We take a look at the results and the races too close to call in this year's municipal election. Charlotte FC fires yet another coach. North Carolina State Auditor Beth Wood indicted, and the Panthers play in primetime. Those stories and more.
State Auditor Beth Wood was indicted this week, accused of using publicly owned vehicles for personal errands — a charge that grew out of the scrutiny she received after wrecking a state-owned car after a December holiday party. After Tuesday’s indictment, Wood, who at one point this year said she planned to run for reelection, announced that she'll resign instead, effective Dec. 15. Also: Democrats rolled in local elections, and new candidates have announced statewide runs ahead of next month's filing deadline. WRAL NCCapitol Bureau Chief Laura Leslie and State Government Reporter Travis Fain get you all caught up on The Wrap.

Before last week, State Auditor Beth Wood wasn't often in the headlines. But then news of a hit-and-run charge against her came to light. Lots of questions remain about the crash. For people who don't follow North Carolina government closely, the biggest one was: “Who is Beth Wood?” WRAL State Government Reporter Paul Specht, who profiled Wood at WRAL.com, explains.
A jury ruled last Friday that Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools did not violate the Title IX civil rights of a former Myers Park High student who sued and said the school system didn't protect her after a 2015 sexual assault. Details emerge in a hit-and-run last month involving state auditor Beth Wood. The trial is underway in the case of a prominent South Carolina attorney accused of murdering his wife and son and defrauding his clients. And Mecklenburg County Commissioners discuss priorities during this week's budget retreat. Mike Collins and a panel of reporters discuss these stories.
North Carolina State Auditor Beth Wood hit another car after a holiday party last month, then left the scene with the car running. She's been charged with hit and run, and has a court date Thursday, but has refused to answer questions about that night, including whether she was drinking.

State Auditor Beth Wood's job is to make sure the state spends billions and billions of dollars properly. She came in skeptical and after 13 years, she says she still feels that way every single day. The little girl who worked on her family's tobacco farm grew up to be an accountant and is known for her no-nonsense style when it comes to keeping tabs on state spending. We also talk to her about well-known fashion and why she was recently inducted into a hall of fame.
Auditor Beth Wood is unlike any modern day politician in North Carolina. She's soft-spoken yet very direct, a CPA with vast knowledge of arcane accounting regulations but just as comfortable talking about priming tobacco, and a proud Democrat who will take on anyone at any level of government, including members of her own party. The Craven County native chats with Brian and Skye about her humble childhood working and living on a farm, her early career as a dental hygienist, and the decision she made at age 29 to go to college to be a CPA. The 4-term State Auditor also talks about a troubling audit in Rocky Mount, her advocacy for legislation to prevent future improprieties by municipal leaders, and a recent confrontation in a House committee with a Democratic legislator. Plus, the start-stop-start-stop of campaign filing this week that eventually delayed the March primaries to May, more retirement announcements, and Brian and Skye get stranded in Akron, Ohio on Wednesday. The Do Politics Better podcast is sponsored by New Frame, the NC Travel Industry Association, and the NC Beer & Wine Wholesalers Association.

