Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Saturday, Oct. 26, 2024. A WVU fashion program digs into garment origin by partnering with agriculture…discover Almost Heaven at Plum Orchard Lake in the fall…and former NFL star and acclaimed motivational speaker Rocky Bleier will be the keynote speaker at the Governor's Energy Summit next week…on today's daily304. #1 – From YNST – While most fashion programs focus on garment construction using mass-produced synthetic blends, WVU's fashion program has sown new seeds for the industry, including the newly-forged Farm to Fashion class. This years-in-the-making curriculum is revolutionizing the way student designers understand the industry by partnering with the university's agriculture program so they can learn about the origin of fiber and the laborious processes involved in creating textiles, Working in tandem with existing textiles and sustainability courses, students are leaving the program with a regenerative, ecosystemic lens adept for ‘slow fashion' — a distinctly different point of view than many of their peers across the globe. Recent graduate Chelsea LaReina Hidalgo is one such designer. Check out the interview in YNST Magazine where she talks about her senior collection and how she made her three looks using fully biodegradable textiles, natural dyes and recycled wool. Read more: https://ynstmagazine.com/look/sustainable-roots-how-wvus-fashion-program-is-sowing-couture-from-farm-to-fashion/ #2 – From MSN – Tucked into the hills of Fayette County, Plum Orchard Lake is the definition of Almost Heaven. In the fall, the oak-hickory forest that surrounds the lake makes for a beautiful blend of autumnal color. If you've got your own kayak or a canoe, bring it so you can marvel at the incredible forest display from the water. There are also some docks around the lake where you can immerse yourself in the fall foliage show. Its clear waters also are a well-known spot for summertime fishing for largemouth bass, channel catfish, bluegill, sunfish, and crappie. In 1968 Rocky Bleier was drafted in the 16th round of the NFL, the 417th player selected. In 1969 Rocky Bleier was drafted again. This time by the Army. Instead of training camp for the Steelers he was in basic training for the United States. A few months later he found himself halfway across the world, with a grenade launcher in his hand when he heard gunfire. He took cover but it was too late... a bullet had struck him in the leg. Despite being wounded, he located where the North Vietnamese soldier was firing from and sent a grenade in his direction. Unfortunately, a grenade was also heading towards him, hitting a soldier square in the back before falling to the ground right at Rocky's legs. An instant later it blew up, badly injuring Bleier. His time in Vietnam was over and many thought his time in the NFL was over as well. But not Bleier. Despite his doctor's telling him he'd live a "normal life" that didn't include football, Rocky had other plans. And a note from Steelers owner Art Rooney provided all the motivation he would need to get back on the field. It said simply, "Rock – the team's not doing well. We need you.“ In 1970, Rocky was one of the final cuts for the Steelers but once again the Steelers loyalty to Bleier provided him the strength and will to continue on. Dan Rooney, the Steelers GM decided the team wasn't cutting Bleier but instead was putting him on injured reserve. After another year of training and rehad, Bleier tried out for the Steelers again in 1971.... and made the team. And he made that same Pittsburgh team for 9 more seasons, winning four Super Bowl along the way before retiring after the 1980 season. It's a story of perseverance and dedication, of duty and honor, of loyalty and resilience. It's the story of Rocky Bleier... and he tells it in great detail this week on the Past Our Prime podcast. 