Understanding Your Sensory Profile, Nervous System and Processing Styles-Sarah Bergenfield

During this episode, Sarah Bergenfield shares a little about the path she and her daughter traveled to discover they are both autistic, and how as a therapist she is helping other neurodivergent individuals and neurodiverse couples as they move forward on their own unique journeys. Sarah is a Certified Level 3, Internal Family Systems (IFS) Practitioner. She provides information on the value of understanding the “parts” that may have been created as an undiagnosed autistic person. She also shares critically important information about Polyvagal Theory and why it's important to understand what happens when you are in a dysregulated or regulated state, as you are scanning for cues of "safety" or "danger". Sarah also talks about autism being a perceptual disorder and how this impacts the level of input coming in. Sarah also addresses the importance of understanding your "sensory profile" and how gathering that information can help partners understand which senses are "over" or "under" responsive and how to address each. Sarah also explains how autistic individuals process from the "bottom up' and others process from the "top down". Understanding the way in which you and your partner process the world, can help you both find the "hot spots" in your relationship and work on addressing them with compassion and grace. Lastly, Sarah talks about how important it is to shift the narratives we have around autism and neurodiversity. She shares a little bit about how she and her husband shifted their narrative around sex. After she began to understand her own sensory profile, then some of the challenges they had experienced began to make more sense. Since there are so many physical aspects of sex (ie: skin, touch, sound, smell, breath, etc.) it can be overwhelming, and when the autistic partner is not engaging in the way their partner may expect, it can feel like rejection to the non-autistic partner. Sarah also provides ideas about how each partner can discuss their sensory needs in a way that increases intimacy. Sarah ends the episode by discussing the way she has described being autistic... "it's like being a bird flying in a garden and then flying into a window"...more specifically she asks "how can you prepare for a hazard you don't even see?" Good Grief—Featuring Mike Christensen     Mikes' beloved friend, Kris Yip, word-ranked bicyclist who suddenly and tragically died. Mikes' beloved dog and best friend, Josie, who died the day before the podcast was recorded In today's podcast we feature one of our favorite people, Mike Christensen. Mike is a Certified Level 5 Master TEAM CBT Therapist and Trainer, and is the Director Feeling Good Institute, Canada. Mike is a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors and holds a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology degree. His diverse background in business, community organizations, and family support roles has provided Mike with a wide array of experience in leadership, administration, parenting training, and team building. He provides advanced level online training with the Feeling Good Institute for therapists around the world and is currently co-authoring a book with Maor Katz on Deliberate Practice of TEAM-CBT. Mike specializes in treating depression and anxiety, with experience and training in addictions, PTSD, and relationship challenges. Today, Mike comes to us today with a personal issue, grief and loss. The day before the recording Mike's beloved dog, Josie, died, and this came on the heels of the death of one his best friends, Kris Yip, a month earlier. Kris had died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 47. Kris was 7 or 8 years younger than Mike, and appeared to be the perfect example of health and fitness, so his loss was an unexpected and devastating punch in the gut. Mike explained that Kris was a celebrity in the bicycling community. He was the Canadian national champion and war ranked 59th in the world. However, he was humble and never promoted himself. Instead, he always focused on others, encouraging even those who were just beginners. Mike has also been a competitive bicyclist, and Kris had invited Mike to join an online racing team consisting of four friends who got together daily on stationary bikes linked by videos on the internet so they could talk while biking. In January of 2023, while riding, Kris's heart suddenly stopped. A friend of Kris called Mike to say, “Kris is gone!” This was devastating to Mike, who said: “He was the fittest of our group. The impact was profound.” He had trouble sleeping and was in disbelief. He said, “It felt surreal. It felt like something is wrong. He told himself, “I should be able to keep it together without falling apart.” Mike also told himself that Kris, was too young to go, and missed him tremendously. Mike thought of Kris's mom, and how much she was suffering, so he spent a week with Kris' family and friends in Prince George. Which was where Mike was born, and his brother and his other biking buddies live.  He said, “We cried together and were together.” He explained, “Whenever I got on my bike to ride, Kris was always there. He'd always say, ‘Let's ride.' I miss his voice.” He also said that during his rides, you could see Kris' face on the video feed, and he was always struggling, digging deep, suffering, but loving it! Mike said that all of his losses, including his sister, his son, and Kris,  were actually double losses, because “I lost not only what had been, but what was to come in the future, and didn't.” Mike said, “Kris was so humble, so I want to brag for him. He always cared and made all of us feel so encourage and inspired!” Mike mentioned some of the positives he saw in the pain of grief: It honors the depth of the love and the depth of our relationship with Kris. Our grief has motivated us to cherish our riding group and to cling together even more closely. Tears can be the purest form of love. Tears allow us to keep the other person alive in our hearts and minds. I mentioned how I talk to three people I've lost every day when I do my “slogging:” my beloved cat Obie, and two dear colleagues I've lost, Ann Hantz in Philadelphia and Marilyn Coffy from Oakland. Mike described how touched he was when visiting Kris' family, and how his mom had arranged all of Kris' bicycles in the garage, ready to be ridden, with all of his racing jerseys on display. Mike confessed that also felt angry and often thought: “You bugger. It  should have been someone else!” Mike has endured many tragic losses in his life, including the devastating death of his older sister when he was just 15, and the tragic loss of his son, Graeme Michael, who died shortly before birth. Mike reminded us about the various conceptualizations we use in TEAM-CBT, which can include individual mood problems (like depression or anxiety), personal relationship problems, habits and addictions, and “non-problems.” A non-problem refers to people who do not have distorted negative thoughts or problems that need to be solved—they just have strong and appropriate negative feelings, and the job of the therapist is simple: resist trying to “help,” and instead use the Five Secrets of Effective Communication to listen and give the grieving person the chance to vent and expression their feelings. With this in mind, Mike described the support he received from colleagues at the Feeling Good Institute, including one who told him to make sure he was feeling sad! He greatly appreciated this! In my clinical experience, “non-problems” were actually rare, but there were several patients who only needed to vent and receive support. one of my favorite chapters In my first book, Feeling Good, was Chapter 3. entitled Sadness is not Depression. I described my experience as a medical student with a terminally ill elderly man in the Stanford Hospital who reminded me of my grandfather. His extended family had gathered around the bedside as he was slipping into a coma from liver failure due to metastatic kidney cancer, and asked “Would it be okay for you to remove his catheter? It was a bit uncomfortable for him, and we're not sure if he still needs it.” I was very inexperienced and asked at the nursing station if it would be okay to remove it, and if so, how would I do it. They said he was, in fact, dying, and would not last much longer, and explained how to remove the catheter. I pulled the curtain around his