Interview by Kris PetersHe may have been taken from us far too soon, but the legacy and memory of guitar great Randy Rhoads will live forever. Rhoads' name is revered in the music world, where, for a period from the late 1970s through to the early 1980s, his playing and presence left a shadow of brilliance that is as strong today as it was back then. The virtuoso guitarist, who co-founded Quiet Riot and propelled Ozzy Osbourne's solo career with Blizzard of Ozz (1980) and Diary of a Madman (1981), remains one of heavy metal's most important figures. Before his untimely death in 1982 at just 25, Rhoads redefined guitar-driven rock, blending classical influences with blistering metal to pioneer the neoclassical metal subgenre. His iconic riffs, featured in timeless songs such as Crazy Train and Mr. Crowley, and innovative techniques, including two-handed tapping, vibrato bar dive bombs, and intricate scales, set a new standard for the 80s metal scene and inspired countless guitarists.Recognised with a 2021 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, Rhoads' legacy endures as a cornerstone of heavy metal evolution, with his signature Jackson Rhoads guitar symbolizing his revolutionary impact. To most of this current generation and beyond, the life and music of Randy Rhoads will always be that of past reflection, unable to bear witness to the great man on stage with precious little preserved on camera or film. But this December, thanks to XMusic, fans can get as close to the glory days of guitar as possible when A TRIBUTE TO RANDY RHOADS - The Stories and Music Behind the Legend - hits this country for a performance that includes live renditions of Rhoads' finest moments as well as an in-depth Q&A session. This is more than just a tribute performance, with Rhoads' long-time friend, confidant and co-founder of Quiet Riot, Kelly Garni, heading the evening alongside Rhoads' first-ever guitar teacher, Scott Shelley. It promises to be an unforgettable celebration of Randy Rhoads - a true guitar legend - whose influence still resonates in every power chord and soaring solo played today. HEAVY had the pleasure of speaking with Kelly Garni ahead of the tour, and among the topics of conversation was the sheer magnitude of putting together and the need for a performance of this scale."I don't pursue these things," he stressed. "People come to me, and they ask me to do them. There's a very, very large fan base for Randy Rhoads, and pretty much I'm the last man standing (laughs). Of course, I don't have Kevin (Dubrow, vocalist), who I sure do miss. Although if you read my book, you wouldn't believe that in a million years, but boy do I miss him. He was a great, great guide for me, and I learned a real lot from Kevin. But anyway, I've been approached several times, and I've been all around the country over the last few years here in America, and now Japan twice. People want anything left of Randy, and I guess I'm what you get. It's an honour to represent my best friend. Of course, anybody would do that for their best friend, if they're any kind of a friend. And so, since people are so excited to hear that music again, I happily oblige and go and do these shows."Garni had many tales to tell, among them how Alice Cooper shaped much of what was to eventually become the sound of Quiet Riot, albeit without having ever met the two impressionable youths."When we saw Cooper, we said we're gonna be rock stars, whether anybody likes it or not," he smiled. "And you know, in my mind, Randy did, but I never really did. And I never really wanted to. And that's okay because things had changed over the years to where I didn't want to be in the music business any more, but because of my association with Randy, I find myself very heavily involved (laughs). And I gotta say, to see and meet all the fans who come to these shows is really, really something that makes you feel good in your heart and your soul."In the full interview, Kelly addressed the excitement among fans and the importance of celebrating Rhoads' legacy, highlighting the involvement of key figures from Randy's early career to enhance the authenticity of the tribute. He spoke about the rest of the band, including musicians from Snake Bite Whiskey and the Van Halen tribute band Van Hager, along with a Q&A session featuring Scott Shelley, Randy's first guitar teacher. We spoke about the Q&A session and the personal nature of the questions and how emotional it could get.Reflecting on his and Randy's musical journeys, Kelly shared insights into their early influences and the challenges they faced, including Randy's struggles with confidence and vocal abilities. He recounted the band's evolution, including a misguided image overhaul that led them to adopt a look that felt disconnected from their original sound. We also spoke about important moments of Randy's life and the impression he left on others, including Kelly, the ever-lasting legacy left behind by his untimely death and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