38 min. Interview: Jen Bleier, Somatic Educator Maureen and Pierre interview Jen Bleier, friend and somatic educator. Trained in Gyrotonic, Gyrokinesis, Pilates, Somatic Experience practitioner, and small "d" dancer. Jen's work spans different modalities, hence her self-description as a somatic educator. Jen said: “when you work with bodies, you can't not work with emotions.” Maureen and Jen are on the same team - working to heal, working to educate, integrating Mind Body Spirit health. So what is Gyrotonic? Officially: the Gyrotonic Expansion System. Gyro - meaning rotating movement that heals - hence tonic. Those who do yoga and work with bodies, those who suffer with lower back issues, sciatica, know the pain that comes from our skeletal system impinging nerves. Better support, better flexibility and expansion of the skeletal system can relieve that pain. Increased space in the skeletal system promotes synovial fluid, whose principal role is to reduce friction between cartilege and bones in joints. Improved flexibility in the body, for instance through an expanded skeletal system that is being compressed everyday by gravity, walking, standing and sitting, can produce improve health. . Gyrotonic started out as "Yoga for Dancers." It was started Juliu Horvath. There are over 6,000 Gyrotonic trainers worldwide. Perhaps you didn't know that? We certainly didn't until Jen educated us. Check Jen out at: https://jenbleier.offeringtree.com Check out Gyrotonic: https://www.centergyrotonic.com/about/gyrotonic_expansion_system/ In a similar vein, Ido Portal: Movement Culture. https://www.idoportal.com Healing through movement. At the beginning of the podcast, Maureen says: "we're all waiting for the medical world to catch-up." Meaning, catch-up to practicality and success of somatic paths to improved health. And to some extent it is. Physical therapy after surgery - get up and move. Medical imaging's improved understanding of healing and body mechanics, brain function. And, yet to some extent it isn't because movement therapy is difficult to monetize. Nonetheless, through sharing and learning pathways, courtesy of podcasts, streaming videos, worldwide web interconnectivity, it's happening. We're delighted you are along for the ride in Learning Conversation. Enjoy!

Martin, E. Brickell) and between verses, told us how this saga began—exhausted from her work cleaning apartments, she crashed her car, thus robbing her of an Angeleno's most valuable possession. A singer, actress and self-confessed movie nerd, she ended up working as a reporter for Reel Hollywood, a small entertainment outlet. And yes, she literally rode the bus to her red carpet gigs. This change in fortune, however, inspired this delightful and often moving evening of songs and stories.
From 'The Bradfo Sho' (subscribe here): Richard Bleier has had his fair share of success in the major leagues. He's a former college teammate of Chris Sale and has played for five different MLB organizations. Bleier even holds a major league record for most balks in an inning. But for Red Sox fans, all that matters is that the 35-year-old is now a valued member of their bullpen, having been traded from the Marlins to Boston in exchange for Matt Barnes. Bradfo sits down with Bleier to talk about his journey, including the moment he got the call he was traded and why he has so much optimism heading into 2023.
Rocky Bleier, a four-time Super Bowl-winning Steeler halfback and Vietnam veteran, joined Kristian and Mike to share stories about his life. Bleier talked about his experience with ESPN and Tom Rinaldi and his interactions with former Steelers owner Art Rooney.
Kristian and Mike discussed the Saints' injury report. Mike expressed his concern over linebacker Pete Werner's injury. The guys also talked about Trevor Penning returning from injured reserve. Rocky Bleier, a four-time Super Bowl-winning Steeler halfback and Vietnam veteran, joined the show to share stories about his life. Bleier talked about his experience with ESPN and Tom Rinaldi and his interactions with former Steelers owner Art Rooney.
