise #redstars

George was quite busy between "All Things Must Pass" and "The Concert for Bangladesh".      However, many of the things he played on were not under his own name!    We look at two projects where George was a significant contributer: Gary Wright's "Footprint", and Billy Preston's "I Wrote a Simple Song".      Excellent playing, and a link between George's Beatles guitar-playing, his work on "All Things Must Pass", and his turn on John Lennon's "Imagine" (when he finally turned back to his own projects with "Living in the Material World!")

Jessica Stuart is a multi-instrumentalist and an acclaimed songwriter with an international fan base. Not only taking the lead on stage, she's also a skilled producer and in-demand side person working across genres. I've known Jessica for over a decade and have been inspired by her since our collaborations on stage as performing songwriters. I was especially moved when I saw  a documentary she both stars in and composed the soundtrack for. The CBC documentary, spearheaded by Oscar winning director Daniel Roher, follows Jessica's decades-later return to Japan to look for her childhood friend who had mysteriously disappeared. In our chat, she talks about the shock of the film's viral, worldwide reach with millions watching the most intimate moments in her search for someone she thought she'd lost forever. We had so much to catch up on and I was eager to ask Jessica about what she has learned on her way to becoming a top-tier musician, touring internationally and earning big stage opportunities with major musical theatre productions. We talk about what is worth working towards- like better conditions for musicians to be appreciated.  Beyond her creative projects, Jessica opens up about going to therapy and changing her perspective on making confident choices. She told me about how deepening her focus by refusing to compromise on quality has led to both better work life balance and more exciting career opportunities.  We dive into an ongoing success first born from a rejection: her songwriters' residency “JS Presents”, held monthly at Toronto's treasured haven for musicians, the Tranzac Club. She has created a reflective space of her own for her and other songwriters to perform in an intimate “listening room” setting, where artists are given the respect and compensation they deserve- along with the opportunity to world debut a new composition!  Jessica's dedication to building spaces for musicians to feel safe in experimenting and creating shines through wherever she goes. This episode brought back so many music making memories for me, and even if you aren't a musician yourself, I know you'll connect with Jessica's story. - - - When Vancouver-born, guitarist, koto player, vocalist and songwriter Jessica Stuart moved to Toronto, quitting work as vintage clothing buyer for a career in music, her goals were simple – release an album of original songs, hear her music on the radio, and satisfy her wanderlust on tour around the world. Stuart's trio The Jessica Stuart Few checked the final box with their first Asian tour (and Top 40 single in Japan) in 2013, and since then, have played music festivals and been heard on airwaves from Australia to Germany and beyond. Having made a name for herself through signature rhythmic and harmonically adventurous jazzy art pop, Jessica has tapped into a new creative stream under artist name, JESSA, smashing layers of playful guitars, koto and vocals into an indie-jazz-pop package, singing about trying to keep the joy in everyday life while navigating this weird world and all of its curve-balls. Also an in-demand side player, Stuart can be found on stage supporting original artists' projects (i.e. Fefe Dobson; Wild Black; WiztheMC), as member of popular tribute acts (i.e. Idioteque; UK Calling), and as sub guitarist for Mirvish Productions' production of SIX. If you hadn't yet heard Jessica's music through her Best Album win at the Independent Music Awards, her five songs in the finals of the Canadian Songwriting Competition, or the record crushing, tear-jerking CBC documentary about her time living in Japan as a child directed by Academy Award winner Daniel Roher (Finding Fukue, Nov 2018, 14 million + views, featuring Stuart's musical score), then you'll get to know her through her latest full-length album, Simple Songs and newest single, Give It Back, It's Mine. - - - www.jessicastuartmusic.com www.joanbeckowlegacy.com http://www.idioteque.ca/ https://instagram.com/jessicastuartmusic https://www.youtube.com/@JESSAakaJessicaStuartMusic https://www.facebook.com/jessicastuartmusic - - -  Lauren's Best invites you to curiously consider art and life as host, Lauren Best, illuminates the creative process as an entrepreneur, mother and interdisciplinary artist. Host Jeremy C. Park talks with music producer Mario Monterosso, who shares some of his personal background as an Italian guitarist, songwriter and producer who fell in love with Memphis music in 1982 when the rockabilly European revival started and how that led him to move to Memphis, Tennessee in 2016.During the interview, Mario shares how he became inspired by Bobby Darin's 1969 song, Simple Song of Freedom, and how still, after almost 60 years, it is powerfully appropriate for this current moment in history. He talks about spearheading the project to unite Memphis musicians in song in a worldwide humanitarian effort and how the different puzzle pieces came together to produce the song. Many internationally known Memphis musicians, singers and cultural organizations are supporting and part of the effort, including Priscilla Presley, Memphis Queen of Soul Carla Thomas, Kallen Esperian, Rev. Charles Hodges, Dr. Gary Beard, Dr. Keith Norman of First Baptist Church Broad, and Bar-Kays' founding member Larry Dodson. Their combined efforts and talents merged into the name Memphis Freedom Band. Mario also shares how the song will help children's hearts heal all over the world with proceeds from the song benefiting the Novick Cardiac Alliance, which is an organization headquartered in Memphis, that has been working around the world to ensure children with life threatening illnesses continue, despite war, to receive the treatment they need. This non-political project was recorded and filmed at the renowned Sam Phillips Recording Studio in Memphis, with Emmy Award-winning film composer and Grammy-nominated music producer, Scott Bomar, as Recording Engineer. The public is invited to the "unveiling" of the music video on December 20, 2023 from 6-8 PM at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art (www.thebrooks.org/songoffreedom). Mario adds how Marie Pizano and the MVP3 Foundation and MVP3 Records have assisted him in the project and have helped release the song publicly through Select-O-Hits, an American independent record label distributor of music based in Memphis, owned by Sam W. and John Phillips, which was co-founded in 1960 by their father, Tom and uncle, Sam Phillips. Sam Phillips is the founder of the legendary Sun Records, where Elvis, Johnny Cash and many others started their careers.Preview Simple Song of Freedom at https://orcd.co/memphisfreedomband

