Emotional eating is a lot more complex than just, "I'm sad so I want a treat." We also eat when to celebrate, to fit in, and so many other reasons. Understanding the biological, social, and emotional components of how and why we eat is really important if you want to hone the skill of mindful eating where you nourish your body, indulge intentionally, and food thoughts don't dominate every waking moment. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: ● [5:22] How did Kate get into fitness and Pilates? ● [7:16] What is Pilates?● [9:33] What is true Pilates vs. what you might experience at a gym or hotel class?● [13:01] How can someone know that Pilates is the right fit for them?● [15:42] What information can people look for to know what to expect from a Pilates experience? ● [21:04] What does it mean to connect the breath to the movement and your core and pelvic floor?● [23:34] Where does the science come in and where does the methodology stem from for Pilates?● [25:26] Kate walks us through a way to connect to your core and pelvic floor. ● [28:45] How does Pilates help you in everyday life? ● [32:03] Why do you need a lower amount of reps during Pilates?● [35:16] Kate shares a story about how a client's Mind-Body Connection during Pilates spilled over into other areas of their life. KEY TAKEAWAYS: ● [22:38] The pelvic floor, the core, and the breath are all interconnected and essential for having everyday strength. ● [24:22] Pilates is great for everyone! No matter your age, there are benefits that you can get from practicing pilates and it can be customized to what it is you are needing. The intensity can be increased or decreased based on where a person is with their strength and individual needs. ● [36:49] Pilates is like the glue for everything else. It's the glue for everyday life, for the activities you want to do just to have fun, a way to excel and stay fit in the sports you are playing, manage stress, and more. It helps people physically and mentally. QUOTES: [6:03] “I'd torn the meniscus in my knee, I had hamstring injuries, back pain, all the dancer stuff, and I started to heal my own body from doing Pilates, and then went oh my goodness, this system is amazing. If I can heal myself, I can help others.” - Kate Boyle[14:00] “I'll get athletes that are wanting to cross train and really expand in their sport. Golf is a great example, it's all one sided, rotational to one side. So when we build up the strength and stabilization to the other side, they get more power, a better swing, and really excel in their game.” - Kate Boyle[14:53] “Even people where their mobility isn't as great anymore, and it might be as simple as trying to reach up to that top cupboard is getting really hard because they're getting really stiff through their shoulder, we can really work on that shoulder range and strength, so just everyday movements become easier.” - Kate Boyle[30:50] “You are learning how to move while being present with your body. So many other exercises we do, we'll jump up a treadmill, stick the headphones on or turn the TV on and start walking and running away and we're thinking about the shopping we've got to do and the kids we've got to pick up. In Pilates you can't do that because then you'll lose your breath or what your movement's doing, how many reps you've done, so it means for your workout, you actually have to be present in your body.” - Kate Boyle[32:25] “I think that's a different sort of mindset as well, so many other modalities were like no, no, no, you've got to do your 10 or your 20 and you've got to push through. Whereas Pilates is very much no, no, no, your body is telling you this is just too hard. Right now, we're going to start gripping the opposite muscles that shouldn't be activating, so we're going to hold our breath to get through, we're going to brace those abs. So rather than doing that, where we're not getting any benefits, take a short five second rest and then continue if you can.” - Kate Boyle "You can strengthen your body in a way that's both supportive and restorative." - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramGUEST RESOURCESMind Movement Health WebsiteMind Movement Health FacebookMind Movement Health InstagramMind Movement Health LinkedInMind Movement Health YouTubeMind Movement Health Podcast GUEST BIO:Passionate about holistic health and great movement, Kate runs her online movement and health platform, Mind Movement Health. 38 min. Interview: Jen Bleier, Somatic Educator Maureen and Pierre interview Jen Bleier, friend and somatic educator. Trained in Gyrotonic, Gyrokinesis, Pilates, Somatic Experience practitioner, and small "d" dancer. Jen's work spans different modalities, hence her self-description as a somatic educator. Jen said: “when you work with bodies, you can't not work with emotions.” Maureen and Jen are on the same team - working to heal, working to educate, integrating Mind Body Spirit health. So what is Gyrotonic? Officially: the Gyrotonic Expansion System. Gyro - meaning rotating movement that heals - hence tonic. Those who do yoga and work with bodies, those who suffer with lower back issues, sciatica, know the pain that comes from our skeletal system impinging nerves. Better support, better flexibility and expansion of the skeletal system can relieve that pain. Increased space in the skeletal system promotes synovial fluid, whose principal role is to reduce friction between cartilege and bones in joints. Improved flexibility in the body, for instance through an expanded skeletal system that is being compressed everyday by gravity, walking, standing and sitting, can produce improve health. . Gyrotonic started out as "Yoga for Dancers." It was started Juliu Horvath. There are over 6,000 Gyrotonic trainers worldwide. Perhaps you didn't know that? We certainly didn't until Jen educated us. Check Jen out at: https://jenbleier.offeringtree.com Check out Gyrotonic: https://www.centergyrotonic.com/about/gyrotonic_expansion_system/ In a similar vein, Ido Portal: Movement Culture. https://www.idoportal.com Healing through movement. At the beginning of the podcast, Maureen says: "we're all waiting for the medical world to catch-up." Meaning, catch-up to practicality and success of somatic paths to improved health. And to some extent it is. Physical therapy after surgery - get up and move. Medical imaging's improved understanding of healing and body mechanics, brain function. And, yet to some extent it isn't because movement therapy is difficult to monetize. Nonetheless, through sharing and learning pathways, courtesy of podcasts, streaming videos, worldwide web interconnectivity, it's happening. We're delighted you are along for the ride in Learning Conversation. Enjoy!