bed, and did that and told the family, with tears in my eyes, “He can still hear you, but not for much longer, so it's time to tell him how much you love him and say goodbye.” Tears were flowing down my cheeks and they began to cry as well, and began saying good bye. I went to the room where the medical students and resident make their notes, and wept. The family later told the department chairman how much they appreciated what I did for them. I was a pretty terrible medical student, and for the most part had a bad attitude, but that was on moment I still feel very proud of. There are several differences between sadness and depression. First, the thoughts that trigger depression, like “I'm defective. There must be something wrong with me,” are distorted. Depression, as I've often said, is the world's oldest con. In contrast, Mike's thoughts, like the thoughts that trigger healthy grief, are not distorted, like “I miss Kris. I admired him and loved him, and he made a tremendous difference in my life, and the lives of all who knew him.” Second, depression can go on and on endlessly. I've had patients who told me that they'd never had even one happy moment in their entire lives. Healthy grief, in contrast, only needs to be accepted and expressed, and runs its course naturally, If grief is extended, or impairing the person's life, then it's a certainty that distorted thoughts are present and preventing the person from healthy grieving. In this case, treatment can be enormously helpful. Finally, depression robs us of joy, hope, and productivity. Life often seems meaningless and worthless. Grief, in contrast, though painful, enriches us and provides us with a deeper level of meaning and gratitude for life. Rhonda and I are very sad for Mike's many losses, now and in the past as well. But we are both grateful to have him as a friend, and cherish him tremendously. Thank you, Mike, for letting us in today! Warmly, Mike, Rhonda and David Following the session, I emailed Mike to ask a couple questions about peoples' names, and also find out if we might have perhaps let him down during the podcast, not given him enough space to grieve, and so forth. When I get worried about things like that, I have found that checking it out usually beats “Mind-Reading” by a pretty huge margin. Here's the wonderful email that Mike sent. It will give you a deeper view of his inner warmth and depth. Hi David, Thank you for your kind words. I experienced our time together as deeply moving and came out of it with a renewed sense of purpose in the sadness. I guess my hope was that we might be able to illustrate and share the value in empathy and the positive reframe in our grief work. That was enhanced to a new level for me with the way you guided me to explore some aspects I had missed. I wouldn't change a thing about it. It also opened up the way in which your stories and the journey we go on with clients can provide healing for others. I am so grateful that you were willing to take that time to revisit them. Our son's name was Graeme Michael. He was in between our oldest (Thomas now 25) and our middle daughter (Janae now 22). We (my wife Janna and I) never had the opportunity to hear his voice or see him smile. We were informed that it was a chord accident. Janna knew something was wrong and an ultrasound confirmed that she would have to deliver him knowing he was already gone. The first time we held him was also the last. Whenever people ask me how many children I have I say 3 (Thomas, Janae & Caelyn -19  & you will meet soon)  but in my mind it is always 4. Thank you for asking. My wife Janna is a nurse and the director of a pregnancy outreach program. She has been blessed with the opportunity to work with at-risk pregnant moms and young families for 17 years and our experience has brought incredible connection and support to so many (I also worked there for 7 years part time with the young dads). While we would never wish our journey on anyone, the suffering of loss has given us insight, motivation, inspiration, understanding and opportunities that we would never have without it. The sadness has deep purpose and meaning and continues to be an expression of our love for Graeme and all the young families we meet. Mike

Cory Walts was hired as the Director of Strength & Conditioning at the University of Pennsylvania in April 2019. Walts came to Penn from nearby Haverford College, where he spent 12 years as the head strength and conditioning coach and fitness center director. During that time, he designed and implemented year-round sports performance programs for a majority of Haverford's 23 varsity sports and several club sports teams. He utilized a holistic approach to create robust individuals and teams, focusing on physiological qualities (movement skill, strength, power, speed, agility, and energy systems); psychological qualities (growth mindset, grit, and internal motivation through the use of education, autonomy and accountability); and lifestyle qualities (positive habit formation in sleep, nutrition, hydration, and mindfulness). During Walts' tenure, a number of Haverford teams reached unprecedented heights. The volleyball program won three consecutive Centennial Conference titles under Walts' guidance and reached the NCAA Regional semifinals in 2014, while men's soccer advanced to the 2015 NCAA Elite Eight. From the spring season, baseball won three conference titles, advanced to the NCAA Regionals and had two student-athletes drafted in the eighth round of the MLB Draft, while softball advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals for the first time in 2016. Haverford also had 12 student-athletes selected as National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and EAS Sports All-Americans during his last five years on campus. In addition to his work with Haverford student-athletes, Walts served as director of the Joe Schwartz '83 Memorial 3K Run/Walk, which raised more than $75,000 for ALS research and had more than 2,000 participants from the campus community. He taught multiple classes within Haverford's Physical Education program and co-created the Healthy Mind/Healthy Body and Employee Wellness Committees, multi-department initiatives aimed at enhancing student and employee wellness respectively. Walts is co-Head of the Philadelphia Area Strength & Conditioning Association, which fosters relationships and develops knowledge specific to the profession of Strength & Conditioning for those in and around the Philadelphia area. He also is a member of West Chester University's Exercise Science Advisory Board and oversees the Strength and Conditioning program for the Marian Anderson Recreation Center in South Philadelphia. In 2013, Walts was a finalist for the NSCA College Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year Award. Walts graduated magna cum laude from Ithaca College in 2005 with a major in clinical exercise science and played four years for the football program. Following internships with the strength and conditioning departments at Cornell University and the Buffalo Bills, he earned his master's degree in kinesiology from the University of Maryland in 2007. Walts also worked with the Terps' strength and conditioning department during his two years in College Park, serving as the strength and conditioning coach for men's tennis and assisted with football, men's and women's basketball, and men's and women's swimming. Walts is a Certified (with Distinction) Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and a Certified Level 1 Sports Performance Coach with USA Weightlifting. How Skillful is your Shrink! Now you can find out! The Exciting Recovery Coefficient-- and the FEAR the grips the hearts of the therapists who are afraid to use it! People often wonder how skillful or effective their therapist is, but until now, there was no very valid or precise way to know. But now there is, and it has fantastic implications for psychotherapy. Today, we feature an interview with Kevin Cornelius, a therapist at the Feeling Good Institute in Mountain View, California.  