Hillside Festival. Have you heard of it? Every July, the population of Guelph decreases, and the population of the island in Guelph Lake radically increases. They're all drawn there for an annual celebration of music and community that's still going strong after 40 years, and this is despite changing musical tastes, changing economic concerns, and even a global pandemic. So what's the secret to their ongoing success? Hillside is the little festival that could and by it's fourth year it was too big for Riverside Park and moved to Guelph Lake. Soon the big names were coming to Hillside, it attracted Arcade Fire, Metric, and k-os on their way to international stardom, and it was prescient in other ways outside the musical. It was one of the first festivals to encourage the use of reusable cups and other green measures that are now just generally proforma.  Perhaps, it's Hillside's iconoclastic status that has allowed it to - if not thrive - then definitely survive in the face of numerous existential threats to the cultural sector post-pandemic. This is much to the relief of Kate Johnston who is managing her first Hillside as the executive director, picking up the baton from Marie Zimmerman who led Hillside through both the best of times and the worst of times. Johnston joins us to talk about what last minute preparations for Hillside, what's special about this year's festival and what she's looking forward to as Hillside's top organizer. We will also talk about the challenges in the arts sector right now, how they're managing with financial and volunteer support, and how Hillside continues to balance its Guelphiness with its tourist appeal. Also, how does Johnston wants to leave her mark on Hillside? So let's face the music on this week's edition of the Guelph Politicast! The Hillside Festival takes place July 19, 20 and 21 at the island on Guelph Lake, and you can get the full line-up and ticket information at their website. If you like the in-person, you can also buy tickets at the Bookshelf downtown. The season for outdoor events and festivals is near. Yet the aftermath of most events shows overflowing waste bins and loose litter, not to mention the carbon emissions released to run the event. Some festivals are only doing the bare minimum when it comes to practicing sustainability but there are several who lead the charge in implementing green initiatives to minimize their ecological and carbon footprints. For insights we welcome: Kate Johnston, executive director of Hillside Festival, and Pam Carter, president of Mariposa Folk Festival; and avid event volunteer and Masters of Environmental Studies, Gabriella Dee.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Kate Johnston, Executive Director of Hillside Festival, joins Earth Care for episode 8 of the Sustainability in the Live Music Industry Series.  Hillside Festival is an eco-friendly festival located in Guelph, Ontario that has been celebrating music and community for over 40 years. Their Mission Statement reads, the Hillside Community Festival is a not-for-profit music festival that celebrates creativity through artistic expression, community engagement and environmental leadership. Their story begins on July 14th, 1980, when they kicked off at Riverside Park Bandshell in Guelph with free admission, optional donation fee. The event was 11 hours of music for all ages. From day one, Hillside Festival has made a strong commitment to ensure the environment is top priority. Fast forward to present day, they're now a three day, multi-stage festival with a broad artistic vision that emphasizes diversity: of culture, of musical heritage and style, age, geography and influence.  They also have several green accolades under their belt. In 2014, they received the Honour Roll award from the Grand River Conservation Authority. In 2016, they won Best Green Operations awarded by Canadian Music Week. In 2019, the team received the International Clearwater Award for leadership in environmental sustainability. Additionally, for 8 years in a row, they were awarded Best Greening of a Festival from Festival and Events Ontario. They're renowned as one of Canada's most progressive, environmentally conscious, non-commercial community celebrations. In this episode, Kate discusses the sustainability initiatives implemented at Hillside Festival. The conversation covers various topics, including transportation, food waste reduction, solar power integration, the green living roof, projects for artists, and advice for festival fans. James Gordon decided last year that eight years on city council was enough and that he would step away to return to his first love, music. Of course, Gordon never really left music to take part in local politics; all the while he was on council he was still touring and still releasing new music as a city councillor, but can he now quit politics so easily? We're going to find out... Before his successful