Danny and Derek welcome journalist and author John Lechner to discuss his book, Death is Our Business: Russian Mercenaries in the New Era of Warfare. The conversation cuts through the mainstream narrative of the Wagner Group to explore the true history of Yevgeny Prigozhin, from his start as a product of post-Soviet "gangster capitalism" in 1990s St. Petersburg to his ascent as Vladimir Putin's de facto military entrepreneur. They analyze how Prigozhin leveraged the Russian state's grand ambitions with limited resources to create a self-funding war machine in Syria and across Africa, ultimately turning his own military success in Bakhmut into a fatal political challenge to the decadent Moscow bureaucracy—a challenge that ended with a suspiciously accidental plane crash.

Unfolding amid an atmosphere of profound anxiety and disillusionment, the new American war film demonstrates a breakdown of the prevailing cultural narratives that had come to characterize conflict in the previous century. In the wake of 9/11, both the nature of military conflict and the symbolic frameworks that surround it have been dramatically reshaped. The New American War Film charts society's shifting attitudes toward violent conflict and what is broadly considered to be its acceptable repercussions. Drawing attention to changes in gender dynamics and the focus on war's lasting psychological effects within films such as The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty, Eye in the Sky, American Sniper, and others, author Robert Burgoyne analyzes how cinema both reflects and reveals the makeup of the national imaginary.Robert Burgoyne taught film studies for several decades at Wayne State University and at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. He is author of seven books including The New American War Film and Film Nation: Hollywood Looks at U.S. History. On Monday, the TV journalist Daisy Goodwin accused the Tory mayoral candidate Daniel Korski of groping her breast during a meeting at No 10 in 2013. He has denied the allegation "in the strongest possible terms". She has now contacted the Cabinet Office asking to make a formal complaint. Nuala speaks to the assistant editor of The Spectator, Isabel Hardman for her take on the situation. Ensuring fairness in sport is a much debated topic, most recently following World Athletics and British Cycling joining swimming, triathlon and rugby in banning transgender women from competing in the women's category. Someone who has been campaigning on this issue is Sharron Davies, an Olympic silver medallist and swimmer who competed in many international championships for Great Britain. Nuala speaks to Sharron about her new book Unfair Play: The Battle For Women's Sport. Doctors are calling for better support and care for the thousands of women whose lives are devastated by anal incontinence after childbirth. New research by the University of Warwick's Medical School reveals more than 20% of women who give birth vaginally experience this, which can devastate their personal and professional lives. The team discovered missed opportunities in getting a diagnosis, no clear pathway to get treatment and a lack of awareness amongst not only healthcare professionals but also mothers themselves who often keep it secret. We hear from associate professor at the University of Warwick's Medical School, and GP, Dr Sarah Hillman, who led the research, and Anna Clements who experienced severe injuries during the birth of her 3rd child, and has anal incontinence. She now works for the MASIC Foundation which supports women who are injured having their babies. Rosamund Pike made her breakthrough film role as a Bond girl in Die Another Day and followed that with Pride & Prejudice, Made in Dagenham, Jack Reacher and A Private War to name just a few. She was Oscar-nominated for Gone Girl, won a Golden Globe for I Care a Lot and an Emmy for State of the Union. Recently she's won an award for Best Female Narrator for her narration of the first book in the Wheel of Time novels by Robert Jordan. She joins Nuala to discuss her current role of Connie , a woman who fakes her own death in a BBC audio adaptation of the book People Who Knew Me. Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Kirsty Starkey

Season 2 - Episode 10 For this week's Team Deakins podcast, we sit down with filmmaker Matt Heineman (CARTEL LAND, THE FIRST WAVE, A PRIVATE WAR) for a fascinating and enthralling conversation. Matt tells us how he captured footage, and survived, in two situations where his life was literally on the line. First, among the drug cartel border skirmishes in Cartel Land, and then imbedded in a New York City emergency room for months during the outbreak and initial spread of COVID-19 for The First Wave. We also talk about one of the major aspects of making documentaries that most people never think about: casting. Matt also discusses everything involved in making the leap from directing documentaries over to directing narrative films. Don't miss it!