Kevin Cornelius is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in private practice at Feeling Good Institute, with in-person counseling for teens .Kevin is a Certified Level 4 Advanced TEAM-CBT Therapist and Trainer. I asked Kevin to write a brief description of his evolution from a career in acting to his career as a shrink. Here's what he wrote: After many years of working as an actor I was ready for a change. After some painful personal events, I saw a therapist who was quite helpful to me. She helped me see that changing to a career as a therapist could be a great thing for me. I went to school and got my Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy. Just before I began applying for internships to complete licensure, I learned that the children's theatre group I had grown up in was looking for a new supervisor to lead the group following the death of its beloved founder and leader. This was a wonderful opportunity for me to use my theatre skills and my desire to help young people in their growth and development. I was very fortunate to be hired and worked as the director of the children's theatre group for 19 years. Towards the end of my years with the children's theatre, I was ready for a change and thought it might be time for me to finish getting my therapy license. It had been 15 years since I had worked with a patient in a therapy session, so I had a lot to learn! I was so lucky to discover David Burns and his amazing TEAM-CBT. The testing element of TEAM enabled me to see right away where I needed to improve so I could focus my efforts on improving specific skills. Being able to study with David in his Tuesday group at Stanford was a golden opportunity. Here was a framework designed to make therapy as effective as possible being taught (for free!) by one of the world's greatest therapists. I'm so happy I followed David's advice to get involved at Feeling Good Institute while I was still pre-licensed. Learning TEAM while I was completing the process to earn my license as a therapist enabled me to start my career in private practice with confidence and a stable foundation. Now, I get to continue learning from mentors at Feeling Good Institute, from the wonderful Feeling Good Podcast, and the valuable lessons I get from my patients. I'll sum up my good fortune with a theatre reference and quote the Gershwins: "Who could ask for anything more?" Kevin recently made the courageous decision to find out exactly how he was doing as a therapist. And the results surprised him tremendously. Background Information for today's podcast Outcome studies with competing schools of psychotherapy in the treatment of depression have been disappointing. They all seem to come out about the same, slightly better than placebos, but not much. For example, in the British CoBalT study of 469 depressed patients treated with antidepressants vs antidepressants plus CBT, only 44% of the patients treated with antidepressants plus CBT experienced a 50% improvement in depression after six months of treatment, and the multi-year follow-up results weren't any better. This was better than the patients treated with antidepressants alone, (only 22% experienced a 50% improvement), but still—to my way of thinking—very poor. We see more improvement than that in just one day in patients using the Feeling Good App. Here are just two of many online references to that landmark study: https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanpsy/article/PIIS2215-0366(15)00495-2/fulltext https://www.thelancet.com/pdfs/journals/lanpsy/PIIS2215-0366(15)00495-2.pdf Because of the disappointing results of research on the so-called "schools" of psychotherapy, the focus is switching, to some extent, to the effects of individual therapists, since even within a school of therapy, there can be huge differences in therapists' effectiveness. Some therapists seem to have the proverbial “green thumb,” with many patients improving rapidly, while others seem much less effective. Is there a way to measure this? Now there is! And do patients have a right to know how effective their shrinks are? That's what I'm proposing! For at least twenty years or more, I've been trying to sell therapists on my Brief Mood Survey with every patient at every session. That's because you can see exactly and immediately how depressed, anxious, or angry, etc. your patient was at the start and end of today's session. This allows therapists to see, for the first time, exactly how much the patient improved in various dimensions within the session, as well as how much the patient relapsed or continued to improve between sessions. Here's a simple example. To make things really clear, let's imagine that your depression test goes from 0 (not at all depressed) to 100 (the worst depression imaginable, and your patient has an 80 at the start of today's session. That would indicate a horrendously severe depression, similar to patients hospitalized with depression. And yet, your patient might be functioning effectively, and might appear reasonably happy. So, bonus #1, you can see exactly how your patient was feeling at the start of the session. You might think of the BMS as an “emotional X-ray machine.” Now, let's assume you have an excellent session, and feel like you're clicking with the patient, and the patient scores 40 on the end-of-session BMS. That would be a phenomenal 50% improvement. Of course, a score of 40 means that the patient is still moderately depressed, and has a way to go, still the goal is a score of 0 on the depression test and a huge boost in the patient's score on the happiness test on the BMS. Keep in mind that in the dozens of psychotherapy outcome studies that have been published worldwide, the very highest levels of improvement in months and months of therapy are  never higher than this. So, I call this the Recovery Coefficient (RC), and it is a very precise measure of any therapist's effectiveness in treating anything you can measure accurately. In an informal study of de-identified data of more than 10,000 therapy sessions at a local treatment center about two years ago. I discovered that the RC the first time therapists met with their patients predicted the improvement over the entire course of therapy. In addition, different therapists had vastly different initial RC scores, which can range from -100% in a single session (meaning a complete elimination of symptoms)  to +100% in a single session (meaning severe worsening.) Sadly, because all patient or therapist identifying information was removed to protect identities, I had no way of letting the therapists know their skill levels! But today, we are joined by a therapist who had the guts to calculate his RC in ten patients to see how he was doing. He was initial incredibly demoralize with his percent reductions (RC) of 45% for depression and 47% for anxiety in 50 minute sessions,  He reasoned that a 44% in a class would be a failing grade, but I pointed out that this isn't the right comparison. After all, if you had a contract to build the Brooklyn Bridge, and could complete nearly half of it in 50 minutes, you'd be doing something incredibly amazing. Kevin's Depression and Anxiety Recovery Coefficient Calculations     Depression Anxiety Empathy 1 Before 6 14 20 After 3 1   % Change -50.00% -92.86%       Depression Anxiety Empathy 2 Before 5 6 20 After 1 3   % Change -80.00% -50.00%       Depression Anxiety Empathy 3 Before 12 10 20 After 9 9   % Change -25.00% -10.00%       Depression Anxiety Empathy 4 Before 10 5 20 After 5 3   % Change -50.00% -40.00%       Depression Anxiety Empathy 5 Before 5 9 18 After 3 5   % Change -40.00% -44.44%       Depression Anxiety Empathy 6 Before 18 15 20 After 10 9   % Change -44.44% -40.00%       Depression Anxiety Empathy 7 Before 14 12 20 After 10 6   % Change -28.57% -50.00%       Depression Anxiety Empathy 8 Before 2 9 18 After 4 5   % Change 50.00% -44.44%       Depression Anxiety Empathy 9 Before 2 1 20 After 0 1   % Change -100.00% 0.00%       Depression Anxiety Empathy 10 Before 6 5 20 After 1 0   % Change -83.33% -100.00%       Depression Anxiety Empathy Recovery Coefficient   -45.13% -47.17% 19.6                     And indeed, Kevin's scores actually showed he was outperforming all the published outcome studies on depression by a factor of several hundred. Which was, I think, a well-deserved pleasant shock to his system! I've always had tremendous admiration and respect for Keven because of his obvious great skill and intelligence combined with world-class compassion and humility. In addition, patients complete the Evaluation of Therapy Session (ETS) immediately after the session, and rate the therapist on Empathy, Helpfulness, and other crucially important dimensions. Kevin's Empathy score was 19.6 (96.5%), indicating near perfect empathy ratings from his patients. This is extremely impressive, since most therapists get failing Empathy