Complete Interview. Pride Month Special Interview: Joseph Hansen (1923-2004) was a pioneer of private eye fiction, whose main character, Dave Brandstetter, an insurance investigator, was the first gay protagonist in the detective field published by a mainstream house. The first Brandstetter novel, Fadeout, was published in 1970. At the time of publication, being gay was illegal in 49 of the 50 states. Richard Wolinsky and Richard A. Lupoff had a chance to interview Joseph Hansen on June 14th, 1990 following the publication of the eleventh novel, The Boy Who Was Buried This Morning. It turned into a career retrospective. There were twelve Brandstetter novels in all, culminating in 1991's A Country of Old Men. Successful at the time, they'd fallen out of print since Hansen's death, and have now been reissued by Syndicate Books and distributed by Soho Press. Priot to the Brandstetter books, Joseph Hansen published gay-centric novels in various small presses under a pseudonym. Two gothic novels under the pseudonym Rose Brock. There were also autobiographical novels and short story collections among his output. Despite the acclaim his books received, none of Joseph Hansen's work has ever been adapted for film or television. This episode features Kate Wolf, one of the founding editors of the Los Angeles Review of Books and a critic whose work has appeared in publications including The Nation, n+1, Art in America, and Frieze. Wolf is currently an Editor at Large of the LARB and a co-host and producer of its weekly radio show and podcast, The LARB Radio Hour. In conversation with Sky Goodden, Wolf discusses Reyner Banham's Los Angeles: The Architecture of Four Ecologies (1971) and what she took from it for her own writing practice: “There are many pleasures, as there are pains, but I think the pleasure of writing is unwinding an opinion, a point of view that's latent inside of you and can become fully expressed. Especially in criticism,” Wolf adds, “the kind of closing mechanism that your brain sometimes furnishes for you where something becomes a story, both by grammar and by very minute plotting … this turn of the key in the door is immensely satisfying.” Thank you to Jacob Irish, our editor, and to Chris Andrews for assistant production. Many thanks to the National Gallery of Canada and the Sobey Art Foundation for their support.

Helen Benedict, award-winning British-American professor of journalism at Columbia University, teams up with Syrian writer and refugee, Eyad Awwadawnan, to present the stories of five refugees who have endured long and dangerous journeys from the Middle East and Africa to Greece. Hasan, Asmahan, Evans, Mursal and Calvin each tell their story, tracing the trajectory of their lives from homes and families in Syria, Afghanistan, Nigeria and Cameroon to the brutal refugee camps, where they are trapped in a strange and hostile world. These are compelling, first-person stories of resilience, suffering and hope, told in a depth rarely seen in non-fiction, partly because one of the authors is a refugee himself, and partly because both authors spent years getting to know the interviewees and winning their trust. The women and men in this book tell their stories in their own words, retaining control and dignity, while revealing intimate and heartfelt scenes from their lives.Helen Benedict, a professor at Columbia University, is the author of seven novels, six books of nonfiction, and a play. Her newest nonfiction book is, Map of Hope and Sorrow, while her eighth and related novel, The Good Deed, will be out in 2024. Benedict's previous novel, Wolf Season, was called "required reading" by Elissa Schappell and received a starred review in Library Journal, which wrote, “In a book that deserves the widest attention, Benedict ‘follows the war home,' engaging readers with an insightful story right up until the gut-wrenching conclusion.”Benedict's 2011 novel, Sand Queen, which features some of the same characters as Wolf Season, was named a “Best Contemporary War Novel” by Publishers Weekly.A recipient of PEN's Jean Stein Grant for Literary Oral History, the Ida B. Wells Award for Bravery in Journalism and the James Aronson Award for Social Justice Journalism, among other awards, Benedict is also the author of the books, The Lonely Soldier: The Private War of Women in Iraq; Virgin or Vamp: How the Press Covers Sex Crimes; and a play, The Lonely Soldier Monologues. As a nonfiction writer, Benedict's coverage of sexual assault in the U.S. military inspired the Academy Award-nominated documentary The Invisible War and instigated a landmark lawsuit against the Pentagon on behalf of victims of military sexual assault. Benedict's books on violence against women have won awards from Ms. magazine and elsewhere, and Benedict has published widely and spoken at Harvard University, TED Talks, West Point, the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the United Nations, among other campuses and organizations.
We've reached it. One of the biggest moments of the show. The season 7 finale is an episode that has gone down in infamy as one that is both largely important and yet does absolutely nothing for the trajectory of the show. The Dragon & the Wolf alludes to the final alliance between Stark & Targaryen that is announced at the pivotal meeting taking place in the eponymous dragonpit in King's Landing. All the major players have arrived to negotiate, and while things seem to be going well at first, with Cersei & Euron being rightfully spooked by the undead soldier, it all falls apart when Cersei's attempt to get Jon to remain neutral fails with Jon revealing his official allegiance to Daenerys. Tyrion attempts to negotiate with her and supposedly succeeds, only for her to later reveal to Jaime that she has no intention of assisting in the Northern war in any way, a decision Jaime advises against, causing him to eventually leave her and head north, as the snows descend on the city. In Winterfell, Sansa & Arya are finally able to put their differences aside once they realize Littlefinger is the true enemy, while Sam's arrival allows him to compare notes with Bran, as they both realize that Jon is the true heir over Daenerys, setting up what should be a nice little conflict for the final season. It all ends with one of the greatest ending shots/scenes of any finale of this entire show, with the Night King riding the undead Viseryon and burning down the Wall, allowing the Army of the Dead to finally cross over into the land of the living. As we wind down, we're reminded of all the amazing moments we've shared over the years as we head into the very controversial final season and wrap up our run of #talkinthrones only on the #talkintvpodcast --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/talkintvpodcastgmailcom/support