This week, we start a new series all about appreciating the shredded, gravelly, gritty, raspy pipes and throats of rock n' roll. We are focusing on lead singers who crafted truly special tones with their sandpapered delivery. Join us in celebrating these unique sets of pipes that set them apart from all the others. Anyone can scream, but only a few deliver gravel, grit & glory! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Our appreciation, this week, of rough and textured singing extends to all of the genres that we love. Kevin never realized how much this style of vocalizing had an impact on him until putting this whole thing together. As always, we hope we turn you onto something new!Songs this week include:Metal Church – “Ton Of Bricks” from The Dark (1986)Hot Water Music – “Trademark” from Fuel For The Hate Game (1997)Love/Hate – “Blackout In The Red Room” from Blackout In The Red Room (1990)The Baboon Show – “Gold” from God Bless You All (2022)Grave Digger – “Hymn Of The Damned” from The Living Dead (2018)The Distillers – “Die On A Rope” from Coral Fang (2003)Asomvel – “Born To Rock ‘n' Roll” from Born To Rock ‘n' Roll(2024)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/inobscuria/og-shopCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Metal health will drive you mad!!! Or, it might cure your crazy... we're getting mixed messages this week from the humble, very shy frontman of Quiet Riot, Kevin DuBrow. It's an all out frontal assault of guitars, drums, bass, and Kevin DuBrow. But what will Kev think of a cover of a beloved Slade tune? Will Quiet Riot be able to withstand the loss of Randy Rhoads in Corey's eyes? And what nonsense will Kev have for us in this week's game? The only way to find out is to turn on, tune in, and band your head.Songs covered in this episode: "Metal Health", "Cum On Feel the Noize", "Don't Wanna Let You Go", "Slick Black Cadillac", "Love's a Bitch"Don't forget to follow us on social media and leave us a rating/review if you're enjoying the show!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/UltimateCatalogueClashBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/ucatalogueclash.bsky.socialDiscord: https://discord.gg/76F8G8FEX8Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/ultimatecatalogueclash Hosted on Acast. Rudy Sarzo of Quiet Riot Live on Game Changers with Vicki Abelson I got to sit down again with bassist extraordinaire, Rudy Sarzo... Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne, Whitesnake, The Guess Who, Blue Oyster Cult - who's also a modern-day humanist, animal rights activist, author, mentor, CG artist, and an evolved, spiritual, gentle soul. And what a time it was! Originally from Cuba, we talked Rudy's early days, his family's struggle to get here, and the struggles they continued to face when they arrived. Barely speaking the language, work shortages, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Kennedy Assassination, to the shining light of the Beatles, which shifted almost everything. Rudy's foray into music... Kevin Dubrow, the original Quiet Riot, a partial cover band at the time doing some originals, Ozzy Osbourne, the fame, booze, and the crazy, Randy Rhoads, who opened the doors, filled the world with magic and then took the joy when he left way too soon, Frankie Banali, more Quiet Riot, Metal Health, Whitesnake, the girls, more fame, Blue Oyster Cult, The Guess Who, now joyfully back with Quiet Riot with bandmates handpicked by the originals. We talked Rudy's marriage, it'll be 40 years this June, a herculean accomplishment for anyone, for a rocker on the road, stunningly amazing! This is a man who honors his commitments. All of them. Sober 26 years, he found program and solutions during the pandemic and finds himself a changed man in so many ways. And this, a changed world. Rudy is deep and we went deep about music, healing, the communal experience... I feel richer, calmer, saner, and more centered having spent time in his grounded and assured presence. He's not only a monster bass player of the highest caliber, he's also a highly evolved human of a most admirable order. I feel like I just spent an hour plus with a Zen master and I'm somehow better for it. What a gift he is. On our show, we often examine bands who make it big on one side of the pond, but for some reason don't hit it big on the other. This week we examine a band that was huge in the US thanks to a hit by a band that was huge in the UK. in 1983, Quiet Riot released Metal Health and, thanks to success of the Slade cover Cum On Feel The Noize, became the first heavy metal album to hit #1 on the Billboard charts. The song hadn't been a hit for Slade in the US but was huge in the UK and Europe. Quiet Riot may have risen to great heights in the US but didn't make much of a dent in the UK. Beyond the big hit, there are some driving beats and killer riffs provided by Frankie Banali (drums), Rudy Sarzo (bass) and Carlos Cavazo (guitar) on songs like Metal Health and Slick Black Cadillac. But it was the posturing and sleazy lyrics of lead singer Kevin Dubrow that really grabbed people's attention and got the band into some hot water. How has this one stood the test of time after 40 years? We go track by track, have a listen! We've had the chance to talk to a whole lot of rock stars over the years...and there are few that can truly be considered rock royalty like legendary bassist Rudy Sarzo. A Cuban immigrant, he chased his dream of playing music to spend time in some of the most iconic and influential acts in heavy metal. Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne, Whitesnake, Dio...and that's just scratching the surface. He rejoined Quiet Riot in 2021, at the behest of late drummer Frankie Banali, to carry on the band's legacy....and now they've unearthed an unreleased recording. "I Can't Hold On", featuring both Frankie and late frontman Kevin DuBrow....and we talked to him all about it this morning!