Happy new moon, everybody!   I have a very special Oscar Encore episode for you today -- in celebration of our guests little-film-that-could EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE scoring 11 (11!) Oscar nominations. Yes, the Oscars goes down in a few weeks on March 12th and it just seems worth pausing on how this remarkable non-sequel, non-superhero, paltry-budged, genre-smashing flick is suddenly poised for recognition in categories like (no biggie!) Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress.... and on and on. Some history! Way back in November 2021 I was in theatres in downtown Toronto and saw a preview for EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE. The trailer blew me away and when I got home I remembered at the beginning it said "A Film By Daniels". Daniels? Who's Daniels!? I started googling and discovered it was two guys named Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert who have been making films together since college. They'd made one feature film before called SWISS ARMY MAN (also known as the 'Daniel Radcliffe Farting Corpse Movie') and a slate of incredible music videos like TONGUES by Joywave, SIMPLE SONG by The Shins, and TURN DOWN FOR WHAT by DJ Snake and Lil Jon ... which has over 1.1 billion views! I fell into a rabbit hole soaking up their incredibly creative, challenging, boundary-pushing art and reached out to Daniel Kwan (@dunkwun) to invite the guys on 3 Books. We started trading long thoughtful emails about formative books while the background buzz on their movie kept building. It started limited runs in New York and LA and the Rotten Tomatoes score was 99%! And then, just a few days before the movie got a national distribution, we sat down for this moment-in-time conversation on 3 Books.   And now: To mark the incredible run the film's had since then we've done a very special edit of the conversation. It's hot! It's tight! It's fresh! It's sizzling! And if after listening to this you want the "Directors Cut" just scroll back to Chapter 101 for the full-length "extra hour" version.   I feel strongly that this is the type of art we need in the world today -- brave, risky, challenging, beautiful, profound. So much of what gets made, especially in the big-budget worlds of film, music, and podcasting, is, you know, repetitive. It's easier! That's what makes what Daniels is doing so important. It's been a massive honor getting to know Daniels "before they were cool" all the way up to this big moment at the Oscars on March 12th.   I hope you enjoy this special Bookmark Episode of 3 Books. Enjoy!

