About Dr. Wanda Barfield Wanda Barfield, MD, MPH, FAAP, is the Director of the Division of Reproductive Health (DRH) within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). She also serves as Assistant Surgeon General in the U.S. Public Health Service. She received her medical and public health degrees from Harvard University and completed a pediatrics residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and a neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship at Harvard's Joint Program in Neonatology (Brigham and Women's Hospital, Beth Israel Hospital, and Children's Hospital, Boston). Before joining CDC in 2000, she was Director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington. She is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Emory University School of Medicine. She is a Fellow with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and is the CDC liaison to the AAP Section on Perinatal Pediatrics (SoPPe) and Committee on Fetus and Newborn (COFN). She continues to do clinical work in neonatology, providing care to critically ill newborns in Atlanta, Georgia.  

In this episode, Shanna Cox, associate director for science in CDC's Division of Reproductive Health, and Aisha Syeda, senior program manager for AHA's strategic initiatives, discuss the reasons behind the increase in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, its health outcomes, and what hospitals can do to identify and prevent associated complications. Additionally, Cox shares strategies and resources hospitals can use to guide this work with equity in mind, including assets from the CDC's Hear Her campaign.

One of the things that can be tricky is figuring out what your intuition sounds or feels like, because it's different for all of us. Start by getting still and quiet and asking a question. Pay attention to the response. Do you hear a voice telling you the answer? Do you feel a tingle in your gut? The more you know how your intuition shows up, the easier it is to tune in and notice it. ASK: IS THIS GOING TO MOVE ME FORWARD? You can ask this question of your intuition about anything. Is writing this article now going to move me forward? Is taking a walk going to move me forward? Is another cup of coffee going to move me forward? Practice asking and listening to the answer you receive. NOTICE WHEN YOU DON'T LISTEN TO YOUR INTUITION. Don't beat yourself up about not listening to your intuition, but notice when it happens. Get curious. What kept you from listening? Notice the invitation your intuition offered. Notice how things might have been different if you had.

An estimated 700 women will die  from pregnancy-related complications in the U.S. this year, and most of those deaths are preventable. In addition, Black and Indigenous women are two to three times more likely to die of pregnancy related issues than White women. On this podcast, the focus is on maternal mortality. I talk with Dr. Wanda Barfield, the director of the Division of Reproductive Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She  discusses efforts by the CDC to reduce the number of deaths, including sharing strategies with state legislators as they try to craft solutions that work best in their states. My second guest is Khanh Nguyen, a policy expert at NCSL who tracks legislation related to maternal mortality. This week, Hear Her host Cartier Georgette talks with Sylvia about gentrification and its iterations in Atlanta, and which communities it affects the most. Some argue the changes gentrification brings are positive, such as bringing jobs, raising home equity, and making Atlanta a "hot spot" for younger generations. Critics argue it largely and disproportionately affects lower-income Black and brown communities in the city, creating a large divide between class and race.Atlanta is tied with Baltimore at 22% for the highest rates of gentrification and is the fourth-fastest gentrifying city in the U.S. Atlanta also has one of the highest pay gaps in America, with investors from California and Texas coming to the city to build projects like Echo West, Quarry Yards, Centennial Yards, and more. Meanwhile, Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has promised the city affordable housing on the campaign trail and throughout her administration. Yet, people—particularly Black families—are regularly displaced and pushed further out of the city.