scores from nearly all of their patients when they start using the ETS scales. However, what was really cool is that Kevin brought the Daily Mood Log he prepared prior to the podcast. As you can see if you check the link, recording his intense negative feelings and self-critical thoughts when he initially completed his calculations. This helps to explain the fear that so many therapists—nearly all—feel when it comes to being accountable for the first time in the history of psychotherapy. Here's what he was telling himself: I'm not doing well enough. I'm fooling myself. I'm letting my patients down. I'm a fraud. I should be better. I should charge less. I suck! During the podcast, we used some TEAM-CBT to deal with these concerns live, in real time, using Positive Reframing, Identify the Distortions, Examine the Evidence, and Externalization of Voices to smash these thoughts. If you'd like to see the Positive Reframing Table he brought to the session, you can check here. In Kevin's case, the RC calculations, which are simple and only take a minute, gave him a huge gift—the confirmation of his immense technical therapeutic skills as well as his empathy. But what if you're not like Kevin, and you discover that your RCs are not so great, and that your Empathy ratings are in the failing range. Isn't that kind of terrible? Well, it depends on how big your ego is, and how motivated you are to improve. I've gotten plenty of horrible ratings on the ETS, and have had lots of sessions with poor outcomes, including sessions when I wrongly believed I was doing a great job. It DOES hurt. But over the years, my patients have dramatically shaped my therapy approach, and have become my greatest teachers by far. I now enjoy pretty tremendous outcomes with the vast majority of the people I treat, but could never have improved without the constant feedback. Psychotherapy skills are a lot like athletic workouts, and they say, “no pain, no gain.” This is definitely just as true for shrinks. Are you a shrink? Do you have the courage to check out your skills? Here are a couple more random comments. Over the years I've seen the scores of many therapists in training, and many established shrinks in the community. And sometimes I've been surprised that some of the big name, flashy people were actually very unskilled in real therapy situations. And I've also seen that some of the giants of our field, were humble, kindly individuals, like Kevin, who were quietly working miracles, but not even realizing it. And I also had this brainstorm. If you're a patient, and your shrink refuses to use the BMS and ETS, for whatever reason, you could take the test prior to and after each session, and calculate your therapist's Empathy Scores and Recovery Coefficient scores. Mmm. I am thinking there might be a business model in here somewhere! Like a website where you could take the tests and get all the calculations automatically. And maybe that type of information could be published... After all, wouldn't patients LOVE to have this information BEFORE going to a new shrink for treatment. And isn't that EXACTLY where our field should be moving? Accountability and transparency? I hope you enjoyed meeting the incredible Kevin Cornelius today. Thank you for listening and supporting our Feeling Good Podcasts! Warmly, david

As I support more and more women with Internal Family Systems (IFS), both in 1-1 and group work, one of the most common questions I get is: how do I stay connected with this work, and with my parts, in between our sessions? In response to this, one of the books I most often recommend to help do this is written by today's guest. Michelle Glass is a Certified Level 3 IFS Practitioner and author of the Daily Parts Meditation Practice™: A Journey of Embodied Integration for Clients and Therapists. She first came to IFS to help her heal from a childhood of abuse and complex PTSD and she now uses it to support many others. In our conversation today, Michelle and I speak about: - What her personal journey with IFS was like when she was healing from childhood abuse and complex PTSD - Ways that a daily parts meditation practice can support us in our healing journeys - What her process was like of writing her book - And, Michelle also leads us through an in-depth parts meditation, which I know many of you will want to bookmark and return to again and again. If you're curious about IFS, want to learn some more potent and practical tools to connect with the various parts of yourself more regularly, and are needing an infusion of some new wisdom and inspiration into your healing journey, my conversation with Michelle will give you all of these. TLDL actionable takeaways: 1) Biggest non-food factors that contribute to stress: i) Chronic stress (and no, we don't mean the goal is to not HAVE stress, but to make sure you are balancing it with nervous system resetting practices like deep belly breathing). ii) Hormonal imbalances (both in men and women) iii) The WAY you are eating or drinking- for example, swallowing too much air when eating or drinking, eating too fast, etc 2) What the gut-brain connection ACTUALLY means: "there's a 'super highway' of communication between your gut and your brain" where your brain asks "is it SAFE for me to send blood flow to the gut to optimize digestion right now?". 3) Isabel's first line-of-defense tools for bloating you can practice on your own: i) 3-4 deep belly breathing (NOT puffing your chest out but actively puffing out your belly) a few times throughout your day and ESPECIALLY before eating ii) Regular BMs: for constipation people can try magnesium oxide or citrate, concentrated aloe vera, digestive bitters (herbs or foods/drinks like dandelion, coffee, arugula, dill, etc), self message, heating pads or even yoga twists. Hydration is also important here and Isabel recommends focusing on electrolytes like those in coconut water and vegetable juices iii) Avoid drinking through straws iv) Eat slowly and CHEW food WELL v) Avoid frequent consumption through aluminum cans (due to heavy metals which can add to toxic burden) 5) Common reasons for bloating you might find on a stool test: parasites, bacterial overgrowth, mold exposure, candida, H. pylori, low levels of digestive enzymes, etc. 6) You can also register for Isabel's new 6 week program The Bloat Free Blueprint, which opens for enrollment on September 12th! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/curious-women/support

On this episode of Financially Naked: Stories from The Financial Gym, our host is Genar Mendez, a Certified Level 2 Financial Trainer, and he is joined by Gym client Christian Prince. Christian is a digital nomad, who has worked in tech recruitment for over seven years. In 2021, he decided to pursue his dreams of playing professional basketball and living overseas. He just finished playing his first season in Spain with a team in Valencia. Today, Genar interviews Christian about his journey from deciding to become a digital nomad, the lessons learned along the way, to what's next on the horizon.  Podcast Notes Genar opens by asking Christian to share what started his journey of becoming a digital nomad. In 2020, Christian felt like he was up against a wall emotionally, spiritually, and physically. He knew he needed to make a change, but didn't know what was next. He took a leap of faith, quit his job, and stepped into the unknown. In the back of his mind, he dreamed of living abroad, and didn't know it at the time, but was planting the seeds to make it happen. Many people can relate to Christian's story about feeling stuck. It takes enormous courage and faith to leap into the unknown. Genar asks Christian what advice he'd give someone who might be feeling stuck but afraid to take that leap. Christian could feel physically in his body that a change needed to happen. The feeling was there, building and building. Your body and mind will tell you or you may feel trapped in a negative space. It's important to have a plan in place. Quitting a job might not be a realistic option for some people. Christian talks about what the steps looked like for him. In 2020, he realized he wasn't pursuing his dreams, he asked himself if he'd rather go for it all and fail or be the person who followed someone else's path. He made the decision to pursue something he wanted. Around that time, he heard about a basketball summer league in Spain. He got tunnel vision on this goal and started working hard to get to this camp. He wanted to be in that environment and started taking on extra side jobs and saving as much as he could. In May of 2021 he was able to compete in the summer league. He was playing basketball twice a day. There were games, practices, and weight training. Going through this process finally felt like he was pursuing his dreams. He felt like things were going in the right direction and was exposed to a remote work opportunity. He started writing and sharing on Medium, which was a great platform for blogging and sharing his story. In January, he started a remote position as a recruiter. This job allows him to work from anywhere and continue to pursue his basketball and his writing. All of his dreams and passions came together in a unique way. Once the big picture came into focus, he was able to get clear on what he wanted and put in the work. Everything started falling into place. When we let go of what isn't serving us anymore, we get more clear about what we want. Now Christian gets to live out his dreams working in the recruiter position and traveling as a digital nomad. Christian would have been more open with his friends and family and used his voice to be more transparent throughout the process.  