As a songwriter, Fortier has shared the stage with the likes of Frazey Ford, The Deep Dark Woods, David Dondero, Matt Pond PA, and more, and has contributed to the catalogs of Warner/Chappell, BMG, and Marmoset. Ceramic artist Damien Wolf recommended the vivid plein air paintings of Colleen Cosgrove of St. Paul. Painting outdoors, Cosgrove takes on subjects both large and small, from tomatoes newly plucked from her garden to landscapes, using bold strokes and bright colors. “I like her work because it makes me look at the world around me differently,” Wolf said. He recalls seeing Cosgrove paint during the Art Shanty project on Lake Harriet in Minneapolis: “She [was] standing outside in the freezing cold painting all the other exhibits in the Art Shanty, and her color choices actually brought warmth to the scene around her.” Cosgrove’s work is on display at the Frameworks Gallery in St. Paul through October. It will be at the “Extremely Minnesota” exhibit at the Robbin Gallery in Robbinsdale Nov. 5 through Dec. 5. Courtesy of Nicholas Pumper "St Monica, Full of Hope" by Nicholas Pumper. Ella Moróne followed the work of Minneapolis artist Nicholas Pumper throughout college. Both graduated from the University of St. Thomas this year. Pumper’s acrylic paintings are inspired by his love of nature and his Catholic faith. He posts his work and his process regularly on Instagram, and Moróne appreciates his meditations about why seeking beauty and creating art matter. Music educator Scott Kummrow of Fergus Falls enjoys the work of singer-songwriter David Stoddard, who has produced seven albums and has performed across the U.S. and Canada. Kummrow said he got to know Stoddard’s music when he performed on the open mic scene in western Minnesota, albeit “at a different level than everybody else.” Stoddard sings and plays piano, guitar, and accordion; his songs range from introspective folk songs to humor. “He’s good at being funny and also creating good music at the same time,” says Kummrow, who recommends seeing Stoddard perform live. Next chance: a livestream concert on Nov. 2 with singer-songwriter Beth Wood. Can't see the video? Click here.

No big deal since she loves music that much there's nothing that's going to keep her from doing it. Surrounded by top musicians she's a coveted band member. Being and excellent rhythm guitarist and powerful vocalist she can work with the best. Raising a family and committing to lifelong relationships just makes her music all the more powerful. You can hear the intensity of her love for a life in music in this conversation. Hearing her talk there's no doubt about it. We can all take a page from her example of healthily living within the professional music industry perhaps outside of societies norms.