After a grenade injured both his legs and sent him home from Vietnam, Army Specialist Robert Patrick "Rocky" Bleier made a full recovery and went on to win four Super Bowls with the Pittsburgh steelers. In college, Bleier played for Notre Dame and was a part of the ‘66 National Championship team. He was the Pittsburgh Steelers' 16th round draft pick, but was drafted by the US Army after the 10th game of the season. Bleier was sent to Vietnam, where he patrolled the Hiep Duc Valley as a grenadier. During a firefight, he was shot, and then a grenade exploded right by his feet. Bleier had this to say about being evacuated by a sister platoon: “All of a sudden a fellow soldier reaches down and picks me up and throws me over his shoulder and starts carrying me to the helicopter. And the helicopter was still a far way away. And so he would put me down, my blood all over him and he'd catch his breath and pick me up again and continue on until he got me onto that chopper. And I never saw him again and didn't know who he was or where he came from, where he lived or anything. But the interesting thing was that he was a soldier of color. Now, it may not mean much now in that society, but at that time, back in the sixties. I mean, a lot of things were going on from a social basis. I mean, there was segregation still going on in colleges that would not let Black students be there or sign up. And so now all of a sudden, here it is, you have a Black soldier picking me up, not because he's Black and I'm white, but it was like brother to brother. And it was the immediacy of the time. And you don't think about race, you don't think about anything. And I think that's one of the great things about the military. It just levels the playing field for human beings to react with one another and as a fellow soldier. And so that was like we became brothers in that brotherhood of war.” SPC Bleier earned a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his service, and was sent home after his injury. Upon arrival in 1970, he returned to the Steelers, and began intense training in order to fully heal from his leg injuries. In 1974, he finally earned a spot in the starting backfield. Bleier would go on to win four Super Bowls with the Steelers, in 1975, 1976, 1979, and 1980. To learn more about Bleier and his incredible football career, check out his book, Fighting Back. You can follow him on Twitter at @RockyBleier. This Veterans Day, consider donating to help veterans in need. I'm wrapping up this week of football comeback stories with Rocky Bleier, who after his rookie year with the Pittsburgh Steelers was drafted into the Army and later shipped off to Viet Nam. Bleier was shot in battle and while lying on the ground had a grenade land near him and a comrade. While attempting to cover the grenade he suffered major injuries to his leg and foot from the blast. He tried returning to the NFL, but was in constant pain and was nearly 40 lbs under his playing weight. Finally, after four years and being released twice he made it into the Steelers starting lineup, rushing and blocking as the teams fullback and RB2. The next year in 1975, he and teammate Franco Harris both rushed for over 1000 yards. Bleier remained with the Steelers winning four Super Bowls and retired as their 4th all-time leading rusher. Sjalabais!

There's been a lot of chatter this week about what the Ravens did on the final play of the game against the Broncos. Rather than take a knee, Baltimore ran the football with the game in hand up 23-7 (and just three second left on the clock) to extend its 100-yard rushing streak to 43 consecutive games and tie an NFL record. In the latest edition of his podcast "Klis' Mike Drop," our 9NEWS Broncos insider Mike Klis talks with two Steelers legends who the current Ravens are now tied with for the mark. Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier joined Mike and were unaware they even held the previous record. “I wish I would have known that we held that record,'' former Steelers' running back Bleier said in a Zoom interview Wednesday with 9NEWS and his longtime friend and fellow Steelers' ball-carrier Harris. “The first time I heard about it was when I got this text message." Led by the fullback Harris and halfback Bleier, the Pittsburgh Steelers had run off 43 consecutive games of at least 100 yards starting from Game 13 of a 14-game schedule in 1974 until game 13 of the 1977 season. The Ravens matched that this past weekend in controversial fashion, so it was fun to hear from Harris and Bleier. Robert Patrick "Rocky" Bleier was a National Football League Halfback for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1968 and from 1970 to 1980.Born and raised in Appleton, Wisconsin. Bleier played college football at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend , Indiana, winning a National Championship his junior season. He then graduated in 1968 and was selected in the 16th round of the 1968 AFL/NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers, 417th overall. After his rookie season with the Steelers, Bleier was drafted into the U.S. Army on December 4, 1968, during the Vietnam War. Bleier was injured during his tour and lost part of his right foot. Sometime later he was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Weighing only 180 lbs and walking with pain, Bleier was never discouraged from making the Steeler roster upon his return. In addition to being a great lead blocker, Bleier was second only to Franco Harris as a ball carrier. In fact in1976, both Harris and Bleier rushed for over 1,000 yards, making this the second NFL team to accomplish this feat, after Mercury Morris and Larry Csonka of the 1972 Miami Dolphins. Bleier played his entire professional career with the Steelers being part of their four Super Bowl Championships in the 70's and retired in 1980. Upon retirement he wrote a book about his struggles following his war injury and making it in professional football and today does speaking engagements about retirement and financial ability which he discusses on his co-hosted talk show entitled The Rock on Retirement on Pittsburgh radio station 104.7 FM WPGB as well as he runs Bleier Zagula Financial with his business partner Matt Zagula. We will talk with Rocky about his journey through college and why he chose Notre Dame and winning a National Championship there. His choice to become active in the military and his lasting memories from action. We will discuss Rocky's lifelong professional career as a Pittsburgh Steelers and have him highlight for us some of the most glaring moments that he faced in his professional career. What it was like winning four SuperBowls and playing with a HOF group of teammates. We will also ask Rocky about his relationship with “The Chief” Art Rooney Sr and how he views today's NFL including his very own Pittsburgh Steelers. For generations, men and women from around the sports world have also served in our nation’s military. Among them, Rocky Bleier's story stands out. Bleier won a college football national championship with Notre Dame, then during his rookie season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. Three months into his deployment to Vietnam, Bleier was shot through the thigh and suffered a grenade blast to his foot. Doctors told him he’d never play football again. But Bleier would rejoin the Steelers and win four Super Bowls with the team in the 1970s. In 2018, Bleier and ESPN’s Tom Rinaldi traveled to Vietnam, to the Hiep Duc Valley, where Bleier served, and where many of his fellow soldiers were killed in an ambush. We re-air this story for Memorial Day.