Christian shares about culture shocks he experienced: Living and being a resident in Spain was very different from his time studying abroad. Their pace and way of life are very different from America. It's much slower and work isn't the central focus of everyone's lives. It seems like in America, we live to work, and over there, people work to live. He took some Spanish classes and really immersed himself in the language. He loved how people really bring you in and make you feel like part of the family. Christian talks through what this all looked like financially: He shouts out Gina, and says without her and Financial Gym, none of this would be possible for him. What helped Christian develop a budget and stick to it was getting very clear about what the goal was. He was connected to the dream of living in Spain. It's about not being impulsive and making sacrifices in the short term to accomplish those big goals. Christian talks about how he takes everything one day, week, and month at a time. He met with Gina before Spain and planned the next few months. Being able to execute the plan made him feel like a financially responsible adult. Christian shares the greatest lesson he's learned being a digital nomad and living abroad: Have faith in being rooted in your purpose. There are things that may not go as planned, mistakes, and failures, but they are helping you build resilience to take the bigger leaps in life. He has been able to let go of the fear and anxiety, and see life more clearly. He feels like he's on the right path and continues to learn every day. Christian is a multidisciplinary creative, as a freelance writer and a DJ. An avid world traveler, he has been to 13 countries and counting. He looks forward to playing basketball in the UK this upcoming season while continuing to work as a digital nomad and creative.  Connect with Christian Medium: Medium.com/@cprincejr Instagram: @christianprinc3 Meet The Trainer Meet Genar Mendez, Level 2 Certified Financial Trainer

On this episode of Financially Naked: Stories from The Financial Gym, Joy, Head of Trainer Academy, is joined by one of her long time friends, Belma McCaffrey, Founder of Work Bigger. Belma's story resonates with Joy and a lot of the clients that come through The Financial Gym. Today, they're talking about finding your ‘superpower' and how you can use that to connect to your life's purpose. For anyone who is looking to make a change or is asking the question, ‘what do I want to do with my life?' this conversation is not one you'll want to miss.  Podcast Notes Work Bigger is for dissatisfied big achievers, asking the question, ‘What do I want to do with my life?' It is the resource Belma needed in her 20's. At the time, she struggled to know what she wanted to do with her career but knew she wanted to make an impact. When she went back to business school, Belma quickly realized she was not the only person with this problem. Work Bigger was born to be the solution and is helpful for people who feel a little lost.  Joy works with a number of clients who go through this struggle. A huge aspect of building a financial plan is setting goals that are meaningful to you. Once it's clear what those goals are, it's easier to set action steps and make them happen. Changing your mindset without knowing the bigger purpose can be challenging.   Joy asks Belma to define ‘superpower' and why it's important to know what yours is.  It's ‘what do I care about, and why?' Your thumbprint, or what really makes you unique. It's about identifying what is the special value that you can add to this world. Once we know and understand our superpowers, they can be activated. How do you start the process of finding your superpower?  Belma has a class that goes into more detail: linked here, but shares the highlights.  There are four clues: emotions, actions, feedback, & understanding your WHY.  Emotions: What are you doing when you're feeling in the flow? We have positive and negative responses, identify what you're doing when you are feeling positive.  Actions: What do you find yourself doing when you're in a place of flow? Understand that behavior.  Feedback: What are other people reflecting back to you your superpower is?  Your WHY: Understanding who you are and what drives you. Once you're clear on that, you can get more clear on the work you do every day.  It's a journey of self-discovery and is totally normal to not have all the answers without going through the process.  Joy asks, ‘How did you get to the clues and what are your superpowers that lead you to Work Bigger?'  It took Belma a lot of work to figure out the four clues and did so by tapping into her own journey. She thought her dissatisfaction with the workplace was the workplace's fault. But she pivoted and started having conversations with people in similar situations, connecting with them mentally and emotionally.  She started by reading a lot of books including What Color is my Parachute? and Big Book of Jobs. She thought if she could see the job, something would click for her.  She spent time researching and speaking with therapists and coaches. She put together a beta and it was a culmination of worksheets and questions that she was working on with other people.   Understanding your emotional landscape is foundational. Before the resume, the cover letter, or any of that, the foundation must be built. Navigating the external world is easier once the internal compass is set. Joy asks, ‘What are some emotional or behavioral cues that led you to this work and guiding others?'  Belma has always gravitated towards the big picture, strategic thinking, which comes into play when she is coaching clients. She feels energized and connected when she is teaching, speaking, and supporting clients.  Joy talks about how guiding people through a transformation or action that they wanted to do, but couldn't quite make happen themselves.  She gets to meet people where they are, ask questions, and present solutions. It's about finding pathways to accomplish the things they want with more ease. She previously worked in advertising and uses the skills from that job in this role, which is more fulfilling for Joy.  Belma talks about how they encounter this a lot at Work Bigger. Working a job that is unfulfilling or one that isn't helping with your financial goals can be a real barrier in the process. Using what you're naturally good at can help propel you to your goals.  Joy asks Belma what are some common struggles people are facing when they join Work Bigger? What inspires them to join?  Money and career are so connected. Belma talks about how they see a mindset and fear around money at Work Bigger. There's a fear of pivoting because making a change has financial impacts. It's important to have a healthy mindset around money and leverage a career that will serve your life and your well-being. With clarity comes the ability to make more intentional decisions. You don't have to stay at a job that isn't paying you enough or is unfulfilling.  Joy asks Belma to share some of the pivots and transitions she's witnessed.  They see people launching their own businesses and projects. Sometimes what they thought was going to take years, they're able to accomplish in a few months. Others make smaller pivots because they realize they don't need a huge change. They see it all at Work Bigger.  