Novelists Nadia Hashimi and Helen Benedict join hosts V.V. Ganeshananthan and Whitney Terrell to discuss the mistakes American writers and culture made in depicting the United States' wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. In the wake of the 20th anniversary of 9/11 and President Biden's decision to pull U.S. troops out of Afghanistan, have American fiction and film truly confronted the cost of these wars, especially to civilians overseas? In this episode, Benedict discusses the persistent and problematic glamorization of conflict, and reads from her 2017 novel, Wolf Season, which is about the Iraq War and its aftermath. Then, Hashimi speaks about centering Afghan voices in her fiction and reads from her novel Sparks Like Stars, which begins in 1978 Kabul during the Saur Revolution. Helen Benedict, whose latest novel is “Wolf Season,” in conversation with Richard Wolinsky. A journalist as well as novelist, Helen Benedict focuses on the effects of war, both on civilian and military populations. Her latest novel, “Wolf Season,” takes place in a small town near Albany, New York, where Iraq war veterans and Iraqi refugees both live and work, and what happens when a natural disaster forces them to interact. How does PTSD and trauma affect those who lived or fought in a war zone, and how does that trauma scar them afterward? The post Helen Benedict: Wolf Season appeared first on KPFA.
On today's show Sharp and Golliver begin by discussing the Wizards let down against the Lakers, then jump into questions. First (5:00): How impressive have the Celtics young wings been, and what does it mean for the future? What about the rest of the rookies in a historically loaded draft class? Then (16:00) they discuss the state of Ben Simmons, Markelle Fultz, and Brandon Ingram. From there (33:00): they talk more about the Wizards and their Wolf Season, Hassan Whiteside in a smallball world, and the pros and cons of the Boogie experience. At the end (44:00): Carmelo and his hoodie, Carmelo vs. Dwight for the Hall of Fame, the Spurs and Kawhi, Klutch Sports conspiracy theories, and the next move for Giannis Inc. Helen Benedict is a professor in The Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University, a writer, and a journalist, whose work has won the attention and admiration of both the Pentagon and the White House. Her latest novel Wolf Season , the second book of her trilogy about the Iraq War, will be released next month. The book is a sequel to Sand Queen . It is being published by Bellevue Press. Professor Benedict’s book, The Lonely Soldier: The Private Life of Women in the Military, paints a vivid, startling, picture of cover-ups and conflicts by military officers trying to bury or ignore serious sexual attacks of female officers. In her November 14, 2014 interview on Conversations with Allan Wolper, she acknowledged some reforms were made. For example, victims no longer have to report assaults to their immediate officers, some of whom were the actual rapists themselves. The victims can now file their charges through senior officers. But the only way to for victims to receive justice,

Deep Geeking: Summer welcomes SciFi Ranter Girl , graphics designer and huge B5 fan Cat Hulberg, and Susie the Southern Geek How to Grow Your Geek to come onboard and Deep Geek on "The Hour of the Wolf", the Season 4 premiere episode. Here you have the women in John Sheridan's life going through various stages of denial, grief and bargaining, in an attempt to find out for sure what happened to him at Z'ha'dum, and by the end of the episode, there's still no closure in dealing with what happened, nor any new insight into knowing what did happen.