In this episode, you will find tips and tricks to on how to stay healthy and happy during times like these........... Kati Falzone (instagram: @runsonoil/facebook: Runs on Oil): Structure! Have a plan for your day. It allows you to focus on something positive that you can control. Of course, everything won’t go as planned but it’s nice to have some sort of structure for your day. Habits! It’s easier to form better habits when your schedule or routine is off or different than the norm. You will build in a space in your new routine for what you are wanting to add. Eliza Bacot: Play background music. It will help keep the volume level/tone in your home. Take frequent walks outside. It’s proven that being outside can increase your mood. Essential oil timeout. It will be a distance from a situation/person that may be frustrating you and will involve a scent. Put a little oil in your hands and escape. Christa Knowles: Take one day at a time. Take deep breaths, get out in nature, use your oils. Make the most out of this time. Use the time to catch up on laundry or projects/cleaning that you may not typically have time to do. Use the internet for new resources. Online workouts (yogi approved is my fave, bender fitness is another fave), virtual field trips for kids, etc. Beth Wood (instagram: @essentially_obsessed_life/fb: essentially obsessed life Beth Wood): Aromatherapy playdough-2 cups flour, 2 cups colored water, 1 cup salt, 1 tbs olive oil, 1 tsp cream of tartar, and 5 drops essential oil of your choice. Combine all ingredients (except oil) in a large saucepan and stir until combined. Leave over medium heat until it forms into a ball. Remove from heat and cool on parchment paper. Once cooled add oils until combined. Katie Rozier: Have a morning checklist for your kids. Getting dressed, brushing teeth, making bed, oils, etc. Get a workout in while your kids are doing their morning chores. Stay on top of oil application. Calming oils, focus oils, immunity oils…..all of those are very important right now. Get outside. Regardless of the weather, make it a point to get outside everyday. Julie Davey(fb: Julie Davey, NP/instagram: @juliedaveyn/www.juliedavey.com): Best fruits/veggies to stock up on during quarantine time. Apples-will last for months in the refrigerator. Bananas-buy them as green as possible. Once they start to ripen, add them to the refrigerator. When/if they start to go bad, peel them and put in the freezer for smoothies, breads, etc. Citrus fruits-can last months in the fridge. Lime is great in savory dishes. Oranges-great for a snack and great for immunity boosting due to the vitamin c! Berries-freeze berries if you see them going bad. You can use them in smoothies and baking. Avocados-really great for your healthy fat intake. Tip: buy them really green and really hard. You can leave them on the counter until they start to ripen, then add them to the fridge to lengthen their life. Potatoes(sweet, russet, yukon gold)-store them in a warm, dry place. Options are endless with potatoes! Great staple because they last a long time. Onions-last weeks to months. Store in your pantry. Winter Squash (butternut, acorn, spaghetti)-all great roasted in the oven. Cabbage/Brussel Sprout-will last 1-2 weeks in the refrigerator. Cauliflower-will last 1 to 2 weeks in the fridge. Broccoli-will last about a week in the fridge. Garlic-will last for months and will elevate the flavor of any savory dish. Carrots-will last weeks in the refrigerator. Frozen veggies/fruits are a great alternative to canned veggies. Jeanine Ewing: Doterra products we are using to stay healthy and happy: On guard everything-Hand soap, sanitizer spray, roller ball. We love PB assist for the kids and adults! We also take several other Doterra vitamins and supplements to maintain wellness. Diffusing adaptiv for a calm and restful atmosphere in our home. Beth Wood is the Founder of Essentially Obsessed Life and a Silver Leader with doTERRA Essential Oils. She’s been on this journey for three years, learning natural options that support the body for her and her family and also sharing with others. One of her passions has always been helping others and now she has the opportunity to do that by sharing God’s medicine with them. Beth began using essential oils seven years ago when searching for solutions to several medical conditions her (now adopted) son, Nate was experiencing. She believes that it is always best to identify the root cause rather than taking a ‘Band-Aid’ approach. Beth is highly motivated to help others learn that there are natural solutions to treat the underlying cause and provide relief! Beth makes a living touring the nation playing music and making folks feel good. Join us as she explains why she always plays barefoot and as I convince her that her music extends to international waters… Buddy Beth Wood is also the first non-Central Oregon resident guest on the show. However, she has become so integrated into some of Central Oregon’s premier events, playing the Sisters Folk Festival, hosting the Sunday Community Celebration and staffing the Americana Song Academy, that she is practically family and therefore kicks off our Friends of Central Oregon category. Beth has been blessed with the gift of song and story and shares with us her path, her struggles and her triumphs. She also shares how she “wrote her own story” as she broke the mold by also becoming an athlete. Check out her music at www.bethwoodmusic.com or come see her in September when she returns to the Sisters Folk Festival (www.sistersfolkfestival.org)

About Beth Fitchet Wood A folksinger from Phoenix with Long Island, New York roots, who cut her teeth on the Sons of the Pioneers and Rodgers and Hammerstein, with Harry Belafonte and Georgia Gibbs thrown in. Beth sang and played guitar in Honk, a rock 'n roll band that ranged from Mahalia Jackson to Cream to Freddy Hubbard, who landed several major record deals in the early 70's and toured with Chicago, Loggins and Messina and The Beach Boys. In the 80's she began writing, and all her influences melded with her own voice into an indescribable yet familiar expression. Her songs are very personal and intimate, and though the folk idiom is strong, her harmonic structures betray her jazz roots. She has made 5 CD's on her own, has appeared as band member on 5 others, and has sung on countless other projects of every description, in most languages. "Shared stages" with a phonebook of the most influential musicians from the '60's through the present.. She won first place songwriter at the Tucson Folk Music Festival in 2009, and in her home town, Laguna Beach, has hosted (for 7 years!) one of the best Songwriter's Showcases anywhere. It's gotten such a reputation throughout the United States that touring songwriters stop by from all over the country, providing a different musical adventure every single Tuesday. The atmosphere gives musicians a rare opportunity to stretch artistically to a very appreciative audience. She also played a main stage set at the Far West Folk Alliance conference in 2009. Played main stage sets at folk festivals and conferences throughout the west, and in 2011 was one of three nominees for Artist of the Year by the Laguna Beach Alliance of the Arts. "...pure, plain beautiful singing." - Mike Boehm, L.A. Times