Should we just “suck it up and deal with it” when life isn’t right or going our way in a job, a marriage, or a bad situation? What about school- is that for kids to just ‘deal with’ if it isn’t working? Mitchel BleierGreenfields Academy parent invites parents to listen to children who are sending out the warning signals about school being broken- they are yelling it loud and clear! In this Episode, we flip things around a bit from tradition when Rob & Mitchel have a discussion about the way school has always been defined as this place you go to, where you don’t seem to challenge, and even if it’s not working, the blame often is put on the child for not being able to manage it well. What if what was broken was the school, not the child? He shares his story about how coming to this school was more than just a decision of where to send his child for education - but rather, to teach his son about becoming all that he could be for the rest of his life. We are excited for you to dive-in, maybe even relate a little bit to this story of a family who has found themselves truly listening to the needs of their 10-year-old, and finding a thriving learning-for-life outcome because of it! The game will be televised by CBS. 4-time Super Bowl champion Rocky Bleier, who was injured as an Army Specialist in the Vietnam War, joined SportsJam host Doug Doyle to talk about "America's Game" that symbolizes service and sacrifice. Bleier, the captain of the University of Notre Dame football team in 1967 and a member of the Fighting Irish's National Championship team in 1966, played against both military academies during his college career. While Bleier will be cheering for an Army win, he has great respect for the rivalry. "Having played against both Army and Navy, is just o experience the pageantry and the atmosphere of having the Academies either come to your stadium and here now together is just remarkable. For generations, countless men and women from around the sports world have served in our nation’s military. But none have a story quite like Rocky Bleier. Bleier won a college football national championship with Notre Dame, but during his rookie season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. Three months into his deployment to Vietnam, Bleier was shot through the thigh and suffered a grenade blast to his foot. Doctors told him he’d never play football again. But Bleier would go on to rejoin the Steelers and win four Super Bowls with the team in the 1970s. In 2018, Bleier and ESPN’s Tom Rinaldi traveled to Vietnam, to the Hiep Duc Valley, where Bleier served, and where many of his fellow soldiers were killed in an ambush. We re-spin this show as the Steelers continue their undefeated 2020 season.

Following a promising college football career at Notre Dame, Rocky Bleier was on his way to starting a pro career in the NFL. It was 1968, and Bleier, who was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers, was nearing the end of his first NFL season when he received another draft notice. This time it was from the Army, and it was for a report date the morning after a Steelers game Bleier was suited up for. It was the height of the war in Vietnam, and Bleier's number was called, budding NFL career or not. Bleier accepted, and by May of 1969 was thrust into combat in Vietnam. He would go on to serve honorably, sustaining serious injuries and receiving the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals for actions in combat. Following his service in Vietnam, in spite of his injuries and being told he'd never play football again, Rocky Bleier worked his way back into the NFL, eventually starting at running back for the Steelers and winning four Super Bowls. There will be songs that we've never done before, and songs that we've done and love...sometimes a leap into the unknown, and sometimes a roar down memory lane! And, of course, there will be the odd story. After all, it, it's these random moments that create the arc of our lives. For tickets to Bits & Pieces visit: https://bit.ly/2ZqRUEO Like what you hear? ESPN's Tom Rinaldi, Jon Fish and former Steelers RB Rocky Bleier discuss "The Return," a documentary about the 50 year anniversary of Bleier being wounded in the Vietnam War.