This week is a pretty unique pairing of classic rockers. First up we hear from Slade drummer Don Powell! Don discusses those glory days of Slade, why they never fully caught on in the States despite being one of the biggest UK bands of the 70s, how Quiet Riot's cover of "Cum on Feel the Noize" finally brought them some attention, the personal and business obstacles the band had to overcome and his recent solo album with the Occasional Flames, Just My Cup of Tea. He's about as nice as they come! Then we hear the Quiet Riot side of the story with bassist Chuck Wright! Chuck talks about how they came to record those Slade covers, working with Rudy Sarzo and the late Kevin Dubrow and Frankie Banali. Chuck also has his first solo album out now called The Sheltering Sky which is an epic piece of work. Enjoy! www.donpowellofficial.com www.facebook.com/chuck.wright1

In 1977, Dale George Lytle and Dave Raudman united the musicians that would form ANGELES in Tujunga, Ca. Their first Hollywood gig was at the Troubadour where they sold out playing the midnight slot on a Sunday night. That paved the way to becoming one of LA's Largest Indie bands of the 80's. In 1980, Angeles headlined the Fall Rock Festival at Devonshire Downs, during the show Ron Bushy (original drummer of Iron Butterfly). In 1981, they co-headlined two concerts with Mötley Crüe at the Troubadour. In 1984, ANGELES signed to Mystic Records who released their debut album “We're No Angels” and the title of that album was decided by Kevin DuBrow, then vocalist of Quiet Riot. That year, they also opened up for Bon Jovi at the Reseda Country Club.Angeles has shared the stage with rock legends such as Mötley Crüe, Quiet Riot, Ratt, Ronnie James Dio, Bon Jovi, Michael Schenker, Dokken, Foghat, LA Guns, Jack Russell's Great White, Angel, and Jefferson Starship at world-renowned venues such as the Whisky a Go Go in Hollywood, Canyon Club in Agoura Hills, Devonshire Downs in Northridge, Reseda Country Club, The Roxy, and many more.In 2014, Angeles received their first platinum record with 1 million copies of “We're No Angels” sold worldwide. As of 2018, Angeles have released eleven albums. In 2019 Angeles signed with Dark Star Records / SONY / Universal Music. In 2021, Angeles hit the Top 200 on the Billboard Radio Charts with their song “Heal The Wounds” reaching #22 for three weeks on the Rock Chart Indicator. The band recently relocated from their home base of LA to Missouri.