elections to Guelph City Council in 2014 and 2018, and even before his first political run as the local NDP candidate in 2011, Gordon was an accomplished singer, songwriter, producer, and instrumentalist. He was also a successful activist and community organizer; he co-founded the Hillside Festival, the Canadian Songwriters' Festival, the Guelph Civic League, the Guelph Arts Platform, and Wellington Water Watchers. Last May, Gordon announced that his formal career in politics was at an end. He wanted to make more space on council for a new generation of leadership, which meant embracing his musical career again, the Other James Gordon as it were, and this week he's having an official launch for not just one, but two different books. So is this the official relaunch of Gordon the musician. It could be, but has he really been able to leave politics behind? On this week's podcast, we'll learn if Gordon still feels compelled to keep an eye on council business, and how it feels like to be on the outside again after all those years on the inside. He will also talk about picking up where he left off with his music, being on the road again, and how he's been able to cope with the changes to the music business in the age of streaming. Plus, Gordon will talk about his new activist work abroad, and whether he's done with politics for good. So let's talk to the other James Gordon on this week's Guelph Politicast! You can find links to Gordon's music and other projects, as well as a list of upcoming tour dates on his website. Gordon will be holding his double book launch tonight at the Bookshelf Cinema starting at 7 pm, tickets are $10 at the door. The songwriting workshop is specifically designed to help aspiring female songwriters develop effective songwriting tools and strategies while gaining confidence in their own ability, and all within a supportive learning environment. As you will hear during these interviews, the music industry is currently skewed 70:30 in favour of men – not just in terms of performers, but also behind the scenes – in management, booking agents, tech crews, artistic directors, critics and presenters. Her most recent album weaves between hard-hitting songs that touch on social issues like the Black Lives Matter movement (“Rising Down,” “Paradise Fell”) and more personal narratives speaking to life and love in the digital age (“Saint Elizabeth”). Nine Pin won a Canadian Folk Music Award, a Stingray Rising Star Award and sent Kaia on an 18-month touring journey from Ireland to Iowa, including stops at The Kennedy Center, Hillside Festival and London's O2 Shepherd's Bush. Highly regarded Canadian singer-songwriter Dana Sipos was enjoying the 2018 Hillside Festival as a patron when we bumped into her, and decided we had the perfect opportunity for an interview. Dana recently released her fourth album “Trick Of the Light” on Miranda Mulholland’s boutique record label Roaring Girl Records. Dana Sipos grew up in Hamilton ON, and spent her formative years in Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories, before heading out for a life on the open road in pursuit of her art. Trick of the Light features ten songs that were developed during extensive travels across North America and Europe in support of her very well-received 2015 album “Roll Up The Night Sky”, which received a nomination for the Canadian Folk Music Awards in the Pushing the Boundaries category. In making Trick of the Light, Sipos worked with experimental Toronto producer Sandro Perri. The album also features Mary Margaret O’Hara, Jesse Zubot and Doug Tielli. Cécile Doo-Kingué is two thirds of the way through a trilogy “Anybody Listening”. “Part 1: Monologues” (2015), was a solo acoustic recording exploring the blues and roots of everyday life while “Part 2: Dialogues” (2016) featured a full band and special guests on a similar set of songs. Performance and Wellness Coach Marin Smit joins us on Cue To Cue today! I am a huge advocate of Mentors and Coaches. Almost everything that I am most proud of  I have accomplished in my life can be connected to someone who could help me see my blind spots, prioritize my goals and push me towards my vision. As creatives and performers, we are usually quite comfortable with the idea of coaching because it is often the way we hone our skill set. It astounds me to see how many creatives do not seek coaching outside of honing their creative skills. There is no clear path for most of us as we navigate our way through the creative lifestyle and having a coach can be a game changer and the key to designing a creative life that you desire.   Mairin has a love not only for coaching but for creatives. Mairin is passionate, loving and always bettering herself and is dedicated to helping performers to live a creatively fulfilled life. She knows the unique challenges and emotions that come up for performers, having been a professional actor and director herself, and is able to connect intimately and give guidance that is tailored specifically to the lifestyle and goals of creatives.   “ Coaching is an act of love. You can’t coach people unless you love them.” - Eddie Robinson     In this episode:   What the benefits are of having a coach as an artist. Billy Bragg is an iconic musician, songwriter, singer, and activist who lives in and hails from the United Kingdom. An active and outspoken artist for 40 years, Bragg has pledged his life and livelihood to making a positive change in this world and urging others, particularly younger generations, to hold authority figures and politicians to account for their decisions. He speaks of empathy and political engagement and he has been speaking of such things long before the likes of Brexit and the presidency of Donald Trump. On July 7, 2017, Bragg released a new song called “The Sleep of Reason” and he and his collaborator, Joe Henry, are appearing at the Hillside Festival in Guelph the weekend of July 14 to perform songs from their acclaimed 2016 album, Shine a Light: Field Recordings From the Great American Railroad. They’ll be playing some other songs too, I’m sure. Billy and I caught up this week to extensively discuss “The Sleep of Reason” and its lyrics, the current political landscape, travelling in trains on the American railway system with Joe Henry and cutting their record along the way, Gordon Lightfoot, his future plans, and much more. Babysitter are from Victoria, BC and hit us between the eyes with sludge punk power. Their song 'Holiday' is a perfect match for Tough Age, so it seemed fitting to mash the songs together like you were at a punk show that was going all night long Both full sessions can be found at http://pinballsessions.com Tough Age: http://pinballsessions.com/2013/11/11/tough-age/ Babysitter: http://pinballsessions.com/2013/11/14/babysitter/ Tough Age Online: * Twitter: https://twitter.com/toughage * Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Tough-Age/490775970985380 * Bandcamp: http://tough-age.bandcamp.com/ Their new album is on iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/ca/album/tough-age/id734023812 Babysitter Online: * Bandcamp: http://babysitter.bandcamp.com/ * Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/babysitterband * Tumblr: http://babysitterrevolution.tumblr.com/ Find Pinball Sessions Online: Web: http://pinballsessions.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/PinballSessions/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pinballsessions Instagram: http://instagram.com/pinballsessions/ Google+: https://plus.google.com/109652065469078482120/posts --- When we reach 1,000 Likes on Facebook we will release the entire Pokey LaFarge session, recorded this summer during Hillside Festival in Guelph. Pinball Sessions are live, off the floor, pressure free recordings by some of Canada and the World's best artists. Recorded in Guelph, ON at the Pinball Studios, full sessions are released twice a week and can be heard and downloaded for free at http://pinballsessions.com. The Pinball Sessions Podcast offers up some of our favourite tracks as well as session room banter, interviews and other goodies unavailable on the Pinball Sessions website. For a 'behind the scenes' look at the making of a session, quirky questions asked to artists, and one of a kind moments be sure to keep an eye on the Pinball Sessions Podcast. THIS EPISODE: Like a match made in heaven, today's duo toured together AND performed together on their Pinball Session. It's Michael Feuerstack and Paper Beat Scissors! Michael Feuerstack has had many names - a member of The Wooden Stars, a solo career as Snailhouse - but is now performing under his own. A multi-instrumentalist and multi-talented songwriter, Feuerstack's songs are haunting and beautiful. We feature his song 'Wolves.' Paper Beat Scissors is English Tim Crabtree who now calls the east coast of Canada his home. With an unmistakeable voice and powerful lyrics and melodies, Paper Beat Scissors straddles the fence between minimalist and complex. He performs his song 'Folds' on today's session. In between tracks, hear a cute interlude with our 'Podcast Fodder' where Michael cracks a joke that catches everyone in the studio off guard. We're pre-recorded this week, as all good-hearted local music lovers are at the Winnipeg Folk Festival! KK, Mudge, and T-Bar have had many great experiences at the Winnipeg Festival (as well as festivals in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario!), and this seemed like as good a time as any to look back at some of those magical moments that have inspired us over the years. Mudge takes a musical walk through time, listening to some Folk Fest faves and telling some stories that stand out. This is a real fun show for me, and one that I hope you'll enjoy listening to almost as much as I enjoyed making it! (Part 2 airs on Tell the Band to Go Home!)