When we get knocked down, we get back up again, rising from the smush like fruit flies! This week, the ladies are covering two war-time journalists separated by hundreds of years but have a surprising amount in common. First, Kelley tells the story of Marie Colvin, a war journalist who looked like she stepped out of a Bond film, but instead of taking out enemy spies, she sought to cover the tragedy and chaos of war- no matter the cost. Then, Emily covers Mary Katharine Goddard, a Revolutionary-era printer, book shop proprietor, journalist, and patriot who put her name on the Declaration of Independence. Is it a dragon or Washington?? Doesn't matter because we're wining about herstory! Support the show
John Heilemann talks with Marie Brenner, Vanity Fair writer-at-larger and author of the new book, The Desperate Hours: One Hospital's Fight to Save a City on the Pandemic's Front Lines. The book provides a detailed account of the struggle of New York's largest hospital system, New York Presbyterian, to combat the brutal Covid-19 surge in the initial months of the pandemic. Heilemann and Brenner discuss the divide between the corporate side of New York Presbyterian, which put a gag order on its personnel, and the medical professionals who wanted to tell the truth about the city's, the state's, and the federal government's unpreparedness in the fight against COVID; the difficulties New York Presbyterian faced because of the Trump administration's anti-science rhetoric; and the heroism of hospital employees as the pandemic raged on. John also takes Marie for a walk down memory lane and through her storied career in journalism, focusing on three stories she wrote that were adapted into critically acclaimed films (The Insider, Richard Jewell, A Private War); her experience writing about the late Marie Colvin, the legendary war correspondent; and Brenner's run-in decades ago with Donald Trump, who was so enraged by a profile she wrote about him that he took revenge on her in a public, scene-making, cowardly, incompetent -- all of which is to say, perfectly Trumpian -- fashion. my movie review of A private War from 2018 - a documentary drama starring Rosamund Pike as War correspondent Marie Colvin
Rosamund Pike has accomplished quite a bit over the years. She joined the James Bond film franchise, was nominated for an Academy Award for her work in Gone Girl, scored the Emmy for Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series for her performance in State of the Union, delivered exceptional work in Hostiles, A Private War, I Care a lot and so much more. But even with all of that, Amazon's The Wheel of Time marks a major first for Pike — it's her very first time leading a live-action series. She stars as Moiraine, a member of the Aes Sedai, a group of women with the ability to wield the “One Power.” Men are forbidden from channeling this magic because all previous attempts have had devastating results. Now, Moiraine is on the hunt for the Dragon Reborn, an extremely powerful individual prophesized to save or destroy the world. She comes to suspect that the Dragon Reborn is one of five people living in the small town of Two Rivers - Rand al'Thor (Josha Stradowski), Perrin Aybara (Marcus Rutherford), Egwene al'Vere (Madeleine Madden), Mat Cauthon (Barney Harris) or Nynaeve al'Meara (Zoë Robins). The first season covers Moiraine's attempt to lead them on a treacherous trek back to the Aes Sedai home base, the White Tower in Tar Valon. With the first three episodes of The Wheel of Time now available to watch, Pike joined us for an episode of Collider Ladies Night to celebrate the show and to revisit her journey from first getting discovered at the National Youth Theatre to headlining a blockbuster-level Amazon series. Check out was Pike had to say about Die Another Day, Gone Girl, Doom, The Wheel of Time and so much more on this edition of Collider Ladies Night! Learn more about your ad choices. From Academy Award®-nominated and Emmy-Winning filmmaker Matthew Heineman (Cartel Land, City of Ghosts, A Private War) comes an astonishingly intimate portrait of one of the biggest international music superstars of our time. THE BOY FROM MEDELLÍN follows as he prepares for the most important concert of his career--a sold out stadium show in his hometown of Medellín, Colombia. But as the performance draws ever closer, the streets explode with growing political unrest, forcing the Latin Grammy-winning musician to wrestle with his responsibility as an artist to his country and his legions of fans around the globe. As the public pressure of the approaching concert heightens, behind the scenes, Balvin also continues to deal with the anxiety and depression that has plagued him for years. Shot entirely in the dramatic week leading up to the concert, THE BOY FROM MEDELLÍN gives us unprecedented access to the “Prince of Reggaeton,” and provides an immersive look into one of the most pivotal and emotionally charged moments of his life. Director, producer, cinematographer and editor Matthew Heineman joins us for a conversation on the insanely compressed and tumultuous week of filming, gaining the confidence and comfort of Balvin's family and friends and capping the shoot by capturing a stadium-size concert, something he had never attempted before. Matthew is the founder of the New York-based production company, Our Time Projects, but that's just a small fraction of his story. Sundance Film Festival has named him "one of the most talented and exciting documentary filmmakers working today," and for good reason. Matthew is the creator and filmmaker behind documentary films Cartel Land and City of Ghosts, both of which are centered in some incredibly dangerous and unruly areas of the world. He currently directs and produces Showtime docu-series, The Trade, and directed his first narrative film in 2018 called A Private War. His work has landed him an Emmy Award, multiple Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations, and one of only two directors to ever be nominated for a Director's Guild of America Award in both documentary and narrative filmmaking. Kelsey and Matthew discuss when he decided to pursue filmmaking (2:00), the challenges he's overcome in his career (3:43), why he decided to create a narrative film after multiple successes in documentary filmmaking (5:44), adjusting to a narrative film set (7:35), his ability to gain the trust of his controversial subjects (10:55), his proudest moment (14:33) and a teaser for his next film (15:29). --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/creativefirst/message