I couldn't wait to get Dr. Justine Bernard-Edwards on the podcast! Not only does she have her PhD is physical therapy from Columbia University she is also a GYROTONIC® Master Trainer. Her depth of knowledge on movement and healing is profound. I know personally because I took her GYROTONIC® applications course for Osteoporosis! Highly recommend. :) She has successfully run and grown her practice in the Glover Park neighborhood of D.C. for 11 years now and just recently became the east coast certifying studio for the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®. All this success doesn't come without some ups and downs! Justine shares some very practical tips on hiring, firing, finding a studio location, and negotiating leases. SO MUCH good stuff! Justine has a true teachers heart and she shares so much here on the pod! InJoy! Meet Billy! When I first reached out to Billy to see if he would be on the podcast he said, "SURE!" and then, "What's a podcast?" :p Billy is a GYROTONIC® Master Trainer and a studio owner in NYC for 20 years. I think it goes without saying that to make it in a city like NYC for that long is quite an accomplishment! I think the biggest takeaway from Billy's interview today is that the main ingredient you need to make it in this business is PASSION. Period. Billy's passion for the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® is tangible and it's what has pulled him and his business through the tough times. So I hope you enjoy this super fun interview between a southern girl and an Italian NYC boy! It was a joy creating it for you! Chronic pain in your body. Negative emotions and stress. Energy. Kandace Lopez shares exactly how interrelated these aspects of your health and well-being are—and how integral it is to understand the energetic interconnection in order to overcome chronic pain, illness, and just overall pave the way to better health and wellness. I met Kandace through my Pilates teacher training in Dallas and quickly discovered what a multi-modal, intuitive healer she is. Her current focus is on bodywork, more specifically, myofascial release. She is also a master trainer in classical Pilates, the Gyrotonic Expansion System, and reiki. She incorporates these tools in her practice, as well as microcurrent and Amino Neuro Frequency patches… and probably a whole lot more by now. Kandace is such a quick learner and always has her hands on some new learning experience, and this was my second ever interview !! which was recorded in March. I should also note that we recorded this interview right after she did bodywork on me and it is crazy how different my energy and my voice sounds. She is magic! IN THIS EPISODE WE TALK ABOUT: What got Kandace started on her healing journey How her education in each healing modality has shaped her life and her work as a healer How humans store their emotions in their bodies (and how our body is so much smarter than our mind—it never lies) Kandace’s experience in working with trauma and energy through bodywork How Kandace’s work with others has helped her further heal herself Why Kandace doesn’t believe that we ever take on other peoples’ energy Her Christian faith and how she perceives the link between spirituality and energy Plus much more… RESOURCES FROM THIS EPISODE Mentioned: Organifi Green Juice (Code: BRYANNA15) Anatomy Trains, by Thomas W. It’s all of those emotional things that create a visceral response in your body.” “People who have had chronic pain or have been injured, you will start to see that when they move through a certain range of motion there is a complete lock down of the whole entire body. They have been injured doing that at some point before so now every time their body goes back through that, it’s afraid it is going to happen again.” “So, even when doing Pilates you’re doing fascial work and you’re starting to help the body disassociate between movement and trauma.” “You're only as old as your spine.” “When you have been beat up over, and over, and over again, or you’re trying so hard to guard and protect yourself, you do it by creating a physical barrier. So I wasn’t just hard on the outside, my body was in pain too. Chronic pain always has an emotional component.” LET’S CONNECT Website: Bryannadee.com Instagram: @bryanna_dee Facebook: Facebook.com/bryannadee Pinterest: Pinterest.com/bryannadee/
