Jason Teasley, Chae Tate and Mark Radulich review movies currently on streaming services: The Wiz/Purple Rain/DreamGirls Movie Review! First up is The Wiz (1978). Then we move on to Purple Rain (1984). Finally we review Dreamgirls (2006).The Wiz is a 1978 American musical fantasy adventure film directed by Sidney Lumet. Adapted from the 1974 Broadway musical, the film reimagines the classic children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum with an African American cast. Dorothy, a 24-year-old teacher from Harlem, is magically transported to the urban-fantasy Land of Oz. On her travels seeking help from the mysterious Wiz, Dorothy befriends a Scarecrow, a robot called Tin Man, and a Cowardly Lion. The Wiz was theatrically released the following year on October 24, 1978, to critical and commercial failure. The film received generally negative reviews from critics, with many unfavorably comparing the film to its source material. Some critics criticized the casting of Ross as Dorothy, while others criticized the direction of Lumet, who was considered a poor choice for directing a musical. Despite its initial failure, critics have become more favorable in recent years, and it has become a cult classic among audiences, Ross's fanbase, Jackson's fanbase and Oz enthusiasts.Purple Rain is a 1984 American romantic rock musical drama film scored by and starring Prince in his acting debut. Developed to showcase his talents, it contains several concert sequences, featuring Prince and his band The Revolution. The film is directed by Albert Magnoli, who later became Prince's manager, from a screenplay by Magnoli and William Blinn. The cast also features Apollonia Kotero, Morris Day, Olga Karlatos and Clarence Williams III.It grossed $70.3 million worldwide, against its $7.2 million budget. The film won an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. Publications and critics have regarded Purple Rain as one of the greatest musical films. In 2019, the film was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".Dreamgirls is a 2006 American musical drama film written and directed by Bill Condon and jointly produced and released by DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures. Adapted from the 1981 Broadway musical of the same name, Dreamgirls is a film à clef, a work of fiction taking strong inspiration from the history of the Motown record label and its superstar act the Supremes. The story follows the history and evolution of American R&B music during the 1960s and 1970s through the eyes of a Detroit girl group known as "The Dreams" and their manipulative record executive. The film adaptation features an ensemble cast, starring Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé Knowles and Eddie Murphy with Jennifer Hudson, Danny Glover, Anika Noni Rose and Keith Robinson in supporting roles. In addition to the original compositions by composer Henry Krieger and lyricist Tom Eyen, four new songs, composed by Krieger with various lyricists, were added for the film. The film marks the acting debut of Hudson, a former American Idol contestant.Dreamgirls debuted in four special road show engagements starting on December 4, 2006, before its nationwide release on December 15, 2006. With a production budget of $80 million, Dreamgirls is one of the most expensive films to feature a predominant African-American starring cast in American film history. The film received positive reviews from critics, who particularly praised Condon's direction, the soundtrack, costume and production design, and performances of the cast, in particular Hudson and Murphy, and was also a commercial success, grossing $155.4 million worldwide.[4] At the 79th Academy Awards, the film received a leading eight nominations, winning Best Supporting Actress (for Hudson), and Best Sound Mixing. At the 64th Golden Globe Awards, it won three awards, including for the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Another film earned three Oscar nominations for original song, and this time it was the film adaptation of the Broadway smash musical Dreamgirls. Henry Krieger, the original composer of the stage show, enlisted new lyricists to work with him on the songs that impressed the Academy enough to get three into the list of five. Melissa Etheridge's history-making nomination as the first song to come from a documentary, and another nomination from Randy Newman made 2006 a very competitive year for the Original Song Oscar.

Tardaría 25 años en llevarse al cine y es mayormente la versión para el cine la que hemos utilizado en el podcast, que tiene un reparto de auténtico lujo Beyonce (Deena), Jamie Foxx (Curtis), Eddie Murphy (Jimmy), Danny Glover (Marty), Jennifer Hudson (Effie), Anika Noni Rose (Lorrell) y Keith Robinson (CC). 00h 00’00” I’m somebody 00h 01’24” Presentación 00h 04’07” Cabecera 00h 05’16” Inicio 00h 05’55” I’m lookin’ for something 00h 08’11” Going downtown 00h 09’38” Takin’ the long way home 00h 11’57” Move (You’re steppin on my heart) 00h 15’26” Fake your way to the top 00h 20’09” Cadillac car 00h 23’00” Steppin’ to the bad side 00h 29’33” Party, party 00h 33’10” I want you baby 00h 36’57” Family 00h 40’43” Dreamgirls 00h 44’32” Heavy 00h 49’49” It’s all over 00h 53’50” And I’m telling you I’m not going 00h 59’26” Opening Act II: Dreams medley 01h 06’29” Vogue sequence (duet version) 01h 10’45” When I first saw you 01h 14’17” Patience 01h 18’14” I’m changing 01h 22’35” Perfect world 01h 24’29” Ain’t no party 01h 29’52” I meant you no harm 01h 31’12” Jimmy’s rap 01h 33’26” Lorrelle loves Jimmy 01h 34’31” Family (Reprise) 01h 36’04” I miss you, old friend 01h 38’14” Effie, sing my song 01h 39’46” One night only 01h 42’58” One night only (disco) 01h 46’41” Listen 01h 51’12” Hard to say goodbye 01h 54’07” Dreamgirls 01h 56’52” Curiosidades y anécdotas 01h 59’29” Love you I do 02h 02’52” I am changing 02h 08’27” And I am telling you I’m not going 02h 13’08” Curtain call