What really matters is that each individual is clear on what they want. The best thing that can happen through this process is discovering what's best for you.  There are stories out there where people make it happen really quickly, but that's not most people's reality. At Work Bigger, the focus is on following the path in a healthy and sustainable way. Belma didn't jump into Work Bigger full-time, she was able to do it by cutting back from her full-time job.  Through the process of discovery, you may find what lights you up isn't necessarily related to your work. The corporate job can be more bearable when you know it's a tool to help you do what really lights you up. It doesn't have to check every box.   The superpower can take different forms. Knowing your superpower is wonderful and it can come up in other areas of your life, like a side hustle or hobby.  Work Bigger has a free class about how to find your superpower. It goes through the internal process but also how to manifest that into the world. What does that look like, is it your next job, a new business, or something out. It helps you let go of the pressure and to help you find a way to feel connected every day as much as possible.   If you're looking to dig in and find your superpower, check out workbigger.co and register for the FREE class.  Connect with Work Bigger  Website: Work Bigger Instagram: @workbiggerLinkedIn: Belma McCaffrey Meet The Trainer Joy Liu, Certified Level 2 Financial Trainer & Head of Trainer Academy

On this episode of Financially Naked: Stories from The Financial Gym, our host is Mike Poulin, a DC-based, Level 2 Certified Financial Trainer. Today's guest, Liz,  is a West Coast-based client in her early 30's, who works in Blockchain. She first learned about The Gym through an Instagram ad, and has been a member for three years! She's come such a long way from when she first started and is here to share her experience as a member and celebrate the wins that have happened along the way!  Podcast Notes When Liz first started with The Financial Gym:  Total net worth: $ - 28,938  Credit Score: 670  1-3 year goals: Pay down debt, save for a house, & travel through Europe.  3-5 year goals: Get married,     Liz's numbers now, three years later:  Total net worth: $179,752 (a positive change of almost $200,000)  Credit Score: in the 700's    Mike asks Liz how it feels to hear the numbers from three years ago.   Hearing those numbers reminds Liz of all of the guilt and shame she was feeling years ago before she started her financial journey.  Now she feels empowered and understands how to set meaningful goals and manage her money. She learned financial health is about figuring out what is important to you and setting financial boundaries with yourself and the outside world.  Other than traveling through Europe (circumstances outside of all of our control), Liz has accomplished all of the goals she set. She paid down the debt, purchased a home, and is getting married in a few weeks.   She feels proud of all of the work she's done and talks about how this has been a life-changing experience.   If your financial journey is a road trip,  A Financial Trainer is the GPS. Ultimately, you are in the driver's seat, and your Trainer is there to guide you along the way. The Financial Gym gives you the tools needed to drive the car and help get you where you want to go.  A huge part of a financial journey is working on mindset.  Have compassion for yourself. Everyone is coming from a different background, and we can learn and make positive changes.  If you've been in debt for a long time, working through a scarcity mindset to focus on abundance can be a challenge.  There are small changes and shifts that make a huge difference. For example, reframing ‘bad habits' as ‘old habits' is a small, but compassionate language shift.    Those first few milestones feel the most exciting when you're starting out. She remembers saving the first $1,000 into her emergency fund, and how that was the first time there was a comma in her bank account for longer than a few hours. It felt empowering to save money for the first time.  Liz recently had a significant financial win/windfall/circumstance She works at a startup, which is doing really well financially. The company was recently purchased, and Liz received a significant payout from Stocks she owned in the company.  Even if you never expect or plan for a financial windfall, they do happen, and it opens up a lot of possibilities. Being clear on your values and your goals beforehand will help you be prepared if something like this happens. What are YOUR goals, not the ones society tells you are important? Mike asks what Liz wants everyone to know about working with The Financial Gym  It is a judgment-free zone. Before her first session, Liz hadn't sat down to face the numbers. When it came time to meet for the first session, she was nervous and almost canceled the meeting.  When she went through the numbers, Lindsay, her Trainer at the time, did not flinch or make a face as she revealed her debt.  Your financial plan will not be all about cutting everything you enjoy. Your Trainer will help you figure out what is most important, and tell you how to reach all of your goals.  Ultimately, you are in the driver's seat. There is no one-size-fits-all for goals and financial planning. Success looks different for everyone, and it's about focusing on what is important to you.  If you are feeling shame about your current financial circumstance, you are not alone. Many Americans are living paycheck to paycheck or in debt. There are people out there to help you.  There is a light at the end of the tunnel. A financial journey takes time, and it can feel like you'll never get ahead. You can make a change!  If you're ready for a change or want to learn more about working with a Certified Financial Trainer, schedule a free warm-up call to learn more!   Meet The Trainer Meet Mike Poulin, Certified Level 2 Financial Trainer

On this episode of Financially Naked: Stories from The Financial Gym, our host is Jazmin, a Certified Level 2 Financial Trainer based in California. Today, she is joined by Carlos and Yuni Garcia. Carlos is a Licensed Real Estate Agent in California and works together with his wife, Yuni. When you're ready to buy or sell a home, choosing the right real estate agent can make all the difference, especially in a competitive market. Carlos and Yuni are here to share their insights about what the home buying experience should look like and red flags to keep in mind when interviewing prospective agents.  Podcast Notes What does a real estate agent do, and when should someone work with one?  It is a real estate agent's job to represent buyers and sellers with honesty and integrity. You can work with one when you're buying or selling a home.  In these competitive times, a great agent can make all the difference. They are out there every day and know the ins and outs of the market.  They can provide a Comparative Market Analysis (CMA) - a tool used to estimate the value of a specific property by evaluating similar ones that have recently sold in the area. Each buyer and level of purchase is different. Everyone has their own background, goals, needs, and limits when it comes to purchasing a home.  A great agent will guide you through the process and make it fun because they are experts in the field.  Qualities of a GREAT real estate agent:  From the beginning of the process, they are timely and communicative. Great communication is important. They should make themselves available.  They take the time to answer your questions and share valuable information. It's an educational process, and they should be willing to teach you along the way.   Someone who checks your references and makes sure you will be a good fit for them.  Someone who has credentials and experience in the field. Some questions to ask: ‘How long have you been in the business?'  ‘How many sales have you made?'  ‘Are you a top producer?'  ‘Are your offers being swiftly accepted?'  A great negotiator. Someone who will work to get you the best deal.  A person who will be straightforward and with you through the process. Their goal should be to get you into a home that you can truly afford in an area you want to live in.  What are some RED FLAGS to watch out for when interviewing real estate agents? As with every industry, there are predatory people in the real estate business.  