The co-hosts announce that the TSSM podcast, now posting our 146th episode, will begin a hiatus, but all programs and show notes will continue to be archived and accessible. This episode allows Dr. Paul Giesting and Bill Schmitt to look back on their four-and-a-half years of interviews and discussions seeking a greater synthesis of knowledge: an exploration of science and religion, philosophy and spirituality, neuroscience and quantum physics, policies and principles, history and the future, to better understand ourselves and the values and virtues in our lives. Our curiosity and concerns are grounded in our experiences as cradle Catholics, a confidence that faith and reason can grow together as essentials for problem-solving wisdom, and a desire to honor the Church a central source of guidance and continuing growth. Our first episode was posted on April 2, 2018, more than four-and-a-half years ago. We have welcomed a long list of well-known guests with expertise in a variety of fields, seizing the opportunity for rigorous but highly accessible, interdisciplinary and inspirational, conversations that transcend silos of specialization. We are grateful for the grand adventure of pursuing truth and reality, both visible and invisible, with the scholars and thought-leaders who shared their insights. That's So Second Millennium was the first podcast to provide structured news coverage and commentary on the conferences and lectures of the Society of Catholic Scientists, and we interviewed a number of SCS members. Both Paul and Bill have been members of the growing, international organization. Paul, who holds a PhD in Geology from the University of Notre Dame, presented a lecture on uranium and nuclear power at the SCS 2022 conference in Chicago. In this episode, we made references to Billy Joel's “We Didn't Start the Fire” and to “Sing God a Simple Song”—from Leonard Bernstein's We talked about Wyoming Catholic College, where Paul is on the faculty, and we talked Holy Cross College, where Bill taught as an adjunct professor for three semesters before moving from South Bend, IN, to Troy, NY, in 2022. Both solidly Catholic colleges, we agreed, excel in their efforts to integrate the different aspects of our humanity and the various forms of knowledge within the hearts and minds of students. Paul and Bill are inveterate Catholic communicators and educators. Learn more about Paul's background in teaching, consulting, and public service. Learn more about Bill's life as writer-editor, broadcaster-blogger, and author. Here are some of the people we have been privileged to interview: SCS president Stephen Barr; planetary scientist Jonathan Lunine; astrophysicist and astronomer Brother Guy Consolmagno, SJ; theologian Paul Seongh Chung; Magis Center president and EWTN series host Father Robert Spitzer, SJ; astrochemist Karin Oberg; neurobiologist Maureen Condic; speaker-evangelist Deacon Harold Burke-Sivers; pro-life experts Richard Doerflinger and Christopher Bell; geologist Anne Hofmeister; cybersecurity expert Michael Cloud; psychologist Darcia Narvaez; business professor-author Anjan Thakor; and soul and spiritual musician Micki Miller. Learn more about them in the show notes accompanying their TSSM episodes. Thanks also to our friend, composer and performer Vin Marquardt, for writing our podcast's closing theme for a long time, “Igneous Grok.”

Synopsis On today's date in 1971, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., was inaugurated with a gala performance of a new work by Leonard Bernstein. Entitled “Mass,” this was a musical and visual extravaganza which reinterpreted the text of the Latin liturgy and involved more than 200 singers, dancers, and instrumentalists. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis had asked Bernstein to write a piece to open the new Center but was conspicuous by her absence. President Richard Nixon also chose to stay away, rightly fearing that Bernstein's “Mass” would be interpreted as an embarrassing protest against the war in Vietnam. The Washington Post's front-page review, titled “A Reaffirmation of Faith,” was glowing in its praise, but Time magazine's assessment was condescending, quoting some New York wits who dubbed it the “Mitzvah Solemnis.” The New York Times review was brutal, calling Bernstein's Mass “a combination of superficiality and pretentiousness . . . [and] the greatest mélange of styles since the ladies' magazine recipe for steak fried in peanut butter and marshmallow sauce.” But Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, when she finally did hear Bernstein's work, sent the composer an inscribed photograph which read: “Lenny – I loved it, yes, I did, and I love you, too. Thank you for making ‘Mass' so beautiful.” Music Played in Today's Program Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) –Sanctus, from Mass (Empire Brass) Telarc 80159 Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) –Simple Song, from Mass (Boston Pops; John Williams, cond.) The best movie I have seen in years is called Everything, Everywhere All At Once and it was written and directed by Daniels. Daniels? Yes, Daniels. Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, to be specific. Two brilliant artists who met in college and began stitching together short films before working on music videos like Turn Down For What by DJ Snake and Lil John (over a billion views), Simple Song by The Shins, and Tongues by Joywave. Watch those to see their energy and magic.   Daniels made their feature-length debut at Sundance in 2016 with Swiss Army Man also known as the “Daniel Radcliffe farting corpse movie” and then followed it up with this twisting multiverse action flick Everything Everywhere All At Once starring Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu, and Jamie Lee Curtis.   And how's this arthouse flick (with a paltry $25 million dollar budget!) doing? Well, it is the highest rated film of the decade on Rotten Tomatoes. It's being credited with bringing back multiplex crowds post-pandemic. And the people who see it and love it (like I did) end up going back to see it again and again. (You'll pick up so much more on the second time through and now I'm just itching for a third!)   Daniels create art for art's sake — that David Foster Wallace Nature of the Fun ethos we've talked about before — and the result is this incredibly provocative and non-conformist stuff that just squeezes your mind until the smiles and tears start rushing out.   Let's flip the page into Chapter 101 now…   What You'll Learn: What is the greatest compliment for a film-maker? Why should you journal about a project before sharing it with an audience? What is the alpha-verse? Why is kindness a power? How can we evaluate our own projects? What is the tension between listening and hubris? How do the greats deal with imposter syndrome? What is it like to grow up with ADHD? How do people diagnosed with ADHD view the world? How can we learn to appreciate discomfort in art? How do we create visceral emotion in others? How do we supercharge our creativity and access ideas? What are schools doing wrong? What should school curriculums emphasize? How can we cultivate creativity in our kids? Why should we talk more openly about sex? Why should we question what we've been taught about relationships and sex? How can cartoon strips help us answer big questions? Are we living in a post physical world? How does what we consume shape us?   You can find show notes and more information by clicking here: https://www.3books.co/chapters/101     Leave us a voicemail.