Why Listen: Special thanks for ESPN for helping make this interview happen. A new film about Rocky, The Return, will air on August 20th, featuring Rocky’s story, and his return to Vietnam where he sustained his injuries 50 years ago. Rocky’s story - of going from the NFL to Vietnam, to being wounded in action, being told he will never again play football, and clawing his way back to the NFL to win 4 Super Bowls is absolutely inspiring. About Rocky: Not falling within the ideal of what a running back should look like, Bleier had to run harder and play smarter to be able to stand out. Despite his drive and ability to make the big play, the Pittsburgh Steelers only considered him a late round pick. But before the season ended that first year, he was drafted again…this time by the United States Army. At the height of the Vietnam War, Bleier was thrust into combat early and was seriously wounded when his platoon ran into an ambush. Receiving wounds from both rifle fire and grenade fragments in his legs, he was barely able to walk and his professional football career seemed to have ended before it began… For more than two years, he drove himself. Little by little he overcame obstacles and fought his way back. He not only made the Pittsburgh Steelers, but also eventually became a starting running back on a team that won four Super Bowls and became the greatest football team of the 20th century. The hard lessons Rocky Bleier learned early in his life that helped him overcome adversity and reach his goals, have paid off after football. These lessons are seen between the lines in the popular book on his life, "Fighting Back" and on stages of speaking appearances around the country.

Rocky Bleier graduated from University of Notre Dame in 1968 with a degree in business management, in addition to starring in football. After his rookie season, Bleier was drafted into the army, and fought in the Vietnam War. On August 20, 1969, Bleier's platoon was ambushed and Bleier was wounded in his left thigh. While he was down, a grenade sent many pieces of shrapnel into his right leg. Bleier's struggle to recover from his injuries was dramatized in the 1980 film Fighting Back starring Robert Urich as Bleier and Art Carney as Art Rooney. Bleier would play sparingly from 1971 to 1973 as upon his return he couldn't walk without being in pain, and he weighed only 180 pounds. Chuck Noll, the Pittsburgh Steelers coach, waived him on two occasions, but Bleier would always regain a spot on the roster. An offseason training regimen brought Bleier back to 212 pounds in the summer of 1974. From that point in time, he would be in the Steelers' starting lineup. In addition to being a great lead blocker, Bleier was the second of the Steelers' rushing weapons, (Franco Harris was the primary back,) but was effective nonetheless at both blocking and rushing. In 1976, both Harris and Bleier rushed for over 1,000 yards. Bleier played in all four Steeler Super Bowl victories, and caught the touchdown pass from Terry Bradshaw that gave Pittsburgh a lead it would never surrender in Super Bowl XIII.

Small mistake on the last podcast.....editing error and I guess we can call that a near-miss! It is has been corrected! Unfortunately the full BTK team was unable to make it down to LA this year for the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons meeting, but we were able to track down a few people to talk to who not only attended the conference, but also had a hand in planning! We are first joined by Drs. Kyle Cologne from USC and Anjali Kumar from Virginia Mason to discuss the social media presence at the conference, research awards, and finally some of the conference highlights. Then we are joined by own Dr. Scott Steele and Dr. Josh Bleier from UPenn to talk about the popular Rectal Ca panel! Just a reminder, the app for the ASCRS 2016 meeting can be found on iTunes, which includes the entire program and most of the slides from the talks. On the fascrs.org website, they will also have links to the narrated slide shows from the meeting. ASCRS also has an online education module called CREST (ColoRectal Education System Template) which is available to members. Check it out!!