An unresponsive agent can stall the process when it's time to put in offers. Watch out for someone who is unresponsive, or lacks timely communication.  A lack of professionalism, for example, arriving late or unprepared for meetings or showings.  Never surrender your deposit to people who are promising to give you a deal. That will ALWAYS go through escrow.  Why do some people look to sell their homes?  The last two years, there has been a desire to upsize. People working from home or realizing they would like a little more space.  Some folks want to downsize, or move to a different area.  Folks looking to invest in their long term future, and want to do so through real estate.  General best practices when preparing to buy a home:   Make a plan. There are many steps to ensure you're ready before starting the home buying process!  Your FICO score will determine the loans available to you. Aim to raise your score if it needs work.  Focus on your debt to income ratio.  Fund the emergency fund. Save for the down payment (anywhere between 5%-25%)  Practice making the mortgage payments and deposit that money into a savings account.  Get your pre-approval before getting in touch with real estate agents.  Have your documents prepared: 2 years of tax returns, paystubs or a letter from your accountant, and bank statements are a great place to start.  Do the research, use the internet and references from friends,  Always get a second option. This goes for lenders and real estate agents. It is a huge disservice to yourself to only get one opinion.  Work with a local, licensed agent, rather than one of the big platforms.  Remember, buying a home should be fun!    More on Home Buying & Home Ownership: Gymsplaining Mortgages and Refinancing  Buying a House Connect with Carlos and Yuni  Instagram: @0carlos0 Facebook: Facebook.com/carlosgarcia Meet The Trainer Meet Jazmin Higgins, Level 2 Certified Financial Trainer  You can become a Certified Financial Trainer, and build your own Financial Coaching Business! Elisa and I first bonded over our love of Gabor Mate. Yes, it happened like that. I met her during my summer trip to Italy and have kept in touch ever since. I wanted to have her on the podcast to discuss the practice of yoga's potential to calm our nervous system and help us reduce the impact trauma might have on our life. Trauma is a heavy, complicated and multi-faceted concept but amongst top trauma experts in the world such as Bessel Van De Kolk, Gabor Mate, Janina Fisher, and Steven Porges to name a few; trauma is something pretty much every human deals with both physically and mentally on some level. In this podcast, we talk a bit about trauma but really, we need a whole series of podcasts to unpack trauma and so we hope that this podcast opened you up to a new understanding of trauma and how often trauma lies in the body. Trauma-informed yoga is a practice designed to facilitate more options and possibilities for those in a yoga class, which is something as Elisa points out traumatised people have rarely had in their life, or at least that's how their nervous system and body perceives it. This was one of the most challenging podcasts I've been a part of because of its intricate nature but I really enjoyed it and I hope you take something from it. On this episode of Financially Naked: Stories from The Financial Gym, two of our trainers sit down to Gymsplain student loans. Mike, Level 2 Certified Financial Trainer, is joined by Joy, Head of Trainer Academy and Certified Financial Trainer. The general consensus around The Financial Gym: student loans are really no big deal. Common feelings surrounding student loan debt are often fear, anxiety, and shame. Joy and Mike hope to demystify these loans and provide some tips for your debt payoff journey. You don't have to scale the mountain of student loan debt before enjoying your life.  **Please note this episode was recorded before the government's decision to extend student loan payment pause through May 1, 2022. For more information on this check Federal Student Aid website. The advice still applies! Podcast Notes There are two main types of student loans: Federal Loans - provided by the government based on your FAFSA resultsPrivate Loans - provided by a private lender like a bank or company FEDERAL LOANS:  there are a few different types of federal student loan options.  Subsidized: government pays the interest while you are in school Unsubsidized: You're responsible for the interest accrued while in school  Parent Plus: Loans your parents take on your behalf Grad Plus: For graduate students based on a federal aid package   All of these federal loans have various repayment options. Standard, income-based, and gradual repayment plans are some examples.  Income-based repayment plans all come with loan forgiveness later down the road (20-25 years).  Public Service Forgiveness is available if you are employed by a U.S federal, state, local, or tribal government, or not-for-profit organization. This is a 120-month or 10-year program.  The Federal Government put an administrative pause on federal loans the last two years as part of COVID relief efforts, which is a huge benefit of federal loans.  You can apply for your own deferment or forbearance if you are personally experiencing a hardship.   Federal loans can be consolidated into one big federal loan. This opens up other repayment options and can simplify your payments.  You can refinance your federal loans into private loans, if you wish. Though it is rarely recommended because you lose the flexibility and benefits that come with federal loans.  Unlike other collections, student loans don't go away. You do have the option for loan rehabilitation. It's important to be prepared and organized for this process because you only have one chance with this program. A trainer can help get your ducks in a row.  PRIVATE LOANS:  Typically supplemental funds families take out if they don't have enough federal aid to cover the cost of school. They can be used to cover living expenses and fees and other school-related costs.  These are more similar to a traditional loan because they are held by a private lender, bank or company that handles only student loans  They are under no obligation to honor and forgiveness or other programs the government is offering with federal loans One perk of private loans is it is a competitive industry, so there are options for refinancing as your income and credit score increase.  OVERALL THOUGHTS ABOUT STUDENT LOANS  When it comes to student loans, the goal doesn't always have to be ‘get the balance to 0' Student loan payments are money you can't get back once you pay it.   Instead of paying student loans off early, there are other financial priorities to focus on, depending on your situation. It could be high-interest debt, saving into an emergency fund, or investing for retirement.  Student loans don't need to be an emotional burden or cause you stress.  Federal student loans came about during the cold war. They wanted to encourage a population full of people with higher education to keep them competitive in the space race and other global affairs.  Because there are no regulations around the cost of school, the price has gone up astronomically. There are a lot of issues within the workings of higher education and we carry that burden on our backs through these loans.  It is absolutely okay to just pay the minimum. The government prefers you pay the minimum and use your money to stimulate the economy. Doing things like saving for retirement, buying a home, shopping at local businesses. It was wonderful to see where it has taken her in her own life. BioBeth Lauren Parrish, a Certified Level 3 CHA Riding Instructor and Level 1 Certified Equestrian Tai Chi Instructor. On this episode of Financially Naked: Stories from The Financial Gym, our host is Joy Liu, Director of Trainer Academy.  She is joined by two of our new Certified Level 2 trainers based in  Los Angeles, Jazmin and Yenny.  As Director of Trainer Academy, Joy has the pleasure of onboarding all of the new trainers when they join the team and certifying them to become trainers. On the show today, Jazmin and Yenny will introduce themselves and discuss how they found The Gym, some personal stories, and what excites them most about being part of the team. Podcast Notes HOW WERE YOU LED TO THE GYM Yenny's personal finance journey started when she was young. She grew up in a low-income immigrant household, where there was always a feeling of scarcity around money. This kind of mindset was motivating, but led to fear based choices in her adult life. Once she started earning a higher salary, she didn't know what to do with the money. She wanted to set goals for herself and make the money feel personal and intentional. A friend sent her the Financial Gym's Instagram page and she followed for a year. Once she honed in on what she wanted to do as a career, she applied to The Gym.  