EPISODE 18 - EXTERNAL Version for Non-Spotify Listeners! The band began in 1983 originally as a solo project for singer-songwriter/guitarist Steve Plunkett (also known as "Plunk"), who had recently left the band Silver Condor, due to his frustration with their lack of interest in recording his songs. Plunkett then began playing and recording his own material with a group of his musician friends, most of whom had previously played with him in other bands. On lead guitar was Steve Lynch, who had played with Plunkett in the band Looker, and who has a distinctive two-handed, fretboard-tapping technique, which eventually won him the "Guitar Solo of the Year" award from Guitar Player magazine for his work on Autograph's signature song, "Turn Up The Radio." Bassist Randy Rand knew Plunkett from their days together in Wolfgang, a club band in Los Angeles, which has been described as a local legend and of which Kevin Dubrow (lead singer of Quiet Riot) said, "They smoked us all....They got better response than us and Van Halen." Steve Isham, keyboard player and longtime friend of Plunkett's, had earlier played with Holly Penfield, and on drums, Plunkett called on Keni Richards, his bandmate from John Doe, and whose friendship with Van Halen lead singer David Lee Roth led to Autograph's big break. Over time, this group of musicians recording together took the form of an actual band. Plunkett chose the name "Autograph" for the band, having been inspired by hearing Def Leppard's similarly-titled song "Photograph" on the radio. They recorded their first demos in late 1983, but gave copies of the demo to a few friends only. One of these friends, Andy Johns, a record producer, played their demo for David Lee Roth of Van Halen, who subsequently invited the band to open for them in their 1984 tour. The band rose to prominence as an opening act for Van Halen on their 1984 tour, an act of distinction for an unsigned band. Autograph signed a contract with RCA Records following a performance at Madison Square Garden in New York City in 1984. The band's debut album, Sign In Please, was completed and released in October of that year, but did not make an appearance on any record charts until January, 1985. Sign In Please contains the band's only major hit and signature song, "Turn Up the Radio." Interestingly, according to Autograph's Turn Up the Web website, the tune was the last song recorded for the album, and the band members were initially very lukewarm toward it. The song became a top-30 hit, pushing album sales past the gold mark (500,000 copies sold). The album later went platinum. "Turn Up The Radio" was featured on an episode of Miami Vice entitled "Little Prince." The band also recorded a song titled "You Can't Hide From the Beast Inside" for the film Fright Night.
When you think guitar gods, names like Hendrix, Frehley, Van Halen, Clapton, Iommi all come to mind, but one name in a very limited window of time will always stick out and that man was named, Randy Rhoads. In just a 5 year window, Randy Rhoads began his journey to guitar god with Quiet Riot, leading him to join Ozzy Osbourne on his first solo venture with Blizzard of Ozz. Sadly, at 25 years old, Rhoads lost his life in a tragic plane crash that left the entire music industry numb. Now, 40 years since his passing, director Andre Relis and rock legend, Tracii Guns (who narrates the documentary) revisit the life and times of Randy Rhoads, a musical prodigy from Southern California that within a few months was better than his own music teacher. In less than 90 minutes, Relis humanizes Rhoads who has been deified in the metal community and continues to live on in our hearts, minds and souls. If you can get your hands on an early release of Blizzard of Ozz or the first two Quiet Riot albums, you can hear the intricacies of Rhoads' musicality within each song. During our interview, I told Guns that I was terrified when initially finding out that he was the narrator, because although he is an incredible musician and vocalist, that does not always translate to voice over, but to my delight and everyone else's Tracii Guns knocked it out of the park and just like any L.A. Guns show, will leave the audience wanting to hear more! 'Randy Rhoads: Reflections of a Guitar Icon' Releasing on VOD, Friday, May 6, 2022. Official Synopsis: Randy Rhoads, the legendary guitarist known for his unmatchable guitar riffs, re-shaped rock'n'roll as the lead guitarist for Quiet Riot and Ozzy Osbourne. After forming Quiet Riot with bandmates Kelly Garni, Drew Forsyth, and Kevin DuBrow in the 70s, the band quickly became one of the most popular acts in the Los Angeles club circuit. However, their music failed to land them a legitimate record deal. After playing with Quiet Riot for over 10 years, Randy received an opportunity to be the lead guitarist for former Black Sabbath singer Ozzy Osbourne. Randy played with Ozzy for a few short years, recording legendary songs such as Crazy Train, which includes Randy's groundbreaking guitar solo. After touring with Ozzy in the early 80s, Randy was tragically killed in a plane crash on March 19, 1982 at the young age of 25. His body died that day, but his soul and music live on forever. 'Randy Rhoads: Reflections of a Guitar Icon' is directed by Andre Relis. Narrated by Tracii Guns. Written and edited by Michael Bruining. Produced by Relis and Jessica Bennett. Executive Produced by Relis and JD Beaufils. Cinematography by Rich Buhrman. Music by Sean Kelly. A VMI Worldwide production. Tony Palmucci se unió a Baton Rouge en 1991 y lanzó el álbum Lights Out on The Playground.

