Complete Interview.   Pride Month Special Interview: Joseph Hansen (1923-2004) was a pioneer of private eye fiction, whose main character, Dave Brandstetter, an insurance investigator, was the first gay protagonist in the detective field published by a mainstream house. The first Brandstetter novel, Fadeout, was published in 1970. At the time of publication, being gay was illegal in 49 of the 50 states. Richard Wolinsky and Richard A. Lupoff had a chance to interview Joseph Hansen on June 14th, 1990 following the publication of the eleventh novel, The Boy Who Was Buried This Morning. It turned into a career retrospective. There were twelve Brandstetter novels in all, culminating in 1991's A Country of Old Men. Successful at the time, they'd fallen out of print since Hansen's death, and have now been reissued by Syndicate Books and distributed by Soho Press. Priot to  the Brandstetter books, Joseph Hansen published gay-centric novels in various small presses under a pseudonym. Two gothic novels under the pseudonym Rose Brock. There were also autobiographical novels and short story collections among his output. Despite the acclaim his books received, none of Joseph Hansen's work has ever been adapted for film or television. In this episode of the Play Therapy Podcast, I discuss the theme of "sexual curiosity" in child-centered play therapy. This is the last of the sexualized play themes. This episode focuses on the curiosity children may have regarding body parts and sexual exploration during play. Sexual curiosity is a normal and developmentally appropriate behavior for children, especially those aged five and younger. It involves children exploring and investigating the bodies of dolls or figurines, often by undressing them. Understanding this behavior is essential for therapists, as it can help distinguish between normal development and potential issues that may require further exploration. Her latest book, “Map of Hope and Sorrow,” co-written by Eyad Awwadawnon, a Syrian refugee who was planning to get a law degree in Damascus, is partly an oral history of refugees coming to Greece after escaping from their home countries. Helen Benedict teaches journalism at Columbia University,. In the interview, she discusses how she first came to meet Eyad, and then takes a look at the stories of the refugees in the book, focusing on stories that didn't quite make it into the book, and then looks at the harsh terrain of life in the camps. Helen Benedict, award-winning British-American professor of journalism at Columbia University, teams up with Syrian writer and refugee, Eyad Awwadawnan, to present the stories of five refugees who have endured long and dangerous journeys from the Middle East and Africa to Greece. Hasan, Asmahan, Evans, Mursal and Calvin each tell their story, tracing the trajectory of their lives from homes and families in Syria, Afghanistan, Nigeria and Cameroon to the brutal refugee camps, where they are trapped in a strange and hostile world. These are compelling, first-person stories of resilience, suffering and hope, told in a depth rarely seen in non-fiction, partly because one of the authors is a refugee himself, and partly because both authors spent years getting to know the interviewees and winning their trust. The women and men in this book tell their stories in their own words, retaining control and dignity, while revealing intimate and heartfelt scenes from their lives.Helen Benedict, a professor at Columbia University, is the author of seven novels, six books of nonfiction, and a play.Her newest nonfiction book is, Map of Hope and Sorrow, while her eighth and related novel, The Good Deed, will be out in 2024. Benedict's books on violence against women have won awards from Ms. magazine and elsewhere, and Benedict has published widely and spoken at Harvard University, TED Talks, West Point, the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the United Nations, among other campuses and organizations.

Oscar nominated documentary filmmaker and producer Amy Ziering has spent much of her career fighting injustice. Her film work includes the films Outrage, about the hypocrisy of closeted gay politicians; The Invisible War, about the epidemic of rape in the military; and The Hunting Ground examining the prevalence of sexual assault on university campuses. While Amy may not think of her own work as courageous, many would disagree, saying that she focuses on bringing to light important stories and giving a voice to survivors of abuse. Helen Benedict is a professor in The Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University, a writer, and a journalist, whose work has won the attention and admiration of both the Pentagon and the White House. Her latest novel Wolf Season , the second book of her trilogy about the Iraq War, will be released next month. The book is a sequel to Sand Queen . It is being published by Bellevue Press. Professor Benedict’s book, The Lonely Soldier: The Private Life of Women in the Military, paints a vivid, startling, picture of cover-ups and conflicts by military officers trying to bury or ignore serious sexual attacks of female officers. In her November 14, 2014 interview on Conversations with Allan Wolper, she acknowledged some reforms were made. For example, victims no longer have to report assaults to their immediate officers, some of whom were the actual rapists themselves. The victims can now file their charges through senior officers. Journalism professor Helen Benedict's presentation focused on the relationship between interviewing and fiction in her new book "Sand Queen," which was culled from the real life stories of female soldiers and Iraqis. Benedict spent nearly three years interviewing 40 female soldiers who had served in Iraq.