Right away, she realizes that Andrew is just as obsessed with Broadway, and they discuss their approach to teaching the Broadway Musical. At Princeton, Stacy is a professor of theater and the director of the program in Music Theater, and she explains that one of her favorite questions to ask her students is their experience with going to Broadway. Stacy dissects all of the elements that are involved in putting together a Broadway musical. While opening up about the importance of community theater, Stacy reveals why theater is an art to be cherished in any community. Andrew even gets to talk about how important his summer theater camp, Mainstage was and how it allowed him to embrace his gay identity. And because Andrew couldn't help himself, he asks Stacy so many hard hitting musical theater questions. What does she really think of Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals? Which musical does she always have playing in the background when she's writing? What it's like to teach a Stephen Sondheim course? Fifty Key Stage Musicals: The Podcast

DREAMGIRLS COMPOSER: Henry Kreiger LYRICIST: Tom Eyen BOOK: Tom Eyen DIRECTOR: Michael Bennett CHOREOGRAPHER: Michael Bennett and Michael Peters PRINCIPLE CAST: Loretta Devine (Lorrell), Jennifer Holliday (Effie), Sheryl Lee Ralph (Deena) OPENING DATE: Dec 20, 1981 CLOSING DATE: Aug 11, 1985 PERFORMANCES: 1521 SYNOPSIS: In 1960s Detroit, three black women form an R&B group called The Dreams. As their stars rise in popularity, their relationships are torn apart as they try to balance their love for one another and their love for the spotlight.    Dreamgirls was born out of a desire to tell the story of Motown backup singers who wanted the chance to sing in the spotlight. Individually successful and well-established creative team members often butted heads through the workshop process, which allowed the show more intensive rewrites than the conventional out-of-town tryout process. At the time of its Broadway opening, Dreamgirls was the most expensive musical ever produced, but cinematic staging by Michael Bennett, a breakthrough performance by Jennifer Holliday, and an audience-pleasing score ensured ticket sales. Bill Russell argues that Henry Krieger and Tom Eyen's Motown-inspired sound of Dreamgirls appealed to baby boomer audiences in new ways and inspired a plethora of musicals scored with a pop soundtrack. Bill Russell is an internationally produced playwright, lyricist and director. He received Tony award nominations for the book and lyrics of Side Show. He co-authored the book and lyrics for Pageant and has directed that show in the Fringe and West End of London and many productions around America. He has also directed Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens (book and lyrics) around the US and in the Fringe and West End. Other book and lyric credits include Unexpected Joy, The Last Smoker in America, Brave New World and The Texas Chainsaw Musical. Special Episode #6: Kate Shindle may have come to our attention first as Miss America 1998, but she has clearly staked out a place of her own in the musical theatre world. She's appeared on Broadway in Jekyll and Hide, headlined as Sally Bowles in the Sam Mendes/Rob Marshall revival of Cabaret, and originated the role of Vivienne in Legally Blonde, the musical.Kate was always on my radar because a) she's a fellow Northwestern University alum, and b) she was a super cool Miss A., in that she was really talented and she had a great platform (AIDS awareness and education). So when I was asked to write a song for a benefit and I heard Kate was one of the singers I could write for, I snapped her up PDQ! It's great to finally work with her after years of rubbing elbows at Northwestern events and Julia Murney's annual Pancakes and Bacon Party. The benefit, called Broadway in South Africa, will take place on October 6th at Symphony Space. Ten songwriters (including Henry Krieger, Michael John LaChiusa and Bill Russell) were asked to write songs inspired by the essays and drawings of South African children. I took my inspiration from Khensoni Mabaso's sketch of Johannesburg, which features a very tall building with the word "Voda" on top. This piqued my curiousity, so off I went to research what turned out to be the Ponte City Tower, a 54-story cylindrically-shaped apartment building with a hollow core. ("Voda" is short for Vodacom, a cellular phone company that owns a huge LED wraparound sign on the top three stories of the building.)When Ponte was built in 1975, the surrounding neighborhoods were "whites only," but with the end of Apartheid, the area quickly filled with blacks and immigrants, and the white people fled to the suburbs. The building became notorious for criminal activity, suicide jumpers, and the garbage that built up inside the core. The building is currently being renovated and resold as high-style condos. Last October, before the sales office opened, the building co-sponsored an event with the city to offer people the opportunity to "Abseil off Ponte," i.e. rappel down the building on ropes like mountain climbers use.(Sorry to those who downloaded the original version of this episode with the audio issues. This new version is issue-free.)"The Core of Ponte" was recorded on 9/27/08.