Phil, Jake and Jason are joined by new guest Christina to gussy-up the List of Every Damn Thing by ranking the fictional princess Cinderella, the 80s glam-metal band Cinderella, and the hip-hop trailblazer Spinderella. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter and Instagram). You can view the full list at everydamnthing.netSHOW NOTES: RIP to Shock G. of Digital Underground, who died not long before we recorded this episode. Jessica Rabbit is considered to be a Disney Princess by us. The character of Cinderella is so unremarkable in the 1950 Disney movie that they don’t even include her as an ingredient in this official trailer. Charles Perrault, who wrote the Cinderella story best-known in contemporary culture, is pretty much the father of the “fairy tale” genre. His works-- derived from folk stories-- also include Little Red Riding Hood, Puss In Boots and Sleeping Beauty. As we discuss in this episode, Brandy played Cinderella in the 1997 Rogers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella TV movie. Phil didn't mention it but when his wife listens to "The Boy Is Mine" she agrees that the boy is Brandy's. Jake, however, knows the boy is Monica’s. Jason didn’t mention that Drew Barrymore’s air fryer is part of a Wal-Mart Collection. We mention Princess Diana. You can get the Di-themed Beanie Baby for just $50k on eBay. I Was A Rat by Phillip Pullman is just fantastic. Phil recommends it. Songs (and music videos) of Cinderella’s that we discuss include “Don’t Know What You Got Till It’s Gone” (partly shot in Bodie State Historic Park), “Nobody’s Fool”, “Somebody Save Me”, “Shake Me” and “Gypsy Road”. We also discuss their unremarkable deep-cut “Winds of Change” (not to be confused with “Wind of Change” by Scorpions). We engage in a bit of a hot-or-not session with metal guys, including Tom Keifer, Dee Snider, Stephen Pearcy (aka the guy from Ratt),Kevin DuBrow (aka the guy from Quiet Riot), Vince Neil, Brett Micheals, Slash and Jon Bon Jovi. Here's Michael Bivins (of Bell Biv DeVoe) in the video for “Motown Philly” by Boys II Men. Here’s a clip featuring the real voice of Gilbert Gottfried. The video for “Fresh” by Kool & The Gang is maybe the best interpretation of the Cinderella story and features the best K & the G song too. That's not our opinion, that's a fact. This trailer for the 1977 Cinderella erotic fairy tale movie that Phil saw as a kid acknowledges the foot fetish aspect of the story. The poster art for the movie is pretty great. Jake mentions that Salt-N-Pepa make an appearance in Coming 2 America. Spinderella does not. It looks like Hurby “Luv Bug” Azor was, in fact, in a relationship with Salt for a while in the 80’s. Jake should really know who Wendy Williams is. Jack Kirby continues to be Phil's example of someone who did work-for-hire in a creative field and didn't get paid. Jake was wrong: Spinderella is credited as a one of the producers on some of Salt-N-Pepa’s albums. But he was right when he guessed that she’s not even a performer on the album that features “Push It”. Here’s a clip from the Salt-N-Pepa Lifetime movie. We talk about the NWA song “I Ain’t Tha 1” (written and performed by Ice Cube). The lyrics are troublesome, but tame in comparison to some of his later more misogynistic songs. Ideal Para Llevarte O Regalar Productos Del Podcats De Ivoox. Frustrado, DuBrow empieza a mandar cartas a bandas metaleras nuevas en Los Ángeles sabiendo que su éxito era en parte debido a su éxito "ennow that their success was in part owed to the past successes of Quiet Riot". La banda lanzó Down to the Bone ese mismo año. Guns / Brides of Destruction.