Jazmin had the experience growing up on welfare fairly early in life. She decided to go her own route and got married after graduating high school. She found herself taking on debt before making the money to pay it off. Without many examples growing up, it was hard to make a plan. I went to school, took out student loans and started a family. Her income at the time was solely supporting the family and there wasn't room for much else. She found herself in six figures of debt, and wanted to get serious about personal finance. She dove deep into reading and researching, learning as much as possible about personal finance. The Gym was one of many resources she found. Through the process, she began sharing her knowledge with friends, family, and members of her church. The lack of access to quality financial education is what attracted Jazmin to The Gym.  At The Gym, it is important for the clients to know their trainer has walked in their shoes. They've been on their own finance journeys and want to help usher others.  There can be an assumption that a financial professional has always done the right thing or led a perfect financial life, and that shouldn't be the case.  Before your personal finance journey.. What was your best decision and the biggest learning opportunity? For best decisions, Yenny talks about taking out less than the maximum amount of student loans and buying her first home. While she doesn't live in that home anymore, she was able to sell it for a profit. The home was also the biggest learning opportunity because it needed a lot of work and she wasn't financially or mentally prepared at the time for it.  Jazmin shares a story about her friend asking her about contributing to their workplace 401k. This friend explained the employer match and the importance of compound interest. This was a huge turning point for Jazmin's journey. Years later, she can see the effects of those earlier contributions growing. The biggest opportunity, a timeshare, which Jazmin was introduced to at a Dodgers game. She was able to pay it off, but it was painful. TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY  Yenny lives with her husband and they don't have any children or fur babies right now. As a child of immigrants, giving back and taking care of family, including financially, is incredibly important to her. She's learned to set boundaries and set up systems that work well for her and her family. This looks like family plans for insurance and phone bills and sharing my resources and knowledge with my family so they can empower themselves. She has a strong financial connection to them, which is common in many cultures.  Jazmin and her husband have two teenagers and two dogs. Her teenagers are very athletic so she's always at various games and meets. Back when we first started on this personal finance journey as a family, her husband was a huge part of that. They would listen to money talk shows on the radio and have conversations based on quotes from the show. The kids had an allowance, which gave them the opportunity to be part of the family journey and learn with their own money. Her husband now is all about finding ways to earn passive income. He's incredibly strategic and thoughtful about their budget and it keeps the whole family motivated and excited. Jazmin's family has started a number of physical locations and service-based businesses. She is an advocate for starting these without taking on debt.  WHAT KIND OF CLIENTS ARE YOU HOPING TO ATTRACT  Yenny hopes to work with folks who are new to the security of money and what it can provide.  Jazmin hopes to work with folks who have messy, sticky, situations. She loves taking a financial puzzle and putting the pieces together.  If you resonate with Jazmin or Yenny's stories and want to work with them, book a complimentary warm-up call today. Let your consultant know that you're ready to work with one of them. They're so excited to get YOU started on your own financial journey!    Meet The Trainers Meet Joy Liu, Head of Trainer Academy  Meet Jazmin Higgins, Level 2 Certified Financial Trainer  Meet Yenny Urquilla, Level 2 Certified Financial Trainer

DRA, the separation of the abdominal muscles most often associated in women with pregnancy, is very close to my heart and I am so excited to bring you this AMAZING conversation on the research on #exercise for #diastasisrecti with David Larson @dmlarson31 dmlarson@asu.edu   Aside from discussing what research we do have , the drawbacks of this limited data, and the physiology behind the effects of adequate load on connective tissue, he talks about his research into patient satisfaction with exercise programs. Just because as professionals we think someone is better, doesn't mean they feel that way.    Bio from Arizona State University website: (see below for reference list) David is a Lecturer and Coordinator for CHS100/300 in the College of Health Solutions at Arizona State University.  David earned a Doctoral degree in Health Science from A. T. Still University, Masters degree in Kinesiology from A. T. If you’re interested in becoming a Google Certified educator (level 1, level 2, trainer, or innovator), this is the episode for you! And if you’re wondering why you should care or be interested, here’s a fun fact: this entire podcast wouldn’t exist if I hadn’t become Google Certified. Neither would my book. I wouldn’t be talking to you today if I hadn’t taken those steps! Let’s dive in! First, I’ll explore what Level 1 certification means, and what you can expect from the test. I’ll then talk about some ways to prepare for the exam. I’ll then do the same for Level 2. At that point, you might be wondering about the differences between the training that Google offers compared to my courses. Don’t worry, I’ll explain exactly how they’re different! From there, I’ll talk about becoming a Google Certified Trainer. I’ll cover the various requirements (one of which I didn’t meet the first time I applied!) as well as the six steps to becoming a Certified Trainer. I’ve helped thousands of people become Google Certified, and I can help you, too! I hope this episode has answered a lot of your questions and explained why the programs are so great, and I look forward to taking the next steps with you.   In This Episode: [00:28] - Welcome back to the podcast! Today’s episode is all about Google certification, Kasey explains. [02:02] - Before we talk about Google Certification, Kasey takes a moment to send a shout out to all of the new Google Certified Innovators from the Sydney class of 2019! [03:25] - It’s time to talk about how to get Google Certified! Kasey explains why the process is so important to her. [06:18] - Kasey offers listeners a FREE ebook: The Complete Guide to Google Certifications! [06:46] - We learn about the Google for Education Teacher Center. [07:34] - Let’s talk about Level 1 and Level 2 certification first! Kasey explains what a Level 1 educator can do, and chats about how to prepare. [11:11] - Kasey goes deeper into what’s covered in the Level 1 exam. [13:26] - We move onto Level 2, which requires being able to “successfully integrate a wider range of Google for Education tools and other technologies.” [15:40] - Kasey talks about the requirements for becoming Level 2 Certified, and mentions what’s covered in the exam. [17:38] - We learn about Kasey’s Level 2 Toolkit, which is another three-in-one download. [18:27] - Kasey takes a moment to talk specifically about the self-paced, video-based courses that she offers for Level 1 and Level 2. We got to chatting about - How his moustache has helped him step into his manhood - How we need to care less about how it looks & more about how it feels (not just in yoga) - The story of how he met his girlfriend (it may surprise you!) - How to navigate being authentic & building business when creating a personal brand - Lots more, jump in below to check it out. Recently becoming a Certified Level 1 Trainer and creating a series of workouts for those with missing limbs.
